It’s been a year since David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of Game of Thrones, struck a mega overall deal with Netflix. Now they’ve set their first TV world-building project at the streamer and the first drama they’ll write since their HBO opus ended.
The pair are adapting Chinese author Liu Cixin’s sci-fi book trilogy The Three-Body Problem, the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization.
Benioff and Weiss have put together quite a list of creative partners for the series adaptation.
Alexander Woo, co-creator of AMC’s The Terror: Infamy, who signed an overall deal with Netflix in February, will write and exec produce alongside the GoT pair. Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi and Knives Out, will exec produce alongside his producing partner Ram Bergman. Netflix has ordered a drama series based on the award-winning Chinese book series “The Three-Body Problem” with David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo set to write and executive produce.
The series order covers all three books in the trilogy — “The Three-Body Problem,” “The Dark Forest,” and “Death’s End,” all of which were written by Liu Cixin. They tell the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization. Netflix struck a deal with The Three-Body Universe and Yoozoo Group for the rights to produce an English-language adaptation of the books.
“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” Benioff and Weiss said. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this...

Hank Williams Jr., Marty Stuart, and songwriter Dean Dillon are the 2020 class of inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The Country Music Association made the announcement on Wednesday morning.
Williams will fill the “Veterans Era Artist” slot, Stuart will be inducted as the “Modern Era Artist,” and Dillon in the “Songwriter” category, which rotates every three years with the “Non-Performer” and “Recording and/or Touring Musician” inductees.
Williams’ induction comes nearly 60 years after his father — the still influential Hank Williams — was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

“Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story,” the new season of the true-crime anthology series on USA (June 2 at 9 p.m.), stars Amanda Peet as the titular character — a San Diego housewife whose husband, Dan (Christian Slater), cruelly discards her, for which she takes murderous revenge. The story, as laid out by creator Alexandra Cunningham, unfolds over decades in two timelines: one showing Betty and Dan in a happier past, the other in their miserable present. During the coronavirus pandemic, Peet (“Togetherness”) has been sheltering in place in Los Angeles with her husband, David Benioff, the co-creator of “Game of Thrones,” and their children. “We definitely count our blessings every day,” she says.
I imagine playing Betty was difficult.

Creators who wonder what their new working worlds have in store might take comfort in Jay Duplass. However unintentional, he and his brother Mark have spent their 18-year careers preparing for this moment.
“We could be among the first people back on track and shooting,” he said. “For us to make a small movie, we could take 17 people to a special rural location. We didn’t invent this model, but we’ve gotten good at it, knowing where to spend our time, energy, and resources. Actors can do their own hair and makeup and socially distance, not stacked on top of each other. That isn’t a big incubation risk.”
From “Transparent” and “The Morning Show” to “Room 104” and “Togetherness,” the Duplass Bros. are renowned for juggling multiple film and TV projects as writers, directors, producers, or actors. When even their scrappy indies became a challenge, they pivoted to TV and streaming.

Director Chad Ferrin, from Someone's Knocking on the Door and The Ghouls fame, has released the first trailer for The Chair. The clip shows a sadistic prison warden and his many prisoners. Each undergoes a horrifying series of tortures. Starring Bill Oberst Jr., Zach Galligan and Roddy Piper, fans of horror can preview the film here. For more on the story, The Chair focuses on Richard Sullivan (Timothy Muskatell). He is sentenced to Death Row, despite being innocent. His fellow prisoners are used as victims of the warden, while he does his best to survive day to day. When the torture becomes too much, Richard turns on everyone around him. But, when his sanity begins to leave him, Richard begins to understand that there are things worse than death. The first trailer for the film shows some of the settings and characters. The film is shot mostly indoors, behind bars.
