Storyline

Haunted Prison - AKA Death Row - a horrifying live action film based on the short story by Kevin VanHook-takes place at Isla de la Roca Penitentiary. Rumor has it the Devil himself spat up the place out of the depths of hell, and man turned it into a prison for the most dangerous prisoners in the South. The monstrous building is steeped in the evil created by centuries of murder and injustice and is haunted by vengeful ghosts. Isla de la Roca was abandoned after being soaked in blood by a horrific massacre of inmates and guards. A gang of fugitives from a cop-killing robbery seek refuge within the razor wire of the prison walls at the same time as a documentary film crew arrives to tell the story of the penitentiary. When these groups cross paths within the cruel walls of Isla de la Roca, will anyone get out alive? Written by Anonymous

Pretty fun mindless haunted prison shenanigans
4 January 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I found this film to be a perfectly entertaining romp, definitely undeserving of the low rating and worst movie ever type message board threads. Now it certainly wasn't any kind of classic film, in fact if I really think about it, it was kind of a bad film, but it kept me amused throughout and thats pretty well all that matters to me. The plot has a bunch of documentary makers and some on the run jewel thieves trapped inside an evil haunted prison which has a yen for offing people in gruesome fashion. The pace is pretty sprightly and the gore scenes come with reasonable regularity. A bonus is that the prison and its ghostly denizens come up with a nice variety of modes of slaughter, and most are pretty grisly. The effects aren't great, but then the film is low budget, and its a Sci Fi Channel original to boot, which makes the pleasingly splattery grue almost remarkable. The various gnarly, mutilated ghosts wandering about the place are a nice touch too, the effects for them are quite good and they have a certain spooky presence. The film is not without its failings, the tone wavers between comedic and serious far too much, the characters aren't particularly interesting or likable on the whole, and aside from Jake Busey, I didn't find the criminals to be that convincing as criminals. As far as acting goes, there are neat cameos from Danny Trejo and Stacy Keach, while Jamie Mann provides nice eye candy. Jake Busey, I presume brother of Gary, holds the attention most throughout the film and is pretty amusing, giving it his all and coming across as suitably crazy. The film does not explain itself that well, the ending is pretty silly and there are one or two moments of lame cgi, but nothing too obnoxious. All in all this is a daft but fun outing that should entertain undemanding horror addicts but will likely not be much good for more discerning viewers. They should probably just head for the definitive prison set horror film, Prison, directed by Renny Harlin, but this one is still worth a watch for enthusiasts of this sort of film.
