When Aaron Horvath started working on “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” he and his fellow director, Michael Jelenic, knew they wanted to avoid the mistakes that had plagued so many video game-based movies in the past. They wanted to make this movie a cinematic expression of a gameplay experience. “We knew that people coming into this movie love Super Mario as a character, but they also love Super Mario as an avatar,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent chat as part of our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). The two wanted to encapsulate the visceral emotions that players experience when playing the game. “For us, it was the challenge of blending the emotional experience of playing a game with the emotional experience of watching a movie. That sort of core approach informed us all throughout.”

Warner Bros. Unscripted Television, DC and R.J. Cutler’s production hub This Machine are developing a documentary about the iconic Mad magazine.
Oscar-and Emmy-winning director Jessica Yu will direct the untitled docu about the 71-year-old humor brand.
The feature-length doc will explore the origins of the magazine, as well as its irreverent, independent, and often incisive humor. Yu will also examine how Mad became a staple of American satire for generations and encouraged readers to question authority. Mad magazine, which is owned by DC, has authorized the doc and granted the filmmaking team exclusive access to its archives.
In April Al Jaffee, the cartoonist who gave Mad magazine its iconic back page by creating the publication’s fold-in feature, died at the age of 102. In 1964, Jaffee’s fold-in was featured for the first time in Mad magazine, marking the start of the methodic flip-through that Mad readers would do for decades.

With the actor’s strike finally over, Matthew Lillard can finally talk about the plum role he has in Five Nights at Freddy’s. In a recent THR interview, Lillard mentioned being thrilled about how fans have reacted to the film, noting:
“Being 53 years old — and being around the block a couple times — I have a much deeper sense of appreciation in this moment than I probably have ever had because I didn’t expect it. I realize that these opportunities don’t come around that often. It’s been a really rich, joyful moment because I can sort of sit back and appreciate it on a deeper level.”
Lillard’s character, who has a rich mythology in the game, could well wind-up being a recurring presence in the Five Nights at Freddy’s world, especially with the film such a huge hit in theaters and on Peacock. But, it turns...

Mad is a Telugu-language campus-based comedy-drama that is reminiscent of 3 Idiots and Munnabhai Mbbs directed by Rajkumar Hirani. It is hard to ignore the resemblance between the above-mentioned films and Mad. The humor around men’s college hostels is always relatable. The first rush of love and a relationship that is felt and experienced during college days is no match to what life throws at you once you’re all out in the real-world hustle.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Was Ganesh, Aka Laddu, On The College Campus?
The two-hour-long movie begins with a young college student who ran away from a precarious situation and was caught by a dominant college group for reasons unknown. We assume there was some clash between two factions in college, which is a common sight on many campuses. The student was kept hostage by this group until the next day. Ganesh, the ‘super senior’ from college,...

Magnum and Higgins uncovered a personal question they needed to answer while conducting a missing-person investigation.
Fortunately, that didn't slow them down during a complicated case on Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 15.
Also, the couple got to experience the added wrinkles that technology could throw at them.
In what had to be a first for them, they held a virtual meeting with three clients scattered across Continental North America, three aficionados of the online game Battlecraft.
The trio reported that another of their number, Oahu-based gamer Artie, had gone missing, and they were concerned for his welfare.
Not surprisingly, Hpd wasn't willing to investigate an unresponsive gamer who hadn't picked up for only a couple of days. He hardly qualified as a missing person. Hence Thomas and Juliet's involvement.
Making things more difficult was that none of their clients knew the real name for Artie, an abbreviation of his lengthy gamer name,...

When he died this summer, a lot of director William Friedkin’s movies got new life as film fans dug into this filmography. Looking over his body of work, one of the interesting things to note is that he directed four films that could justifiably be called masterpieces, but only two of them were successful. There was The French Connection and The Exorcist, both of which raked in huge box office and are considered classics. But, there were also two flops that he made that are just as good as those films, one of which is 1977’s Sorcerer, and the other is 1985’s Secret Service thriller To Live and Die in L.A., which we’re digging into in this episode of Wtf Happened to This Movie.
The film stars William Petersen (long before CSI) as a Secret Service agent after the counterfeiter who killed his partner. While that premise sounds old hat,...

I got my nose in around about 4th grade. Before then, I had more of a little button nose. Adorable. But from the time I was 10, the pointy chin I had pretty much since I could crawl was joined by what I think of as a prominent, somewhat regal, nose in the style of what is called a “Roman” nose. (I even saw what looked an awful lot like my exact nose on an ancient statue the first time I went to Rome as a teenager!)
I was an outgoing child who had trouble not talking to other kids during class or flirting with boys. I loved making other kids laugh with jokes and impressions. I didn’t think of myself as unattractive, but I also knew that most boys who I liked didn’t like loud, quirky girls like me who had calluses on their hands from too much time on the monkey bars.

On Jan. 9, Hulu debuted its animated comedy Koala Man, the latest installment in what was then Justin Roiland’s sprawling empire. An absurdist superhero series that features a voice cast with Hugh Jackman and Succession‘s Sarah Snook, the project seemed to cap off a particularly prolific period for its producer. In a matter of months, Roiland had released a hit video game, put a collection of paintings on exhibit, aired a sixth season of his Adult Swim juggernaut Rick and Morty, and snagged a fifth season for his other Hulu series, Solar Opposites.
Three days later, that image as a high-flying animation maestro came crashing down. On Jan. 12, NBC News revealed that Roiland was facing two felony charges in Orange County stemming from an alleged 2020 domestic violence incident that occurred with a woman he was dating at the time. That August, he was arrested and released on bail. Roiland has pleaded not guilty.
