Jon Hamm is set to make a new advertising pitch, one that will see him taking on the deadpan, stumble-bumming 1980s-era comedy mantle of Chevy Chase with a reboot of Fletch.
Miramax has announced its development of a new Fletch movie, which will see star Hamm co-produce with the studio. The film will be a reboot of the franchise launched by 1985 hit detective comedy Fletch and continued with 1989’s Fletch Lives, which starred Chevy Chase as Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher, an eccentric-but-tenacious L.A. Times reporter who gets scoops the dangerous way while donning an absurd variety of disguises. Like the 1985 hit, the reboot will be a loosely-comedic adaptation of author Gregory McDonald’s 1974-launched series of Fletch detective novels.
As Miramax CEO Bill Block expresses in a statement:
“Fletch’s duration over audiences — whether told on paper or the big screen — entertains all and we could not be more thrilled...

Swoosie Kurtz has signed on to the multi-cam comedy “Call Me Kat,” formerly “Carla,” at Fox opposite Mayim Bialik.

It follows Carla (Bialik), a 39-year-old woman who struggles every day against society and her mother (Kurtz) to prove that you cannot have everything you want — and still be happy. Which is why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a Cat Café in Louisville, Ky.
Kurtz’s character is named Sheila. Sheila grew up in Louisville and subscribes to very traditional gender roles. She views her daughter Kat’s unmarried status as her own personal failure. A charming narcissist, Sheila has used her sex appeal to date an endless array of men since Kat’s father died.

1. “BoJack Horseman” Season 6, Part II (available January 31)
Why Should I Watch? Offering an incomparable blend of laughing ’til you cry and weeping from deep, emotional distress, “BoJack Horseman” is wrapping up its potent, perfect series this month. After its eponymous star (voiced by Will Arnett) went through a successful stint at rehab in the first half of Season 6, the back half will test his newfound resolve as past mistakes come back to haunt the man-horse. Whatever’s in store from creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and his excellent production team is bound to be intense, so strap in and take it slow. The very best aspect of splitting the final season in two is allowing us to savor the wide array of emotions “BoJack” so beautifully evokes.
Bonus Reason: Insiders tell me that the penultimate episode of “BoJack Horseman” is one of the season’s best, if not the best. Reviews are...

Alfonso Cuarón has triumphed at the Directors Guild of America Awards, making the “Roma” auteur the official frontrunner as we near the Academy Awards in just a few weeks. The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Bryan Cranston, who won a Tony playing Lyndon B. Johnson in “All the Way” four years ago, will return to Broadway this fall in director Ivo van Hove’s acclaimed stage adaptation of “Network.”
Cranston won an Olivier Award earlier this year playing the mad-as-hell newsman Howard Beale in the video-projection-packed London production that opened at the National Theatre last November and played through March.
“Network” will begin performances on Nov. 10 at Broadway’s Cort Theatre ahead of an official opening on Dec. 6. The limited run is expected to go for 18 weeks. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

“I’ve always been interested in things that happen more in a rural setting,” admits cinematographer Ben Kutchins. “Most of the movies that I’ve shot to this point take place in an urban setting,” so when he was offered “Ozark,” he jumped at it. “I was raised in the country, so this was an opportunity to explore the darkness of my childhood as it were.” This year Kutchins received his career-first Emmy nomination for the series. In the past decade broadcast networks mostly retreated to near the bare minimum of children’s programming that the Federal Communications Commission would allow. But in the past few months an influx of orders for kid-friendly content, specifically by streaming services, has made a seemingly cold genre suddenly hot.
In January, Hulu announced a revival of the popular “Animaniacs” for 2020 with a two-season, straight-to-series order. Amazon has been rolling out original children’s content for several years, most recently with the premiere of “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” a family series executive produced by Bryan Cranston. All the services mix original and acquired series. For Netflix that’s included such originals as “Julie’s Greenroom” and “Beat Bugs” mixed with acquisitions including “My Little Pony” and “The Cat in the Hat.”

Everything starts off so well for Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph in the new “Forever” trailer until things take a turn.
The new Amazon comedy series, previously simply known as the “Untitled Fred Armisen/Maya Rudolph comedy series,” follows the comedians as Oscar and June, a married couple who are in a bit of a rut. They’ve been living the suburban dream in Riverside, California, for 12 years, but June feels like there’s more to life and convinces Oscar to take a ski trip — and that’s when things change.
In the trailer above, we get a glimpse into how the couple met and their day-to-day routine. But things quickly go south as we see Rudolph running on a beach, Armisen grabbing a knife, and some sort of crazy bonfire. Let’s just say Rudolph’s June is tired of talking about butterflies.

Amazon has canceled “The Dangerous Book for Boys” after just one season, Variety has confirmed with sources.
The series was co-created by Bryan Cranston and Greg Mottola and is based on the book by Conn and Hal Iggulden. The book itself has no plot per se, but instead offers boys advice on a wide variety of topics like fishing, juggling, histories of famous battles, and marbles, among many others. The book became a bestseller in the U.K. in 2006 and has since been adapted for the U.S. and other markets.
The series follows a boy named Wyatt and his brothers as they deal with the death of their father. He leaves his sons a copy of “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” which inspires a fantasy world in which Wyatt reconnects with his father while learning important life lessons.
Cranston first put the book into development as a series in 2014, which Variety exclusively reported.

Exclusive: Amazon has opted not to order a second season of Bryan Cranston’s family comedy-drama The Dangerous Book For Boys. The decision comes four months after the series’ first season was released.
The cancellation should not come as a surprise. When Deadline asked new Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke about The Dangerous Book For Boys‘ renewal chances in June, she said, “It’s looking very tough for the cost of the show. It’s really difficult, coming from the genre where it exists and the kind of audience it’s drawing. The math doesn’t quite work.”
Created by Cranston and Greg Mottola based on the book by Conn and Hal Iggulden, the series follows the McKenna family as they cope with the untimely passing of Patrick (Chris Diamantopoulos), their patriarch and a whimsical inventor. Conn and Hal Iggulden’s bestselling guide to boyhood seems like an odd candidate for a television adaptation. It is, after all, a non-fiction how-to with no narrative to speak of. And yet, for Bryan Cranston and his Moon Shot Entertainment production company, the philosophy at the heart of the book—that kids should look up from the cell phones and experience the world first-hand—was undeniable. The touching family comedy from Amazon Studios follows Wyatt (Gabriel Bateman) and his brothers as they attempt to process the loss of their father.
Where did your interest in The Dangerous Book for Boys begin?
I think there’s enough cynicism in this world, and I wanted to create a show that—without sounding syrupy—[would] be wholesome. I wanted to bring some hope to the world. Where you see a family struggling, and, yet, their nucleus is strong, and they try to work out their problems.

The cast and creators of Amazon’s forthcoming series The Dangerous Book for Boys took the stage to kick of Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys today. Show co-creators Bryan Cranston and Greg Mottola were joined on stage by stars Erinn Hayes, Gabriel Bateman, and Swoosie Kurtz to talk about what to expect from the series based on the book by Conn and Hal Iggulden.

When Cranston was first offered the title, it was being developed as a drama, but it wasn’t clicking for him in that particular genre. He allowed himself to “let go” and said, “like a lightning bolt, it struck me.”

Thursday night at New York’s Paley Center for Media, Emmy and Tony-winning actor Bryan Cranston talked about his storied career and the making of new Amazon show “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” which he adapted for the streaming service alongside “Superbad” director Greg Mottola.
The series is based on a popular children’s book that gives advice on matters such as “The Five Knots Every Boy Should Know” and “Building a Treehouse.” Before the event, Cranston told Variety that he received the book as a gift from his “Breaking Bad” co-star Anna Gunn, and enjoyed it, but didn’t think he could adapt it when Sony expressed interest “because there are no characters and there’s no plot in the book.” “I couldn’t figure out how to crack the story, so I just forgot about it,” Cranston said.

In a world where kids are more often than not glued to their screens, Sony Pictures TV’s “The Dangerous Book for Boys” aims to inspire a world of imagination and adventure.
In adapting the book by Conn Iggulden and Hal Iggulden, executive producer Bryan Cranston faced a unique challenge — given that the book doesn’t have any characters or plot. “It’s just a how to: how to build a fort, how to play baseball, how to talk to a girl, all of these things,” he tells Variety. “So everything had to start from scratch.”
Cranston credits the sensibility of the book with helping him shape the narrative. “It was the reason that the book was created that got me thinking and helped me to crack this story,” he says. “I wanted to follow along with that sensibility about the embracing of boyhood and allowing boys to be boys.

Here’s how Bryan Cranston explains his current production slate: “I have eclectic taste as an adult.” And given the variety of genres his four current projects explore, that checks out.
“That’s what I love about it, because I don’t like to trample upon the same stories,” he said, noting that while Amazon’s “Sneaky Pete” is an edgy con-man story and “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” delves deeply into the realm of sci-fi, his latest series, “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” is “a family adventure, fun, and beautiful.” (Cranston is also an executive producer on the Sony Crackle animated series “Supermansion.”)
Next up for Cranston, “The Dangerous Book for Boys,” which stars Erinn Hayes as the widowed mother of three boys in need of some advice.

When one door closes another one opens. Well, that's what Erinn Hayes can say at least. The 41-year-old actress — who was recently fired from Kevin Can Wait after just one season — is already on a new Amazon show called The Dangerous Book for Boys, which will premiere on Friday, March 30, Deadline reported. Leah Remini — who seemingly took Erinn's spot on the sitcom —previously shared the news on Twitter following the Season 2 premiere of Kevin Can Wait in late September after a fan called her "classless" for stealing Erinn's job. They wrote, "I am all about your Scientology crusade. Classless that you hurt another actress when you don't need the money. Sh---y girl-code," to which Leah replied, "1. I didn"t make that decision 2. It's a sitcom [and] it isn't that deep 3. She is on another show 4. Real things are going on in the world." The Dangerous Book for Boys is based on...
