We chat to director Ron Howard about his latest film, Inferno, conspiracy theories, and the place for cinema in the 21st century...
Renowned symbologist Robert Langdon’s back for another mystery to crack, but Inferno sees in less than great shape. At the start of the movie - once again adapted from a hit Dan Brown novel - Langdon wakes up in a Florentine hospital with a head injury and no idea of the past few days’ events. Worse still, there’s a man-made super-virus hidden somewhere, and only by solving a series of clues left in classic works of art can Langdon track it down before the pestilence wipes out half the planet.
Director Ron Howard, who’s now on his third Langdon movie, attacks Langdon’s apocalyptic visions with evident relish. The location of the virus is somehow linked to Dante’s epic poem, the Inferno,...

October is one of our favourite months of the year, because we can start wearing sweaters, leaves are falling, and we can justify horror movie marathons all month long.
In theatres, however, we are getting a very interesting mix of thrills, scares, laughs, and some indie gems that caught our eye when they played the Toronto International Film Festival last month. That’s right, awards season is on the verge of beginning, and October features a couple of those highly buzzed titles. Among these are Moonlight and The Birth of a Nation, as well as some good old fun at the movies, like Tom Cruise returning as Jack Reacher, or Tom Hanks’ reprisal of Robert Langdon in Inferno.

Today brings about our first real look at Inferno, the next Dan Brown book adaptation that has Tom Hanks reprise the Robert Langdon role from The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons. Come inside to watch the teaser trailer!
Personally, I never cared for The Da Vinci Code movie adaptation, though I know many enjoyed it. Angels & Demons, however, was pretty damn impressive and resparked my interest in the Robert Langdon adventures in general. Even so, my interest in Dan Brown's books have waned, and his last few didn't make much of an impression. So I'm not entirely sure how to feel about the Inferno movie at this point:
It's not really a bad trailer, but certainly makes it look more action-packed than the story really is. What's more intriguing to me, however, is so much of this trailer seems to use footage from the last act of the story,...

Sony Pictures has released the two posters for the hotly-anticipated sequel Inferno, the fourth novel in Brown's popular series. The Da Vinci Code hit the big screen in 2006, followed by 2009's Angel's & Demons. The Lost Symbol is the third book in the series, but it's being skipped for some reason.
Tom Hanks will reprise his role as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon. The film also co-stars Felicity Jones, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Ben Foster, and Sidse Babett Knudsen. Inferno is directed by Ron Howard from a script written by David Koepp,
In the heart of Italy, Harvard professor of symbology, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), is drawn into a harrowing world centered on one of history's most enduring and mysterious literary masterpieces... Dante's Inferno.
Against this backdrop, Langdon battles a chilling adversary and grapples with an ingenious riddle that pulls him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science.

★★★★☆ British director Ken Russell passed away in 2011 leaving behind a life's work devoted to filmmaking at its most exuberant and vital. Russell made a number of films in the early part of his career which depicted artists brimming with the same enthusiasm of expression as the director himself. The Great Passions is one of two collections which the BFI are releasing to honour his distinctive approach to the biographical form. The three films collected here are dedicated to Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Dante's Inferno), Isadora Duncan (Isadora) and Henri Rousseau (Always On Sunday) - three artists whose eccentricity provide a perfect foil to Russell's own bravura style.

A film of EA's Dante's Inferno game, based on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, is on the way...
A few years ago, Electronic Arts made a videogame called Dante's Inferno. This, in turn, was based in part on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, following Dante on his quest through the nine circles of Hell to try and save the soul of his beloved.
So, in short, a game based on a classic text.
Now though, we're getting a film based on a game based on a classic text, as Universal Pictures is bringing Dante's Inferno to cinema screens. It's recruited Fede Alvarez, who helmed this year's remake of The Evil Dead, to make the movie.
Inevitably, there's a question as to why Universal didn't save itself a few quid and go straight to the source text for an adaptation. Our best guess is that...

Despite the rather terrible history of big screen video game adaptations, yet another one is moving into active development, and, what's more, it has found a director. According to Deadline, Universal Pictures is now planning to move forward with a movie version of the 2010 Playstation 3/Xbox 360 game Dante's Inferno and have hired Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez to helm the project. Based on the first third of Dante Alighieri.s classic epic poem, the video game changes the titular lead character into an Italian mercenary who returns home after years away fighting in the Third Crusade. Unfortunately, he is met with two crushing pieces of news: first, he learns that all of the mortal sins he committed during his time in battle wouldn't be forgiven, and that his one love, Beatrice, has been murdered and pulled down to hell. Unwilling to let her go, he decides to follow her into...

Deadline has word that Alvarez has been set by Universal Pictures to adapt Dante's Inferno, the Electronic Arts video game from 2010, which is set in the classic Italian poem from Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. The game, which was picked up by Universal years ago, follows an Italian mercenary who returns from the Third Crusade and descends into hell in order to retrieve the soul of his murdered lover Beatrice. Read on! Here's a more detailed synopsis of the game: The Italian mercenary Dante returns home from the bloodletting that was the Third Crusade to two pieces of soul-crushing news. Deadline report that Fede Alvarez will direct a live action take on the Electronic Arts action adventure video game Dante's Inferno for Universal. The game is based on "Inferno", the first canticle of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, (why Universal don't simply adapt that and are going straight for the video game is anyone's guess..but there ya go) and follows the exploits of Dante (reimagined as a Templar knight) as he journeys through the nine circles of Hell to reclaim the soul of his beloved Beatrice from the hands of Lucifer. Jay Basu (Monsters: Dark Continent)is on script duties, with Bruce McKenna (The Pacific) writing an earlier draft.

The hit sound film The Jazz Singer (1927), starring Al Jolson and directed by Alan Crosland, fueled the mainstream appetite for newfangled "talkies"... and brought on the death throes of the ol' fashioned silent film. Over the next few years, silent motion picture production around the world slowed, withered, and died. Before this era came to a close, however, the horror genre took root, clawed its way into mainstream popularity, and spawned a wealth of atmospheric and unsettling thrillers. These films built the foundation upon which a century of horror movies would be constructed. The art of film was still in its infancy, and this silent era of experimentation gave rise to some of the most striking and fascinating horror movies ever made. While Germany would soon rise to dominate horror of the silent era, Italy helped get the ball rolling with their first feature length film, Dante's Inferno (1911), directed by Giuseppe de Liguoro.

Sometimes, the movies slated for the 2012 year are only as good as their hype. A few of these flicks only look good as a trailer, but when audiences hit the theatre, either all the best parts have been given away or expectations fall flat. Not every title bears merit, but if any blood money is to be spilt, here’s a list of curios that should really be investigated.
Beneath the Darkness (Release Date: Jan 6)
Dir.: Martin Guigui.
Cast: Dennis Quaid, Tony Oller and Aimee Teegarden.
When a group of teens witness their best friend murdered by a so-called hero, they have to figure out how to expose him and avoid being killed too. Dennis Quaid plays Ely Vaughn, the pillar of the community, but also the antagonist in this film. Interestingly enough, Vaughn is the town’s local mortician, and there’s a secret that no body knows about him.

With viscious anger and brutal vengeance, Dante will stop at nothing to rescue his beloved Beatrice. Equipped with Death’s Scythe and the Holy Cross, Dante must save his Beatrice from the devil and, in so doing, come to face his own demons to redeem himself.

As the video games industry rapidly comes of age like an ungainly teenager emerging wide-eyed into adulthood, it's heartening to see more developers drawing on a richer cultural palette than just guns and scantily clad maidens. Enter Dante's Inferno, the new IP from EA studio Visceral Games, which takes its inspiration from classic 14th century poem The Divine Comedy. Written by Italian Dante Alighieri between 1308 and 1321, the poem had a profound effect on Christian beliefs around the afterlife, particularly the meaning and imagery of eternal damnation. So Digital Spy swallowed its sins and jumped through the gates of hell to see how Visceral is transforming such a revered literary masterpiece into a punchy game experience. Dante's Inferno is loosely based on Inferno, part one of The Divine Comedy, which depicts Dante's journey through (more)...

Dramatically over the top yet visually cool, here's the trailer for the upcoming animated feature Dante's Inferno from Starz. Like last year's Dead Space: Downfall , this film serves as a companion piece to Electronic Arts' upcoming video game, itself inspired by Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy." Packed with carnage and brimming with bloodshed, Dante's Inferno follows one man's descent into hell. Apparently, Starz has enlisted a series of directors (behind other animated films like Ghost in the Shell and Blood: The Last Vampire ) to helm different segments as the film's protagonist ventures from one circle of hell to the next. Once again, there are only a handful of releases worthy of Qe endorsement this week, but the one's we do want, we really want. Like Sean Meredith's Dante's Inferno for instance, where "apocalyptic graphic novel artwork and eerie Victorian toy theater converge" to give birth to biting satire. Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro's long overdue Delicatessen: Special Edition is also out today as well. And how could we forget Anchor Bay's Phantasm IV: Oblivion disc? And what's this? A swanky new director's cut of Christophe Gans's The Brotherhood of the Wolf?! I haven't seen Botw in years, but after catching Silent Hill on Showcase a couple nights back (what a great flick) I'm interested in revisiting it for the lush visuals alone. You know the drill.
