Sound mixer Kevin O’Connell, who has worked on films such as Top Gun and Transformers, had a rather bittersweet distinction in Hollywood — he held the record for the most Academy Award nominations without a single win.
That streak finally came to an end at the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday. After 21 nominations spanning 33 years — his first coming in 1984 for the classic tearjerker Terms of Endearment — O’Connell finally heard his name called for Mel Gibson‘s directorial comeback Hacksaw Ridge.

A dead rat, a dead aide, and an uncooperative congresswoman all took part in NCIS Season 14 Episode 9, "Pay to Play." With pretty much the entire main cast fawning all over Congresswoman Flemming, I couldn't help but feel that they were just trying way, way too hard to set up a relationship between her and Vance.
The fact that this episode was clearly aired out of order did nothing to help, either.
The out-of-order airing was made pretty apparent when Clayton Reeves showed up at the beginning of the episode, having just arrived from England to join the NCIS International Desk. Something he had already done in NCIS Season 14 Episode 8, "Enemy Combatant."
In fact, in my review of that episode I even questioned if I'd missed Reeves joining NCIS! Turns out, I had! It just hadn't aired yet. While not a huge problem, it was noticeable and, indeed, distracting.

Sean Kingston has no problem picking out tons of high-end jewelry, but paying for it is another story ... according to the high-end jeweler who says they got screwed. NYC jeweler Aqua Master just sued Kingston over 9 pieces of jewelry he scooped up last month -- valued at more than $300,000. The jeweler says Sean promised his biz manager would wire money to pay his tab. According to the suit, Aqua got 2 checks instead of a wire transfer ... and they bounced.

It had been a long time since I was in the same room with director Michael Cimino. My first job out of Nyu Cinema Studies was in the publicity department at United Artists in New York, where I witnessed the long delays on Cimino’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning 1978 anti-war diatribe “The Deer Hunter,” the period western “Heaven’s Gate.”
The director got caught up in chasing authenticity in the myriad details of the production, training for weeks the cast led by Kris Kristofferson and Isabelle Huppert to roller-skate for one scene — and demanding endless retakes until he shot more feet of film, over 1 million, than even Francis Coppola did on another memorably out-of-control UA movie, “Apocalypse Now.” The original $11 million budget bloated to $32 million (Cimino’s figure), as recounted in Steven Bach’s “Final Cut: Art, Money and Ego in the Making of ‘Heaven’s Gate.’

Have you noticed something odd on Game of Thrones this season? The merciless killing of the direwolves out of nowhere. Daenerys bursting back onto the scene, yet Drogon remaining safely off-camera. Several high profile fights and deaths fading to black (in Arya’s case, literally) before things could really get going. It was almost as if HBO had slashed the budget for their flagship show, and were hoping no one would notice. Or that they’d funneled the Gdp of a small country into Episode 9, the “Battle of the Bastards.” Episode 9 of Game of Thrones is always a big budget affair. From “Baelor” and “Blackwater” to “The Rains of Castamere” and “The Watchers on the Wall,” the show doesn’t play around when it comes to climaxes. Combine that pressure with director Miguel Sapochnik (who also did last season’s amazing “Hardhome” episode), and you have a recipe for the largest medieval television battle of all time. But just how large? According to Entertainment Weekly, ludicrous speed large. Some highlights: • 600 crew members. That’s 600 people that had to be bused in to Northern Island, fed, paid, and generally kept happy enough to not run their mouths with spoilers. • 500 extras. All those bodies in the preview clips and photos? Many of those are real people, not digital creations added after to create the illusion of bulk. Which means 500 people that had to be costumed, choreographed, and paid. HBO even had the “teams” train separately to foster an air of competition. Combine these folks with the crew and so far the “Battle of the Bastards” production is the size of a small town. • 25 stunt people. Extras and actors can’t be (legally) expected to do some of the trickier shots in battle. Which means Game of Thrones had to bring in professionals to make those stunts look as real as possible. • 70 horses. Yep. Seventy. Horses are notorious for being difficult to work with and coordinate for battle scenes. Not to mention super expensive. Even well-trained animals can get nervous running at a line of people screaming and wielding weapon props. According to EW, adding in horses can more than double the amount of time it takes to shoot a scene. Time is money, and horses are money pits. All together, over 1,000 people spread across four camera crews took almost a full month to film this episode. When you split the budget for Season 6 of Game of Thrones evenly across all 10 episodes, the average comes out to $10 million per episode. But clearly all episodes aren’t created equal and a nice chunk of that went into making the “Battle of the Bastards” a spectacular piece of television. But it’s also probably why we can’t have more direwolves and dragons. You win some, you lose some.

Los Angeles - On Thursday, Jill Soloway had some strong and hilarious advice for the outgoing and incoming students of the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women. "Rub your shame all over your script." "Tear those motherf*ckers down, like vile lady-dogs." "If you can't cry, you're a liability." "Shoot from your pussy." The Emmy-nominated, Golden Globe-winning film/TV director aimed her keynote address to the 20 or so Dww directors showcasing their short films at the Directors Guild of America HQ. There's been a recent spike of voices advocating for more women directors and women's stories in Hollywood especially on the heels of this past Oscars season; the late April release of a damning USC/Sundance study on the employ of female directors; and the Aclu's targeting of gender discrimination announced this week. Certainly, Soloway noticed. "It's an amazing time for women," the "Transparent" creator/producer/director said in her opening remarks,...

Time is money, especially a lawyer's time. Though she was eventually deemed incapable of hiring her own legal counsel, the attorney whom Amanda Bynes hired to represent her last year has filed court documents to obtain $16,000 in fees. Artemio Santiago states in a filing obtained today by E! News that Bynes retained his services on Oct. 14, 2014, to represent her at a competency hearing, several days after she was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold. Santiago says that he convinced the troubled star to start taking her prescribed medication, which she had previously refused to do. He states in the filing that he visited her multiple times while she was hospitalized to make sure she was keeping...

I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! stars Kendra Wilkinson and Jake Quickenden got dirty during the latest Dingo Dollar challenge... as Kendra joked that she was risking a "yeast infection".
The pair took part in the Time Is Money challenge, which saw them facing a selection of clocks and a smelly swamp.
They needed to work out the time on each of the clocks to win their Dingo Dollars, but the clues they needed were hidden at the bottom of the swamp.
It was difficult from the very start, as Jake admitted: "I'm not the best at telling the time. I usually use a digital watch."
And the stink of the swamp didn't help either, as Kendra sighed: "Hands down the worst smell I've ever smelled in my entire life is right there... I'll get a yeast infection."
The duo actually ended up sticking grass up their noses...

Venice — The title treatment for Ramin Bahrani's Venice Competition entry consists of blood red letters on black. Filling the entire screen with blocky all-caps letters and numbers dozens of feet high, we read: 99 Homes. It looks more like the title treatment for a horror than a drama digging into a moral morass of foreclosure, subsistence level employment, and better paid but more spiritually costly work. As it turns out, it is also a horror movie of sorts. The first shot of the film itself is even a post-mortem scene, as Michael Shannon's predatory realtor Rick Carver -- and how's that for a horror movie name? -- gazes almost impassively at blood dribbling down tacky pink bathroom tiles. The contrast couldn't be more stark: Shannon in an off-white blazer so sharp it hurts (costume design by Meghan Kasperlik is on point throughout), gold watch glinting and not a hair...

Time is money when it comes to film and TV production, so this delay as the Big Apple recovers from Hurricane Sandy could create problems for some producers — or, more likely, the companies that insure them. The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater and Broadcasting says that, for now, it will only authorize “parking at qualified stages.” The good news is that most of the production work in New York is done indoors. Also, producers should be covered by “Imminent Peril” insurance, which compensates for losses when civil authorities revoke permits to protect life or property.

Stephen Colbert couldn't believe his eyes when he read the now-infamous New York Times op-ed "Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs," in which ex-employee Greg Smith offered a blistering takedown of the investment firm. Where Colbert comes from, you simply don't say such things about your boss, no matter how "toxic and destructive" you might find it.
Saying he was "disgusted" by the op-ed that has caused waves in financial sectors, he defended Goldman Sachs against the claim that they don't spend any time thinking about clients' needs, focusing only on their own profits. "Time is money! And they don't want to waste their clients' money by spending time thinking about them."
But Colbert was most outraged by Smith's attack on the often-attacked Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein, who Smith blames for the current atmosphere of the company. Colbert especially noted Blankfein's claim that the bank is "doing God's work," which Colbert saw no problem with.

In Time
Directed by: Andrew Niccol
Cast: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Alex Pettyfer
Running Time: 1 hr 49 mins
Rating: PG-13
Due Out: January 31, 2012
Plot: In a world where time is currency and every second counts, a young man (Timberlake) from the ghetto seeks to shake up the economic system by kidnapping a rich man’s daughter (Seyfried).
Who’S It For? It doesn’t matter if you like looking at Timberlake or Seyfried, or if you think action movies can be fun in general. If you don’t buy this unusual concept, this sci-fi flick won’t be worth your … time.
Movie:

Time is money, literally, in the high-concept thriller In Time. In a not-too-distant future that looks like an emptier Los Angeles, people wear a day-glo green clock on their forearm which starts a countdown once they reach a quarter-century. They stay looking 25, but from that point they have to beg, borrow or steal time to stay alive; from the number of people who drop dead where they stand this is clearly a tough ask. It's what one character calls "Darwinian capitalism", and the inequity of the disparate time zones – you're either time-poor in the ghetto or the tiny minority of time-rich in a protected metropolis called New Greenwich – offers a pretty straightforward comment on Planet Earth 2011.

We’re a fragile planet, and the imagined end of days has long kept storytellers busy with brainy apes, sentient computers, Emma Thompson’s cancer cure with vampiric side effects and Government sponsored culling of the populace just a few of the ways our planet will go to hell in a handbasket.
While Bill & Ted will eventually save us all with their most excellent music (and the underlying philosophical decree that we should ‘Be Excellent to Each Other’) there’s a long road ahead with many disasters, diseases and dystopian frontiers to cross. Here are a few of the recent examples of our world gone horribly wrong. Enjoy!

Here we have a Bonnie & Clyde meets Robin Hood tale that manages to sprinkle in a little of Sly Stallone's Over the Top on its downward spiral to sci-fi nothingness. It was evident from the start that writer/director Andrew Niccol's In Time was going to be a rough outing as Justin Timberlake did his best Will Smith impersonation and we were supposed to immediately buy in to the film's premise, even though it never attempts to convince us of its legitimacy, as plot holes get wider and wider in nearly every scene. However, I was still giving the film a chance over 60 minutes in, convincing myself it wasn't that bad until it all became too unbearable as the repeated ticking clock scenarios caused more harm than good.
The story goes like this, in the late 21st century people are no longer using money for currency, they are using time.

To celebrate the release of In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, in cinemas 1 November, we are giving 5 lucky readers a chance to win an In Time goodie bag!
Welcome to a world where time has become the ultimate currency. You stop aging at 25, but there’s a catch: you’re genetically-engineered to live only one more year, unless you can buy your way out of it. The rich “earn” decades at a time (remaining at age 25), becoming essentially immortal, while the rest beg, borrow or steal enough hours to make it through the day. When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage. Living minute to minute, the duo’s love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system.

It was during the making of Gattaca that writer-director Andrew Niccol first got the idea of In Time. In the highly regarded thriller, the question of identity lies at the forefront of the storyline. Niccol had a thought at the time about what would happen if we could alter the age gene and people would stop aging at twenty-five. That inspiration which proved too much exposition for Gattaca has produced Niccol’s next film, In Time, which stars Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried as two people at either end of the time-as-money spectrum.
Niccol sat down with Movie Fanatic for an exclusive interview about the finer points of In Time and also his thoughts on getting the gig as the writer-director who will bring Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s expansive and mind-blowing The Host to screens.
Movie Fanatic: In Time is such a mind-blowing idea. What was the genesis of the movie for you?...

Upcoming sci-fi drama In Time is set in a world where time - and thus human life and longevity - have become a commodity that can be purchased.
To promote the 20th Century Fox release, an online competition has today been launched in which you can get a taste of that concept and the chance to 'win a year of your life.'
UK residents could win an amount equivalent to their annual salary (to the value of £26,000) as a cash prize.
The Facebook game Time Is Money challenges users to stay alive for a week by topping up their online life clock. Users must collect codes from various online and offline media partners, as well as a variety of In Time marketing materials, and input these into the game to increase their time.
To play the game, you need to visit and 'like' the official UK Facebook page for In Time,...

Hollywood shouldn't mess with Harlan Ellison. The legendary writer and curmudgeon has moved to block New Regency's upcoming sci-fi thriller "In Time," claiming that it rips off his short story "Repent, Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman." The thing is, he appears to be right. While there are other sci-fi stories that float around the same concept -- Lee Falk's "Time is Money," David and Janet Peoples' "Timebomb," and Stephen Tolkin's "The Price of Life" -- and all were undoubtedly lifted from, the strong similarities between "In Time" and "Repent, Harlequin" really can't be denied. The entire character and plotline of the Master Timekeeper appears to have been directly lifted from "Repent." At least one reviewer, Richard Roeper, even cited the short story as the movie's source. Furthermore, Ellison hired a screenwriter to adapt the short story and was preparing to approach studios with it. It's not known from...

When I first heard that Olivia Wilde would play Justin Timberlake's mom in Andrew Niccol's upcoming sci-fi thriller In Time, my initial reaction was, "Huh? What a stupid idea." But I recently saw the film's trailer, and I have to admit I was drawn in.
In Time presents a future where the human aging gene has been shut off and we can live forever. People stop aging at 25 — but in a world where one doesn't grow older, time has literally become money. Stamped on everyone's arm is a clock that keeps track of the time they have left. If you're rich, you live forever. If you're poor, you work to earn the right to live.
Justin Timberlake plays a working class guy just scraping by (which takes on a whole new meaning in this flick) and whose mom is approaching her sell-by date. One day, he comes across...

How do you top a huge San Diego Comic-Con movie panel with Charlize Theron and Damon Lindelof? Well, in this case, you send in Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. After Prometheus star Theron and screenwriter Lindelof had shed a bit of light on what the heck Ridley Scott's Prometheus is about ("It also sounds really pretentious," acknowledged Lindelof), Timberlake and Seyfried showed up to 20th Century Fox's Comic-Con panel to talk about the future... Particularly the freaky one that sets the scene for their new sci-fi flick. "Time is money," Timberlake described In Time (formerly known as Now and a couple of other things), about a society in which everyone stops...

Sean Kingston has returned to work following his serious jet ski accident earlier this year. The 21-year-old singer and actor was severely injured when he collided with a bridge on his jet ski at the end of May. Kingston was spotted wearing a brace on his injured left wrist as he filmed a music video for 'Replay' musician Iyaz, NBC Miami reports. The 'Take You There' star later added on Twitter: "Great day spent with my Time is Money Team!... @iyazlive @tlanez and @jbarsodmg... (more)...

In our recent interview with Gene Simmons, we got to ask him about his upcoming role on ABC's Castle. When asked how this role came about he responded, "I’m a lucky guy, you know? They picked up the phone and they called. It’s as simple as that, it’s easier to get to me than most knuckleheads who do this for a living because outside of the Kiss thing I don’t use mangers or agents. Yeah, you want me? You say. I’m going to go 'yes’ or 'no.’"
Why did he choose to go on Castle as opposed to another show? He's actually a fan, he goes on to say, "I’ve actually been a fan of Castle, I think it’s very clever, one of the better written shows on television, the only one of its kind on television...They had me in as myself,...

Well, this is awkward. Ranylt and I forgot to call each other and coordinate our outfits so now we're left wearing the same black dress with a flouncy white bow much like Kelly and Brenda on that episode of "90210." That is to say, it's unofficial Crime and Punishment Day here at Pajiba! Warden threw a party in the county jail! Let's rock.
In light of your stunning, vociferous, some (jM) might even say, "explosive" response to the list I posted yesterday, I thought I would challenge your clever minds a bit with a list of very narrow proportions. Movies about prisoners based on books! Ha! Suck on it, you fecalphiles. Once I started thinking about it, however, I realized the prison movie is one I'm awfully fond of. Most of the films on this list will stop my thumb mid-click whenever they are on. I've even been known to sit through them twice (thank you,...

Looking both futuristic and dapper on the streets of Los Angeles Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried were photographed on the set of Andrew Niccol’s latest sci-fi genetic thriller, previously titled I’m.Mortal, now called Now.
Turning off the aging gene allows for an actualisation of the old adage Time is Money and thus rich, forever young citizens of the future are in danger of having their time stolen or something. The project has attracted some interesting casting thus far and while I can’t help but get a Surrogates/A.I. vibe from this one, I’m sure Niccol will have something substantial to offer.
We’ve seen some pics from the shoot already, and here Justin Timberlake is taking Amanda Seyfried hostage before going on the run – here’s a few more pics to brighten your day.

“Nigerians prefer their own films to the Hollywood imports” we’re told. This explains the amazingly rapid growth of the fledgling Nigerian film industry, which is essentially a grass roots business funded by the people involved. Director Jamie Meltzer gives us a fascinating look at the inner workings of this underdog industry, which is referred to as ‘Guerilla filmmaking’.
Based in Lagos Nigeria, the “Nollywood” movie business didn’t even exist in 1990, yet it has quickly grown into the 3rd largest film industry in the world. In the first 10 years of its existence, movies made in Nigeria netted the equivalent of 400 million Us dollars. The projects are financed by the filmmakers themselves or by donations. No big studio backing or government funding. The creators take all the risks themselves.
The way the industry works there is in amazing contrast to Hollywood. Nollywood films are not released to cinemas. (Nigerian theaters show only imported films.

It's exciting to be part of the SCORECast community, not only as a contributor but also as a reader/participant. The articles this month have been particularly vibrant and thought-provoking. One subject that deserves additional mention is the idea of "the day gig". It's fairly easy to understand why it doesn't get top billing. It's not the most glamorous subject compared to our core interest, and quite frankly most composers rightfully shy away from telling anyone about a day job for fear that it might be interpreted as "not being serious" about film composing. It's a traditional dirty little secret, but it bears some scrutiny because it can be such an important part of sustaining the effort to "make it" as a full-time film composer.
And even though I’ve been in Los Angeles for several years and have worked on my share of projects, I still need the steady...

The old saying goes: "Time is money" -- and it's not worth Dr. Dre's time to collect the money owed to him by the State of California. According to the website for the California State Controller's Office, Dre (real name Andre Young) is owed $132.98 in back wages. Dre's beats are in such high demand, it would probably cost him more money to try and collect it. More Dr. Dre Dr. Dre Prescribes F-Bomb to...

Forget the British Invasion — are we in the midst of a Caribbean music invasion? Coming down a road paved by Rihanna, Sean Paul and Sean Kingston is Virgin Islands native Iyaz, who is tearing up the radio and iTunes waves with his infectious island-infused single, "Replay."
"I'm actually trying to catch up with 'Replay' right now," Iyaz told MTV News. "It's like a roller-coaster ride that took off without me — I'm actually running behind the roller-coaster, trying to get in, you know? 'Replay' took off — it was released in September — and it's been nothing but uphill since then."
Iyaz said that making music was just something he did "for fun" while attending school for digital recording. He would then post his songs on MySpace for his friends and family back home to hear.
