The great irony of Halloween is that in subjecting ourselves to scares of the kitschy seasonal-grocery-aisle variety, we somehow inoculate ourselves, for a moment, the Irl horrors that so consistently plague us each day online in the news each day. But horror movies and other October-end entertainments aren’t necessarily always simply a distraction. Just as often they’re an honest expression of universal human anxieties, dressed up in a foul-smelling rubber mask from the ad-hoc aisles of your local Spirit Halloween retail outlet.
Why we love it: October is the ideal and most obvious time to revisit Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Though each Halloween episode of the series is wonderful in its own way (shout-out to sexy-ghost Willow), it’s “Fear, Itself” that I still watch every year. The Scooby Gang finds themselves trapped inside a fraternity house of horrors, as fear demon “Gachnar” exploits their deepest anxieties I...

The holiday sequence of animated Charlie Brown films spans Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. However, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown differs as it contains one storyline secret, which turned this animated movie into a timeless classic. What is the one universal theme that runs through the film?
The storyline secret of ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ centers on one universal message
The storyline of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown appears basic enough. A child believes that a fictional character called The Great Pumpkin appears out of the pumpkin patch and delivers toys to children.
Linus Van Pelt is the central character in the story. He believes that The Great Pumpkin is similar to Santa Claus.
Hopefully, Linus sits in his neighborhood pumpkin patch, forgoing trick or treating with his friends and waiting for The Great Pumpkin to appear. Linus’ friends poke fun at him, and only one stays back,...

Based on the premise alone, A Ghost Story, the new film from Ain’t Them Bodies Saints and Pete’s Dragon director David Lowery, sounds kind of...silly? Or at least the image of Casey Affleck wearing a literal sheet over his head like one of the kids in It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown sounds silly. But our film editor A.A. Dowd saw A Ghost Story at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and calls the film “a sneakily ambitious meditation on life after death, the endurance of romantic connection, and the value we place on the spaces we occupy.”
Affleck stars as a man known only as C, who comes back to haunt the home he used to share with his widow, M (Rooney Mara), after his untimely and sudden death. Unable to communicate with his beloved, C watches helplessly as M grieves and eventually moves...

Halloween is a time when regular folk allow themselves to see the world as us horror lovers do – weird and wonderful, sinister mischief with tongue in cheek under (and over) tones. They watch that scary movie they’ve been meaning to get to for the past year, string up skeletons, and parade around at office parties in the latest ironic costumes (expect tons of Trumps and Weiners this year). But for the fearful faithful, this is our workaday; we watch the films daily, display our rooms with terror trinkets, and dress up as our favourite icons at constant conventions around the globe. So what separates the actual day of Halloween from our normal routine? TV viewing, of course.

Knott’s Scary Farm is an event in Southern California that I personally look forward to each year. Whether it is the mazes, rides, or amazing shows, this event never disappoints.
This year they revealed one of the newest mazes, titled Shadow Lands, that takes you on a journey of the samurai, and it was by far my favorite maze. The opening is an interesting type of stage with actors and an animatronic before you have to choose a path. After you begin the path, they surround you with monsters and other insane scares that are sure to frighten the guests.
The next maze that I considered a favorite of mine was Special Ops: Infected. In this particular maze, you are given a laser gun and sent off with a group of individuals as a team to fight your way through zombies and other creatures. As you wind your way through,...

Every year as Halloween gets closer, basic cable and the DVD racks at big box stores are flooded with Halloween programming for kids—Disneyfied TV movies and animated specials featuring all their favorite characters in costume. But are these cash-ins any good? If you’re trying to foster a love of horror in your little ones—or just looking for something age-appropriate to show them during October—navigating the seas of “kid-friendly” content can be irritating at best, downright impossible at worst.
Because I both love horror movies and have small children, I have my own picks for what I’ll be showing my kids until they’re of an age for… oh, I don’t know… Cannibal Holocaust. All these choices are subjective and entirely dependent on what different kids can handle.

And so The Great Pumpkin Spice-Off was born. We pulled together every major orange snack we could find—from cookies to cream cheese—and ate...

The holiday season is fast approaching, and to prepare for Christmas, artist Nicolas Delort has created a magical illustration inspired by A Charlie Brown Christmas. Delort is the same artist who brought us the wicked cool art for It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. His latest endeavor turned out just as amazing. As I stare at this piece, I can't help but just feel complete and utter happiness. This is what he had to say about it:
"I wanted to do Great Pumpkin and this one as a diptych of sorts right from the start and as soon as the Great Pumpkin sketch was approved, I had the idea for Charlie Brown Christmas.
"Both share the “boy and his faith” theme but while Great Pumpkin is all about Linus’ optimism and hope, Charlie Brown Christmas is more about Charlie’s disappointment and resentment towards what the holiday has become…so...

It's always fun when our favorite TV shows give us Halloween themed episodes during this fun and creepy time of year. Some shows offer us real horror, while others use the opportunity to make us laugh. There are certain Halloween episodes that I have enjoyed watching over the years that have stuck with me, and I've put together a list of ten of my favorites that I think are awesome. I didn't include Halloween specials like It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown or Garfield's Halloween Special because those was more specialized, and not really a part of a series. You can go through my picks below, and when you're done, let me know what some of your favorite Halloween episodes are!
The X-Files - "Home"

Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween if you didn’t sit down in front of your television with the heating cranked way up watching the timeless animated classic It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on your 50 inch plasma.
The times may have changed since the first time you saw Snoopy and co celebrating Halloween but there’s no taking anything away from this all time gem of a family movie. Originally commissioned off the success of A Charlie Brown Christmas, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown follows the Peanuts gang – in particular the blanket loving Linus – one Halloween night as they await the arrival of the fabled Great Pumpkin.
When CBS commissioned the film it was a huge risk as back in those days Halloween wasn’t deemed worthy of its own TV specials. Nothing could be further from the truth these days with The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror...

It's time to round up our favorite celebrity Twitter updates, and today, we're looking at Halloween from a not-so-glamorous perspective. Seth Meyers shared his favorite Halloween costume, which really sheds light on the whole vampire phenomenon, while Kelly Osbourne made a perfect pun, and we're not even sure if it was intended. This week's tweets also feature a different kind of Halloween horror, from Dane Cook's eyewitness account straight from a crazy party to Whitney Cummings's general musings about the state of humanity. It's all here in our favorite tweets of the week! Vampires have financial needs too, Ok? My favorite Halloween costume now and forever: Dracula at Atm — Seth Meyers (@sethmeyers) November 1, 2013 The Great Pumpkin is such a skeeze, Linus. I can't believe he never called you! It was a quiet start to the November sweep with shows slipping last night along with the Halloween-depressed Hut levels (down 8% from 8-11 Pm and 10% from 8-10 Pm). That makes Scandal‘s (2.9 in adults 18-49) week-to-week hold all the more impressive. And with CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (2.5) a repeat, Scandal ranked as the No. 1 program on Thursday night for the first time. ABC’s annual It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown special (2.2) doubled Once Upon A Time In Wonderland‘s rating in the 8 Pm hour last week but was down 19% from last year. Grey’s Anatomy (2.6) slipped 7% but ABC still won the night in adults 18-49, the network’s first time topping the opening night of the November sweep in 6 years. Of course, it was an atypical night. NBC too saw an improvement in the 8 Pm hour by airing a Halloween special, SNL Halloween (1.7). The network carried a football game in Cincinnati,...

Fast National ratings for Thursday, October 31, 2013. "Its The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" comfortably outdrew ABC's normal 8 p.m. dramas and helped the network lead Thursday night among young viewers. Overall, though, CBS won despite a repeat of "Big Bang Theory" leading to significant drops for both "The Millers" and "Crazy Ones." While CBS' comedies were down, CBS can be enthusiastic about "Elementary" beating "Scandal" overall for the first time this season, even if "Scandal" still dominated "Elementary" among young viewers. A "Saturday Night Live" Halloween special gave NBC a big boost in the 8 p.m. hour...

Halloween is basically my Christmas. I can't wait for all the treats, decorating, and of course, the TV specials. When I had the Chiller channel, they always showed cool countdowns, and even if I had seen them 800 times, I couldn't get enough. When I was little, I would get excited for It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and Garfield. There were always Halloween episodes of my favorite Nickelodeon shows too. This year, the kiddos will get treated to Toy Story Of Terror! I don't have an...

Fall has settled in on The Mindy Project, but while the leaves and the lattes may have changed, the quality of laughs the show induces has not.
"Halloween" set the stage for a big nighttime date between Josh and Mindy, but also had her asking why must a woman choose between hot and funny when it comes to costumes. Her indecision as to what to wear sort of mirrored the direction this episode wanted to go at times, but all in all it was more treat than trick.
Let's get the business end of things out of the way and discuss the parts of the episode that were on par with the old ladies who handed out change and apples to trick-or-treaters. Another week and yet another pointless scene featuring Anna Camp's character, but this time we also got to meet her equally awkward and overacting daughter.
Seriously, what gives with that whole friendship?...

I think of Charlie Brown as a movie star since some of his best work is in full-length features like Snoopy, Come Home and Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown. Now I can also call him a Twitter phenomenon since he's subject of the joke meme #RejectedPeanutsSpecials.
