“Good Times,” which celebrates its 50th anniversary on Feb. 8, suffered from an identity crisis during its six-season run on CBS. So much so, the lead actors — Esther Rolle and John Amos — would leave the popular second spinoff of ‘All in the Family”(Rolle would eventually return) because the sitcom changed focus.
Norman Lear ruled the airwaves in the 1970s. He blew up the conception of a family sitcom in 1971 with the CBS sitcom “All in the Family” which focused on a working class family from Queen lead by the bigoted patriarch Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor). During the first season, Bea Arthur guest starred as Maude, Edith Bunker’s (Jean Stapleton) favorite cousin who was the antithesis of Archie-outspoken, much married, ultra-liberal.
And after a second appearance on “All in the Family,” Arthur got her own series “Maude” in the fall of 1972. The breakout performer on that series was Esther...

In 2010, a 23-year-old fashion designer named Andy South competed on Project Runway‘s eighth season and sparred against some wild competition: the histrionic Michael Costello, the deadpan hero Mondo Guerra, the unwaveringly self-assured Gretchen Jones (who won the season, outraging many devoted fans), and the sweet but bizarre Casanova. Now, the studious and methodical South is back as more confident alum for Project Runway All-Stars 3, which premieres tonight, but with a brand new life in tow.
Since South’s last appearance on Lifetime’s reality competition staple, the designer has completed a gender transition. Now, the Waianae, Hi native is a woman known by the name Ari South — a name picked out by Ari’s mother. We caught up with South to discuss pleasing a whole new panel of judges (including host Alyssa Milano), the story behind her new name, and how her personal transformation has affected her work.

"Let's face it, I'm tired!"
It's the final episode! Would it provide any surprises?
No.
Actually, that's not true. There was one huge surprise. The designers are told they have four days to create their final mini-collections, but they don't have to to go it alone. All of the eliminated designers are brought back, and each finalist gets to pick one to help them get to the runway. This was expected, as it's been done ... on every Project Runway. The surprise is that Anthony Ryan picks new Bff Joshua to help him ... and Josh says no.
Unfortunately, it's not bitchiness that keeps Josh from offering his services (which would have been believable), it's something far more ... understandable. He's just ... tired.
Emilio chooses Althea, and Uli chooses Casanova, who apparently must be in a "dark place" too.
Let's take a look at how each of the designers fared!

How can you root against this?
This week the designers have to create a ready-to-wear "wow" look while meeting a retail budget of $700 - $900. Their guest mentor and judge is Elie Tahari, who actually goes into the workroom with Joanna Coles to talk to the designers and assess their unfinished designs. It's the first time this season that the guest judge has entered the workroom, and I think it should happen more often, because it was one of the most affecting moments of the entire season. The designers learned his bootstrap backstory while receiving advice and encouragement about navigating the world of fashion.
The best moment of the show was when Anthony video chatted with close pal Matthew, who said he was giving up "Beer Night" at work to talk to him. But that's what best friends do for each other. And I'm glad My Sweet Anthony has someone to...

The unconventional challenge might be a favorite of Project Runway fans, but not for designer Casanova, who was eliminated in Thursday's All Stars episode. The competitors were tasked with using items from a Christmas store to make non-holiday design. Casanova, a 36-year-old who lives in New York, struggled during the challenge, starting over several times. He created two different looks before finally sending a third -- made with items the other designers had bought and didn't need -- down the runway. I don't know if it was the excitement of super special guest judge Kylie Minogue, or because the "unconventional challenges" are usually a lot of fun (if not fashion forward), but this was one of the most entertaining episodes of a very lackluster season.
The designers meet Carolyn Murphy at a NYC shipyard because ... well, I have no idea why the designers met Carolyn Murphy at a NYC shipyard. It makes no logical sense, because it has nothing to do with the challenge or with the introduction of some bigwig watchmaker, who tells them that the winner will receive a fancy watch. Actually, I was hoping Josh was right when he predicted a pirate theme, because I'd love to see them work with eyepatches, peg legs, and dead shoulder parrots.

On Project Runway All Stars "A Very Unconventional Christmas" designers were faced with an unconventional Christmas challenge. While using supplies from a holiday store their designs could not actually look like the materials came from the store.
Casanova, Ivy and Joshua struggled with the challenge and Casanova was sent home.
Guest judge Lala Anthony recently spoke with reporters in a conference call to discuss what she looked for when judging, which designer she'd most like to wear and more.

"And now you will be hunted, one by one."
There's no getting around it ... this was a terrible episode. The designers have to use "green" materials to make a red carpet look, but all that means is that they forced the designers to try to create something un-ugly from the tackiest, ugliest swatches we've ever seen on Project Runway. We're talking sub-sub-motel curtains.
I have to give the designers credit for coming up with what they did, considering what they had to work with, but none of the final designs are what you'd call memorable. But at least they kept a sense of humor, and it's telling that the highlight of the episode was Casanova announcing that he smells, "Like a rat die in my armpit," which is a perfect metaphor.
So how did each designer do? Let's take a look. [photo_gallery|node_id=48409]

"And the sleeves will also work for our Robin Williams challenge"
This week the designers have to create an avant-garde, androgynous look for a male and female model. I thought this a terrific challenge (finally) as it would force many of the designers to go out of their comfort zones and get their creative juices flowing. And some of them gave it a game go. Althea and Uli stepped up, and while their looks weren't a total success, at least they tried, unlike the ever-annoying Laura, who is obviously remaining because the show needs someone to hate.

"Why yes, I am wearing a butt plug with ... mud flaps?" Seriously, what the hell is this?
This week had the potential to be interesting, but the challenge was just too random to be completely compelling. The designers had to choose a picture from one their "fans" on "Social Media," which in this case means Twitter. They had to create something to complement the picture, while not copying it.
For me, the highlight was watching Anthony Ryan discuss being diagnosed with cancer, and how he charged full steam ahead with his life while undergoing chemotherapy. "Designing and fashion, that was who I relied on when I had cancer. It wasn't family or friends or doctors. It was myself and designing."
Even if he did look like a Solid Gold dancer while discussing it

I hate it when the chaperones dance with the kids
The second outing of this season of All Stars was ... terrible. "Designers must create disco-wear for a glamorous night out inspired by Nine West's '70s Brights shoe collection." Disco-wear? Fabulous. I've been waiting for this challenge forever. But instead of conjuring images of moon and spoons, sweaty dress shields, hand jobs in the corner, and that one prom night when a madman tried to kill Jamie Lee Curtis on the dancefloor, this Disco disaster was more like, well, a Lifetime version of Disco.
There was one brief moment when I was taken back to my wee years back in the seventies. Casanova's design instantly transported me to that decade. Then I realized why. It had nothing to do with disco ... it was my sister and I playing Cat's Cradle for hours on end.
So how did each designer do?...

We've only just said goodbye to the contestants of Project Runway's tenth season, and it's already time for a second go 'round for our All Stars! This season is a bit of a mixed bag - there's Joshua McKinley (the runner-up of the ninth cycle), Emilio Sansa, Althea Harper, Anthony Ryan Auld, Suede Baum, Laura Kathleen Planck, Ivy Higa, Peach Carr, Casanova, Uli Herzner, Kayne Gillaspie and Andrae Ganzalo. I only remember a handful of these people, but oh well. The group meets up at Parson's for the first time, where they continually call one another "amazing" in various forms. But wait - there's another contestant, and it's the hilariously amazing (pardon the expression) Wendy Pepper from season one! She's been known as a total bitch (not my words, I swear) and she's vowed not to change this time around, either - after all, (more)...

After the underwhelming Season Ten of Project Runway, I'm not sure it was a good idea for Lifetime to plunge immediately into a new cycle, as its easy to experience burnout (and this is the second All Stars series this year).
But luckily, this batch of designers is road tested for drama, skill and just a drop of crazy, so maybe they can deliver some excitement ...or at least, tears and slapfights.
The designers meet up, get acquainted (or re-acquainted), new host Carolyn Murphy informs them that the winner will receive the biggest prize in Runway history, with cash and fashion crap totaling $350,000 dollars, and then they are immediately thrust into the the thick of things (this series is only an hour an episode, which adds to the frenzy and eliminates the dull spots, thankfully).
Mentor Joanna Coles has them choose teams, and each team is assigned to create a mini collection with "attitude.

We can quibble about the name Project Runway: All-Stars, since I don't see prized contestants like Nick Verreos or Jillian Lewis in this lineup, but the second installment of Lifetime's alumni competition is probably going to be entertaining all the same. Truly. There are enough wild cards at play here -- each equipped with a wildly different skill type and level -- to make the season worth a run. The only problem? We need to rank which of these all-stars is destined for success. So here, just two days shy of Thursday's premiere, my predictions for the rankings of Project Runway All-Stars' new season. Spoiler: Pretty sure I made it work, guys.
13. Peach Carr
Now, I am a human being, so I love Peach Carr, her constant catchphrasing (Loved when she said that her skirt wasn't short enough to "show the good china?), and her ritzy suburban Chicago flair.

Project Runway has become something of a caricature of itself in the past few years, but let's never forget how amazing this show was and -- sometimes -- still is. The reason it remains my favorite reality competition show of allllll time (excepting perhaps The Mole) is its judges are such callous buzzards. So offensively dismissive. So haughty in their derision. So unnecessarily mean. So everything I want my children to be. Ten seasons in, Michael Kors is still the most damning character on that panel, and because he turns 53 today, I say we revisit his most hilarious and cutting barbs. So happy birthday, Mr. Kors! The crotch on your birthday is Insane.

First, The CW announces an all-star version of America’s Next Top Model. And now, Lifetime tells us that we’ll see some of our favorite reality stars back on an all-star edition of Project Runway?! Is 2011 just a year-long Christmas?! Because this is quite a gift to us pop-culture junkies: In addition to a ninth season of the Emmy-nominated fashion competition, the network will air Project Runway All Stars, eight one-hour episodes featuring previous contestants. This makes it slightly different than the two-hour Project Runway: All-Stars Challenge, which saw the return of players Jeffrey Sebelia, Santino Rice, Daniel Vosovic,...

There have been a few seasons where it felt like Project Runway was trying to find itsfooting after the move to Lifetime. The designers seemed uninspired and theirstories weren’t that compelling. There were no great stand-out personalitieslike Austin Scarlett or Jay McCarroll.
But this season, Runway is strutting its stuff again. There have been controversial designs like Peaches’ polka dot dress and Casanova’s granny looks.Still, the new designers like Mondo and Michael C. are far more talented andinteresting than in recent years. And, enhanced by an extrahalf-hour long, 90-minute format, which allows for more time with the judgesduring deliberation. After all, designers are in and they are out, but HeidiKlum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia are here to stay.
In a recent conference call interview Garcia spoke about Marie Claire, Tim Gunn’s recent judges on “crack” comment, and whatgives a Runway winner staying power.

['Project Runway' - 'A Rough Day on the Runway']
'Project Runway' has gotten really good at blindsiding their contestants. In this episode, the contestants had to create an American Sportswear outfit with Jackie Kennedy as their muse. Jackie Kennedy was a great example of the All-American look, and she was always classy and put together. The challenge this week reminded me of Season 3's Fashion Icon challenge, except that everyone had the same icon.
When all the contestants thought they had their stereotypical one-day, $150 budget, Tim popped up and announced another challenge: Create a corresponding outerwear look.
With nine contestants around, the editors decided that there was still extras that provided no drama. Let's all forget that April was even in this episode. She provided no drama, created yet another black dress and was placed in the middle-scoring contestants. Without Peach or Casanova around, April designed by herself.

Casanova has revealed that his favorite moments on Project Runway happened after the cameras finished rolling. The Puerto Rico native left the design show this week but told Digital Spy that his fellow contestants made his time there worthwhile by encouraging him about his difficulties after the challenges ended. "My favorite part [of the experience] was probably that after the cameras went away, most of the contestants expressed to me how proud they were about how I did (more)...

Casanova has admitted that he struggled while on Project Runway because of the language barrier. The 33-year-old - who was eliminated from the Lifetime competition during last week's episode - revealed that he had only moved to the Us five months before appearing on the show and felt that his inability to speak fluent English made his experience more difficult. "I have many struggles with language barriers. Probably most of them were at the beginning of the show but I have to say also that I had to recognise I've only been (more)...

The summer is waving its freckled, tan arm at us as we close in on the last two episodes of several reality shows that take with them a couple of gays you either loved or loved to hate. But fear not, for I’ve got my eye on a few returning reality shows, as well as some new stuff that promises to give you plenty of reasons to stay glued to that couch.
For now, let’s enjoy a little reality.

Friends, I’ve been to the mothership and “Project Runway fashion show” be thy name!
Yes, Fashion Week is in full swing here in NYC and the PR designers brought their crowd-wowing best to Lincoln Center yesterday. I can’t give away details, but have solace in the knowledge that, I know no more than you do. And I did see some amazing collections — and a few celebrities!

Ah, the beauty of Project Runway group challenges -- they always bring out the best and worst in the designers. Luckily this week, most of the ugly turned beautiful in the form of some very creative collaborations. But, first, there was drama. The episode kicked off with the designers joining Tim Gunn and Michael Kors for a boat cruise around Manhattan to find inspiration for their challenge: to design resort wear. Simple (and fun!) enough for most, although Mondo and April were both nervous about their lack of experience in the genre. After their little trip and a visit to Mood,...

What a topsy-turvy episode of "Project Runway," right?
Very quickly, let's go over the challenge and each of the teams. Spoilers!
The Challenge: Create resort wear, but then have your partner execute your design.
The Teams:
Mondo/Michael C. - We heart Mondo. He was decidedly not happy to be paired with the most ostracized designer on "Runway," but he not only pulled off the technical aspects of the challenge, but was open enough to really get to know and learn to like the much maligned Michael. As for their designs, Mondo's might have been too "juniors," but it still fit his fun sensibility. We think he could have pushed it a tiny bit more. Michael C's was executed beautifully, but it was a bit expected. (Oh, and how cute were they being all Tweedle Dee and Dum on the couch after judgment?)
Valerie/Andy - We just love Valerie,...

And now, boys and girls, a message from the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority. They would like to thank the Project Runway judges and contestants for repeating the phrase throw someone under the bus more times than the turnstiles at Times Square-42nd Street can count. Reminding viewers of the great invention that is public transit does wonders for business. Still, the Mta must also point out the importance of public transit safety. Fun as it may be to joke about on reality television, you really should never throw anyone under the bus. Ever. It has catastrophic consequences. For instance,...

Casanova has become the eighth designer to exit Project Runway. The 33-year-old fashion designer from Puerto Rico was sent home on last night's episode of the Lifetime competition. This week's challenge saw the remaining designers having to construct "resort wear" and to get them in the mood, they were taken on a yacht around Manhattan with Michael Kors. However, back at the workroom, Tim Gunn revealed that there was a twist - they would be in teams of two which meant they must get one of their fellow contestants to actually make their design. The teams were: Valerie and Andy; Michael C and Mondo; Casanova and Gretchen; Ivy and Michael D; and April and Christopher. Heidi, Michael and Nina were joined by actress Kristen Bell for the final runway. Gretchen, Michael D, Christopher and Valerie were immediately sent through, while April, Andy, Michael (more)...

Calm down, spoiler-averse PopWatchers. Though the news is all across the Internet, I know how some of you react to information like this, so I won’t reveal anything until after the jump. In this space, I’ll simply say that this morning, at New York Fashion Week’s new Lincoln Center location, 10 designers from the eighth season of Project Runway showed collections at the finale taping. No, there aren’t 10 finalists this year. Like last season, the producers rounded up the six designers whom we fans at home have yet to see get kicked off as of this week’s episode.

With her new denim line in stores now, it's only fitting that Jessica Simpson is getting her fashionable feet wet at the runway shows of New York City Fashion Week. And on Thursday, the starlet made a trip to the Project Runway finale, where she was announced as the surprise guest judge. It’s been a busy week, kind readers! So far, I’ve taken the wrong subway to Queens (twice), been treated like a leper by a wide variety of wait staff across Manhattan, and nearly attacked by mutant rats foraging for brunch in a nearby dumpster.
I love this city!
But enough about the real world. Let’s talk reality!

Raise your hand if you honestly believed Ragan (pictured right) would not be going home this week. If you raised your hand, bless your doe-eyed optimism. But I don't ever want to be on a reality show with you.
As us more pessimistic viewers suspected, Ragan was given the boot this week. The out (and very wise) Ragan uncovered the alliance between Hayden, Lane, and Enzo some time ago. He also knew that having only Britney in the house as an ally was like having no one at all.

We'll get right to it, because this show is incredibly long as it is, but there's a couple of things to get out of the way first: One, we're starting with episode 5, but you can read my recaps for previous episodes on my blog. Two, this is my first time writing a recap for Pajiba. Cut me some slack as I try to figure out what format works best for you guys and how to keep it from being 20,000 words long. I'll summarize as best as I can here, so as not to overwhelm everybody.
Seems like I picked the wrong episode for that because the shit hit the fan big time last Thursday? It's possibly the most dramatic, insane episode of "Project Runway" yet, and I've been watching from the start.
Previously! The judges were crackalicious in the Crazyass Hat challenge. April made diapers, but Kristin made something worse and went home,...

This week's Project Runway kicked off with the type of challenge all designers fear: the team challenge. Contestants formed two teams of six — last week's winner, Michael C., got to start the selection process — and Heidi Klum stressed there were to be no team leaders. If only it were that easy. The 12 remaining designers ended up in two groups of somewhat varying strength: previous winners Gretchen, Andy and Michael C. anchored a team that included A.J., Chris and Ivy, while April, Casanova, Michael D., Mondo, Peach and Valerie formed team two. (Poor Peach was the last to be picked!

Every season on Project Runway, we all eagerly await the group challenge, that reliable supplier of above-average drama. Designers clash, egos are bruised, and someone gets thrown under the Greyhound. But even after the past few weeks’ steady unveiling of Gretchen’s wench within, I wasn’t expecting this season’s group challenge to deliver such a knockout punch of mayhem. For the first time, I appreciated the 90-minute format because it allowed for an extended judging session that revealed, in detail, the molten hot evil bubbling inside the string bean–limbed narcissist from Oregon. (S08E05) This was the first season of 'Project Runway' in which the contestants were broken into only two teams. This episode allowed the editors to have "The Gretchen Show" slowly implode during the judging, as she spent the whole time defending her clothes, then trying her best to distance herself from the whole collection. There is an editor out there who hates Gretchen and loved watching her fall apart.
The challenge was really simple: The teams had to create a six-piece collection that would follow the trends of Fall 2010. Each collection would be given two inspirations, one concept, one textile and a team budget of $1,000. They also had the help of Peter Butler from Garnier to guide them with their hair. Each person had to pick the next person in their team, very similar to the now-standard 'Survivor' schoolyard pick.

Welcome back to the Runway! I’m filling in for Missy last-minute, so please forgive my lack of any real insight about fashion. Or maybe that doesn’t even matter! After all, this week we had one of those “unconventional challenges” we all know and some of us love. It was a Cause For Celebration: Create an outfit from materials found in a party store. Obviously, Betsey Johnson was the guest judge and this was perfect because the name of this week’s shopping locale, “Party Glitters,” is pretty much a synonym for “Betsey Johnson dresses.” Not many other designers...

I’d like to begin by putting a twenty on Mondo to win. Okay, so Gretchen has swept the first two competitions, and our first gay casualty, Nicholas, was auf weidersehen’ed right off the catwalk.

McKell may have been kicked off, but designers Casanova, Jason Troisi and Iva Higa still need to watch their backs — they could be sent home next!
It wasn’t just a regular premiere July 29 for the eighth season of Lifetime’s Project Runway. It was still audition time for the designers and one of them just didn’t make the cut. Host Heidi Klum, judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia and guest judge Selma Blair sent 29-year-old McKell Maddox packing!
But, McKell wasn’t the only ones the judges were tempted to cut loose; they also called out designers Casanova, Jason Troisi and Ivy Higa for their questionable designs.
The first challenge began with Heidi asking the contestants to “please open up [your bags] and pull out one item you would like to incorporate into your garment … now pass it to the person on your right.”
