Between February 10 and March 7, a dozen motion picture guilds lauded the most outstanding achievements in their respective fields during the previous year. The 2024 guild awards season then officially concluded with the announcement of the Writers Guild of America honors on April 14. In the end, “Oppenheimer” outpaced all of its competitors with prizes from nine guilds.
Typically, all 13 guilds hand out their trophies before the corresponding Oscars take place, but this year’s WGA Awards were delayed six weeks because of the organization’s recent 148-day strike. The groups whose ceremonies preceded the Oscars on March 10 comprise art directors, directors, makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, visual effects artists, actors, producers, sound mixers, film editors, cinematographers, sound editors, and casting directors.

“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”
In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Costume Designers Guild Awards: ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ & ‘Saltburn’ Take Film Prizes – Winners List
Barbie, Poor Things and Saltburn took the top film prizes at the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at NeueHouse in Hollywood.
Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddingham won for Period Film, and Saltburn‘s Sophie Canale took Contemporary Film. The night’s first film prize went to last year’s biggest film, with Jacqueline Durran winning for Barbie.
Waddingham and Durran also are up for the Best Costume Design Oscar, vying against Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon and Oppenheimer.
Since the guild launched its awards show in 1999, the Academy Award for Costume Design has gone to a period film every year but thrice, with only Mad Max: Fury Road (2016), Black Panther (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023) bucking the trend.

Since January 2, the four motion picture guilds comprising makeup artists & hairstylists, costume designers, art directors, and sound mixers have announced their nominations for the year’s best work in their respective fields. While there has been plenty of variation in their choices, all four organizations have shown solidarity in recognizing three films: “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer”. All of these rank among our top 10 Best Picture candidates, with “Oppenheimer” in first place, “Barbie” in third, and “Maestro” in sixth.
Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

Three of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2024 Oscars reaped bids on January 4 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things”contend here in the period picture category against “Maestro,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer.”
The Oscar frontrunner, “Barbie” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire.”
‘The contemporary costume contenders are “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn.”
Our two other predicted Oscar nominees — “The Color Purple” and “Wonka” — can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored...

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

“This could easily have been set in Hollywood,” Emerald Fennell said of her new film Saltburn, during a post-screening Q&a at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.
The actual setting is, in fact, a long way from Hollywood. Fennell’s sophomore follow-up to her Oscar Best Picture-nominated, Best Screenplay-winner Promising Young Woman, Saltburn follows Oliver (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford University student who befriends Felix (Jacob Elordi), an aristocratic, manor-born adonis.
Plunged into the eccentric world of the über-posh British upper classes on a visit to Felix’s family estate, Oliver is both awkward outsider and furtive observer. We meet Felix’s parents (Rosamund Pike and Richard E. Grant), his ascerbic cousin (Archie Madekwe), and wayward sister (Alison Oliver). Fennell also reunites with her Promising Young Woman star Carey Mulligan, who has an all-too-short stint as an unhinged houseguest.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Although “Saltburn” and “Rustin” are both inherently queer period pieces with highly committed lead actors at the forefront, their respective stars Barry Keoghan and Colman Domingo give two performances that are working toward a Best Oscar nomination from opposite ends.
If one were to have fallen in love with Keoghan last year based on his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which earned him a Best Supporting Actor nod, they might be thrown off by his arch turn in Emerald Fennell’s sophomore effort depicting an Oxford student that fighting to stay in the good graces of his aristocratic classmate. After watching the film, “The Talented Mr. Ripley” may be an apt comparison, but that does not do justice to just how willing Keoghan is to reach new depths in “Saltburn.” He is much more in “The Killing of Sacred Deer” mode here, which coincidentally is the film Fennell has...

Sorry, Daphne Bridgerton fans, but there’s some bad news about her screen time this upcoming season.

How did “Bridgerton’s” Queen Charlotte meet her king? It’s time to find out thanks to a clip of their meet-cute, shared Saturday by Netflix as part of the streamer’s Tudum fan festival. (Watch the clip above.)
Young Queen Charlotte, played by India Amarteifio is determined to flee some sort of event (and what sounds like an arranged marriage) by climbing up a flowering and somewhat thorny vine. Corey Mylchreest, who plays Young King George, stumbles upon her, and not knowing who he is, she asks for his help in getting over the wall.
But, while she tries angle after angle, he refuses her requests and reveals his true identity, leaving her stunned.
The clip is fans’ first real look at the show, with Amarteifio bringing to life the beloved character originated by actress Golda Rosheuvel in “Bridgerton.”

As Season 3 of “Making the Cut” hits Prime Video Friday, Aug. 19, mentor Tim Gunn tells TheWrap how “Project Runway’s” major success delayed the start of its fellow design competition show.
“[‘Making the Cut’] actually is the show that Heidi [Klum] and I’ve wanted to do for years, but because of the success of ‘Project Runway,’ no one would let us tamper with the format,” Gunn told TheWrap.
Compared to “Project Runway,” which Klum hosted alongside Gunn as the designers’ mentor from 2004 to 2018, Gunn sees the Prime Video series as “a much broader conversation,” which takes designers’ brands and overall potential into account during judging.

Television’s new international identity was confirmed on both sides of the camera with this year’s Emmy noms. Actors, writers, helmers, producers and below-the-line talent from outside the U.S. have all emerged as global contenders in the annual kudos contest.
Be it “Succession,” mentioned in 25 categories; “Ted Lasso,” which received 20 noms; or South Korea’s “Squid Game,” recipient of 14 noms and the first-ever drama series Emmy nominee not in the English language, TV’s international face came to the fore.
“Succession” was commissioned by HBO but the show, said to be inspired by the feuding Murdoch dynasty, was created by British screenwriter Jesse Armstrong, nominated for an Emmy in one of the writing categories.
In common with so much highend TV, fish-out-of-water feelgood saga “Ted Lasso,” a breakout hit for Apple TV +, was filmed in the U.K. and featured a cast bristling with British talent. No fewer than eight U.

The wildness of the natural world exists in opposition to the careful curation of a television set, but on Netflix’s Bridgerton, the two work in tandem to create a colorful pastiche of a bygone era marked by opulence and beauty. In season one of the show, floral arrangements formed the backdrop for a storyline that gripped viewers with its passion and dramatic suspense; in season two, flowers emerged as a main character unto themselves, oftentimes mirroring costumes, offering suggestions on setting, leaving clues of what a given scene might reveal.
Will Hughes Jones, who led production design for season two, spoke to THR about the process of designing floral arrangements in collaboration with the show’s writers, florists, and costume and set designers; how England’s seasons impacted the use of artificial versus real flowers; and his observations on how flower trends have bloomed over time.

Since January 2021, “Bridgerton” has twice broken the record for most-watched English language Netflix show, with its second season outpacing its first by a margin of over 30 million viewing hours. The period drama series, which is designed to eventually give each of the eight Bridgerton siblings their own full love story, has wasted no time in amassing a passionate fanbase during its relatively brief existence. Included in the fandom is actress Yvette Nicole Brown, who recently moderated a 2022 Emmys FYC panel consisting of showrunner/executive producer/writer Chris Van Dusen, composer Kris Bowers, costume designer Sophie Canale, and cast members Simone Ashley, Charithra Chandran and Nicola Coughlan. “Bridgerton” Season 2 featured a big, dramatic wedding scene that spanned an entire episode, but costume designer Sophie Canale and her team had to put those looks together – including a bride’s wedding dress, a maid of honor gown, and costumes for an entire church’s worth of attendees — in the same amount of time as every block of the show.

Corsets were an essential undergarment for Victorian women, which lifted and supported the bosom, created a flat front and provided women a form-fitted figure. But they were notoriously restrictive. As essential as corsets are to the 18th century, they are equally as important to period costume design in the 21st century.
However, as period-era dramas filled the air, costume designers of many Emmy-contending shows followed up to dress their cast members in corsets — but with the modern twist of added comfort.
Carrie Coon, who plays wealthy socialite Bertha Russell in HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” is no stranger to wearing corsets. Her theatrical background meant she wore them on stage under heavy, upholstered fabrics that had to withstand all kinds of weather. During a costume fitting for the show’s second season, Coon tells Variety: “Every job is different. No matter what the period and so they’re built differently.

There are no clear frontrunners among the historical series vying for this year’s Creative Arts Emmys — where many of the awards honoring artistic and technical achievements in television are specifically geared toward programming with a period setting. In 2021, these categories were dominated by “The Queen’s Gambit,” the Cold War-era chess drama whose nine Creative Arts Emmys included wins for period costume and production design. Elsewhere, the ’70s- and ’80s-set fourth season of “The Crown” bested all dramas, regardless of period and genre, in the areas of cinematography, casting, and editing. But neither Netflix show will defend their titles in 2022: “The Queen’s Gambit” was a limited series, and Season 5 of “The Crown” won’t premiere until November.
