You may remember a few days ago when White House Correspondents Association head Jeff Mason said that the Trump White House asked him to criticize a report from one of its members and he declined to do so. Well, Mason appeared on CNN's Reliable Sources this morning alongside the reporter in question: Politico's Tara Palmeri.

If 2015 marked the "fourth quarter" of Obama's presidency — as mentioned at last year's White House Correspondents Association dinner — then 2016 finds him casually tacking on field goals as the clock runs out. Onstage at the annual roast of Washington and its press corps, the president was loose, funny, and completely at ease in front of a crowd that (generally) loves him; his remarks were delivered with the confidence of a man serving the last months of his second term, his approval rating up and his legacy assured. I gotta be honest: I hurt for Joel McHale during his White House Correspondents' roast. It takes a great deal of courage for a comedian to get up in front of any crowd, but when you're performing for the President and a host of the world's most powerful people, it's a whole other ball game. And if I'm being frank, it was a little bit painful to watch (full video below). It's not that the jokes were weak, necessarily (though a lot of them were), but that once things started going south McHale seemed totally incapable of winning the audience back and instead chose to rush through the remainder as quickly as possible. Still, let's cut him some slack: there were definitely a few good lines in there. Below you can find my (charitably balanced) roundup of his best and worst moments. Worst: "I think [Obama] is one of the all-time great presidents,...

Joel McHale has made quite a name for himself as a host thanks to his hilarious pop-culture commentary on "The Soup." The latest event the "Community" star will emcee is the White House Correspondents Association Dinner on May 3.
While McHale's brand of comedy often errs on the side of scathing, chances are he'll be on pretty good behavior in front of President Barack Obama. It helps that the political landscape is something he is familiar with, so his comedic slant for hosting should be spot-on.
Whatever McHale pulls together, at least it should be better than the horrific job he did hosting Spike's hot mess of the Vgx. The online-only replacement for the Spike Video Game Awards was definitely not the network's best effort, and it didn't help that McHale acted like he would rather be waiting in line at the Dmv than hosting the show.
Poor Geoff Keighley.

Tom Brokaw sat out the last White House Correspondents Association Dinner, and he plans to do it again in 2013. The veteran newsman says the increasing tabloid level go the invited guests is what ruined it for him. "For me the breaking point was Lindsay Lohan," Brokaw tells Politico. The former "NBC Nightly News" anchor says the annual dinner must leave home viewers wondering, "'That's the Washington press corps?' I mean, there was more dignity at my daughter's junior prom than there is, what I'm seeing on C-span here."
Brokaw, a charter member of the Association, famously criticized the increasing spectacle of the dinner during a roundtable on "Meet the Press" in May 2012. He says the reason he felt the need to speak up is a concern for how the Beltway press is viewed.

The short answer: try to get his explanation for something he said on television that wasn't true. The long answer is, like Buzzfeed's Michael Hastings himself, a good deal more complicated, and interesting. On Sunday's Up with Chris Hayes, Hastings was part of a panel dedicated to chopping up the White House press corps like so much journalistic mirepoix, and related an anecdote from his gonzo e-book that served as a devastating critique of the White House press, and of White House Correspondents Association President Ed Henry. The only problem was that it wasn't true.

Being the host of the top television-awards show is only part of Jimmy Kimmel's very good year.
Newly engaged to Molly McNearney, a head writer on his weeknight ABC show, the star of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" also was the featured attraction at this past spring's high-profile White House Correspondents Association Dinner.
Moreover, his program -- which he'll bring to his native Brooklyn,. N.Y., for a week at the end of October -- will trade positions with "Nightline" in the network's late-night lineup come January. His value to ABC also is confirmed by its selection of him to host the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 23.
Don't expect the event at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre to make Kimmel suddenly reverent, though. "I guess it's human nature that if you know somebody, you are able to make a little bit more fun of them without them getting angry," he tells Zap2it.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" will shoot a week of shows in October, the ABC late night host told Kelly Ripa on her morning show Monday.
Kimmel, a Brooklyn native, has never brought his show on the road since its debut in 2003. He is scheduled to do the shows from the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the Fort Greene neighborhood from October 29 - November 2.
The show will also celebrate a new NBA team to the New York City borough. The New Jersey Nets recently relocated to Brooklyn, a move that became high profile partially thanks to co-owner Jay-z's hand in rebranding the team to reflect its new location.
According to a tweet from Kimmel, tickets to the shows will be available here.
"Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," Kimmel's NBC competitor, recently did several shows from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Notably, President Barack Obama appeared as Fallon's guest on the first episode.

ABC late night host Jimmy Kimmel may not have gotten the loudest laughs of recent White House Correspondents' Dinner hosts, but he did leave the stage at the Washington Hilton with the satisfaction of knowing he didn't bomb. Kimmel's half-hour speech was received with consistent, if not uproarious, laughter -- likely a result of his playing it relatively safe. By Correspondents' Dinner standards, and certainly compared to Seth Meyers' 2011 skewering of Donald Trump, Kimmel really wasn't that mean. Every year the White House Correspondents Association hosts a dinner where the members of the press gather with the president and the vice president for a meal and some entertainment. In recent years, it's become a sort of "nerd prom" where journalists invite fancy Hollywood folks to hang out while a comedian (this year: Jimmy Kimmel) makes fun of politicos.
According to the Whca, "The Whca dinner is traditionally attended by the President and First Lady as well as many other senior government officials and members of the press corps. Proceeds from the dinner go toward scholarships and awards aimed at supporting aspiring journalists and recognizing excellence in the profession."
The April 28, 2012 ceremony is hosted by Jimmy Kimmel with a star-studded guest list with the likes of Kim Kardashian, Lindsay Lohan, Tony Romo and more. For the full celeb lineup, click here.

He is at the center of cable TV's 24-hour news cycle, boasting the rare combination of endless depths of historical insight and a seemingly indefatigable stamina to preside over nightly broadcast marathons. And yet, Chris Matthews, who worked for Jimmy Carter and has covered politics since, still maintained his uniquely boyish enthusiasm for the glamor and inanities of Washington DC's campaigns and parties. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at THR and Google's Pre-White House Correspondents Association Dinner Party, Matthews excitedly pulled out the camera he had brought to snap photos of celebrities, and spoke about some of the

Washington — Mitt Romney hit an off note when he told a "humorous" story about his dad shutting down a factory.
Robert De Niro managed to get both Newt Gingrich and the Obama campaign riled up when he joked at an Obama fundraiser that America isn't ready for a white first lady.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry, still nursing wounds from his failed presidential campaign, did himself a world of good with his self-deprecating jokes at a recent Washington dinner.
Done right, humor can be a huge asset for a politician. But it is fumbled easily in the overheated environment of a political campaign.
That may be why Romney's aides sent him to the "The Tonight Show" this past week with these instructions: "Don't try and be funny."
The Republican presidential front-runner largely complied, and that worked out just fine for him. But he apparently forgot his advisers' advice the next day...

Washington, prepare to get ripped.
Jimmy Kimmel has been tapped as the emcee of the 2012 White House Correspondents Association dinner, where journalists, politicians (including the president) and celebrities mingle and listen to a comedian make fun of them. Kimmel follows "Saturday Night Live's" Seth Meyers, who did the honors earlier this year.
"I look forward to being a part of the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner," Kimmel says in a statement. "I love dinner."
We're going to go ahead and predict that after the April 28 event, you'll see some stories from the D.C. media sphere wondering if Kimmel went too far with his jokes (see Colbert, Stephen at the 2006 dinner). Kimmel is not known for pulling punches, so we're figuring that feathers will get ruffled.
And frankly, that is Ok with us. We're looking forward to the YouTube videos in late April.

"Win the Future," if you're not into the whole brevity thing. He registered it in '06. Then Obama stole it. Now Gingrich is taking it back. Winning!
Life-long presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich launched his latest candidacy with the slogan: "Win the Future." If that sounds familiar, you probably watched Obama's State of the Union address, where he debuted it to the world--or you saw the recent White House Correspondents Association dinner where Obama relegated it to joke status (start at 2:54 of Obama's own parody video).

What most folks don't realize--and the Atlantic deftly discovered today--is that Newt Gingrich, whose campaign only launched this week, actually registered "American Solutions for Winning the Future" with the IRS under section 527 of the tax code on October 6, 2006. The group has handled his political ops ever since.
The catchphrase failed to catch on with pushes from both politicians. And both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert...

Bristol Palin has admitted that she did have surgery done on her jaw, Us Magazine is reporting. The reality star stirred up controversy on April 30 in Washington, D.C. when she first debuted her new face at an afterparty for the White House Correspondents Association dinner. She immediately denied getting the surgery done. However, she later told Us Magazine that she had corrective jaw surgery done, not plastic surgery, in December 2010 after she finished her ‘Dancing With the Stars’ stint. “Yes, it improved the way I look, but surgery was necessary for medical reasons…so my jaw and teeth could properly realign,” Palin said. Palin said she’s happy with the...

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Ahn Entertainment) - Bristol Palin's noticeably slimmer face is due to surgery, the politician's daughter admitted. The former "Dancing with the Stars" contestant says that she underwent operation, but denies it was for cosmetic reasons.
Last month, Bristol appeared at an afterparty for the White House Correspondents Association dinner in Washington, D.C. sporting a slimmer body figure and with her double chin distinctly missing.
The 20-year-old former teen mom didn't acquire her new figure by dieting. She did it with a surgery, Sarah Palin's second born child and eldest daughter said.
But "it's not plastic surgery," Bristol told Us Weekly, Instead she had corrective jaw surgery in December so her jaw and teeth could properly realign.

Ricky Gervais has said that he "f**king loved" Barack Obama's jokes about Donald Trump at the recent White House Correspondents Association dinner. The president mocked Trump in a speech given before the attendees with a series of quips, which the Celebrity Apprentice star later described as "inappropriate". Writing on his blog, Gervais praised Obama's jibes, saying: "I f**king loved Obama's beautiful destruction of Trump. I've been invited to this event (more)...

On Saturday Night, C-Span, a channel Seth Meyer's claims is best known for "wide angles of empty chairs", aired the annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner. The dinner is the annual gathering of the Hollywood and Washington elites, where Congressmen can rub elbows with celebrities and comedians. This year, Saturday Night Live writer and star Seth Meyers addressed the gathered crowd for a roasting of, well, pretty much everyone. While his zingers hit everyone from the Hilton Hotel to Arianna Huffington to Vice President Joe Biden, his most notable target was Donald Trump, the billionaire-turned-birther who may be running for president. Mr. Trump -- who was in the room -- held a stony visage as Meyers talked about "the fox" that appears on his head, his Otb accent, and his relationship with "the Blacks."
In light of the recent news, one joke made by Meyers was particularly prescient. As Meyers explained,...

• On April 30, Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers will host the White House Correspondents Association dinner, which was hosted by Jay Leno last year. In a related story, whoever wrote The Washington Post’s headline about the announcement clearly doesn’t watch much SNL. (Really? I mean, really?)
