The fact that we received a prequel to the 2009 thriller Orphan in 2022 was mind-boggling – especially since the surprisingly entertaining Orphan: First Kill still starred Isabelle Fuhrman as Leena Klammer / Esther, an adult serial killer from Estonia who is able to pass herself off as a 9 year old kid. Looking 9 was easy for Fuhrman when she made the first movie, because she was a child at the time… but now she’s an adult, and the filmmakers had to try to figure out how to make her look like a kid again for the prequel. It worked well enough, and the movie went over well enough with viewers (you can read our review Here), that Orphan: First Kill director William Brent Bell is now developing Orphan 3!

Alice is glued to her phone to ensure she doesn’t miss a call or text. She wakes up super early to apply make-up and style her hair to Simon’s preference. Thirteen years after playing serial killer Leena Klammer (a.k.a. Esther) in the horror thriller Orphan, Isabelle Fuhrman has reprised the role in the prequel Orphan: First Kill (read our review Here) – which was released through the Paramount+ streaming service last Friday. Orphan: First Kill was also given a 498 screen theatrical release in the United States, and earned 1,675,000 over the weekend – a decent haul for that number of screens. So there was clearly an interest in seeing Fuhrman play Esther again. And during an interview with Variety, Fuhrman confirmed that she would be willing to come back for an Orphan 3 if it gets made.
Leena Klammer / Esther is an adult who was able to pass herself off as a 9 year old kid in the first Orphan. Looking 9 was easy for Fuhrman at the time because she was a child when she made that movie… but some trickery had to...

What can you do when your homeland’s falling apart? The easy answer is stay or leave, but both options carry too much complexity to simply choose and be done. For starters, not everyone has that choice—whether due to finances, family, or myriad other reasons. And those who are able must dig deep within themselves to rationalize why. Do you leave because of greater opportunity? Do you stay because you want to be part of the solution? Or do you find yourself in a sort of purgatory—one foot planted on each side, only to discover your fear of losing out on the benefits of one for the potential of the other has you locked in stasis?...

Well, I was not expecting this: Orphan: First Kill, a prequel to 2009’s horror mystery Orphan, is better than its progenitor. No, scratch that: First Kill is, rather, not quite as bad as the previous movie. Still, this is a rare cinematic occurrence, and one to be commended, no matter how qualified.
The thing about the 2009 movie is that it played like a parody of horror movies, and, alas, not a knowing one. It had little beyond overbaked tropes of the genre: the “scary” music, the “menacing” camera angles, the telegraphing of every boo. Its big twist — look away now if you don’t want a 13-year-old movie spoiled — is that its central “sinister child,” the orphan of the title, is not, in fact, nine years old but actually an adult with a pituitary disorder that leaves her perpetually childlike in body. Though not childlike in mind: she’s cunning and devious,...

Plot: A homicidal woman attempts to pass herself off as a family’s long-lost daughter. Disaster and bloodshed ensues.
Review: Thirteen years ago, the horror thriller Orphan introduced us to Esther, a 9-year-old girl who is adopted by a family… and then turns out to be thirty-something serial killer Leena Klammer, who is able to pass herself off as a child because she has a hormonal disorder called hypopituitarism. It was a terrific twist that allowed a film that looked like another take on The Bad Seed to become something else entirely. Esther/Leena was played by Isabelle Fuhrman, who was around 10 or 11 when she was on set, making it easy for her to pass as a 9-year-old herself. Now Fuhrman is an adult, but that hasn’t stopped her from reprising the role of Esther in the prequel Orphan: First Kill.
“How can Fuhrman possibly look like a 9-year-old again?...

The small but effective subgenre of “adoption horror” has a certain formula it follows. The newly adopted gradually dismantles the family unit, whether that means manipulating the systems around them or simply taking matters into their own little hands. Then, once someone gets wise to the evildoing, they either stop the young threat or they die trying. As entertaining as these kinds of movies are, they tread a well-worn path. Orphan upholds many of the same conventions as its ilk, however this 2009 movie also brings something new and exciting to the kids’ table.

The final act of 2009’s Orphan revealed a shocking twist; the adopted 9-year-old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) wasn’t a child but a murderous 33-year-old with hypopituitarism. Over a decade later, Esther returns to slay again. Instead of an older, wiser Esther, Orphan: First Kill rewinds the clock to follow the exploits of the childlike killer’s first adoptive family. The now adult Fuhrman reprising her role is the first overt clue that this prequel intends to fully embrace the over-the-top ‘90s thriller vibe its predecessor started, camp and all.
First Kill reacquaints us with Esther with a reminder of her homicidal tendencies. An extended opening sequence at an Estonian psychiatric facility demonstrates how deceptive and lethal Esther can be as she sets a plan to escape in motion. Esther then assumes the identity of a wealthy American family’s long-lost daughter. Impersonating the missing child proves a highly daunting...

Screenwriters Alex Mace and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick gave their character Leena Klammer, aka Esther Albright, a complete back story at the end of Jaume Collet-Serra’s Orphan. A victim of a rare hormone disorder known as hypopituitarism, causing proportional dwarfism, had made it so this 33-year-old woman looked as though she were only nine. The condition obviously prevented her from being seen as a mature adult; thus she used it to her manipulative advantage. What began as thieving, however, eventually escalated to murder once her desire to sleep with her adopted “fathers” reinforced that finding love, while unquestionably difficult, proved impossible when her targets initially believed themselves to be her dad. At least seven people were left dead in her wake alongside their homes’ charred remains.

Over a decade later and “The Orphan” has been adopted for a prequel.
The 2009 horror film starred Isabelle Fuhrman as the titular sociopathic orphan Leena, who set out to torture a family and seduce her adoptive father after escaping an orphanage. While everyone thought Leena was nine years old, it turned out she was secretly a 33-year-old woman with a medical condition that made her look like a child. And yes, the movie is as amazing as it sounds.
Now, Leena finally gets her origin story thanks to the upcoming prequel film “Orphan: First Kill.” It’s directed by William Brent Bell (“The Boy”) from a script by David Coggeshall. The film hits theaters, digital, and streaming on Paramount+ on August 19.

Paramount has released the first trailer for “Orphan: First Kill,” the long awaited follow-up to the cult-classic horror original. The movie will release in theaters and stream on Paramount+ starting August 19.
Released in 2009, the original “Orphan” starred Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, a 9-year-old Russian girl adopted by the Coleman family (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) after their third child is stillborn. Esther begins to demonstrate bizarre adult-like and violent behavior, putting her at odds with her adopted mother. In a famous twist ending, the first film revealed that Esther is actually a 33-year-old woman with a hormonal disorder that causes her to look like a child, who has spent her life posing as a little girl and killing the families that adopt her.

Looks like something is still wrong with Esther.
Isabelle Fuhrman, who broke out in Hollywood as the lead of the disturbing 2009 hit “Orphan,” will reprise her role in an upcoming prequel to the film.
Fuhrman played Esther, an Eastern European child adopted by parents (played by Peter Sarsgaard and Vera Farmiga) overcoming an unspeakable loss of their own. It earned $80 million worldwide on a reported $20 million budget.
While the movie received mixed reviews, it was largely credited with delivering a twist that broke new ground in the sub-genre of disturbed little kids — Esther was not a child at all, but an adult woman with primordial dwarfism masquerading as a nine-year-old. This made her attempts to split up her parents and eliminate her siblings all the more sinister and unforgettable.
While the prequel’s plot is under wraps, Fuhrman will return as star and associate producer on the project. William Brent Bell...
