Hook may have been a box office hit, earning more than $300 million worldwide, but the film’s critics were not very kind to it. And one of Hook’s biggest critics over the years has been Steven Spielberg. That’s a bit surprising, considering he was the film’s director. But he’s never thought it was one of his best works, and even though the movie wound up being nominated for five Oscars in technical categories, he’s looked at it as being one of his biggest disappointments. Even at the time of Hook‘s release, Spielberg admitted that he felt like he was overwhelmed during the shoot. (Click on the media bar below to hear Steven Spielberg) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Steven_Pielberg_Hook_.mp3 Hook is currently streaming on Netflix and available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

This week a new version of “Peter Pan,” inspired by both the 1953 Disney film and the original works by J.M. Barrie, splashes on Disney+. And it was enough to make us think about the many, many times the story has been brought to life (and where this new live-action film ranks among them). With that in mind we decided to list five great versions of the “Peter Pan” story – and where to stream them. Make sure you’ve got your pixie dust and remember that to get to Never Land, it’s the second star on the right and straight on until morning.
Also, two runners-up we wanted to address: the 1924 silent film version from Paramount Pictures (with Betty Bronson as Pan and Scottish character actor Ernest Torrence as Hook), which is often cited in the same breath as the Disney version as being the most influential; and Joel Schumacher...

Make no mistake, "Peter Pan and Wendy" director David Lowery definitely has an affinity for the horror genre, but he wanted to make sure that the new Disney+ children adventure wasn't as dark as it looked at first glance. Lowery's melancholy supernatural drama "A Ghost Story" starring Casey Affleck wearing a bed sheet is hauntingly beautiful, and his take on the 14th-century Arthurian adventure "The Green Knight" is steeped in some fairly gruesome imagery. The entire tale does center around a beheading, after all.
Of course, the latest adaptation of the classic children's story, starring Jude Law as Captain Hook and Alexander Molony as Peter Pan, is still a fairly lighthearted adventure. But that doesn't mean that Lowery didn't leave a few, shall we say, revolting details in the background for eagle-eyed viewers to catch. "Peter Pan and Wendy" comes out today, so be sure to check out the...

Jude Law had a trick up his sleeve to get along with child actors.
The actor played the fearsome Captain Hook in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Peter Pan and Wendy”, a role which saw him acting alongside the cast of children.
In order to maintain the air of intimidation, he was apparently instructed by director David Lowery to never break character in front of them.

Disney continues its streak of live-action adaptations of its most popular animated characters with Peter Pan and Wendy. We have already got Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, The Lion King, Maleficent and many more. Some of them were hits, and some of them weren’t. With more on their release slate and even more in development, it seems that it will do Disney good if they slow down. Pinocchio was a failure. Aladdin and Mulan were also harsh setbacks. Considering that these are all beloved characters that we would love to see on the big screen, Disney needs to be more careful before doing so and not spoil it for us. Peter Pan and Wendy is another not-so-convincing live-action take on the popular children’s character. Other than Jude Law’s rendition of Captain Hook, which is brilliant, the other characters fail to make an impression, especially Alexander Molony’s Peter Pan.

Jude Law revealed that he stayed in character as Captain Hook for the duration of shooting the upcoming film, Peter Pan and Wendy, acting “really scary and mean” even towards the child actors on set. But, he made it up to them in the end by finally breaking character and driving an ice cream van onto set for everyone to enjoy.
“It sounds kinda awful,” Law laughed, sitting in the guest seat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Thursday night. He explained: “David Lowery, our wonderful director, had the idea of trying [to have the children] not see me when I wasn’t Hook, so I just stayed Hook the whole time… I didn’t want to be talking to a little 6-year-old [as] Jude, and then suddenly be like, ‘Right, you hate me, I’m Hook.’ So, instead, I just stuck as Hook.”

The latest episode of “Blindspotting” gave millennial fans something they never thought they’d get to see: Dante Basco essentially reprising the role of Rufio, leader of the Lost Boys in Steven Spielberg’s “Hook” — even if it was at a Halloween party.
The installment, titled “By Hook or by Crook,” followed as Jacque (April Absynth) invited her new beau Cuddie (Lance Holloway) to her family’s home in Daly City for a Halloween party. After being incorrectly advised by Trish (Jaylen Barron) into wearing a pirate costume to the event, Jacque freaks out upon arrival and reveals to Cuddie that her father is Dante Basco.
Given the actor’s history with pirates, Cuddie’s costume is understandably barred from the event. Though they try to hide it for a while, Basco eventually discovers the truth; leading to a “Hook”-esque sword fight between the men in Jacque’s life.

This post contains spoilers for "Peter Pan & Wendy."
As most children, and people who were once children, know, the cornerstone of the world of Peter Pan lies in his connection to Neverland. And though that world can be a beautiful place, there are some villains within it too — namely Peter's infamous rival, Captain Hook. In David Lowery's new Disney live-action adaptation, "Peter Pan & Wendy," viewers get the full story on what ultimately led to their feud, something that audiences don't see in the original 1953 film.
In the original film, all the audience is told is that the two characters are enemies, but we're not given any other backstory. Interestingly enough, it turns out these two are actually, more than anything, frenemies in Lowery's adaptation. Allow me to explain.
The new movie takes us back to Hook's childhood days, when he lived in Neverland as a boy named James.

As a retelling of both J.M. Barrie’s novel and Disney’s 1953 animated classic, Disney+‘s Peter Pan & Wendy is a mixed bag. But as a retelling via director David Lowery, it’s totally on-brand.
The first half-hour of the 106-minute movie (streaming now on Disney+) suggests a beat-for-beat retread (à la Jon Favreau’s The Lion King), but Lowery’s quirky preferences permit a more offbeat take. And once Peter, Wendy et al reach Neverland, the story takes on new life.

As written by J. M. Barrie in his original 1904 play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” the century-old name Peter Pan has always been synonymous with a severe case of arrested development. More expressly, the fear of adulthood, the immature reluctance towards embracing the responsibilities and pains of being a grown-up, unable to gauge the earned rewards of such hardships.
So what could a 21st-century version of such arrested development look like? One that has something to say to today’s grown-ups both mesmerized and puzzled by a fiery younger generation vastly different than them, and today’s kids, being raised by an unprecedented sense of individuality? With “Peter Pan & Wendy,” soulful auteur David Lowery tries to find an answer with mixed results that’s fascinating and refreshing in parts and somewhat wearisome on the whole.

Based on Scottish novelist J.M. Barrie’s 1904 play, subsequent self-penned 1911 novelization, and Disney’s classic 1953 animated film, Peter Pan & Wendy finds indie-auteur David Lowery confidently back in big-studio mode. Lowery delivers an exquisitely balanced mix of visual spectacle and grounded, intimate moments, Buttressed by uniformly strong, naturalistic performances from a talented cast, Peter Pan & Wendy should be considered a worthy, worthwhile addition to any streaming diet, especially family-oriented ones. Like practically every iteration with the exception of Steven Spielberg’s justly maligned reimagining (Hook), Peter Pan & Wendy centers on the title characters, Peter Pan (Alexander Molony), the boy who refused to grow up, and Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson), a teen facing major changes who,...

It looks like kids’ movies are dominating the box office right now. Mind you, what looks to be the first billion-dollar blockbuster is based on a decades-old video game. But what about the classic fairy tales, you may ask? Not to worry, although it’s fairly young at a spry 121 years, as opposed to the centuries-old Grimm Brothers stories and assorted myths and legends. And it’s also the 70th anniversary of the definitive animated adaptation from the master artists at the “mouse house”. Ugh, you may be thinking, not another live-action retread of a superb cartoon ala the recent Pinocchio (not the Oscar-winner) or the dreary Dumbo. Well, you’re not really correct as this tale began (after its literary roots) on the stage and has been played by flesh-and-blood actors in versions going back to the silent movie days. And so, here’s another version, this time sharing...

There is something fitting about the fact that a charming adventure story about a boy that never grows up who leads a cadre of children wishing to remain similarly youthful and carefree forever gets remade in one form or another every decade or so. It speaks to the fact that the desire to avoid adulthood and remain unmoored and childlike forever remains as strong as ever, if not stronger. At the same time, it reveals our seeming inability to understand fully why the story is so resonant. Every time the story is told, you can feel the creator struggling with the material, wrestling with its meaning, imparting in the story their own beliefs and fears.
Director David Lowery, who has spent the last decade building an aesthetically and thematically similar but tonally diverse oeuvre, is a perfect modern match for this material. His works have explored heartache and loneliness and...

With “Peter Pan and Wendy,” Disney sets out to bring the boy who refused to grow up into the 21st century — not literally, like those taxing live-action/cartoon hybrids, where computer-generated Smurfs get loose in Manhattan or Tom and Jerry wreak havoc in a high-end hotel. The studio’s latest remake is still set in Edwardian England, the way both J.M. Barrie’s play and the animated feature it inspired were. But the sensibility is very much of the moment, as director David Lowery (who did an admirable job of updating “Pete’s Dragon” for Disney) refreshes the 1953 classic according to contemporary priorities.

Peter Pan & Wendy, David Lowery’s humanizing interpretation of J.M. Barrie’s existential classic about the boy who refuses to grow up, speaks more to the inner child of jaded adults than it does to actual kids. This version of the fairytale grounds the fundamental wistfulness of the original tale with empathetic backstories and takes care to remedy the original’s overt racism and latent sexism.
Despite criticisms lodged at Lowery (The Green Knight) in the months leading up to this film’s release on Disney+, Peter Pan & Wendy keeps much intact. Lowery and his co-writer Toby Halbrooks have a firm grasp on the enduring qualities of Barrie’s story, which, as they correctly suggest throughout the film, has nothing to do with whether or not the gang of Lost Boys includes girls. The question you may be asking is ‘do we really need yet another take on Peter Pan? Ever since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911 there have been countless film, TV, and stage versions of one stripe or another, starting with silents, and of course NBC’s live musical in the 50’s with Mary Martin, and later versions with Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, and just a few years ago another NBC live attempt at it with Allison Williams. Of course there have been big screen spins, neither quite magical, like Joe Wright’s messy 2015 Pan and Spielberg’s overblown Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. Up to this moment even Broadway has a new Tony contender in the farcical take, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. But for me the one version that resonates the most, to this day, is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.

In the summer of 2016, writer/director David Lowery pulled off what feels like a magic trick in retrospect: he made a Disney remake that was actually quite good. His take on "Pete's Dragon" may not have set the box office aflame, but his tender approach to a story about an orphaned boy in the forest with only a mammoth dragon for a friend resulted in a low-stakes but wonderful family adventure. Of course, the major reason why "Pete's Dragon" worked so well as a remake is that it eschewed almost everything aside from the aforementioned logline that's present in the 1977 original, from big musical numbers to con-artist bad guys. And "Pete's Dragon" was able to eschew those aspects because while the original has some fans, it's by no means one of Disney's biggest titles.

Adapting well-known and much-beloved animated features and making them look and feel refreshed for a whole new generation is a tall order. Many have attempted it, but only a handful have truly understood how to do it properly.

For those that only know director David Lowery from his mystical Arthurian epic "The Green Knight" starring Dev Patel, it may seem a little strange to see his name attached to another retelling of the classic animated film "Peter Pan." But before the visionary filmmaker made the subdued haunter "A Ghost Story" and Robert Redford's "The Old Man and the Gun," Lowery also remade the 1977 children's fantasy musical "Pete's Dragon" for Disney. Returning to the House of Mouse, Lowery is all aboard for a new take on Neverland with "Peter Pan & Wendy" starring Jude Law in a great bit of casting as Captain Hook.
Peter Pan is so ingrained in pop culture that it can be a challenge to know what parts of the story to include and what aspects to avoid for fear of retelling the same version that audiences already know. To avoid those pitfalls, Lowery...

Summer movie season is upon us and with it, the biggest movies of the year are about to compete for your hard-earned money. Will you go see the latest superhero movie? The latest installment in a big franchise like "Fast and Furious" or "Mission: Impossible?" Or perhaps you're more excited about Pixar finally making a return to theaters with a wholly original movie like their ambitious romantic comedy "Elemental."
Granted, not everyone is comfortable going to theaters while there's still a global pandemic, but the world of streaming is not being left behind; there are just as many big shows and movies available at the click of a button as there are movies in theaters. Netflix is entering the month of May prepared, following the release of the second season hit "Sweet Tooth," and right before the return of "The Witcher." Nevertheless, they are betting big on comedy this month,...

For Jude Law, getting to play Captain Hook has been a long time coming — and has a special significance for the Oscar-nominated star.
Law walked the carpet at the premiere of his new film, “Peter Pan & Wendy”, at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City on Tuesday, and he spoke with Et about why playing Hook will have a unique meaning for his eldest son, 26-year-old Rafferty Law.
“I used to play as Hook opposite my son my eldest son, when he was a little boy,” Law recalled fondly. “So we’d kind of already been there together. And for him, it’ll be a really, really special experience, I think, seeing me actually as Hook.”
Law said that, in general, when it comes to choosing parts, “I tend to do the parts for myself, and what I find interesting.”

Time and time again, “Superman & Lois” managed to tug at our heartstrings by evoking contrasting feelings – building up wholesome moments followed by emotionally devastating ones—and the fifth episode of this season, titled “Head On,” holds testament to that. In the previous episode, we saw Lois and Clark handling the situation of Candice’s abusive, jailbird-like father, Emmit Pergande, and Lois offers for Candice to stay in the Kent household until she finds a place of her own. Bruno Mannheim threatened John Henry Irons with the prime Earth’s version of his sister and her family’s lives, and Lois decides to get admitted into the Hob’s Bay medical facility, funded by Bruno, in order to simultaneously continue her cancer treatment and do investigative work about the kingpin’s illegal metahuman experiments. This episode ventures further into Bruno’s nefarious schemes as well as highlights the plight of the...

As kids and adults alike, millions of people dream of becoming movie stars. For some actors who make it, though, success on the big screen isn’t everything it’s built up to be. And while most still choose to stay, some stars leave Hollywood to pursue other careers. One such example is Charlie Korsmo, who played the son of Robin Williams’ character in Hook.
Korsmo’s face may be familiar to those who grew up in the 90s. The child star also appeared in movies like Dick Tracy. However, the actor’s career in Hollywood was short-lived, retiring from acting at a young age. Instead, Korsmo pursued a career in academia and is now a successful law professor.
Charlie Korsmo was a child actor, known for playing the son of Robin Williams’ character in ‘Hook’ Actors Dante Basco and Robin Williams on the set of the film Hook, directed by Steven Spielberg.

David Lowery is a square peg who refuses to let Hollywood fit him into a round hole.
In the 10 years since the filmmaker broke out with "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" (the 2013 romantic crime drama that /Film's review describes as "Cormac McCarthy by way of 'The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford'"), Lowery has gone from helming acclaimed high art indie dramas to earnest Disney films and dream-like fantasy epics. His latest offering, "Peter Pan and Wendy," marks yet another hard pivot for Lowery, bringing him back into the world of live-action Disney remakes -- sorry, re-imaginings, as the House of Mouse insists on calling them -- for a new take on J.M. Barrie's fairy tale that looks to bring something genuinely fresh to the oft-told story, which would be quite the accomplishment in and of itself.

ABC’s Once Upon a Time is going to hell — or a facsimile thereof, when Season 5B premieres Sunday at 8/7c.
When last we tuned in prior to the series’ long winter nap, Emma (seemingly!) transferred all of the Darkness from her and to Hook and then slayed him, (seemingly!) ridding the world of the Darkness forever. Emma, though, is determined to rescue her love from the dire fate that his selfless sacrifice dealt him, by traveling to the Underworld to split and share her heart.

Stevie Wonder: Songs in the Key of Life Madison Square Garden November 6, 2014 I wasn't going to miss this one! Fortunately the cheap seats were "only" $49.50 (plus fees, of course), which for a big-ticket concert these days is actually reasonable.
Wonder's 1976 double-lp set is on one hand an oddball choice for such treatment, yet from another perspective is perfectly obvious. Oddball because although it does have hits, the hits/filler percentages are higher on the latter than on any of his classic '70s single LPs, and some of it is downright eccentric. Perfect and obvious because, among musicheads, this set has acquired mythic status and, given its length, handily fills an evening.
The thing is, who says what's definitely filler (undistinguished material that just takes up space) and what's a hidden gem? And there's so much variety, stylistically and in terms of arrangements, that some people think it doesn't flow,...

If there’s one thing we’re sure of, it’s that Justin and Selena are meant to be. Sure, they’ve had their ups and downs, but Justin’s new song ‘All That Matters’ has come out, along with his description that proves it’s basically a love letter to him.
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have gone through good times and bad, but it’s really time he drops everything to prove that he’s the one for her — he already started by revealing his emotion behind his new song, “All That Matters.”
Justin Bieber & Selena Gomez Are Soul Mates
Justin’s new song is completely about Selena — we could tell that purely by the lyrics. “You’re all that matters to me // ain’t worry about nobody else, If I ain’t with you, I’m with myself // You make me complete, you’re all that matters to me.

Season six of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ started with a bang — literally. The controversial ending to the Sept. 9 season premiere caused an uproar of fans who were not happy with that ending. However, I’m on the other end of the spectrum.
Just when you thought Sons of Anarchy couldn’t get anymore shocking, season six’s premiere proved us all wrong. While some loved the new episode, “Straw,” others felt it pushed the limit. However, if you’ve watched Sons from the beginning, you know there wasn’t much of a limit left.
‘Sons of Anarchy’ School Shooting: Why It’s Not Pushing The Envelope
The dramatic season premiere ended when an 11-year-old, who was introduced earlier in the episode pulled out a machine gun, entered his middle school and started firing shots.

The masterminds behind Storybrooke reveal five major spoilers, including Hook and Swan’s potential voyage aboard the love boat.
With most of Once Upon A Time‘s core characters shuffling off to Neverland at the end of season two, it’s anyone’s guess what we can expect to see in season three. Thankfully, executive producers Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis were generous with scoop June 8 during the Once panel at the Atx Television Festival.
1. ‘Captain Swan’ Might Become A Thing
Oncers have shipped Emma (Jennifer Morrison) with Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) since the pair first shared a scene, and now that Ms. Swan’s baby daddy is out of the picture — albeit temporarily — there might finally be romance in the cards:

Even true hearts can lose and they did this week, over and over again.
"The Queen is Dead" featured Snow White struggling with loss after loss until her belief in doing the right thing was strained to its limits.
In fairy tale past, a bratty little Snow White paraded around in her pink princess dress and berated servant Johanna for trying on her precious crown. It was satisfying to see her mother put the entitled little girl in her place.
Apparently, the lesson stuck as Snow has gone out of her way to do good, even when in the end doing so has hurt her and those she's cared about.
But Cora may have taken her evil vendetta a step too far. In one day Snow found out that Cora had murdered her mother, tricked her by pretending to be a fairy and manipulated events to make sure that Regina would one day be Queen.

Review Kylie Peters Feb 18, 2013
The identity of Henry's father is revealed in this week's flashback-filled Once Upon A Time. Here's Kylie's review of Manhattan...
This review contains spoilers.
2.14 Manhattan
It’s family drama night on Once Upon a Time, and everyone’s invited to join in some good old-fashioned sturm und drang. Emotions are high and sparks are flying, but Manhattan manages to skim just above daytime-tv levels of angst, and the result is a riveting episode that delivers several long-awaited moments in the series.
There’s been plenty of buildup to these events, and that is probably why OUaT can get away with so much drama all in one go. Thankfully, there are no awful cliffhangers. Early in the episode, Emma catches Baelfire and learns that he is Neal, her ex-boyfriend and father of Henry. Many fans predicted this, and the Once writers acknowledge this by not trying to force shock value on us.

Once Upon A Time, Season 2, Episode 14: “Manhattan”
Written by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz
Directed by Dean White
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on ABC
Drama has come, in the form of Once Upon a Time that is. This week’s episode kicked off with an exciting chase throughout the streets and ending with some jaw-dropping, earth shattering revelations. Including the biggest one of them all, we have found Emma’s baby daddy, and it just so happens that he is Rumplestiltskin’s long lost son. And with that Once Upon a Time has strapped us into the seats, checked the buckles and shot us off into another whirlwind episode.
The episode, while full of secrets and backstory, was more on the dramatic side this week instead of chalked full of action, suspense and intensity. We found that the storyline mostly dealt with Rumplestiltskin, Emma, Henry and Bae, with occasional...

Then I'll just have to kill him.
Those were the words left echoing in our heads at the end of "Manhattan," but will Rumplestiltskin stick to that plan or will new revelations change everyone's fate?
When Rumple bashed his own leg, he believed he was doing it so he could be there for his own son. Word of advice: never trust a seer.
He couldn't wait to get home to his son, only to have his wife turn on him. Instead of being thrilled that the father of her child had made it back to them alive, she lamented the rumors that had travelled from the war zone. She would have preferred a dead hero to a live coward. So much for love.
In New York, Rumple tracked his son with Emma's help and Henry in tow. I couldn't have been happier to see Emma using her tracking skills to pick the right apartment.

1.) We kick things off with a bunch of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire casting news as Lionsgate has sent out a press release formally announcing the casting of Amanda Plummer (Pulp Fiction) as Wiress. She's an oddball character whose eccentricities earn her the nickname "Nuts" from fellow tributes. In addition, it appears two other actors are nearing deals for sought-after roles in the sequel. Sam Claflin (Snow White and the Huntsman) is in talks to play Finnick Odair, who was one of the youngest Hunger Games winners at age 14 and Tony Shalhoub ("Monk") is the frontrunner to play Beetee, an inventor with a knack for using electricity as a weapon. [Variety] 2.) Meanwhile, Gary Ross might have found his post-Hunger Games vehicle in Disney's Peter Pan prequel Peter and the Starcatchers. The source material is a 2004 children's novel that was also turned into an off-Broadway play that won five Tonys. It...
