Exclusive: Sci-fi giant Ursula K. Le Guin’s acclaimed novelette Nine Lives is being reworked as a feature by UK producers Gavin Humphries (Pin Cushion) of Quark Films and former Sony Pictures International producer Josephine Rose.
Tom Basden, BAFTA-nominated for Netflix series Fresh Meat and a regular actor and writer on ITV2 comedy Plebs (recently picked up for remake by Seth Rogen), is co-scripting the adaptation with Nfts alum Siri Rodnes, who will also direct. The team is in discussions with cast.
Set on a moon-base for off-world drilling, the darkly comedic Nine Lives follows two jaded workers whose excitement at the prospect of incoming human company is dashed when they are instead sent ten clones. The story’s themes of cloning, individualism and the importance of social connection hit home when the story was published by Playboy in 1968 and still resonate today.

Besides bringing a great selection of films to Afm including Supremacy, The Last 5 Years, Rob the Mob, Ron Howard's Made in America, and Swelter, The Exchange will also debut sales for their film Accident, an interesting 3D film and Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story.
Accident
Directed by Dan Tondowski, Accident is a 3D thrill ride based on a true story and it includes incredible new SFX effects by Simon Hansen who previously worked on Chronicle, and will be produced by Ryan Haidarian (Vehicle 19) and Guillaume Benski (2009 Cannes Director's Fortnight's Navidad). Thomas Mann (Project X) and Ashley Hinshaw (Chronicle) will star in Accident. The other leads of the film will be announced shortly
The film follows four teenagers who "borrow" a car for one night of fun and thrills. But what starts as a wild joy ride turns into a nightmare. After a violent crash, they discover that being stuck at the bottom of a ravine in an overturned car is the least of their problems. The psychotic owner of the car that they stole has them in his cross-hairs and he will stop at nothing to get back the car and its valuable contents.
"We are extremely excited to be involved with Accident and this very talented team. The demand for high concept, 3D action thrillers that are unique and marketable is very high. We feel that this film could be a real breakout success for our buyers and we are excited to bring it to market," said O'Shea.
Midnight Rider: The Gregg Allman Story
Based on the New York Times bestselling autobiography of the iconic blues singer, the screenplay was written by Unclaimed Freight Production's Randall Miller and Jody Savin, and will be directed by Miller himself.
The film focuses on Allman's early struggles through the formation of The Allman Brothers Band and the group's ultimate explosion on the music scene. On the heels of successful music biopics such as Ray and Walk the Line comes Gregg Allman's Midnight Rider, a searing and revealing look inside the man who was at the forefront of Rock 'n' Roll and the lead singer of one of the biggest American bands of all time. The film captures two of the most defining chapters of Gregg's life, when The Allman Brothers Band was just getting under way and the earlier years when Gregg, after years of drugs and alcohol abuse, cleans himself up. Chronicling his life on the road and the pitfalls of super stardom, Midnight Rider ultimately creates an uplifting tale of a rock icon as he finds his way through the darkness into the light .
In order to infuse the film with authenticity, both Savin and Miller are working closely with Allman and his manager, Michael Lehman, both of whom will serve as executive producers. The film will include original Allman Brothers tracks as well as performances by the actor/musicians. Open Road will theatrically release the film in the Us.
"This powerful story of one man's journey through his brilliant and tumultuous rock 'n' roll career is extremely compelling and will be of keen interest to our international buyers," said O'Shea

I don’t’ share the popular opinion that 2012 has been a terrible year in film. It hasn’t been as strong as previous years but 2012 gave us such gems as Holy Motors, The Master, Berberian Sound Studio, Tabu, Skyfall and Moonrise Kingdom, to name a few. As with every year, I thought it appropriate to highlight some of the year’s most memorable individual moments, scenes, and sequences, from movies that may or may not have made our individual year-end lists. Which is no small feat considering just how insane the release calendar has become.
We are keeping out credit sequences since we feel it is an art form in itself.
Honourable Mentions:
The Deep Blue Sea – The underground flashback.
Oslo, August 31st – The cafe scene.
Miss Bala – The extended take during the shoot out .
Universal Solider 4 – The opening shotgun sequence.
Universal Solider 4 – The fight in the sport retail store.

A Separation – Opening scene
A Separation opens with a simple but wonderful stationary shot that quickly sets everything up. The scene features a couple speaking to a divorce councilor about their troubled relationship. In practically breaking the fourth wall the sequence prepares us for the mess of selfish bad decisions wrapped around good indentations that follows; these choices eventually leading to the cause for everything spiraling out of control.

There are various ways in which the found footage genre uses the camera to tell the story. Some let the camera do all the work while others provide interviews, commentary, and other narrative features. The former consists of films like Blair Witch Project and the latter includes Cannibal Holocaust. Judging by box office numbers, those who follow the Blair Witch path turn into money making machines while the others find trouble ensuring a theatrical release. The sub-genre continues to grow with both critically acclaimed and box office hits. Usually, but not always, found-footage films are a sub-section of the horror genre, and so last October I posted a list of my favourite found footage horror films. But with the release of Chronicle this weekend, I’ve decided to put together a list of some of my other personal favourites. These films range from Sci-Fi monster movies to French art-house crime flicks,...

Chronicle gives the “realistic” superhero movie a +1 level up from Unbreakable, giving us a step closer to believing “what it would look like if superheroes existed in our world,” but it also a hybrid of a few other types of films. It takes the “found footage” concept film past what we were introduced to in The Blair Witch Project, and expanded to in Cloverfield (with a much steadier camera hand), and combines it with an autobiographical documentary like Jonathan Caouette’s Tarnation.
Over 90% of the “footage” belongs to Andrew (Dane DeHaan, In Treatment) the high school social pariah who buys a high-end (and large) video camera to record his adolescent years, good experiences or bad. We’re not given a reason why he chooses to document his life in this manner. Maybe he hopes to capture the varied high school experience, or his own coming of age; what he gets...

How did the film do so much with so little? Simon Hansen tells MTV News.

This weekend, the teenage superheroes of "Chronicle" edged out Harry Potter himself at the box office with their amazing abilities. Made on a relatively tight budget of $12 million, the found-footage superhero movie made almost twice its budget back in domestic ticket sales alone.
Part of the reason for the success, no doubt, was due to the work of visual-effects supervisor Simon Hansen and his team in South Africa. They created all the usual sights of a superhero flick but with a fraction of the budget.
MTV News spoke with Hansen to find out how he did so much with so little. (There are minor spoilers ahead.)

Chronicle
Directed by Josh Trank
Screenplay by Max Landis
2012, UK / USA
Director Josh Trank and screenwriter Max Landis (son of filmmaker John Landis), put a fresh, invigorating spin on the superhero origin story, with Chronicle, a movie so sleek and incredibly ultra-portable, it suggests better things to come from the duo. The two display enough raw talent and ingenuity in their feature debut that this jolt to the found-footage genre transcends its gimmicks with a clever script, fast-paced direction, and engaging performances from its young cast. In many ways less a superhero movie than a coming-of-age story, Chronicle manages to outdo other mega-budget comic book spectacles by deconstructing the conventional superhero narrative and reassembling it as an artful dialogue on the troubled teen psyche.
Chronicle is familiar, and yet unique, in the way it treats the so-called origin story. Trank and Landis imagine what ordinary kids might do when coming...

Way before we all came to know and love Sharlto Copley as Wikus in District 9, he was actually working on a budding career as a director. Back in 2006, Copley co-directed a feature with production partner Simon Hansen, a thriller starring Rutger Hauer and Darren Boyd ("Personal Affairs") called Spoon. And after many years of waiting, an early teaser trailer has hit the web, courtesy of Twitch, giving us our very first look at Rutger Hauer as Victor Spoon. It's kind of creepy in a sense, almost in a Cronenberg kind of way, and it's about a guy who blacks out during moments of extreme stress. So uh, just check this out, if you're curious. Watch the teaser trailer for Simon Hansen & Sharlto Copley's Spoon: A thriller with supernatural overtones about a man with a medical condition that causes him to black out during moments of extreme stress,...

South African actor Sharlto Copley came out of nowhere to amaze people with his performance as Wikus Van De Merwe in Neill Blomkamp's District 9 and has since gone on to land the role of Murdock in The A-Team. But did you know that before District 9 he was already hard at work writing and directing a movie of his own? Copley and partner Simon Hansen have been developing a mysterious project called Spoon for a few years now, and it sounds like it will finally be released sometime in the near future. The good folks over at Twitch [1] got their hands on the very first teaser trailer, and although it doesn't show much, the premise is intriguing. Spoon is a supernatural thriller revolving around a man with a strange medical condition who blacks out during periods of extreme stress, causing strange things to happen. It stars TV actor Darren Boyd (Saxondale,...

Prior to his breakout as an actor in District 9, Sharlto Copley was pursuing a career intended to be located behind the camera rather than in front of it. He worked behind the scenes on Alive in Joburg and District 9 (and directed himself as D9's Wikus in a brief comedy piece) and has been working on his directorial debut for some time with co-director and production partner Simon Hansen. Called Spoon, the film is either complete or approaching completion, and there is a short teaser to announce the project to the public. The teaser, via Twitch, is all-too brief, but it is wonderful for focusing on Rutger Hauer, who plays one of the film's two primary characters. Spoon is "a thriller with supernatural overtones about a man with a medical condition that causes him to black out during moments of extreme stress and leads him to make a...

I gotta say, I’m loving the trajectory of Rutger Hauer’s career over the last few years. The aging action star is popping up in all sorts of great films and this could well be another.
South African actor Sharlto Copley (now semi-recognized for his performance in last year’s District 9 (review)) didn’t always want to be a movie star; he actually started his career as a producer with aspirations of directing and here’s his first effort. Spoon stars Hauer as Victor Spoon and Darren Boyd (familiar to me from his appearances in the great Canadian show “ReGenesis” though others may recognize him from his regular appearances on a number of British shows) as Daniel Spoon, a man with a medical condition which causes him to black when under extreme stress. When he sets off to figure out what's happening to him, he makes a "remarkable discovery about himself.

Before he rose to fame as the leading man in District 9 and long before he was cast as Mad Murdock in Joe Carnahan's revival of The A-Team, Sharlto Copley's future plans involved working on the other side of the camera. Along with Simon Hansen - his partner in South Africa's Inspired Minority production house - Copley had his beginnings as a producer and effects geek, with both Hansen and Copley heavily involved behind the scenes in both District 9 and Neill Blomkamp's short film precursor Alive In Joburg. Copley and Hansen are both credited as producers on Joburg and both were heavily involved in the effects as well, with Hansen later given directorial duties on the interview segments of District 9. And while fame and other projects have stretched out the timeline a bit the duo's post-Joburg plans revolved around co-directing a supernatural thriller titled Spoon.

We are pleased to support our country South Africa by offering you a look at "Pumzi," a 20 minute-long science fiction short about futurist Africa, set 35 years after World War III - "The Water War." Simon Hansen, a school friend I've known for over 25 years, produces alongside Hanna Slezacek. Amira Quinlan serves as co-producer. Hansen produced probably the most well-known short to date now in "Alive in Joburg," the short that the remarkably potent "District 9" was based on.

While there's no doubt at all that Neill Blomkamp deserves every scrap of praise that he has received for the fantastic District 9, there is also no doubt that these sorts of creations never happen in a vacuum. There are absolutely always other hands involved. And one pair of those hands belong to Simon Hansen, the visual effects artist who co-produced District 9 precursor Alive In Joburg and is currently wrapping post production on Spoon, a film he co-directed with District 9 star - also an effects whiz - Sharlto Copley.

Who is Simon Hansen and why should you care that he's produced a short film? Well, in 2005 the South African producer and special effects artist had a hand in a little film called Alive In Joburg, which may jog a memory or two. No? Well, Joburg's director was Neil Blomkamp and this is the short that would go on to later be expanded into District 9. And right now Hansen is wrapping up post production on a little feature titled Spoon, a film that stars Rutger Hauer and that Hansen co-directed (and did the effects) with Sharlto Copley - anopther South African effects whiz who took his first headlining acting gig as the lead in the aforementioned District 9. Being from South Africa and born in Johannesburg, I was especially intrigued by “District 9” and felt proud of the achievement as such. I’ve known about this project for quite some time now. With issues about “Halo” not being made, Jackson and Blomkamp decided to go their own route, rather making an indie science fiction action drama which will blow your socks off, I guarantee it. I’ve known Sharlto Copley from a while back when he worked with my school friend Simon Hansen in Cape Town, South Africa. The origins of “District 9” go back to Blomkamp’s short “Alive in Joburg” (for those who don’t know Joburg is Johannesburg). To cut a story short, keep an eye out on Neill Blomkamp. The director is already achieving a massive following from this project and is sure to turn many fans and critics’ heads alike during what will be a very prosperous career.
