The superhero-satire series ‘Gen V’, which is a spin-off on hit streaming series ‘The Boys’, has announced that it will officially be releasing a second season of the series. Filled with blood, gore, and darkly comical satire, the new season has all that people have come to expect from both ‘The Boys’ and ‘Gen V’.

They are so titled because this is a new generation of superhero kids from Godolkin University, a prestigious superhero training school run by the shady and corrupt Vought corporation who manufactures the serum known as Compound V which makes the ‘supes’ super.

The series streams exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
“Expanding the universe of The Boys with a series as bold as Gen V has been an incredible journey for us and our wonderful partners at Sony. From our first conversation with showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, along with Eric Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen, we knew Gen V would push the boundaries. Their unapologetic approach is exactly what audiences love, and it has helped Gen V become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in over 130 countries,” said Vernon Sanders,...

I hope you’re up for accruing more student debt because The Boys spinoff Gen V is getting a second season at Amazon. The renewal arrives ahead of the Season 1 finale, scheduled to air on November 3 on Prime Video. While the Season 2 renewal is unsurprising, it’s welcomed news in the face of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike and a general air of uncertainty circulating throughout the film and television arenas.
“Expanding the universe of ‘The Boys’ with a series as bold as ‘Gen V’ has been an incredible journey for us and our wonderful partners at Sony,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios. “From our first conversation with showrunners Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, along with Eric Kripke, Evan Goldberg, and Seth Rogen, we knew ‘Gen V’ would push the boundaries. There’s another school year ahead for the students at Godolkin University.
Amazon has renewed Gen V, its college-set spinoff of The Boys, for a second season. The news comes about midway through Season 1 as audiences gear up for the November 3 finale. Episode 6, titled “Jumanji,” is set to release on the streamer Friday.
Amazon has yet to release any data about the series’ performance so far. It hasn’t quite been a month since the first three episodes premiered on September 29, meaning that the series wouldn’t have appeared yet on the Nielsen streaming charts. It’s possible that more data will be available in the coming weeks, if the series cracks the streaming Top 10.

Amazon’s The Boys has spent three years playing a game of one-upmanship, initially taking the somewhat fatigued superhero genre out behind the woodshed with layers of corporate satire, increasingly salty and nihilistic language and tidal waves of bodily fluids.
As much as I often enjoy The Boys, once most of the competition was left in the R-rated dust, that one-upmanship frequently became self-directed, and as such, has felt like a bit of a creative dead-end. One exploding character became 15. Liters of fake blood dappling walls escalated to vats of viscera, with some sperm for good measure. The show’s ethos has always been “More, more, more,” but not always “More creative, more creative, more creative.”
With the new spinoff Gen V, The Boys is at least briefly able to take a much-needed reset, bringing in a largely new group of characters, adjusting the satirical targets, and although the new...

Welcome, new students of Godolkin University! The spin-off of Prime Video’s breakout hit, the superhero satire The Boys, will be premiering in a few days. Gen V takes fans into the new generation of supers as they learn the lessons they need to be tried and true superheroes. Amazon has now released an orientation video for God U, the college that will be the setting for the show. The video features the stars of the show mugging it up for the camera as they parody the cheesy acting in the usual presentation for videos of this nature.
The official synopsis for Gen V from Amazon reads,
“Set in the diabolical world of The Boys, Gen V expands the universe to Godolkin University, the prestigious superhero-only college where students train to be the next generation of heroes – preferably with lucrative endorsements. You know what happens when supes go bad, but...

School is in session for a new generation of superpowered individuals in Prime Video’s official Gen V Redband trailer. After the monumental success of Prime Video’s The Boys, a new crop of potential heroes and villains rule the halls of a university designed to shape the alpha and omegas of tomorrow. Still, something isn’t quite right in the Godolkin University halls, and the mystery is claiming lives as it unfolds. Competition to be the best in class is fierce, and only some survive the experience. The halls run red with the blood of lesser classmen, and the race to become a member of the Seven, the world’s premiere superhero team, is as deadly as they come.

There's never a dull moment in The Boys universe, and we're sure Gen V will hold on to that when it finally premieres later this month.
Prime Video went public Wednesday with the full-length trailer, and it's a violent display of superheroes-in-the-making.
Gen V features an electric cast of younger superheroes, each with their own powers, and the footage hints at some powerful team-ups.
But that doesn't mean everyone gets along.
No, this group is pushed together in a way that doesn't sit right with their peers.
We see lots of bad decisions being made, which means the series will show heroes, villains, and those in between.
Set at America's only college exclusively for young adult superheroes (run by Vought International), Gen V explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the school's top ranking.

A new generation of supes is on the rise in the first trailer for “Gen V,” Prime Video’s upcoming spin-off of their subversive hit superhero show “The Boys.”
The series from Amazon’s streamer sets to expand “The Boys'” world of hyper-capitalist superheroes and corrupted mega-corporations by introducing the students of Godolkin University. The superhero-only college, complete with a bronzed Homelander statue, is where the young upstarts train to become the next generation of celebrated (and lucrative) heroes like the Seven.

Changing the setting to a college campus was always going to be hit or miss for The Boys franchise.
Prime Video dropped the teaser trailer for the Gen V on Monday morning, and my first impression is that the series has managed to nail the tone from its predecessor.

Prime Video released the first teaser for “Gen V,” set to premiere exclusively on the streamer with its first three episodes on Sept. 29, followed by weekly episodes through its season finale on Nov. 3.
“The Boys” spin-off series explores the training of the first generation of superheroes who are aware they received their powers by getting injected with Compound V, the substance at the center of much of the flagship show’s tension. The heroes put their physical and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the school’s highly coveted top ranking. Los Angeles, July 21 (Ians) The heavily popular and acclaimed web-series ‘The Boys’ will now be getting its spin-off in the show ‘Gen V’ which just released its teaser.
Putting the bloody and twisted heroism of Homelander aside, ‘Gen V’ will explore the training of the first generation of superheroes to know about Compound V, whose power is artificial rather than God-given.
As they put their physical and moral boundaries to the test, the lead characters will learn that with ambition comes sacrifice, with power comes responsibility, with duty comes emotional conflicts, making them see that the there is a very thin line between right and wrong, and that nothing is black and white as they explore the many shades of grey.
Much like the training for any competitive exam, these young aspiring new bloods will be competing for the school’s highly coveted top ranking as they uncover the university...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Herogasm,” the June 24 episode of “The Boys.”
“The Boys” finally blew its biggest load of wild content this Friday with the release of the Amazon Prime Video superhero series’ long-awaited “Herogasm” installment. In just an hour, showrunner Eric Kripke, episode writer Jessica Chou and director Nelson Cragg went balls to the wall by throwing The Boys and The Supes into the sticky situation of the 70th annual superhero orgy event Herogasm.
It’s an episode of “The Boys” pulled directly out of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book series that the show is based on, and was adapted in as much X-rated glory as Kripke and the team felt they could conceivably put Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mm (Laz Alonso), Annie/Starlight (Erin Moriarty), The Deep (Chace Crawford), Homelander (Antony Starr), Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles...

The Amazon horror anthology series “Them” centers on a Black family that experiences terror after moving to a white neighborhood in 1950s Compton. The horror comes in both realistic and supernatural forms as Henry and Lucky Emory battle racist neighbors and otherworldly creatures who intend to drive them out of Compton, if not kill them outright. Scroll down to watch our exclusive interviews with six Emmy contenders from the limited series.
“Them” stars Ashley Thomas and Deborah Ayorinde as Henry and Lucky, while Shahadi Wright Joseph and Melody Hurd play their daughters, who are also haunted by evil spirits. Alison Pill plays Betty, a neighbor of the Emorys who leads the charge in trying to chase them out of their community. Ryan Kwanten rounds out the main cast as George, the milkman whose flirtations with Betty develop into something far more sinister. Like many domestic dramas set in the 1950s,...

Cinematographer/director Nelson Cragg knows what it’s like to be the “other.”
“I was a young half-Korean kid growing up in Ohio, so I didn’t really have much Asian anything,” he told TheWrap’s Lawrence Yee. “It was Cincinnati, so I always felt a little bit out of place.”
Coming of age in the ’80s and ’90s, he found himself gravitating towards the films of John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat. “That was the only place I really saw people that looked like myself,” he recalled. “I really kind of latched onto that. I realized looking back and I really wanted to work in movies.”
Nelson Cragg (Photo credit: Kent Smith)
Finding weekly procedurals too limiting, Cragg sought television shows that felt more cinematic. He served as the cinematographer on “Breaking Bad” before being brought onto the “Homeland” pilot.
“I can shoot the pilot. I can be involved in...

While Nelson Cragg has primarily worked as a cinematographer, in recent years he has dipped his toe in the directing pool. After directing episodes of shows like “American Horror Story” and “Pose,” Cragg faced his biggest challenge yet with the Amazon horror anthology series “Them,” for which he directed four episodes including the pilot. The series centers on the Emorys, a Black family living in the 1950s who experience virulent racism when they move to a white neighborhood in Compton. “What does it feel like to experience institutionalized racism everywhere you go, every moment, there are no safe spaces?” says Cragg in an exclusive new webchat for Gold Derby. “How do you translate that into a TV show?” Watch the full video interview above.
“Them” viewers experience not only the terror of racism but the supernatural spirits that haunt the Emory family. It was important to establish this unrelenting tone in the pilot,...

Cinematographer-turned-director Nelson Cragg has a knack for great drama, working on series such as “Homeland” and “Breaking Bad” earlier in his career. Of late, though, he has developed the special skill of blending genres in stylized period pieces such as Netflix’s “Ratched” and Amazon Prime Video’s “Them.” He directed the third episode of the former and a handful of episodes of the latter, also serving as an executive producer on the 1950s-set story of a Black family moving to Compton, Calif. from the Jim Crow South.
You directed many episodes of “Them” including the premiere, but not all of them. What did you feel you had to set up that directors who came after you had to follow?
On a limited series like this, we want consistency but our real rule on the show was, there are no rules. We wanted it to be absolutely people’s visions when they came in and,...

In watching “Them: Covenant,” the new anthology series from Amazon Prime Video, I couldn’t help but be reminded of what the gifted young actress Marsai Martin recently said during an interview about her goals as a producer.
“I don’t do no Black pain,” the “Black-ish” actress said. “If it’s Black pain I don’t go for it because there’s so many films and projects about that.”
While pain and trauma are assuredly part of the Black experience, there’s only so much a viewer can take of “Them” before it becomes numbing — and despite the noble intentions of the creators, sensationalistic. Episode after episode of this unfortunate Black family suffering terrors both real and supernatural began to wear the viewer down, especially when the white aggressors receive little comeuppance for their deeds from those being oppressed.
As mentioned in our review of the first two episodes that premiered at SXSW,...

Here’s a horror story: You have an idea for a TV show. It’s a really clever idea, one that’s never quite been done on television before. Everyone you tell about it couldn’t sound more excited. But ideas don’t turn into finished series overnight, and the development process takes so long, another show with the exact same idea premieres before yours gets the chance. Worse, the other show is a better version of that idea than what you made. So now you not only appear to be copying them,...

Even if it seems like the easy way out, it’s hard not to compare the new Amazon Prime Video series “Them” to HBO’s buzzy “Lovecraft Country.” After all, you’ve got Black people navigating previously white spaces — in this case, a family moving from North Carolina to Los Angeles — a 1950s setting, supernatural elements, anachronistic music choices, war trauma, mysterious basements, leaps in chronology, large fonts announcing a change in location, a creepy kid dancing, etc.
But the goal for all involved with “Them,” including creator Little Marvin and executive producer Lena Waithe, should be to avoid the fate of “Lovecraft,” which drew initial critical acclaim thanks to a bravura pilot but then got lost in the morass of its own mythology. By the time that series wrapped up its first season, it was more of a slog than an event. “Them” is slated as an anthology series,...

The crime of the century became a media circus, with no angle hidden -- yet behind what we saw on TV was even more conflict and consternation. There’s good reason newcomers “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” “Mr. Robot” and “The Man in the High Castle” distinguished themselves with Emmy craft noms: they brought authenticity to stories that tap into the racial divisiveness, violence and alienation that are weighing heavily on our minds this Presidential election season. And riding the surge of female empowerment, impeccably produced “Outlander” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” also landed craft recognition.
FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” grabbed 22 noms (including cinematography, costumes, makeup and editing), second only to Emmy leader “Game of Thrones” with 23. What they achieved with recreating “the trial of the century” in the ’90s was bringing it eerily full-circle today.
Verisimilitude, of course, was crucial. For cinematographer Nelson Cragg, the Bundy Drive crime scene where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered provided one challenge. Since the Brentwood condo no longer exits, they had to...

Making a low-budget horror feature that neither succumbs to nor strains to transcend its financial restrictions is harder than it appears, but the people behind Splinter make it look easy. Modest but not unambitious and put together with care on every level, it’s smart, scary and altogether satisfying creature feature of the type we don’t see enough of these days.
Director Toby Wilkins and screenwriters Kai Barry and Ian Shorr do have a bit of fun with genre expectations in the early scenes, as young lovers Seth (Paulo Costanzo) and Polly (Jill Wagner) set out for a camping trip in a rural area that we know is the hunting turf of a small, vicious creature that mauls a gas station attendant in the opening scene. The couple, however, is defeated by their tent, and they seem to be heading back to the safety of civilization when they’re...

Anthony Dod Mantle's lensing of Oscar frontrunner "Slumdog Millionaire" took the top honor at the 23rd Annual American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement Awards on Sunday night at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel.
Mantle -- who a week earlier won the BAFTA Award for cinematography -- led a competitive field that included Roger Deakins, who was double-nominated for "Revolutionary Road" and "The Reader"; Chris Menges, also for "The Reader"; Claudio Miranda for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"; and Wally Pfister for "The Dark Knight."
During the evening, Pfister presented his longtime collaborator and "Dark Knight" director Chris Nolan with the Asc Board of Governors Award. The award is given in recognition of the recipient's contributions to the art of filmmaking. Nolan and Pfister shot the opening six-minutes and several action sequences of "The Dark Knight" in the 65mm Imax film format, a first for a narrative studio feature.

Director: Toby Wilkins
Writer: Kai Barry, Ian Shorr, and Toby Wilkins
Cinematographer: Nelson Cragg
Starring: Shea Whigham, Paolo Costanzo, and Jill Wagner
Studio/Run Time: Magnet Releasing, 82 mins.
Splinter begins with a strong, though bordering on cliché, hook. Two (naturally, young) people driving from a campsite spot a woman in the road and are soon carjacked by her hick cohort. When forced to drive away, they hit and kill something monstrous in the road, quickly combining both the “something’s in the woods” theme with the less politically correct but frequently more frightening “rednecks are serial killers” concept. From here, though, the film becomes less interesting, as the cast ends up locked into a gas station, fighting to escape the monster.
