With news last week that Joss Whedon's Dollhouse officially got the cancellation axe from Fox, there's all kinds of speculation about what's next for the captain of the Whedonverse. There's still talk about Whedon's digital studio plan, which would include a second season of his web musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. But first up might be something else, especially with Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods film pushed to 2011. Sci-Fi Wire spotted a casting breakdown for a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer web series in the works. Jane Espenson recently talked to A Comicbook Orange about her writing work on the Buffy Season 8 comic book series, which could come into play in this new project. Whedon isn't officially listed on the casting breakdown, though casting director Jeff Shuter (Invincible) is. Most fans, including myself, were left feeling shortchanged and screaming for more when "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" went off the air after seven seasons. It was even worse when "Angel" got yanked, but that's a whole other can of worms. Season Eight in comic form never really did it for a huge percentage of the fanbase, but it looks like Whedon and company may have found a solution.
According to Sci-Fi Wire a series of motion-comic webisodes based on Whedon's "Season Eight" comics is very much on its way and casting people to do voiceover work as we speak.
Based on the breakdown, the series will be based on the comics and feature the characters Twilight, the Big Bad of Season Eight, and evil British socialite Slayer Lady Genevieve Savidge, who plots to usurp Buffy's place in the Slayer hierarchy.

When Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire came to an end, fans had to make due with "Fray" (a futuristic take on a slayer) and "Buffy" season eight, both released through Dark Horse Comics. There doesn't seem to be any hope for a feature film based on the successful television show (although the producers of the original movie with Kristy Swanson want to do a reboot). So where is the future of the Slayer heading now? Motion-comic webisodes. Sci Fi Wire received word that casting has begun for vocal actors to participate. It appears the series will pick up after the comic books and will see the return of a number of characters including Faith (Eliza Dushku won't be back, but casting director Jeff Shuter is seeking someone like her). Here's a taste of the...
