Speaking about Stefani’s artistic evolution, she continued, “To me, she’s a prime example of an artist who defies stereotypes and preconceived boundaries and just makes stuff that she thinks is cool… If that’s not a true artist, I don’t know what is.”

Director Mat Whitecross was handed a large task with "The Sound of 007." The filmmaker, who also directed the hilarious "Oasis: Supersonic," had to tell 60 years of history in a 90-minute documentary. The brisk doc easily could've been a six-hour miniseries exploring the life of composer John Barry or going through all the ins-and-outs of every single theme song. Whitecross didn't have that kind of time, but with the time he did have, he made a documentary that should entertain even the mildest of Bond fans.
The doc is packed with fun facts, creative disagreements, and explores the history of the most beloved and disliked Bond theme songs. Maybe the fact that Prince was a big fan of "Another Way to Die" may not change people's minds about the Alicia Keys and Jack White collaboration in "Quantum of Solace," but still, it's nice to know the song found a fan in one of the all-time greats,...

Plot: A look behind the scenes at the music of 007, from the crafting of theme songs to the scores themselves.
Review: I think the first time I ever noticed film music was in a James Bond film. My love of the James Bond film series has been well-documented here on JoBlo. After all, Nick Bosworth, our director of YouTube Operations, and I did a whole series about the 007 franchise – James Bond Revisited. But, one of the areas he and I always wanted to explore was the “James Bond sound,” most notably the music and work of John Barry. Indeed, the franchise as it exists today would not have survived were it not for the Barry sound. Everyone credits Monty Norman as the composer of the James Bond theme, and there’s some truth to that. Still, the orchestration by John Barry with the distinctive guitar playing by Vic Flick...

Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival took place at Dana Point, California, over the weekend with a bill that included Stevie Nicks, Jack White, Brittany Howard, P!nk, St. Vincent, and the Pearl Jam frontman himself. The final night of the festival happened to be five year anniversary of Tom Petty’s death, and several of the performers took a moment to honor his legacy.
It began on Friday evening when Stevie Nicks and her band — which includes Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench — took the stage to a recording of Petty’s 1989 classic “Runnin’ Down a Dream.

Stevie Nicks headlined the Friday night festivities at Eddie Vedder’s Ohana Festival, where she enlisted the Pearl Jam singer for a rendition of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”
Before launching into the Tom Petty-penned classic, Nicks talked about how the Heartbreakers frontman offered her the Bella Donna song, which soon became the biggest single of her solo career.
Nicks and her band then broke into their rendition before midway through the first verse, and with no introduction, Vedder sauntered onstage to handle Petty’s vocals on the duet.

James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has recalled her “distressing” meeting with Amy Winehouse.
The pair met in 2008 to discuss the possibility of Winehouse writing a ballad for the 007 franchise.
Her song was meant to feature in Quantum of Solace, starring Daniel Craig.
Broccoli said that “Back to Black” singer was “very fragile emotionally” when they met.
“Well, that was a very, very distressing meeting. She was not at her best and my heart really went out to her,” Broccoli told Entertainment Weekly.
“She was very fragile emotionally, and you know, you understood how she could create such moving material, because she has a great depth of feeling and it was very, very tragic.”
Broccoli added: “What an incredible talent, what an incredible voice, what an incredible person she was. And it was very, very sad.”
The Quantum of Solace theme song – titled “Another Way to Die” – was instead recorded by Jack White and Alicia Keys.

James Bond almost got the Amy Winehouse treatment.
The iconic 007 franchise, known for its sultry Oscar-winning theme songs, was meant to have a ballad written and sung by the late Grammy winner for 2008’s “Quantum of Solace” starring Daniel Craig as the famed MI6 agent. Bond producer Barbara Broccoli revealed that meeting with the “Back to Black” singer was “distressing” due to Winehouse being “not at her best” in 2008, three years before her fatal 2011 overdose.

“Dancing with the Stars” will get shaken, not stirred, when it celebrates Bond Night on Monday’s episode.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the release of the first James Bond film, “Dr. No,” the top 14 will perform to Bond theme songs on Week 3. But you won’t hear one notable tune: Adele‘s “Skyfall” from the 2012 film of the same name and the first Bond theme to win the Best Original Song Oscar. The subsequent two Oscar-winning themes, Sam Smith‘s “Writing on the Wall” from 2015’s “Spectre” and Billie Eilish‘s title track to last year’s “No Time to Die,” will be represented on the show.
And with the moody nature of most of the tracks, you will not be shocked to learn that there will be lots of rumbas — eight of them, to be exact. Definitely a missed opportunity not to make it 007.

Near the beginning of what many consider to be the definitive James Bond movie, 1964’s Goldfinger, Sean Connery’s 007 reveals himself to be simultaneously roguish and antiquated. The moment occurs when his latest conquest affronts his snobbish tastes—dismissing something to do with champagne and refrigerators. He thus believes it’s his duty to explain, “My dear girl, there are some things that just aren’t done, such as drinking Dom Pérignon ’53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs.”
Bond might’ve been the coolest fictional character around at the time of that movie’s release, but his musical tastes were clearly not. Fortunately for the superspy, his producers at Eon Productions were rarely so old-fashioned.
Over the past 60 years and 25 James Bond pictures, the Bond franchise has become synonymous in its better years with evolving with the times.

Ever since the dawn of Jack White, artists who hunger to reassert the power of rock in a rockless age have tended to sound like reactionary young coots. But Greta Van Fleet — three brothers and a drummer from Frankenmouth, Michigan — set themselves apart by playing Seventies classic rock that seemed wholly unburdened by distance, irony, cultural point-making or even self-awareness. They just really, really liked making songs that sounded like Led Zeppelin (with some Rush thrown in there, too), and on their 2018 debut, Anthem of the Peaceful Army, they approached...

If you happened to have found yourself in the middle of the current heat wave in the last few days, you may not have a whole lot else on your might right now. Feel free to borrow some rage from Evan Dorkin, though, because he feels your pain (and the heat).
Read on below, and you'll also see what prompted an prompted an alternative dating service to contact Dave McKean, Chris Ryall's response to comic book criticism from Alan Moore, and Jimmy Palmiotti's thoughts on Lindsay Lohan going to jail. Whether or not you agree with Eric Powell's message about "The Last Airbender," it's all waiting for you after the jump.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter Report for July 7, 2010.

Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage Playing a mom onscreen has never been much of a stretch for Katey Sagal, for the 55-year-old actress is a mom-of-three in real life.
Whether it was portraying Peg Bundy on Married With Children or Gemma Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, Katey says that her own experiences have informed her take on both characters — even though she often had difficulty relating to both. Peg “was devoted and loyal to her children in her own wacky way,” Katey notes, “But Gemma is intensely dedicated to her family and would do anything to protect her son and her extended family, which is the club.”
While in her own life Katey says she doubts that she would “go to the lengths” that Gemma does, she does say she’d come “close.”
“Being a mother has been my greatest teacher and also the most self-sacrificing thing I’ve ever done. I...

In our final tour date, we offer the rarely screened "Cocksucker Blues" and an encore featuring the Stones' most recent cinematic return to the stage, "Shine a Light."
Cocksucker Blues (1972)
Directed by Robert Frank
The Film: Returning to the United States for their first American tour since 1969 (covered in all its glory and tragedy in "Gimme Shelter"), the Stones hired filmmaker Robert Frank to document the trip. Frank gave cameras to all the members of the band to record their own experiences, and then edited...
