The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. As such, to coincide with an impeccably timed release...

A Generation’s Final Journey nearly killed the franchise. But did it deserve to bomb?
The first Nemesis disc I owned inexplicably didn’t work properly in my first DVD player, and eventually stopped working entirely. When rewatching the film for this article, I found that the Blu-ray I have is bent for no reason at all and won’t work in any player. I tried downloading it off Sky, but it stopped downloading halfway through and refused to download any more until I deleted the whole thing and tried again after rebooting the box. I tried Netflix but weirdly Star Trek: Nemesis is part of a different rights package to the other Next Gen movies. Is this such an awesome film that digital media are still unable to cope with its majesty? Or is it so bad that it reaches out into the real world and breaks everything it touches?...

Love Kevin Bacon, hate those bloody adverts he keeps doing...
We know we're not alone here. There's an actor very close to our hearts, who has recently found himself in a situation not entirely dissimilar to a dancing bear: a once proud creature now forced into prancing about for a cruel master, a great sadness behind his eyes. We know that you will join with us in wishing him a full and speedy recovery. We hope you will add your voice to our ideals. The man in question is the brilliant Kevin Bacon. And this message is for him.
Dear Kevin Bacon,
We love your body of work, and also your physical body. That's also rad. If we hung out – and I hope we will – you'd be among friends.
In Animal House you taught us that, to get in with the right people, sometimes...

A teaser trailer for the revived Catchphrase has debuted.
The quiz show's iconic mascot Mr Chips features in the 30-second TV spot, which was shared by host Stephen Mulhern via Twitter on Monday night (April 1).
The TV spot confirms that Catchphrase will return this Sunday (April 7) at 6.45pm.
Coronation Street's Kym Lomas, Benidorm's Steve Pemberton and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!'s Rosemary Shrager have signed up to compete in a one-off, hour-long celebrity special which will air alongside eight regular 45-minute episodes.
Mulhern told Digital Spy last autumn that it would have been "a real shame" if his Catchphrase pilot had not been picked up to series.
Speaking before the show's revival was confirmed, he said: "It's been off screens for so long. I know there's been reruns of [the original show], but young kids wouldn't have been aware of it so it's a new game for them.

Stephen Mulhern is to present a revived series of 'Catchphrase'. The 'Britain's Got More Talent' host fronted a pilot of the show earlier this summer, and ITV have decided to revive the programme, previously presented by Roy Walker. More than 300 episodes were created between 1986 and 2002, with Roy hosting it from 1989 until its demise 10 years ago. The format sees contestants attempt to work out well known catchphrases thanks to animations on a big screen. ITV Controller of Entertainment John Kaye Cooper claimed the ''popular'' show would be a welcome addition to the Saturday night TV schedule. He...

Frank Carson's funeral has taken place in his home city of Belfast. Eamonn Holmes, Lenny Henry and Roy Walker were among the celebrities who paid tribute to the comedian at St. Patrick's Church. The 85-year-old passed away at his home in Blackpool last month following a battle with stomach cancer. The service was led by Bishop Edward Daly, before Carson's coffin was taken from the Catholic church to the nearby Protestant St Anne's Cathedral, as part of his wish to be liked by everyone, the BBC reports. The Shining's Overlook hotel remains one of the most disturbing locations in horror. Here's its history, and how it tells Kubrick's story...
Cinema is full of set designs so beautiful, you almost wish you they were real. Fritz Lang had vast chunks of city built for Metropolis. Joseph Mankiewicz nearly brought 20th Century Fox to its knees, so huge and sumptuous were his sets for 1963’s Cleopatra.
Thinking back over the course of movie history, how many films can you think of where the set itself is as big a star as the actors that emote within it? In Alien or Blade Runner, perhaps. The impossibly creepy motel and Victorian house of horrors in Psycho, maybe. The set in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, I’d argue, towers over all these.
In no other film has an interior felt so mundane and yet so palpably evil...

Director Stanley Kubrick's 1975 feature "Barry Lyndon", the best period movie ever realized, based on the 1844 novel "The Luck of Barry Lyndon" by author William Makepeace Thackeray, is now available on Blu-ray.
Considered Kubrick's masterpiece, "Barry Lyndon" recounts the (satirical) exploits of an insincere, 18th century, fortune-hunting Irish rogue.
Director Martin Scorsese has said that "Barry Lyndon" is his favorite Kubrick film, and although we love certain parts of "2001: A Space Odyssey", "The Shining" and "Full Metal Jacket", next to Kubrick's Oscar-nominated "Dr. Strangelove" and "A Clockwork Orange", we concur with Scorsese, with one-note actor Ryan O'Neal perfectly cast as a wooden innocent, determined to maintain his standing as a 'gentleman', while evolving into a devious scoundrel, in order to survive the era's war and debauchery.
Drawing inspiration from "the landscapes of Watteau and Gainsborough," Kubrick and cinematographer John Alcott also relied on the meticulous art direction of Ken Adam and Roy Walker,...

She continued:
“It is time for me to hang up my long black coat, move on and leave Most Haunted as its presenter in order to pursue other projects.”

Roy Walker has said that he would "love" ITV game show Catchphrase to be revived. The veteran comedian admitted that he was not happy with the direction the programme took after he departed in 1999, but claimed that he would love the series to be brought back. "I get a bit tired of it because it's probably never going to happen, [but] I would love it to happen again because it's been off for so long," he told Digital Spy. "It was unique as a gameshow because there was such great material." Walker was replaced as the host of the quiz by Nick Weir in 2000. Mark Curry took the helm two years later, but the programme (more)...

Filmed in over 20 countries over a period of 4 years and entirely self-financed by its director, it is a miracle indeed that The Fall (2006) ever got made. Since The Fall made its premiere at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival it remained in limbo, unseen by the world until two of Hollywood's most influential filmmakers; David Fincher and Spike Jonze rescued it from distribution hell and maybe just brought us the most beautiful film of 2008…

Director and co-writer Tarsem's The Fall, the follow-up to the visually resplendent Jennifer Lopez thriller The Cell, is one of the year's best films you probably haven't seen. Filmed in 18 different countries over a four year period, this audaciously constructed and paced gothic fairy tale of friendship and loss is as engrossing as it is wonderful. It is a story of intense drama, stirring action and heartbreaking emotion, all of it stimulated by the actions of a five-year-old child whose limitless curiosities can't help but inspire. Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) is the young daughter of immigrant migrant farmers working the fields in 1915 Los Angeles. After she breaks her arm in a fall during a tragic accident, she finds herself wandering the halls of a secluded hospital looking for things to do. It is here she meets bedridden movie stuntman Roy Walker (Lee Pace), also the victim of a horrific fall...

- Walking through the labyrinthine corridors of the Waldof Towers I fear I’ve lost my way until an eruption of laughter exploded behind one of the mirrored doors. I’m in the right place. Tarsem, whose best known for his dynamic commercial career, emerges from his hotel room barefoot, grinning and he quickly became one of the most ingratiating filmmakers I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing. Set in the early years on silent cinema,The Fall tells the story of a young stunt man, Roy Walker, who injuries himself to the point of paralysis. Suicidal and depressed he begs little Alexandria, another patient at the hospital, to provide him with Morphine in exchange for a fantastic story. Tarsem has only directed one feature film prior to The Fall, the 1999 thriller The Cell which starred Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn. The film received a lukewarm reception and disillusioned the director with the Hollywood machine.
