Zac Efron’s Greatest Movie That Faced History’s Most Horrible Oscar Snub Gets Streaming Release Date
It still feels disappointing how Zac Efron’s sports thriller film The Iron Claw took home zero nominations at this year’s Oscar Awards. Highly praised by critics and well-received by fans, the movie had everything to make it to the prestigious event. Unfortunately, it only had the Oscar buzz.
The Iron Claw
Portraying Kevin Von Erich, Efron does not really feel affected by the result of the Oscars, and neither does the movie’s director. Both of them are grateful for the opportunity, and the audience’s positive reception was their main prize.

Max announced on Friday that the acclaimed wrestling drama The Iron Claw from Cannes and Sundance prize-winning filmmaker Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) will begin streaming exclusively on the platform through its output deal with distributor A24 on May 10.
Based on a true story, The Iron Claw follows the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. The film specifically hones in on the supposed “Von Erich curse,” which would see one Von Erich brother after another meet their untimely end, leaving just Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron) left.
Written and directed by Durkin, the film also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany, Maura Tierney and Lily James, among others. A24 financed the pic alongside Access Entertainment and BBC Films. In addition to A24, producers included Tessa Ross,...

The Iron Claw was unarguably one of the best films from 2023, garnering massive critical commendation in both its reviews and box office earnings. In fact, people even called the movie Zac Efron’s career’s best performance, because it most certainly was. Despite that, the masterpiece was brutally snubbed at the Academy Awards 2024, not even scoring a single nomination.
The Iron Claw (2023).
Needless to mention, this brought about a lot of rage from fans and viewers who were absolutely in love with the epic performance Efron delivered in the movie. And now, it seems like the fan-favorite Formula One race car driver Lewis Hamilton has also joined that league, considering how he expressed the 2023 masterpiece deserved to be treated with a lot more recognition than that.

“The Sadness Will Last Forever”: The life of wrestler Kevin Von Erich could probably be described by the iconic final words of Vincent Van Gogh. Sean Darkin’s Von Erich biopic, titled The Iron Claw, is the depiction of that story, which is inarguably one of the saddest possible ones to grace cinema in recent years. My head still hurts thanks to the amount of tears the movie made me shed during its final ten minutes, which only indicates that Darkin has nailed it—and so has the cast, led by an impeccable Zac Efron as Kevin, in his career-best performance. We’re going to dissect, discuss, and attempt to find the answer to the biggest question this movie floats, regarding the existence of a curse in the ill-fated Texas-based family, and hopefully find some solace by the end of the article.

Jonathan Glazer's "The Zone of Interest" is one of the most harrowing films of 2023, and easily one of the best. The bulk of the film takes place in a rather nice, clean, well-kempt country home in the Polish countryside. A military officer lives there with his family, and they spend their days in their lovely garden, tending to their greenhouse, trying on clothes, and playing with unusual toys. The military man is Kommandant Rudolf Höss. Sharing a wall with his property is the Auschwitz concentration camp. Smoke billows from the furnaces in the background while Höss and his family sip drinks in the sunshine. The clothes they try on have been stolen off the backs of the Jewish prisoners being tortured and killed just next door. The unusual toys are gold teeth.

Sadly, even the claws are not enough to prey on the Oscar nominations. Robbed of even a single Oscar nomination, The Iron Claw can relate to it. An inspiring story of the real-life Von Erich brothers, The Iron Claw became fans’ favorite without a doubt. Released on December 22, 2023, the movie is an ambitious and forceful account of the top-gear wrestlers of the early 1980s.
The movie has already been nominated for the National Board of Review Award for Best Ensemble. However, the actors and the crew seem to be unhappy because of not getting the most prestigious award which they, as well as their fans, think that they rightfully deserved.

Zac Efron found it “very uncomfortable” standing around in his underwear between takes on the set of ‘The Iron Claw’.The actor, 36, plays wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the movie alongside Harris Dickinson, ‘The Bear’ star Jeremy Allen White and Stanley Simons as the rest of the wrestling Von Erich siblings, David, Kerry and Mike.Zac told Metro about the biggest downside of the part: “One of the jarring moments that I wasn’t expecting was when the wrestling stops, or there’s a cut, or in between set-ups or takes – you’ve just got to stand there with a whole crowd around, in your underwear.“And there’s nothing really going on.“That’s a different kind of feeling. I’ve never experienced that one before.“You just kind of gotta, like, where do you put your hands? On your hips? You can’t help it – there are people everywhere,...

Have you always wanted to take Zac Efron home? Well, A24 is giving you your chance – so long as you don’t mind him as an action figure. The studio has unveiled a new Zac Efron figure in the form of Kevin Von Erich, the real-life pro wrestler he played in last year’s The Iron Claw. The throwback figure is up for pre-order on A24’s site.
Here is A24’s brief description of the Zac Efron von Erich figure, complete with a nod to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer”, a song featured in the movie: “Modern-day warrior, mean, mean stride. Deliver a good ol’ fashioned Texas whooping with The Iron Claw Kevin Von Erich Action Figure.” The figure stands 6.5”, comes with a removable jacket and has 23 points of articulation. It is priced at $48 and will ship in August. Unfortunately for many, A24 has skipped on Jeremy Allan White’s Kerry Von Erich…...

A career-best turn from Zac Efron, plus a tide of true-life triumph and tragedy, power director Sean Durkin’s bone-crunching drama
“There’s nothing fake about what we do,” says wrestler Kevin Von Erich. He’s fielding a coy question from flirtatious fan (and girlfriend in waiting) Pam (Lily James), and he fervently believes what he’s saying. She, reasonably, asks him how anyone can call themselves a “world champion” wrestler when so much of what plays out in the ring is “pre-arranged”. Kevin argues that the performance is the point; that the difference between a Speedo-clad lunk sweating it out on the provincial circuit and a bona fide champion boils down to self-belief and the quality of the show that they put on for the audience.
And this is a central idea in writer-director Sean Durkin’s powerful third film, a factually based account of the larger-than-real-life Von Erich wrestling dynasty,...

Actor Zac Efron’s dance experience helped him prepare for his role as a wrestler in ‘The Iron Claw’. The 36-year-old actor shot to fame when he played Troy Bolton in the Disney Channel hit ‘High School Musical’ before starring as Link Larkin in the film adaptation of Broadway musical ‘Hairspray’ and admitted that his experience turned out to be of use when he was learning to wrestle for his part as Kevin Von Erich in the new biopic, reports Female First UK.
He told HeyUGuys: “Dancing helped, for sure. There was no way to get into wrestling other than just to start. All the guys, we committed from the very first day, from the very first lesson. We showed up, we dropped our egos at the door and just started to listen.”

Of all the characters in the wrestling biopic "The Iron Claw," it's patriarch Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany) who comes out looking the worst. As his sons slowly but surely fall apart in their pursuit of wrestling (and their pursuit of their father's approval), Fritz is right there egging them on, pushing them further and further toward the brink.
Although the real-life Kevin Von Erich still considers his father to have been an "honorable, good man," the rest of the world considers Fritz to be a bit of a villain, holding him at least a little bit to blame for three of his sons (not just two like in the movie) dying by suicide, and a fourth dying from the stress wrestling and drugs put on his body. The movie itself follows along with this view, giving us a Fritz who pushes forth a limited,...

Long before A24 produced Sean Durkin's emotionally obliterating drama "The Iron Claw" (read our review here), the stars at the center of the story, The Von Erichs, were wrestling royalty. It's difficult to fully encompass just how huge the Von Erich Boys were, both in size/stature and popularity. These were wrestlers so famous they appeared in commercials, had their own comic book series, and were known the world over without the assistance of national television or the internet. In fact, Durkin grew up watching old VHS tapes of Von Erich matches that took place in Texas while he was living in England. This is to say that if you know where to look, there's a hell of a lot of Von Erich merch floating out there. Autographed photos, T-shirts, bandanas, trading cards, posters, magazines, replica belts, and even the World Class Wrestling Von Erich-themed board game, are ready...

Many folks discovered actor Holt McCallany in his brawny breakout role as FBI analyst Bill Tench in David Fincher’s serial killer series “Mindhunter” (Netflix). McCallany, who is 60, brought an old-fashioned robust masculinity over three decades to countless smaller roles, from Fincher’s “Alien 3” and “Fight Club” to Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley.”
“Del Toro is one of the kindest, smartest and most gifted filmmakers,” said McCallany over Zoom. “The only thing is, he wouldn’t let me do my own stunts. ‘Guillermo. I can do it! There are many actors whose public image will forever be defined by one iconic role. Al Pacino and Michael Corleone. Daniel Radcliffe and Harry Potter. Zac Efron and Troy Bolton.
To millions of millennials and zoomers, Zachary David Alexander Efron will forever be associated with his role as Troy in Disney’s “High School Musical” trilogy of TV films. A cultural phenomenon that remains a beloved nostalgic favorite today, the franchise made Efron a teen idol at 18, and “The Iron Claw” star’s performance as romantic lead Troy forever defined his public image moving forward: an impossibly earnest sweetheart jock, the type of high school heartthrob that could only exist in a Disney version of reality.
A straight to TV movie musical for tweens isn’t the most prestigious way to begin your career, but Efron, for his part, has mostly spoken fondly about the experience in the years since.

For Zac Efron, A24’s The Iron Claw was the most challenging project in a career of more than two decades, but “in the best ways possible.”
In the film from writer-director Sean Durkin, he chronicles the real-life rise to greatness, and journey through gobsmacking tragedy, of Kevin Von Erich, the eldest son in a family of wrestlers, which has made a huge impact on the sport from the 1960s to the present day. Or at least, the eldest still alive as this particular story begins.
Following the drowning of firstborn Jack Jr. at the age of six, Kevin would step up as the gentle and loving leader of his siblings, working alongside brothers Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), David (Harris Dickinson) and Mike (Stanley Simons) to try to fulfill the impossible athletic expectations of their old-school, emotionally remote wrestler father, Fritz (Holt McCallany). The Iron Claw is full of bruises. The family at the center of writer-director Sean Durkin’s film, the Von Erichs (a stage name much different than their surname Adkisson), revels in ring-induced contusions. The bodies of the boys in the ring take a collective beating, a constant amount of pressure and pleasure from winning wrestling bouts often organized by their father and coach, Jack (Holt McCallany). Durkin’s biopic initially celebrates the glory in the ring, but as time passes and the young men fall one-by-one, the filmmaker focuses on the moments before and after each match, on muscles about to break, on psyches hanging by a thread, on the sheer weight of generational masculinity forcing its way into their heads.

Zac Efron “doesn’t know” if he enjoyed working on ‘The Iron Claw’.The 36-year-old actor portrays wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the biographical sports drama and he spent so much time focusing on his physique, he cut out all socialising and having fun, and he is concerned he spent too much time “narrowing [his] world”.He told The Rake magazine: “I didn’t do any socialising during filming, I was fully committed to the gym.“Wake up, ice bath, trying to find decent food, then training upwards of two hours per day.“I was putting a lot into it, all different modalities of training.“Feeling that was unique, I don’t know if I was enjoying it or not, it takes you out of a place where you have the ability to socialise with friends or family or travel or have the legs under you to go out and have...

One funny aspect of particularly huge athletes is just how small they can make the average person look. Most people don't think of Jimmy Fallon as short, for instance, but he sure looks tiny when he's standing next to Shaquille O'Neale. Even famously big, tough guys can still look small when you place an even bigger, tougher guy next to them, such as when Vin Diesel had to stand next to Dwayne Johnson in multiple "Fast and Furious" movies. Director Justin Lin tried to use forced perspective to make them look equally matched in "Fast & Furious 6," but it didn't fool anyone.
A similar dynamic played out in the '80s between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Kerry Von Erich, the wrestler played by Jeremy Allen White in "The Iron Claw." Wrestling hall-of-famer Cody Rhodes told WWE the famously huge Schwarzenegger didn't want to take a picture with Von Erich because he knew he'd look unimpressive in comparison.

In the small group of celebrities who have tried out professional wrestling, most have been absolute flops: New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor main eventing WrestleMania XI was an embarrassment, while David Arquette winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship remains one of the worst stunts in pro wrestling history (and that’s saying something). In fairness, Logan Paul is a genuine talent and even Bad Bunny has proven capable in the ring, but they are definitely outliers. Now, one prominent pro wrestling roster may find itself bulking up, as The Iron Claw stars Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White expressed interest in stepping into the squared circle.

This article discusses the real-life story of The Von Erichs and as such could be viewed as containing spoilers for "The Iron Claw."
Sean Durkin's "The Iron Claw" is the tearjerker film of the year, one that I called "emotionally eviscerating" in my review as it takes a folkloric look at the real-life tragedies of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty. The film focuses on Kevin, David, Kerry, and Mike Von Erich throughout the 1980s and early '90s, a decade filled with unimaginable deaths and heartache. Despite this, "The Iron Claw" ends with a bit of optimism, and a cathartic release for Kevin Von Erich, known as "The Last of the Von Erichs." The film ends sometime in the 1990s and given the harrowing true story at the center of the film, non-wrestling fans might be wondering what happened to Kevin Von Erich and the rest of the family in the years that followed.

The Stone Cold Stunner. The People's Elbow. Sweet Chin Music. The Figure Four. 619. There are some moves in the world of professional wrestling that are so well-known they can be identified by non-wrestling fans outside of the squared circle. And now, one of the most compelling submission moves in wrestling history — the Iron Claw — is the title of Sean Durkin's heartbreaking drama about the Von Erich family. During an Iron Claw, the wrestler places all five fingers over the face of their opponent and squeezes as hard as they can into the temples. It's one of the most evocative moves in a wrestler's arsenal because there's no way to "fake" it. The audience can see a bare hand over an agonized face, giving the impression that if the wrestler didn't stop ... they could crush a skull like an empty soda can.
And no one could do it like Fritz Von Erich.

The outcomes in wrestling might be staged, but the pain is very real. Pro wrestlers grapple, smash, and slam each other around for our amusement, and several documentaries and features already consider the long-term physical and emotional effects of life in the ring. But Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw might be the best of them, a heartbreaking true story about one of the sport’s biggest dynasties and the curse they sought to climb out from under.
The film begins with Fritz Von Erich (Holt McCallany) in the ring, delivering his famous finishing move – from which the film gets its name – to an opponent as his fans cheer him on. But the majority of the film follows him in his career as a promoter in Texas, where his true iron grip is on his sons, each of whom he trains and berates in order to help them secure what...

As a dyed-in-the-wool wrestling fan, Sean Durkin's "The Iron Claw" was one of my most anticipated films of 2023. Based on the real-life story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty (real last name Adkisson), the film features Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich (my personal favorite of the Von Erich brothers), Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, and Maura Tierney as Doris Adkisson. For wrestling fans, the Von Erich story is the stuff of infamy, a dark moment in the industry's history that weighs heavy on the hearts of multiple generations. Pulling off "The Iron Claw" would be no easy feat for those involved, but the result is one of the best films of 2023.

Amid all the Christmas tentpole movies, a legitimately great film is getting a quiet release, with A24’s The Iron Claw now in theaters. A devastating account of the rise and fall of the Von Erich family, whose rumoured curse claimed the lives of no less than five brothers, it’s up there with the year’s best movies. It features a towering, career-best role for star Zac Efron, who plays Kevin Von Erich, a journeyman wrestler who lacks the flash and sizzle of his younger siblings but tries to hold them all together. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson star as two of his beloved, ill-fated younger brothers, Kerry and David, while Holt McCallany and Maura Tierney play their parents. McCallany’s Fritz Von Erich might have been the villain of a more simplistic telling of the Von Erich story. Still, the reality was that he was a complicated man who,...

Sean Durkin’s “The Iron Claw” is less Christmas crowdpleaser than family downer, but this skillfully directed portrait of the tragic rise, fall, and resurrection of the Von Erich wrestling family dynasty should be a holiday hit for A24. Its stacked cast includes a Hollywood favorite with a beloved risen-from-the-ashes story of his own (Zac Efron), at least one super hot name right now (Jeremy Allen White), and a fast-rising indie darling on his way to becoming a household name (Harris Dickinson).

Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw picks up right where the acclaimed filmmaker’s first two films left off. 2011’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and 2020’s The Nest both received critical praise, as did the staggering performances of Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, respectively. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Zac Efron is now receiving the best reviews of his career in Durkin’s latest well-received drama about the tragic true story of the Von Erich wrestling family.
The A24 film centers on Efron’s Kevin Von Erich, as he’s the sole survivor of a real-life nuclear family that once included five other sons: Jack Jr, David (Harris Dickinson), Kerry (Jeremy Allen White), Mike (Stanley Simons) and Chris. In a tough decision, Durkin cut the youngest brother, Chris, from the proceeding, since there’s only so much trauma an audience can handle in one two-hour-plus sitting.

Plot: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, part of a professional wrestling dynasty in the early 1980s, as they endure tragedy and triumph under the shadow of their domineering father and coach.
Review: The Iron Claw is a film that a lot of people in the movie and professional wrestling communities have been looking forward to. Especially after the episode of Dark Side of the Ring on the Von Erich “curse”, fascination with the subject has soared like a Kevin Von Erich flying crossbody. For me, too, having loved professional wrestling since I was a child, and having seen a lot of the Von Erich tragedy play out, I wondered how in the world Sean Durkin could turn this into a story that audiences could enjoy.

Zac Efron has already earned the best reviews of his career for the dark new professional wrestling film "The Iron Claw," and now he and his co-stars are opening up about the intense process of making the movie. In this week's Variety cover story, the former teen idol spoke about what it was like to embody real-life athlete and performer Kevin Von Erich, whose pro wrestler family was torn apart by a string of accidents and tragedies in the '80s and '90s. While Efron's preparation for the role doesn't sound like it was dangerous (he says he "learned the hard way about not sacrificing [his] real health for a look on camera" from past roles), it does come across as a pretty isolating and all-consuming experience.

Zac Efron’s earning some of the best reviews of his career for his starring role as Kevin Von Erich in The Iron Claw (check out our rave here). Despite often being cast as a pretty boy thanks to the enduring legacy of the High School Musical series, Efron cites his casting in the film as a full circle moment. In an interview with Variety, Efron says that in 2008, when he was at the height of his High School Musical fame, he went to see Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler with his father. He cites Mickey Rourke’s performance in that film as one of the key inspirations for his career, telling the publication, “I was watching it with my dad, and I remember looking at him in that moment, saying, ‘That’s what I want to do. That’s where my heart is.”

When Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” came out in 2008, Zac Efron was two movies deep into the Disney Channel’s “High School Musical” franchise, in which he played singing, dancing basketball phenom Troy Bolton. He’d been the swoony romantic lead in the movie musical “Hairspray,” opposite John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer, was shortly to play opposite Matthew Perry in “17 Again,” and had pulled his T-shirt up on the cover of Rolling Stone under the headline “The New American Heartthrob.” At 21, Efron might have seemed like the kind of actor who was as likely to watch footage of the moon landing and decide to become an astronaut as he was to take inspiration from Mickey Rourke’s grizzled, broken-down performance.
And yet. “That film impacted me in a really specific way,” he recalls over lunch in Los Angeles. “I was watching it with my dad, and I remember looking at him in that moment,...

Hollywood actor Zac Efron underwent a “jarring” transformation for ‘The Iron Claw’. The 36-year-old actor got ripped to play the professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich in the new movie and felt his look, which included a wig and tiny wrestling shorts, was “ridiculous” initially until things came together.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, December 11, Efron said: “In the best way possible, I did not look anything like me. It was jarring at first, but we kind of put it together piece by piece.”
“Individually, the wig by itself looks kind of ridiculous; by themselves, the clothes look pretty crazy,” he divulged. “When you put them all together in the sets that our team built and get out there in the ring under those lights, it looks like the Von Erichs, man, and that was our goal. I think it added a lot to it.

The world of professional wrestling is filled with enough tragedy to constitute its own dedicated documentary series about it, but there has never been a story of familial annihilation quite like the Von Erichs. Often compared to the Kennedy family, the Von Erichs were/are a dynasty of wrestling superstars and the subject of unimaginable despair. Telling their story outside of a documentary setting seems an impossible task, but Sean Durkin has done the impossible with "The Iron Claw." While marketed as a biopic, "The Iron Claw" is more like a dramatic retelling of the Von Erich story — a legend retold blow by blow and presented as if it were modern folklore.
