2018 Olivier Awards nominations: ‘Hamilton’ lands record 13, ‘The Ferryman’ leads among plays with 8
Two years after sweeping the Tony Awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s musical “Hamilton” is poised to do the same at the British equivalent, the Olivier Awards. On March 6, it reaped a record 13 bids for these top theater prizes, shattering the record set by the musical “Hairspray” in 2008 and equalled by the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” last year. On the play side, the leading contender is Jez Butterworth‘s “The Ferryman,” a dark drama about the Irish troubles which is set to come to Broadway in the fall.
Winners will be announced in a ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall on April 8 hosted by Catherine Tate. Unlike the Tony Awards, which are showcased live on CBS, the Olivier Awards get only a clips package on ITV later that evening and a live feed on BBC Radio 2.

It's the clash of the titans in Digital Spy's exclusive clip from Celebrity Benchmark, as Jimmy Carr takes on Joey Essex.
Paddy McGuinness hosts the celebrity edition of the Channel 4 game show, which launches a five-part series tomorrow night (September 26) at 7pm.
Jimmy and Joey appear to be very competitive in the game, which could see one celebrity winning up to £50,000 for charity with the help of ten famous 'benchmarkers'.
Joey does have a point though - the question in the video above isn't totally clear and we call shenanigans.
Vic Reeves, John Thomson, Lesley Joseph and Edwina Currie are among the other celebs taking part in the series, which follows its civilian daytime edition earlier this year.

It's been 18 years since Alan Partridge first mooted the notion of Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank - and as of last week, the project is a dream no longer.
Eubank's team-up with Hostelworld is, of course, a deliberate tip of the hat to Steve Coogan's comic creation - but too often the telly schedules are plagued with examples of #AccidentalPartridge.
Behold, 12 shows that sound like they sprang straight from Alan's fertile mind - this little lot are on a par with Inner City Sumo or Arm Wrestling with Chas 'n' Dave.
1. Flockstars
Celebrity shepherding - Lesley Joseph goes from Birds to sheep and Fazer from N-Dubz lends livestock some street cred.
No-one makes a pun on Amanda Lamb's name, though. Missed opportunity.
2. Gordon Behind Bars
"Cooking in prison" was a format that Alan Partridge actually pitched to Tony Hayers, but it took foul-mouthed foodie Gordon Ramsay to make it a reality.

Martin Kemp has joined the cast of Birds of a Feather.
The actor will make a special guest appearance in the first episode of the new series, playing a character called Vince.
Unsurprisingly, Lesley Joseph's Dorien takes an instant shine to him.
The new series of Birds of a Feather is currently filming and will air on ITV in 2016. It will be the show's 12th series in total and its third since moving to ITV last year.
Star Linda Robson recently explained why she turned down the chance to join Strictly Come Dancing, saying she didn't want to be the joke act.
However, she suggested that Joseph - who is currently appearing on ITV's Flockstars - would be a great addition to the dancing competition.

Well, that was something. ITV launched its new reality show Flockstars tonight and it's fair to say that we are utterly baffled.
The show sees a group of celebs learning how to become shepherds, so it's basically One Man And His Dog but with that one out of N-Dubz (no, not that one - and no, not that one either, he's still recovering from doing the fishing show on ITV 4... the other one).
We couldn't help but wonder what the heck we were watching. Are the contestants involved feeling sheepish now? (Sorry.) Was it just too woolly a concept for primetime? (Sorry.) Is it best if we move on from the terrible puns and onto the 15 questions we have about Flockstars? Probably.
1. Why is it so loud? Good God, the show began and the booming voice and loud music practically knocked us off our chairs. Won't somebody think of the sheepdogs?...

Linda Robson has turned down the chance to appear on the new series of Strictly Come Dancing.
The Birds of a Feather actress feared that she would become the "joke" of the show, and didn't want to traumatise her kids by making a fool of herself.
She told the Daily Star: "You have to know your capabilities. I could not learn one routine. I did Let's Dance for Sport Relief and I could not remember the routine and I had three weeks to learn it.
"I don't mind people laughing with me but my kids would be traumatised. I would be the joke one if I went on the show and I don't want that."
Despite her reluctance to take part, Robson thinks her co-star Lesley Joseph, 69, would be a "fantastic" addition to the line-up.
Linford Christie has also revealed that he said no to the popular dancing series, describing...

Remember the first ever Love Island with its seemingly clueless single celebrities constantly bickering on a tumultuous and stormy (literally and metaphorically) Fijian island?
Even the show's co-hosts Kelly Brook and Patrick Kielty were baying for one another's blood when Kielty decided to declare during one live show that Brook had previously dated contestant Paul Danan.
Other memorable highlights included Abi Titmuss becoming more and more enraged as Fran Cosgrave repeatedly referred to her as Vanessa Feltz, swiftly followed by a tipsy and uncouth Rebecca Loos letting rip.
The series aired almost exactly a decade ago, so we found ourselves wondering - whatever happened to eventual winner Jayne Middlemiss? And the Love Island love god that was Lee Sharpe?
As the new non-celebrity series currently enjoys its ITV2 revival, we find out what the 12 star contestants have gone on to do since their 2005 stint below:

Joey Essex and Jimmy Carr will take part in celebrity specials of Channel 4's Benchmark.
Other stars include Amanda Byram, Vic Reeves, Lesley Joseph, John Thomson and Mark Watson.
James Haskell, Edwina Currie and Jason Byrne will also feature.
Each of the five specials, airing on primetime, sees one celebrity hoping to win up to £50,000 for their chosen charity, with help from the ten 'Benchmarkers'.
The Benchmarkers must answer tricky numerical general knowledge questions, with their answers setting the benchmark. The main contestant then has to decide whether the correct answer is higher or lower.
Host Paddy McGuinness said: "You've got the genius of the show itself, combined with the mayhem involved when you throw a bunch of celebrities into the mix. It's going to be brilliant.
"The only thing I'm worried about is how long the recordings are going to take. That, and getting a word in edgeways.

The channel revived the former BBC sitcom earlier this year following a 15-year break, and it has become ITV's most successful comedy launch in over a decade.
The new series - starring Pauline Quirke, Lesley Joseph and Linda Robson - will be the comedy's second run for ITV and the eleventh overall.
The eight-part run will once again be penned by original writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran with Gary Lawson and John Phelps, and will begin filming later this year.

Lesley Joseph is keeping her fingers crossed for a second series of Birds of a Feather following its phenomenal ratings success so far this year.
ITV revived the former BBC sitcom, following a 15-year break, and it has proved to be their biggest comedy hit for a decade.
Speaking to Digital Spy about the overwhelming success, the Dorien Green actress said: "I'm really thrilled. Before the first episode, all of us were so, so nervous. We were counting down the sleeps and watching in the corner of the room thinking, 'Please like it, please like it'.
"Life has changed, sitcoms have changed, but I think we've tapped into a family audience that probably never really went away."
Commenting on a potential second series, she added: "Everyone is keeping their powder dry until the end of the series. If it suddenly dropped to 2 million by the end of the series, they may think twice.

Lesley Joseph says returning to the role of Dorien Green in 'Birds of a Feather' has been hard work. The 68-year-old actress admits the worst thing about reprising her part as the glamorpuss in the sitcom, 15 years after the last series aired, is having to spend at least two more hours in hair and make-up getting dolled up than her co-stars Linda Robson and Pauline Quirke, as well as slimming down to show off her pins in miniskirts. She told The Sun newspaper: ''I had to lose a bit of weight and tone up. It took a lot of work. But...

A Birds of a Feather reunion, you say. On ITV, you say. The traditional laws of TV comedy suggested that this project had disaster written all over it.
The original BBC series was hardly cutting edge. Yes, it was a rare beast in that it had three female leads, but anyone who has ever invested in a box set can let you know that they haven't aged particularly well over time.
The show would probably be best placed in the Brittas Empire school of '90s sitcoms rather than vintage Only Fools and Horses.
Meanwhile, ITV's recent ventures into broad, mass-appeal comedies (Vicious, The Job Lot) haven't matched their drama counterparts (Downton, Broadchurch), too often missing the right tone or, in some cases, just being plain goddamn awful.
However, 15 years on from the show's end on the BBC, something peculiar has happened. Maybe it's fuzzy nostalgia (ahh, the Irving Berlin theme tune,...

Upstairs Downstairs, Absolutely Fabulous, Open All Hours, yes the BBC have revived a number of long dead shows over the past few years. Tonight, ITV got in on the act with a revived version of the BBC 90s comedy classic Birds of a Feather. It’s been about 15 years since the BBC cancelled the show and yet the star trio (Linda Robson, Pauline Quirke and Lesley Joseph) looked basically the same. The onscreen chemistry was still there too although their sitz im leben had changed just a tad.
The Stubbs girls previously lived together after their partners were jailed for their role in an armed robbery. At the start of the Birds of a Feather reboot, Sharon is living alone in a shoebox sized bedsit. After a chance encounter with Dorien, Tracey takes pity on her sister and invites her back to the family home.

The stars of Birds of a Feather have spoken about the return of the former BBC sitcom.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Linda Robson, Lesley Joseph and Pauline Quirke addressed the fact that the show is moving channels.
The series will air on ITV after the BBC - which aired the original version from 1989 until 1998 - rejected the new concept.
Robson said: "[The BBC] offered a half-hour Christmas special and ITV promised eight episodes, so funnily enough we decided to go for the eight episodes.
"Apparently there was a policy at the BBC that they didn't like doing retrospective series. And we needed to bring the characters up to date, which takes more than half an hour, doesn't it?"
Joseph added that she had embarked on a diet for the show's comeback, saying: "I've lost a stone and a half to get back into tiny short skirts. Dorien's outfits are very uncompromising,...

Lesley Joseph has strongly hinted that classic BBC sitcom Birds of a Feather could be revived following a successful theatre tour. Birds of a Feather ran for nine series between 1989 and 1998, regularly pulling in big ratings for BBC One. Joseph played next-door neighbour Dorien Green, who was notorious for her affairs with younger men. John Foster (Christopher Dane) is fed up. He’s lost his job, bills are piling up, his partner keeps nagging him. Along with his friend and fellow couch potato Chris (Lee Boardman) he decides to put some silly things on “an online auction site” (*cough* eBay) including soiled underwear and himself. A regional news crew catches up with him one morning as the auction is drawing to a close and then follow him in real time as the clock counts down to the end of his selling of himself. He and Chris are bewildered by all of the attention, then seduced by the promise from ambitious reporter Maia (Jessica Blake) of fame and fortune, before things really start to get out of hand with locals and international news hotshots gathering outside his house, all keen to see what will happen. How much is a human life worth? – we are repeatedly asked to consider.

And now here's a poster and trailer for a third movie, this time a small-scale British indie called Being Sold. It's the story of a bloke who, following redundancy, puts himself up for sale on an online auction site – ignoring several international and national laws outlawing slavery in the process, we might add. The cast includes Christopher Dane (Born of Hope), Lee Boardman (Rome), Eva Pope (Waterloo Road), Jessica Blake (The Butterfly Tattoo) as well as Chris Hannon (Lunch Monkeys), Lesley Joseph (Birds of a Feather), John Thompson, Terry Christian and Roy Walker.A percentage of the film's box office is apparently going to Amnesty International, and a release date is due to be announced in the next couple of days. The Grumpy Old Women really rocked Lady Gaga’s Poker Face on tonight’s Let’s Dance For Sport Relief and the half naked backing dancers certainly didn’t hurt the routine.
Taking part was Lesley Joseph, Susie Blake, Linda Robson and Jenny Eclair and the post-menopausal bunch were so well disguised, that we couldn’t even identify the one in the green outfit who was showing way too much crotch! Perversely, we found ourselves trying to work out which granny was the hottest. We have decided on the one in blue.
Jack Dee made us laugh when he claimed that the old dolls “made hip replacements sexy again”.
