Ron Harper, who starred in iconic science-fiction series like Planet of the Apes and Land of the Lost, has died at 91. His daughter, Nicole Longeuay, says her father died of natural causes at his home in West Hills on Thursday.
Ron Harper, with his golden hair, piercing eyes, and suave demeanor, was an understudy for Paul Newman on Broadway before playing notable roles like Alan Virdon in the Planet of the Apes series, Uncle Jack in Land of the Lost, and Peter Whitmore in the TV series Generations. Before striking it rich with roles that would increase his star power, Harper appeared in four series that never got a second season, including 87th Precinct, Wendy and Me, The Jean Arthur Show, and Garrison’s Gorillas.

The early days of the pandemic were like living in some unholy vortex. Stores were indefinitely shuttered. The streets were eerily abandoned. And the threat of Covid lurked around every corner. While it has been four years since those rudimentary times, and we’ve returned to some normalcy, the danger still exists in hushed whispers and the shadows that line our periphery. When I recently reflected back upon 2020, I couldn’t help but recall a pair of apocalyptic-style films that perfectly capture the paranoia and the fear that an outbreak breeds – Barry Levinson’s The Bay and John Erick Dowdle’s Quarantine.
Mutilated bodies, shared delusions, and guttural terror. I shudder to think about the last four years of living. What could have lasted only a few weeks – remember when the lockdowns were expected to last just a fortnight? – turned into four years lost. The mere notion that the pandemic...

Is Paramount+ cleaning house?
It seems that every scripted series that doesn't have Taylor Sheridan's name attached is getting the pink slip.
The latest series to get canceled is Joe Pickett, which recently wrapped its sophomore run on the service.
We get it: The streaming bubble has burst.
Amid the SAG-AFTRA strike and coming off the WGA strike, some controversial decisions have been made across the whole breadth of the business.
But this latest cancellation from Paramount+ hurts, mainly because the series didn't waste a single scene.
Paramount+ recently caught heat when it promoted the season finale as the series finale before walking the footage back.
These things happen.
It happened with Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on Max, which went on to get renewed, so maybe it was a mistake.
But it doesn't get away from the fact that we're losing a gem of a series that delivered on many fronts.

Joe Pickett will not return for a third season. Paramount+ has canceled the series, starring Michael Dorman, after two seasons.
The series was originally commissioned by Spectrum in early 2021, which announced prior to the debut of season two that it would be shutting down Spectrum Originals. Paramount+ had the streaming rights to the series and seasons 1 and 2 will continue to be available on the service.
Joe Pickett followed a dedicated game warden (Dorman) and his family as they navigated the shifting sociopolitical climate of a small rural town on the verge of economic collapse.
In the most recent second season, the Wyoming game warden, played by Dorman, discovers a hunter murdered in the mountains and realizes his is just one of a series of gruesome murders. To solve the case and catch the killer, Joe must navigate a radical anti-hunting activist, a ghoulish set of twins living off the grid and his own tortured past.

“Joe Pickett” has been canceled at Paramount+ after two seasons, Variety has learned.
The drama series was originally commissioned by Charter Communications’ Spectrum Originals in early 2021. The first season aired on that platform beginning in December 2021, with Spectrum announcing a second season order in February 2022.
However, Spectrum Originals head Katherine Pope was named head of Sony Pictures Television in July 2022, with Charter announcing it would be shutting down Spectrum Originals operations in August of that year. Paramount+ has the streaming rights to the series, as it is produced by Paramount Television Studios, with Season 2 airing on the streaming service beginning in June 2023. Both seasons will remain available on the service for the time being.
“Joe Pickett” followed the title character, a Wyoming game warden played by Michael Dorman, as he investigates crimes in and around the town of Saddlestring. The series is based on the Joe Pickett novels written by C.J. Box.

This story about Michael Shannon and his two recent projects, “George & Tammy” and “Waco: The Aftermath” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A tweet recently circulated asking, “Who is an actor who may not be the main character, but always makes any movie better?” The answer for many was Michael Shannon, whose tense, often explosive performances frequently inspire listicles ranking his roles by their degree of creepy terror, such as the gentle paranoia of Curtis Laforche in “Take Shelter” and the repressive fanaticism of Nelson Van Alden in “Boardwalk Empire.”
Now the 48-year-old actor has moved center stage with standout lead performances in two Showtime limited series: “George & Tammy,” in which he plays the outsize country rabble-rouser George Jones with masterful vulnerability (opposite Jessica Chastain) and “Waco: The Aftermath,” capturing the slow-burn inner turmoil of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

This April 19 marks the 30th anniversary of the violent end of the siege of the religious sect, the Branch Davidians lead by David Koresh. Eighty people died in the fire set in their compound outside of Waco by members of the cult after law enforcement had attempted to flush them out by introducing tear gas. The standoff had begun 51 days earlier when Koresh and members of this sect ambushed Atf agents who had arrived at the complex to executed federal warrants on charges of illegal manufacture and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Four Atf agents were killed along with six members of the sect.

Thirty years after the deadly standoff between federal law enforcement and the Branch Davidian sect in Waco, Texas, even the most fundamental facts of the tragedy remain contested. Both sides insist the other initiated the initial volley of gunfire that killed four agents and six sectarians. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms insists David Koresh and his followers later set fire to their compound, killing another 48 adults and 28 children in an act of mass suicide. The surviving Branch Davidians maintain that the FBI was the aggressor, and the deadly fire resulted from the Atf’s decision to deploy stun grenades and tear gas.

From Freddy Krueger to Annie Wilkes, iconic villains with memorable backstories are a hallmark of popular horror media, but there’s more than one way to terrify audiences. For example, some horror flicks task viewers with unmasking the mysterious antagonist alongside our main characters in scare-centric whodunit mashups.
And with the continued success of the Scream franchise proving that audiences are hungry for more mystery alongside the traditional blood and guts, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six lesser-known whodunit horror flicks for your viewing pleasure.
Since this list is meant to highlight underseen scary movies, we won’t be including more popular whodunits like the original Friday the 13th, Happy Death Day or any of the aforementioned Scream films. However, feel free to comment below with your own favorite whodunit horror flicks if you think we missed a particularly underrated one.

Michael Shannon and John Leguizamo will reprise their roles from Paramount Network’s 2018 limited series “Waco” in “American Tragedies: Waco – The Trials,” MTV Entertainment Studios announced Monday. The follow-up series will explore the legal fallout after the tragic events that took place in Waco, Texas, in 1993.
Waco was the longest gun battle in U.S. law enforcement in history, as a small religious community known as the Branch Davidians led by David Koresh withstood a raid by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (Atf). Four Atf agents and six civilians were left dead and dozens more were wounded during the battle. A 51-day standoff ensued, and the conflict ended after an FBI assault led to a fire that engulfed the compound, killing 76 men, women and children.
Leguizamo received an Emmy nomination for his “Waco” role as Jacob Vasquez, an Atf agent who blows the whistle on the disastrous siege.

A three-time Emmy nominee recognized this year for the first time in almost 20 years, Waco’s John Leguizamo dove head first into Paramount Network’s limited series, investigating the psychology of David Koresh’s Branch Davidians, and those who fell under their spell.
With this true-crime series from John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle—based on two first-hand accounts of 1993’s 51-day standoff between the Atf, the FBI and Koresh’s compound-dwelling religious faction—the celebrated actor was tasked with portraying Jacob Vazquez, a fictionalized version of the undercover Atf agent sent in to infiltrate Koresh’s Waco, Texas organization.
Making a strong impression with Emmy voters over the course of three of the series’ six episodes, Leguizamo’s challenge was to believably portray Vazquez’ arc, from a skeptic and direct antagonist to the Branch Davidians to someone who, to some degree, believed. “It’s my whole transformation of going...

After the audience at the Atx Television Festival watched an initial episode of Waco, actors Taylor Kitsch, Julia Garner, Paul Sparks and show creators/writers Drew Dowdle and John Erick Dowdle took the stage to talk about Paramount Network’s limited series. When asked how it is to watch the series with an audience, Kitsch immediately had an answer.
