As wonderful as X-Men ’97 has been, even the most devoted Marvel Zombie has to admit that the gold standard of superhero animation remains Batman: The Animated Series. Created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, the show told some of the all-time greatest stories about the Dark Knight, and even launched an ongoing universe with Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Static Shock.
So when Warner Bros. announced Batman: Caped Crusader from Timm, fans took notice, especially with J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves on board as producers. Despite a near disaster when Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav declined to distribute the completed series, as is his wont, the show found a home on Amazon Prime Video.
Even better, we now know when the series is premiering on the streamer: Aug. 1. We also have our first look at the characters and setting of Batman: The Caped Crusader, which blends...

It's been a long time coming but we've finally got our first real look at "Batman: Caped Crusader." The upcoming animated series from "Batman: The Animated Series" co-creator Bruce Timm and producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves has encountered a few setbacks on its journey to release, but is now set to debut on August 1, 2024, on Amazon's Prime Video.
Details about "Batman: Caped Crusader" were first revealed at DC FanDome back in 2021, where we were promised a show that would tell a whole new story rather than continuing where "Btas" left off. Timm also characterized the show as "more 'Batman: [The] Animated Series' than 'Batman: [The] Animated Series,'" revealing that "Caped Crusader" would return to the "original principles" of the '90s show but would have no limitations in terms of "adult content," "violence," and "adult themes." During its 1992 to 1995, "Btas" had to carefully navigate the Fox censors, who...

Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, will soon become a TV series on Prime Video.
Prime Video has given a series order to Criminal, nearly a year after it was put on the development fast-track. A writers’ room for the project was put together early last year, but the WGA strike brought development to a halt. Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” Ed Brubaker wrote the script for the pilot and will co-showrun the series with Jordan Harper (Hightown). Both will also executive produce alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

Nearly two years ago, HBO Max and Cartoon Network ordered a new Batman animated series from Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves. Fans were excited about a new Batman series, especially with the involvement of Bruce Timm, but the series unfortunately didn’t survive the axe of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who scrapped it along with many others. Thankfully, Amazon has come to the rescue and given Batman: Caped Crusader a two-season order.
When Batman: Caped Crusader was cancelled as a cost-cutting move, Warner Bros. Animation started shopping the show to other streaming services. The series is billed as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology” that will utilize “state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.“

Exclusive: Amazon Studios is finalizing deals for Criminal, a TV adaptation of Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips’ bestselling crime comic book series, sources tell Deadline.
Details are scarce but the project, written by Brubaker, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on his award-winning comic book series. I hear a writers room for the potential series is up and running. A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Nick Pepper, Amazon Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Wholly Owned, and his lieutenant Matt King, Head of Tentpole, Genre and Universe Development of wholly owned content, are believed to have championed bringing in Criminal for development. As President of Legendary Television, Pepper signed Brubaker into a development deal there in 2019 and, along with EVP Development King, put Criminal in development at the indie studio, which is expected to...

Next month, writers Tom King and Phil Hester are teaming up to bring back one of Gotham City’s oldest protectors. No, not Batman. Heck, I’m not even talking about the original Green Lantern and his cabbie sidekick Doiby Dickles.
I mean Slam Bradley, the hard-drinking, hard-talking Pi. Originally a lead character in Detective Comics, Bradley has been a mainstay in Batman’s orbit since the ’30s, and has even headlined several series. He’ll get that chance again as King and Hester make him the lead in Gotham City: Year One.
Working alongside illustrator Eric Gapstur, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Clayton Cowles, King and Hester tell the origin story of DC’s famously crime-riddled city. At the center of this tale is Bradley, who is on the case of Helen Wayne, a Gotham City heiress who goes missing. Bradley’s investigation will uncover deep corners of rot within the city,...

A new Superman number one issue? Oh, go on then. One with a connection to the fabled Crisis on Infinite Earths? Definitely go on then. Mark Russell writing and Mike Allred drawing? You had me at Superman. This book genuinely intrigued me when I saw it announced. Nice to have something a little different, a little risky. Superman can be many things, the focus of many different kinds of stories, and this book promises to embrace that principle.
Let’s take a look.
1985, a momentous year in DC history. The year of the Crisis. Superman, a pre-Crisis Superman (The pre-Crisis Superman?) returns to Lois and Jonathan as the world dies. We are, however, getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s travel back to 1963 Smallville, and a young Clark is growing up on the Kent Smallville farm, already a budding...

Tim Sale, the acclaimed comic book artist behind classic DC Comics such as “Batman: The Long Halloween” and “Superman for All Seasons,” died on Thursday, DC Comics confirmed in a press release. He was 66.
DC Comics publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee announced that Sale had been admitted to the hospital due to health issues on Monday. The cause of death has not been announced.
In a statement for DC Comics, Lee said: “The entire DC family is heartbroken at the news of Tim’s passing. Tim was an extraordinary artist, who was masterful at storytelling and panel layouts and his compositions were second to none. I was always so impressed and inspired by his use of lighting and shadows which infused his work with foreboding gravitas and dramatic noir sensibilities.”

This article contains The Batman spoilers. You can our spoiler-free review here.
The Batman introduces DC Comics fans to a whole new take on the Dark Knight and Gotham City, courtesy of director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson. It also brings new version of rogues like Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Penguin (Colin Farrell), the Riddler (Paul Dano), and Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). The Batman has also arguably delivered the definitive version of Detective Jim Gordon, who is played brilliantly by Jeffrey Wright.
With all of these characters comes decades of DC history. As you might expect, that means Reeves’ film is filled to the brim with Easter eggs, references, and homages to huge Batman moments from the comics. But it also has a surprising amount of callbacks to some of Hollywood’s greatest films — as well as grisly real-world events, especially when it comes to this take on the Riddler.

You know the scene: the Batman stands before a gang of skull-faced goons who think this weirdo in a costume is a joke. “Who the hell are you supposed to be?” asks their leader, who’s about to find out, one punch at a time, that Robert Pattinson’s unhinged, hyper-violent Dark Knight is no laughing matter.
“How it was initially staged was the guy says, ‘Who are you?’ And Batman says, ‘I’m vengeance,’ and then beats everybody up,” reveals a much friendlier Pattinson, who cracks up while explaining how he helped tweak the scene to make it even more horrifying. “I said to Rob [Alonzo, second unit director and supervising stunt coordinator], ‘I really want to say it into the guy’s face when he’s basically dead.’”
Savage beatings are one way this Batman wants to “spread around [his] mythology,” Pattinson tells Den of Geek by phone on a cold, gloomy day in January. “It’s not theatrical,...

Many mysteries surround The Batman‘s main villain. The movie not only introduces a version of the Riddler unlike any we’ve ever seen, donning a mask and armed with duct tape, but one who also has a deep connection and obsession with Bruce Wayne. What are the ties that bind these two characters together in the film? We don’t know the answer just yet, but trailers have made it clear it goes all the way back to Bruce’s parents and some long buried secret that the Riddler will dig up to destroy his opponent’s life.
But does the Riddler’s plan go even deeper than that? The newest trailer for The Batman teases a catastrophe in Gotham that could change the city forever — and drive the storytelling of director Matt Reeves’ potential sequels. This disaster is also a callback to a major Riddler moment from the...

Joshua Williamson has had his hands in just about every big DC story for the last five years. One of the longest-tenured Flash writers ever, Williamson has by necessity been in the middle of every time the DC multiverse tried to burst back into canon over the last five years. After all, you can’t have a Crisis without a Flash beat or three.
But now, Williamson is getting the keys to the bus. Infinite Frontier #0 kicks off the post-Metal, post-Future State new status quo for the DC Universe in March. That status quo builds off of DC’s new multiversal mantra: everything happened and anything is possible. We had a chance to talk with him about what that means on both ends – what the new Dcu is growing out of, and what’s coming in the future.

How does one sit down and criticize the perfect show? The 2020 Emmys have been kind to HBO’s “Watchmen” and for good reason: showrunner Damon Lindelof and his team delivered an intricate and diverse superhero story that elevates the medium.
In over thirty interviews and awards speeches, “Watchmen” showrunner Damon Lindelof and writer Cord Jefferson have appropriately praised Ta-Nehisi Coates, Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore for inspiring the show. They have also thanked their producers, their fellow writers, their agents, the studio heads at HBO, and many more.
There’s just one name that they keep skipping over: Darwyn Cooke.
Lindelof and Jefferson have been awarded the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Special with “This Extraordinary Being,” a solid mindbender that careens through the haunted past of a character named Hooded Justice. DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes wrapped up with a 30-minute discussion with director Matt Reeves about The Batman, and it did not disappoint. Introduced by Robert Pattinson and moderated by DC FanDome host Aisha Tyler, the fast-talking Reeves covered quite a bit over the course of the panel, including giving fans a pretty clear idea of what sort of story they’re in for when The Batman debuts in October of next year.

Director Matt Reeves has confirmed that in addition to the 'noir' take of DC Comics' "Batman: The Long Halloween", the main inspiration for his upcoming live-action feature "The Batman", is also based on writer/illustrator Darwyn Cooke's DC Comics graphic novel title "Batman: Ego" (2000):
"...'Batman' blames himself for the killing of a family whose father was a henchman of the 'Joker'. Racked with guilt and losing large amounts of blood he returns to the 'Batcave' where 'Bruce Wayne' (?!) confronts Batman.
" The two argue about who he really is, what his purpose is, what methods he should be using to put an end to crime and his true motivation for doing so..."
"I wanted to get into the mindset of the character, and I wanted to think of the psychology," said Reeves.
"For me, I think one of the cool deep dive ones was 'Ego'. He's confronting the beast...

Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman is one of the great bits of superhero movie casting. And today during DC FanDome we got a very small glimpse of the new iteration of the anti-hero when The Batman trailer was unveiled in all its eerie glory.
The Batman director Matt Reeves introduced the panel and revealed that the film would work as an origin for Batman’s rogues gallery including Kravitz’s character.
“Selina isn’t yet Catwoman” Reeves told host Aisha Taylor. So, what do we know about her. Well, it’s the early days of the rogue, and just like Bruce she’s in the early days of her career before she becomes the iconic jewel thief we know and love.
We only got to see a little of her costume which does feature the short, spiked ears that fans immediately connect to the Darwyn Cooke iteration of Selina, and Kravitz...

There’s a Ton of DC movies coming to HBO Max in July, but they aren’t necessarily the ones you expect. While the service is still dealing with a number of its most high profile titles still cycling through previously agreed on streaming deals at competitors, they’re bringing in a lot of their lesser known titles to fill in the blanks. One thing they’re doing for the moment is extending the runs of Dceu “favorites” like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Suicide Squad through December.
But don’t sleep on the dozens of others on the way.
For one thing, there’s the complete set of Christopher Reeve Superman movies. While really, only two of those are any good, the first one is the greatest Superman movie of all time, and arguably the best superhero movie ever made. And while Superman III is generally quite bad,...

CW: Sexual harassment, grooming
This week saw a wave of sexual misconduct allegations against men of varying positions in the comic book industry. The first came from artist Aviva Artzy, followed up by artist and writer Kate Leth, with support from the wife of the late Darwyn Cooke, Marsha Cooke, and convention organizer Andrea Demonakos, accusing Cameron Stewart of grooming underage girls. Grooming is when an older person establishes a relationship with a usually underage one, with the intention of developing a sexual relationship in the future. As a result of this, Stewart, the one time Batgirl co-writer and Seaguy artist, was let go from a previously unannounced DC project and had a variant cover for Image’s Ice Cream Man canceled.
Later, former Dark Horse editor Brendan Wright was accused by former colleague Bekah Caden of an extended campaign of sexual harassment and stalking. Wright left Dark Horse in...

With the big day fast approaching we are all prepping like mad for Christmas. I thought I would take this opportunity to maybe try and help out with some Christmas gift ideas for the comic geek in your life. In the past I have been accused of being difficult to shop for as a comic geek at Christmas. Now if I wasn’t a very nice person I would say me being hard to shop for is their fault. They aren’t going to go to a Lcs, or even go on a comic shops website. They aren’t going to trawl through pages of eBay listings, so basically they are down to Amazon.
In the past I have come up with a list of trade paperbacks and books to be passed round between family. I make it clear I don’t want them all. Any selection from the list will be enough for Christmas.

Watchmen episode 6 introduces Nelson Gardner, the hero known as Captain Metropolis. Here's why he's important.
This article contains major Watchmen spoilers.
Watchmen episode 6, “This Extraordinary Being” focuses primarily on Will Reeves, his journey to becoming Hooded Justice, and his quest to stamp out the Ku Klux Klan and their white supremacist plans. It’s a powerful episode that begins in 1938 and spans approximately the next decade of Reeves’ life, covering key moments from his vigilante career. But in a surprising moment, it also introduces another character from the book and member of the Minutemen: Nelson Gardner, also known as Captain Metropolis (played to perfection by Limitless and What We Do in the Shadows’ Jake McDorman). So who is Nelson Gardner, and what do we know about Captain Metropolis? We’re here to lay it all out for you.
As has been with any other Watchmen “legacy character” we’ve seen on screen,...

BizarroTV will be a mix of live action, animation, and puppetry bringing weirdness like Ambush Bug and Space Cabbie to DC Universe.
DC Universe announced a number of new projects at New York Comic Con, and the most stunning announcement is probably BizarroTV.
The show, named after the backwards-talking supervillain (?) from the Superman family, is planned as an anthology series that will feature a live action and animation mix with, “a showcase of experimental styles and creative voices and visions.” So...Liquid Television but for DC superheroes. That's a very different approach to take with a superhero show, but not an entirely surprising one for the streaming service that birthed the absurdist masterpiece that was Doom Patrol.
The show will feature less popular heroes like Ambush Bug (imagine Deadpool with the Beyonder’s powers and general temperament), Space Cabbie (exactly what it says on the label), the Creeper,...

One of my previous reviews was for the first issue of Superman: Up in the Sky, a limited series which is essentially collecting together all the new material from the Wal-Mart 100 page DC exclusive comics. It’s very good by the way, so check it out. This book is the Batman version of that. So same as Tom King was told to tell Superman stories that throw away the need to be a genius in continuity, so Brian Michael Bendis was given licence to do the same with Batman. Write His Batman, stripped of the decades of Bat-continuity and pointedly new reader friendly. You can guess how much DC wanted to these books to do well by the fact they put such superstar talent as Tom King and Bendis on the books. Quality certainly tells, no doubt.

Acclaimed comic book and television writer Ed Brubaker has signed a multi-year overall deal with Legendary Television Studios. Under the pact, Brubaker will adapt as well as collaborate with fellow television creators in the adaptation of some of his most iconic creator-owned properties. Additionally, he will develop original content for Legendary.
Brubaker is one of the most celebrated writers in the history of comics, receiving numerous accolades and winning both the Eisner and Harvey Awards for Best Writer five times. While writing for DC Comics, Brubaker revamped Catwoman with artist Darwyn Cooke, and was the co-creator of Gotham Central. His groundbreaking run on Marvel’s Captain America included the creation of the “Winter Soldier,” who has played a pivotal role in the Marvel movie franchise.

"Knightmares" continues with the Question picking apart Batman's greatest fears.
Tom King's Batman has hit just about every aspect of the Dark Knight's character. We got the hyper-competent badass planner in "I am Suicide" and the brawler in "I am Bane." We saw the sprawling breadth and surprising depth of his Rogues Gallery demonstrated multiple times with moving stories about Kite Man and Poison Ivy or action yarns like "The War of Jokes & Riddles."
Batman has been firmly planted within the greater DC Universe multiple times with the failed wedding to Catwoman and its lead up. And we've had a sneaky ton of Bruce Wayne, from him eating a cheeseburger with a knife and fork he brought from home with the Robins early in the book to 12 Angry Batmen or "The Origin of Bruce Wayne." That cheeseburger thing is an underrated high point for this comic,...

While we await any concrete news on The Batman – who’s going to be starring in it would be nice to know, for one – director Matt Reeves has engaged with fans on Twitter and revealed what comic books from the Caped Crusader’s 79 year history he rates as his favorites.
Taking to the social media platform, here’s what he shared:
There are many… I love Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Ego… Many others… Neal Adams is awesome… Love the original Kane and Finger… I could go on…!
Most of Reeves’ choices will be very familiar to Bat-fans, as they’re often cited as being amongst the best Batman comics in the character’s long history. Several of them have also previously served as loose inspirations for the Dark Knight’s on-screen adventures. For instance, Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One informed parts of Batman Begins, while the...

For me, it always makes for an interesting read whenever you see the immediate fallout explored after a major event or story arc concludes. Really, I like to be assured that there are consequences and actually happen to be a comic book reader that’s not opposed to change.
Well, in the next issue of Teen Titans, expect to see how the recently concluded “Super Sons of Tomorrow” continues to affect some of DC’s most popular adolescent heroes. And yes, we’re talking about the very same tale that included the awesomely insane version of Tim Drake from an alternate timeline.
Thanks to DC Entertainment, we’re able to exclusively present some of the first images taken from the next chapter in the ongoing saga, each of which can be viewed in the accompanying gallery.

This week, we brought word that Dark Knight III: The Master Race would be undergoing a slight name change upon its release as a collected edition, effectively being rechristened as Batman: The Dark Knight: The Master Race. Well, it appears that trend will continue with a companion book set to arrive this September.
If you’ve been keeping up with the threequel to Frank Miller’s immortal classic The Dark Knight Returns – or at least news pertaining to it – you’re likely aware that this limited series has seen an obscene amount of variant covers, particularly for the first couple issues. Normally, stuff like this appears as supplemental material in the back of its relevant trade, but if that were the case with this story, the book would’ve been as thick as the Yellow Pages.

Comics creator Thom Zahler is known for his entertaining and insightful romantic and relationship comics, particularly Love and Capes, a superhero romance that starts with Superman-adjacent hero The Crusader deciding to tell his non-superpowered girlfriend the truth about his dual identities; and Long Distance, a tale about a couple who meet in an airport and have to figure out how to successfully have, you guessed it, a long distance relationship. Both books contain a healthy serving of shrewd commentary on human interactions and romance, but don’t sacrifice the fun of humor or pop culture references to the need for drama.
I appreciate these stories not only in themselves, but also because sometimes the medium of comics as a whole seems to be overshadowed by the all-encompassing, never-ending, and dramatically violent superhero stories of the Big Two, Marvel and DC. Don’t get me wrong – I love me some...

On the way to RocCon, the Rochester Comic Convention, my cousin John gave me a comics-related clipping that his mom, my Aunt Carolyn, asked him to pass along. It was from the Catholic Courier and it was a positive review of Darwyn Cooke’s graphic novel The New Frontier.
This week’s column was supposed to be about RocCon, but the clipping about The New Frontier sent me in another direction. So instead let’s focus on purpose, Geek Culture and the Catholic Courier clipping.
But first a little background on Darwyn Cooke’s The New Frontier. This graphic novel was originally released as a six-issue miniseries in 2004. The Catholic News Service review describes it this way:
Set in the 1950s and early 1960s, the novel…examines issues of racism, immigration, the blacklisting of accused subversives and the morality of the Vietnam War.
More important, in The New Frontier creator...

Much like Mark Millar a couple of years ago, creative types and studio bods seem to be champing at the bit to develop the Northern Irish writer’s work: the recent Netflix take on Marvel’s Punisher character was clearly drawn from his seminal Max run and proved so popular that a solo series now seems to be in the works. As many of you know Darwyn Cooke, beloved comic book industry icon, passed away Saturday May 14th after a battle with lung cancer. He was 53 years old. I could go into all of the facts, his accomplishments and merits in animation, illustration, and writing, but many of you already know them all or could easily gain access to them on the plethora of websites covering this tragedy. So in lieu of listing off his accomplishments, I’m going to talk about what Darwyn Cooke means to me.
My earliest memories of Darwyn Cooke’s work was from Marvel’s X-Statix. Peter Milligan, Mike and Laura Allred crafted an incredible pop art critique of the direction we were going in our fame obsessed culture using mutants as the metaphor of choice. One of the artists that also worked on this was Darwyn Cooke. My younger brother James was not quite a...

It's going to be awhile before we get another Justice League movie, but the DC animated movie universe is worth checking out.
In 2007, DC’s animation department announced that they were creating a line of direct-to-video, feature-length movies free from many of the constraints of regular television. It was a controversial move, mostly because the most recent forays into animation from DC had been really well received by fans - Justice League Unlimited and Teen Titans had just ended, and fans were eager for more series set in the DC Animated Universe, not stand alone adaptations of comic stories.
Despite the initial trepidation, most of them have been a success. They do follow some general rules, though: for early entries, the Star Trek movie rule applies, where every other one is good. This pattern stops holding true around Gods & Monsters - after that, they're mostly at least adequate,...

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

If you’re passionate about Geek Culture, you probably should (1) promote it by bringing new people into the fold, and (2) prune your collection to keep it robust and manageable. I’m typically pretty good at the first and pretty bad at the second. But last weekend I tried something new and I had an experience that was better than expected.
First, a little background. I grew up in Auburn, a small town in New York State’s Finger Lakes region. I was surrounded by about a million Italian relatives, a downtown that could have been the basis for Smallville, and an outstanding library. It was called the Seymour Library and was built around the turn of century by the firm of Carrere and Hastings. You may know them from another one of their works – the New York Public Library.
My mom led us on weekly excursions to return and borrow books.
