John Sayles celebrates the moment the blues gave birth to rock n’ roll with this affectionate musical drama set in the early fifties. The movie features a solid cast including Danny Glover, Stacy Keach, Mary Steenburgen and Gary Clark Jr. as Sonny Blake, the vagabond guitarist who shakes up the sleepy town of Harmony, Alabama.

I try to be unbiased, and for the most part, I’m pretty successful. I’m only human though, and occasionally I’m swayed by who might be in the film. Some actors bring a disdain with them that the only hope of me getting past my biases is an undeniably good film. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I can give a pass to a pretty mediocre film if it features someone I like. This one has my kryptonite for being objective, Ms. Rose McGowan. I’ve always dug her in just about anything she’s done. Even films that were not so great for the above stated reasons. She definitely has a presence. I’ve seen her evolve from an evil ingenue in “Jawbreaker”, to being a part of the mainstream lexicon in “Charmed”, and now transitioning from younger to...

People accuse old-school horror films of being emotionally retarded, in that so many of them reflect a permanently juvenile outlook on the world - sex bad, purity good, and it's so god damned cathartic when those whining teenagers get hacked up like cattle in a slaughterhouse, mkay? But at least your Saws and Final Destinations and countless remakes in 3D are honest with themselves about who they're screening for and what they're offering. The one thing that stymies Victor Salva's Rosewood Lane is it aspires to be more than an adolescent fantasy; it feels as if it was written by someone who wanted very badly to make a shameless piece of pandering, but just point blank refused to admit it to himself. So heroine Sonny Blake...

Late-night radio doc, Sonny Blake, is haunted by her past. We know this because Rosewood Lane has great chunks of its svelte 92 minute runtime devoted to telling us so.
She has Daddy-demons and bad-boyfriend demons and, potentially/possibly/maybe, a demon-demon to battle. That’s a lot of demons. Fortunately, life as the 21st Century Jack Killian has armed her well. Doctor Sonny believes there is no such thing as an accident. She tells her callers this – often. And she’s going back to the ‘burbs to confront her past. Nothing scares Sonny – she’s a can-do kind of gal.
Flash-forward a day, and a quick unpack, and Sonny (Rose McGowan) is scared of her scary paperboy (Daniel Ross Owens). We know he is scary because her next door neighbor tells us so. And dogs chase his bike down the street. That the only concrete scary thing about the paperboy,...

★☆☆☆☆ Jeepers Creepers (2001) director Victor Salva is back with Rosewood Lane (2011), an allegedly petrifying picture of a seemingly idyllic neighbourhood, starring Rose McGowan, Lauren Valez of Dexter fame and Laura Palmer's dad, Ray Wise. McGowan plays Sonny Blake, a talk-radio psychologist who, following the death of her alcoholic father, moves into his house on Rosewood Lane. Sonny is warned by her creepy neighbour to stay away from the local paper-boy as he is a cunning and dangerous sociopath.

Rosewood Lane
Stars: Rose McGowan, Bill Fagerbakke, Ray Wise, Lauren Vélez, Lin Shaye, Lesley-Anne Down, Rance Howard, Daniel Ross Owens | Written and Directed by Victor Salva
Moving into a strange neighbourhood can be a weird experience, but it never helps when the local paperboy appears to be controlling people with a reign of terror. Done in an interesting way this could be an interesting tale for this film starring Rose McGowan but one of the biggest problems though it could be one of the most annoying stories I’ve ever seen, all because of an attempt to make the main character seem crazy, yet giving too much proof that the events she’s experiencing are actually happening.
Rose McGowan stars as Sonny Blake who decides to move back into the family home a year after her father’s untimely death. It’s not long though before she’s warned to...

I haven’t been following this particular motion picture too closely, but I’m definitely a little curious about it. Salva is pretty much hit and miss with me, though the first “Jeepers Creepers” is a pretty badass horror flick. The sequel, well, not so much. “Rosewood Lane” has a secret weapon in Rose McGowan, an actress who should at least have a small role in every movie ever made. And if she insists on having a machine gun for a leg in each one, I’m totally down with that. In fact, I totally encourage it. Here’s what the flick is all about: Rose McGowan plays Doctor Sonny Blake, a radio talk show psychiatrist, who moves back to her childhood home after her alcoholic father dies. Once back in her old neighborhood she discovers the local paperboy is a frightening and cunning young sociopath that targeted her father and now targets her.

Radio talk show psychiatrist Sonny Blake (Rose McGowan) decides to move back to her childhood home in Stillwater after her alcoholic father dies. But her new neighborhood is not what it seems, as the local paperboy is a cunning sociopath who stalked her father, and now has his black eyes set on her. He even goes as far as calling into her show and turns innocent nursery rhymes into macabre omens of things to come. Her next door neighbor confines in her that he believes this paperboy killed her dad and is visiting her to deliver more than just the news of the day.
The police don’t have enough evidence to do anything about it, her co-worker thinks she is coming to grips with her traumatic family upbringing, and her boyfriend thinks it’s a figment of her imagination until he gets shoved down the cellar stairs and ends...

Rose McGowan has her hands full with the paperboy in the first trailer for Rosewood Lane, but this doesn’t have anything to do with overdue payment for the paper route. The dogs know the secret. Do you?
Radio talk show therapist Sonny Blake (McGowan) moves back to her childhood home after her alcoholic father dies, which seems kind of weird when you consider all the old memories that linger in a home where you grew up. Anyway, it’s a nice, quiet neighborhood… except for the paperboy, who has all Sonny’s neighbors living in terror. Even if you ignore the freaky eye thing he does, he’s still the type of guy you want to keep an eye on.
Rosewood Lane is written and directed by Victor Salva, the same guy that brought us Jeepers Creepers, so be prepared for a few chills and thrills.

Rosewood Lane is about to make its world debut at the Screamfest Film Festival in La. To get people excited about the upcoming thriller from Victor Salva, Shock-till-you-Drop is releasing the brand-new trailer. I love star Rose McGowan and I was thoroughly entertained with what Salva did with Jeepers Creepers, but this trailer doesn’t get me overly excited. I guess I should re-phrase myself. The trailer is effective at displaying some thrilling moments from the film. I just can’t help but get the feeling that I have seen this film before. We’ll have to see after this weekend when reviews start pouring in from the fest. You can judge the new trailer for yourself below.

Aussie actor, Jon Blake dies at 52 after long years in bed
He was once hailed Australia’s “next Mel Gibson” while at the peak of his career in the late 1980s. But an unfortunate road accident had left Jon Blake permanently incapacitated as he was described in ‘near-vegetative state” until his death Sunday. He was 52.
Blake appeared in a number of TV series including soap opera The Restless Years and Anzacs.
Tim Burton's Dark Shadows will not be in 3D

Australian actor Gary Sweet has spoken of his sadness over the death of his friend Jon Blake, who passed away 25 years after he was left brain-damaged in a horrific car crash.
Blake died at the age of 52 on Sunday after suffering complications from pneumonia.
The popular actor's career was cut short in 1986 when he was involved in a car smash while filming The Lighthorsemen in the South Australian desert, which left him permanently brain-damaged and dependent on his mother Mascot to look after him.
Sweet, who starred alongside Blake in the film and was by his friend's bedside following the accident, found Blake's deterioration "devastating".
He recalls, "We got on very well... we used to sit around and shoot the breeze, and he was very popular with the ladies. (After the accident) we tried anything just to get him to wake up. It was quite devastating."
Another The Lighthorsemen co-star, Peter Phelps, adds, "We had formed a really good friendship in The Lighthorsemen, going up to the hills and to the pub together. There was always some hope that with the mystery of a brain injury there was a chance. I hope there was no pain (in his death)."
Actor Tony Bonner adds, "It's a blessing of some kind that John is not travelling in any more pain. I hope that he is in a peaceful place now."
Blake's funeral will be held later this week (ends05Jun11).

In a 2010 issue of Filmink, we ran an article in our popular ‘What's Wrong With The Australian Film Industry' column revisiting the life of Australian actor Jon Blake whose career tragically halted to a complete stop after a fatal accident. With Blake having just passed away, we thought we'd republish his story as it's one that's absolutely worth remembering... On December 1, 1986, the world was Jon Blake's oyster. He'd just wrapped shooting on a big budget war film, The Lighthorsemen, in which he played the lead, and he had a number of other films awaiting release.
