The first season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" was lauded for its back-to-basics approach. Every episode was just that, an episode, with self-contained stories, characters' journeys, and messages. This episodic approach mixed a healthy dose of optimism brings the series more in line with the "Star Trek" ethos than its parent series, "Star Trek: Discovery."
Of course, not everything is like the old days. During the initial 1960s run of "Star Trek," plus the franchise's "Next Generation" heyday in the 80s-90s, seasons were much longer. The first ever season of "Star Trek" ran 29 episodes, while six out of seven "Next Generation" seasons had 26 episodes (minus the truncated 20-episode season 2).
"Strange New Worlds" season 1, on the other hand, had only 10 episodes. Nowadays, streaming is the name of the game, not syndication. Since Paramount+ doesn't need a high volume of episodes to endlessly rerun as networks did for syndication, quantity is less a concern.

“The Society”

TV show cancellations are devastating enough on their own. But when a series has already been renewed, then gets unceremoniously axed? That’s eat-ice-cream-straight-outta-the-gallon levels of heartbreak.
Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, one of the TV industry’s (many) new normals is a wave of reversed renewals: Several series that were already picked up for additional seasons have since been cancelled, given how the pandemic has affected their production schedules and budgets, among other factors.

Anticipation is one of TV’s most underrated attractions. Whether it’s the weekly break between episodes, the months between seasons, or even long-gestating payoffs in will-they-won’t-they romantic couplings, the wait can not only elevate the experience; it can become its own form of entertainment.
The only period of time when this doesn’t apply is the limbo after fans have finished whatever’s put in front of them and await word on if there will be more. With a cancellation, all that built-up excitement can come to an abrupt, heartbreaking end, while a renewal can mean one more year of safety, before being asked to go through it all over again.
But at least you were safe. Part of what’s made the recent string of Covid-cited cancellations so crushing is that series like “Stumptown” on ABC and “I’m Sorry” on truTV had already been renewed. They weren...

“Stumptown” has been canceled by ABC after one season due to Covid-related circumstances, TheWrap has learned.
The Cobie Smulders-led drama was picked up for a second season in May, but on Wednesday the network was forced to reverse its decision due to scheduling concerns, according to an individual familiar with the matter. The studio behind the series, ABC Signature, will shop the show to other outlets.
The decision comes as the network’s fall schedule begins to take shape. Initially announced back in May with a scripted-heavy slate — including the planned second season of “Stumptown” — ABC has since shifted the schedule around as its various series have begun to return to production in recent weeks. Several of the unscripted and comedy series that have been able to resume filming have received premiere dates across the coming weeks, but none of the network’s dramas have yet been slated.

Amazon will not return to production on the big-budget limited series “Cortes y Moctezuma” due to increased production costs caused by Covid-19, the streamer said Thursday.

Amazon is not moving forward on its series about conquistador Hernan Cortes after the show was forced to shut down production due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Variety has confirmed.

Similar to how he did in 2015’s “Kill a Word,” Eric Church personifies emotions and troublesome states of mind in his new song “Crazyland.” The ballad, out Friday, is the third release off Church’s to-be-announced next album.
Church wrote the new track with Michael Heeney and Luke Laird (who himself released a solo song this week). Together, the songwriters ascribe human characteristics to words and phrases like “Sad,” “Regret,” “All My Fault,” and “I Told You So” — an accompanying lyric video emphasizes the words by capitalizing them like proper names.

Another TV series is getting the boot due to Covid-19.
TruTV has opted to cancel I'm Sorry, according to Deadline.
Previously renewed for a third season, the outlet notes that the series was two weeks into filming its third season when the shutdown that forced many TV shows to halt production hit.
“Due to circumstances created by Covid, we unfortunately cannot move forward with production on the third season of I’m Sorry,” the network said in a statement to Deadline.
“We admire Andrea Savage’s irreverent voice and fresh take on parenthood and are so proud of the show she and her cast and crew created. She was a great partner for many years and we truly wish everyone well.”
10 scripts had been written, which comprised the entire third season, but they will no longer see the light of day.

TruTV has reversed its decision to move ahead with a third season of Andrea Savage’s “I’m Sorry,” the network said Tuesday, attributing the decision to the effects of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

President Donald Trump’s attacks on the media were relatively tame at the latest coronavirus press briefing. He even gave some praise to PBS NewsHour‘s Yamiche Alcindor, someone he has previously attacked for asking “nasty” questions.
But on Monday Alcindor pressed the president about someone she recently interviewed who said his family got sick and did not take precautions “mainly because the president wasn’t taking it seriously.”

In the wake of the canceled 2020 SXSW Film Festival edition, Mailchimp has teamed with Oscilloscope and SXSW to launch Support the Shorts, a streaming event to view select short films from the fest for free on the Mailchimp Presents platform starting today. This will include over 70 short films, including the four festival winners and seven special recognition films which were recently announced.
“The night that SXSW was cancelled, filmmakers were wondering what to do next, and prominent members of the tight-knit film community offered support and a signal-boost — we wondered if we could do the same at scale. With this project, we’re trying to accomplish two things: to offer these artists a platform for exposure, and to provide access to some amazing work from artists I’m sure we’ll be hearing about for a long time to come. And, we’re excited that many people who weren’t planning on attending the festival,...

The cancelation of South by Southwest earlier this month was a huge blow to people across the industry, but short filmmakers whose work was set to debut there were particularly hard hit. With no festival, these filmmakers — many of them early in their careers — were suddenly without a platform to widely share their films. Now, boutique distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories and tech company Mailchimp have a solution: Today, they launched an online platform offering the vast majority of this year’s SXSW shorts online for free.
The site will feature around 75 films, all for free with no login required. Most are available now, with more to be added in the coming days.

Normally, the SXSW Film Festival award winners are handed out during a lively ceremony at the end of the first weekend, but this year required some improvisation. When the SXSW became the first major film event to cancel in the face of global pandemic, it was unclear what would happen to the hundreds of films and filmmakers primed for the late March festivities.
While many filmmakers were left struggling to figure out their next moves, the festival’s leadership opted to hand out awards to the films set to premiere at the festival, with the juries announced weeks earlier. SXSW Director of Film Janet Pierson and her team made the decision to “continue and expand to all the juried competitions, if the majority of the filmmakers opted in and juries were available.”

There is a thriving new genre of internet videos that document rap superstar Lil Uzi Vert descending from his celebrity perch to mingle with the people — walking (or running) among us, casually interfacing with his fans on sidewalks, at department stores, amusement parks, and festival grounds. While at SeriesFest 5 in Denver recently, I had the opportunity to attend a fascinating panel featuring showrunners and series creators under 40.
In addition to the creators and showrunners of This Close on Sundance and Joey Slamon of Tru TV's I'm Sorry was Laura Chinn of Pop TV's Florida Girls.
If not for that panel, I might have skipped over the latest Pop series, but Chinn was a hoot. Her series captures her essence, and Florida Girls is must-see comedy.
You might not know about Chinn, but she's been lurking behind some good shows including Grandfathered and The Mick.
With Florida Girls, she has taken her personal story and blown it up for the world to see. It's not exactly her life, but her life is its inspiration.
Before this review begins, let’s be clear. Reviewing comedy is not my thing, and I am not a comedian.
