Netflix’s strategic investment in Asian-Pacific filmmaking is yielding significant returns, with Apac members’ film viewing surging nearly 20% in 2024, according to data revealed at the company’s ongoing Apac film showcase in Tokyo.

The streaming giant disclosed that Apac films dominated its Non-English Film Weekly Top 10 charts more than content from any other region last year, with over 100 Apac titles breaking into these rankings. The robust performance underscores Netflix’s expanding footprint in the world’s most populous region.

“The average Netflix member watches seven movies every month,” noted Minyoung Kim, VP of Content for Apac (excluding India), highlighting film’s crucial role in the platform’s engagement strategy. For Netflix India specifically, films represent nearly half of all viewing time – among the highest film engagement rates globally. Indian titles have maintained an unbroken presence in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) list every week over the past year.

India’s youngest director and choreographer, Saurabh Prajapati, recently worked with the young actress Sharvari, known for her performances in films like Munjya and Maharaj. The duo collaborated for the Godrej Hair Professional Fashion Week show, which was entirely choreographed and designed by Saurabh.

Sharing more about the experience, he says,

“Working in a fashion show has always been very interesting and challenging. My job was to design the ramp sequence where all the supermodels walked, and Sharvari was one of the showstoppers.”

Saurabh wanted to design this fashion show differently, so he introduced international dance styles and techniques to enhance the presentation of the supermodels.

He says, “Different dance styles and techniques were used for various themes. It was unique, and I love doing things differently.”

This isn’t the first time Saurabh has worked in a fashion week—he has previously been involved with top pageant shows in India.

There were huge expectations from Junaid Khan, who was arriving in theatres after the super success of Maharaj. On the other hand, Khushi Kapoor also garnered a fanbase after her Netflix debut in The Archies. The trailer garnered favorable reactions, but Advait Chandan’s directorial opened to mixed reviews.

Loveyapa made a decent opening of 1.25 crores on February 7, 2025. It witnessed an upward trend during the first weekend, raising hopes that it would further flourish during Valentine’s Week.

One of the reasons why the lovely puckish Loveyapa, which has shown an increase in footfalls on Day 2, opened to an underwhelming response was the ‘nepo’ label attached to its lead players. Thanks to the constant harping on the debate on legacy and undeserved privilege in the film industry, audiences have become unreasonably wary of actors from within the film industry.

But this prejudice, built and fuelled on social media, is highly unfair. Agreed, not every industry kid is a Ranbir Kapoor or an Alia Bhatt. But then, every outsider is not Sushant Singh Rajput or Kartik Aryan.

India’s Yash Raj Films (Yrf) has unveiled the title for its first female-fronted instalment in the studio’s successful spy universe franchise.

Titled “Alpha,” the film stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari as super agents. “This is a clear take by Yrf to highlight a societal misinterpretation that only men can be Alphas,” said a source close to Yrf.
