FilmRise has acquired the horse racing documentary "Palio" from Archimedia. The Brooklyn-based distributor is releasing the film today on DVD and Blu-ray. The discs hold never-before-seen footage, commentary and interviews. Having premiered at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, "Palio" ventures into the world's oldest horse race. Taking place in the Italian city of Siena, the stakes are high, the strategy is calculated and machismo is everywhere. A jockey's entire well being and love in the town can be torn away by one loss. The film's main focus is on 13-time winner Gigi Bruschelli and his once protégé Giovanni Atzeni. The film has some big names in the documentary world behind it, including James Gay-Rees, who produced "Amy," "Senna" and "Exit Through the Gift Shop," and Francesco Melzi d’Eril, who executive produced "Black Souls Border." "Full of excitement and intrigue, 'Palio' captivates its viewer,"...

★★★★☆ Cosima Spender's fascinating documentary Palio (2015), released on DVD this week, is about the oldest horse race in the world, whose origins date from medieval times. The Palio is a ruthless bareback race around the Piazza del Campo, Siena's main square. There are two a year, held in July and August and each race lasts a breathtaking ninety seconds. Spender interviews jockeys, former jockeys now trainers and horse owners, many of whom describe the race as "the essence of the city".

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

Cosima Spender's wonderfully vivid and fiery film follows a season of the “Palio,” the bareback horse race round the square of Siena, run since medieval times. The director treats her subject matter as if she is making a spaghetti Western or a commedia dell'arte spectacle, not a documentary. It helps that her main protagonists are a colourful and cunning bunch.

Cosima Spender reveals the rivalry, cunning and dodgy dealings at the annual equestrian event in this handsome-looking documentary

Renaissance Rollerball is one way to describe the Palio, the bareback horse race that takes place in the Piazza del Campo in Siena in July and August, a tradition dating back at least to the 16th century. Ten jockeys represent their city districts; they ride in traditional colours and costume and the fans are passionate and partisan. The Palio is wildly exciting and dangerous, although there has apparently been just one fatality in recent times: a horse, not a rider. Film-maker Cosima Spender follows the intense rivalry between various trainers generally former star riders themselves, and introduces us to the Palio’s nuances and undercurrents. As one former jockey says: “è un gioco, non è un corso” – “it is a game, not a race”. There is cunning,...

As a producer who's already got the ball rolling on two terrific documentaries in Amy and Senna, James Gay-Rees' upcoming movies are well worth keeping an eye on. He may not have the public profile of his long-term collaborator Asif Kapadia, but he can sniff out a story and execute a smart non-fiction treatment on it. The latest is horse-racing doc Palio, which has a new trailer we're debuting below.A race that unites and divides the Italian city of Siena, the Palio is an ancient tussle for supremacy between ten jockeys representing the city’s rival districts. It runs twice a year and anything – including whipping-based violence – goes in an event where six month’s bragging rights are at stake. Interestingly, riderless horses can still win the race. Not sure what a horse does with bragging rights, but its district sure gets to crow about it. Even the...
