Ivan Reitman isn’t the only one who believes Ghostbusters cost a pretty penny.
Last year, Sony and Bridesmaids director Paul Feig teamed up to pump fresh blood (ectoplasm?) into the iconic franchise, resulting in an all-female reimagining that placed Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon in the famous proton packs. Emerging from a trying production process – online trolls continued to hurl insults throughout development, and generally cast a dark shadow over the film’s release – Feig’s bold reboot struggled to make much of a dent at the worldwide box office, after mustering a relatively modest $230 million. Not exactly the triumphant comeback Sony had in mind following a 30-year absence, then.

As “Wonder Woman” made box-office history over the weekend, Dan Aykroyd revealed Sunday that “Ghostbusters” director Paul Feig spent $40 million on re-shoots that cost that female-led film its chances at a sequel.

Though the re-make of the beloved ’80s franchise was hailed by critics for strong performances from stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones, the movie cost Sony $70 million in losses. If Aykroyd, who starred in the original film and served as executive producer, is to be believed, at least $40 million of that was easily avoidable.
Speaking on the British morning show “Sunday Brunch,” Aykroyd said:
“The girls are great in it. Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig – what a wonderful, wonderful players they are – and Leslie Jones. I was really happy with the movie, but it cost too much. And Sony does not like to lose money.

It’s a big holiday weekend, so Hollywood has concocted a new flick that’s a perfect match for that very special day. It’s an ode to mothers everywhere, but it’s not sugary and sappy, no hearts and flowers here. That’s because it’s the sophomore feature film from Amy Schumer, so it’s more than a touch tart and spicy. Two years ago the superstar of stand-up and cable TV (the critical and ratings darling of Comedy Central) stormed the multiplex with the hit comedy romance (which she wrote) Trainwreck. For this follow-up , she’s decided to share the screen (top billing, above the title in the ads) with a movie veteran. Of course, she had terrific co-stars in her previous flick (Bill Hader, future Oscar-winner Brie Larson and NBA icon LeBron James, for gosh sake). But this time Amy’s part of a team similar...

As Peter Capaldi’s first series of Doctor Who approaches, we look back over the months leading up to him being cast as the next Doctor…
Hindsight is fun. While it’s hard to spot patterns, coincidences or ironies while events are happening, hindsight (plus internet search engines) can reveal all of the above.
As series eight of Doctor Who approaches then, we thought it might be fun to dig back through the show’s official press bumf to see what was happening behind the scenes in the run-up to Peter Capaldi being announced as the next Doctor. When did the search for Matt Smith’s successor start in earnest? Who first suggested Peter Capaldi? Who knew he’d won the role, and when? What did he get up to in the months he knew, but couldn’t tell? And who had to tell a few porkies in order to keep the secret safe?...
