While I’m pretty sure that only parents can properly fathom the indescribable horror of discovering that your child is missing, I think anyone can relate to the desperation of losing a loved one. That’s why it makes sense that this premise has been used as a jumping off point for all sorts of revenge narratives since time immemorial, with badass protagonists often doing whatever it takes to either recover or avenge missing family members.
However, there is one film that explores a much less glamorous side of these cinematic vendettas, and that would be Denis Villeneuve’s 2013 thriller Prisoners, a modern classic that explores just how far a desperate man might go when he’s convinced that his terrible actions are completely justified.

It’s hard to believe at first glance that the surreal Lovecraftian horrors of Messiah of Evil are courtesy of Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, who wrote both the warm nostalgia bath that is American Graffiti and the absurd comic book antics of Howard the Duck. But there are definite similarities between these films. American Graffiti and Messiah of Evil each capture a particular milieu at the end of an era, whether that’s provincial Modesto before the Beatles and Vietnam, or a beach town being overtaken by an evil cult. And Messiah of Evil and Howard the Duck both concern a cataclysmic threat from another realm.
Messiah of Evil focuses on Arletty (Marianna Hill), a young woman who’s come to Point Dune on the California coast looking for her famous artist father, Joseph Lang (Royal Dano). She soon makes the acquaintance of raffish Thom (Michael Greer), a nomadic...

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.

Plot: In this wicked series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.

But, it was not until The Haunting of Hill House that Flanagan became a recognizable name to the masses. What if Edgar Allan Poe had penned "Succession"? The result might be "The Fall of the House of Usher," the latest streaming terror from Mike Flanagan ("Midnight Mass"). Flanagan, once again working with his usual stable of players, takes a "shut up and play the hits" approach to Poe here, dipping into the legendary author's work to reference nearly everything you can think of -- "The Raven," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Masque of the Red Death," "Murders in the Rue Morgue," and on and on. Even Poe's famous detective character C. Auguste Dupin has a part to play, only now he's been upgraded from a sleuth to a crusading district attorney, played with calm gravitas by Carl Lumbly.
At the center of it all is an obscenely wealthy, and morally corrupt family of siblings, all of whom are under the thumb of their ruthless patriarch, Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). Flanagan...

Mike Flanagan's ever-widening oeuvre primarily consists of horror adaptations infused with his trademark ability to imbue greater depth into characters and introduce fresh perspectives to already-promising premises. Take his films "Doctor Sleep" and "Gerald's Game" for instance — while both are somewhat faithful to the respective Stephen King originals, Flanagan uses these classic stories to flesh out the fictional worlds further, focusing on haunting atmospheres as opposed to traditional jumpscare tactics to elicit scares. This sensibility also bleeds into his small screen offerings, where Flanagan was able to make "The Haunting of Hill House" and "The Haunting of Bly Manor" his own, despite constructing the stories on the foundational tenets of the novels they were adapted from.
Continuing this tradition, Flanagan has currently set sights on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, whose short stories are often a mix of gothic horror and supernatural mystery, making it the perfect playground...

Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke wanted to “embrace” the theatricality of “The Lighthouse” rather than shy away from it. Although it takes place in one location with just two actors, the Dp found that there was “so much imagery in there” to play around with that he was excited by the opportunity to “elevate the dialogue scenes.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Blaschke above.
Directed by Robert Eggers, this A24 release follows two lighthouse keepers (Robert Pattinson as young seaman Ephraim Winslow and Willem Dafoe as the haggard Thomas Wake) who plunge into madness while in isolation on an island in New England. This article marks Part 1 of the Gold Derby series reflecting on Horror Films at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the spine-tingling movies that earned Academy Awards nominations, including the following films from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
In considering history of horror cinema and its performance at the Oscars, it must first be acknowledged that a plethora of pictures from this genre were released prior to the very existence of the Academy Awards. The legendary likes of “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” (1920), “Nosferatu” (1922) and “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925), among others, all earned releases prior to the first Oscar ceremony, in 1928.
There were not many horror films eligible for consideration at the 1st Academy Awards – the most worthy of such recognition would have been “The Man Who Laughs” (1928), one of countless horror movies released in the first half of the century by Universal Pictures. Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will cast a spell on viewers this Halloween.
The streamer confirmed at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the witchy drama will launch its 10 episode first season on Friday, October 26.
Kiernan Shipka will lead the cast of the series which is based on the Archie comic book series of the same name.
Sabrina is “an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, [who] is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High."
"Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.”
"The hourlong drama reimagines the story of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft, naturally," reads the official logline.

Do we sometimes ‘grow into’ movies? This one now plays like a minor masterpiece. ‘Seventies auteur Robert Altman proves himself an expert practitioner of psychological hallucinations, in an intense tale of a schizophrenic children’s author who can’t keep her husband and two (imagined?) lovers sorted out. It’s one of the best, and best-looking puzzle pictures ever.

Well, this is some excellent casting news!
Australian actress Miranda Otto has landed the role of Zelda Spellman on Netflix's Sabrina the Teenage Witch reboot.
The character is described as follows: “Proud and devout, Zelda believes there is no greater honor than serving the Dark Lord as a member of the Church of Night."
"She is the family’s disciplinarian, fiercely protective of Sabrina and very much Cain to Hilda’s Abel.”
On the TV front, Otto most recently appeared in Fox's ill-fated 24: Legacy. That show was given the pink slip after one low-rated season.
The new series is said to be a darker take on the franchise, which will be a complete 180 to the ABC/WB series which aired from 1996 to 2003.

Betty and Alice hid a dead body with the help of an unlikely ally, Archie came clean to Hiram Lodge, and Mayor McCoy resigned from her position as mayor on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 13.
Below, TV Fanatics Jack Ori, Paul Dailly, and Justin Carreiro debate Cheryl's friendship with Betty, Penelope's love affair with Hal Cooper, and the revelation of Hermione's crime career.
1. Betty, Alice, and Jughead sought out Fp's help to dispose of the dead body. Do you think someone will discover the crime/teeth?
Jack: Well, Fp did say it would take a week for the body to fully decompose. So, I suppose it's possible; though, I think this was more about Alice having to re-establish her ties with the Serpents because of this mess.
Paul: Yeah, I don't see that body decomposing before someone steals a tooth or something to hold against them. Maybe Tall Boy is watching Fp's every move.

On Wednesday’s episode, that meant he turned a blind eye to mob dealings and may have even inadvertently caused the murder of a the gangster deliciously named Papa Poutine.
That wasn’t all that went down on Wednesday’s jam-packed “Riverdale” though. The Cooper mother and daughter hid the corpse of a man Chic (Hart Denton) killed, the Mayor (Robin Givens) stepped down to avoid a scandal, Archie’s FBI guy proved to be a fake, and the mastermind behind the ruse was none other than Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols).

The weight of a burning secret is resting on Betty's mind on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 13.
Another dead body has been found and this time, it's one that needs to stay hidden. Betty walked in after Alice and/or Chic killed a man on Riverdale Season 2 Episode 12. As shown in the trailer for "Chapter Twenty: The Tell-Tale Heart," Betty is going to help hide the body for her family.
There's nothing that brings a family closer together than a secret. But, from the looks of the preview photos below, it looks like Betty isn't handling the secret well.
She's breaking down in the bathroom of Riverdale High and needs a few moments to cry. However, an unlikely frenemy (and extended family member) has walked in on her during her lowest moment. Will Cheryl be a shoulder to cry on or the loose end that will be the Cooper's undoing?

This morning we bring you the grand debut of the first official poster for the film The Tell-tale Heart. Directed by John Latier and starring Rose McGowan, Patrick John Flueger, and Peter Bogdanovich, The Tell-tale Heart is of course inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe, depicting a haunting account of a tormented man who continually re-admits himself into a halfway house, in a futile attempt to escape a spiral into madness.
Director John Latier had this to say about the film and poster: “We hope the release of this poster will delight our fans, who have been patiently waiting for updates and a trailer from our film,” says Latier. “We are in post production now, and though I cannot give away too many details yet, this poster and sweepstakes are leading up to a bigger announcement in just a few short weeks.”

Best known as a writer and director (and Orson Welles' great mate), Peter Bogdanovich also likes to indulge his thespian side. This year he's already been in front of the camera for Max Rose, The Healer, and The Tell-Tale Heart, and Bogdanovich is now set to add Too Late to that list. He'll be appearing alongside John Hawkes.Too Late is the feature debut of Dennis Hauck, whose short films have made him something of a festival darling in recent years. At its simplest, the story involves a private investigator and his relationship with the woman he's been hired to find. We're promised a non-linear narrative though, which suggests that Hauck - who also wrote the screenplay - is aiming to complicate that well-worn trope.Bogdanovich's role hasn't been revealed so far, but Hawkes will be the detective, following his stand-out roles in Winter's Bone and Martha Marcy May Marlene.
