“Thou Shalt Not Steal,” an upcoming Australian series that premiered three of its eight episodes at the Toronto International Film Festival, is an entertaining road trip that cleverly tells an Aboriginal tale through use of humor and dozens of instantly recognizable Australia stereotypes.
It is packaged as eight half-hour episodes that will upload to Australian streamer Stan on Oct. 17. International rights are handled by Dcd Rights.
Told through the eyes of a young Aboriginal delinquent woman, “Thou Shalt Not Steal” races through a 1980s-medley of toxic masculinity, functioning alcoholics, snags on the barbie, reverence for the Outback and the quiet wisdom of the indigenous population.
But it is a fun and inviting ride as Robyn and an awkward white teenager (played by fellow “Heartbreak” star Will McDonald) flee her small central desert community in a stolen taxi. On their heels – and sometimes ahead of them – are a snake-like ex-hooker and the boy’s domineering father,...

Exclusive: Jacob Stefiuk from Montreal was part of the 2023 Telluride Film Festival student symposium intake — where Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins sharpened his filmmaking chops 20 years ago — and the experience has been life-changing.
The town of Telluride is tucked into a box canyon surrounded by towering picturesque peaks in the southwestern neck of Colorado. There are parks, waterfalls and river walks.
It was here last year that Stefiuk was able to clear his head and write the most personal section of his first film, a 22-minute short called The Clearing. “It was the first film that didn’t involve school,” says Stefiuk, who studied film production at Concordia University in Montreal.
I met Stefiuk and other students at last year’s Telluride. He recently sent me a copy of The Clearing, and it’s a beautifully poetic work that he shot in the Gaspésie region of the St. Lawrence River.

Last week, Australia’s screen industries were celebrating an increase in the country’s Location Offset scheme, but this week “great angst” is washing through the production community.
That’s according to Screen Producers Australia CEO Matthew Deaner, who has warned that while the government keeps overdue streaming regulation on hold, Australia is “on track to develop more as a service provider for Hollywood productions.”
“While the recent confirmation of the increase in Australia’s Location Offset that benefits non-Australian projects was great news, the absence of commensurate certainty for Australia’s home-grown industry and Australian projects through streaming regulation is now causing great angst in our industry,” said Deaner.
The Spa supported raising the Location Offset rebate for TV and film productions shooting in the country from the previous 16.5% to 30%, which will likely trigger more overseas investment, and the service work it could bring, but has been vocally critical...

Commissioning by streamers in Australia has plummeted to a new low, according to a new report published today by the Aussie industry union Screen Producers Australia (Spa).
The Spa’s report surveyed its members with 80% of respondents citing “Less” or “Much Less” commissioning interest from streaming services compared to last year.
Respondents to the survey quoted a range of negative impacts of the slowdown, including the mental health of crew to the financing of projects, with 54% stating the slowdown had impacted every stage of the production process, from initial meetings to development and into production.
When asked what the most common reason given by the streamers for the slowdown was, the Spa report says respondents named a “global slowdown in investment” as the top reason while several noted “awaiting government regulation” as the true undercurrent that has affected the industry productivity.

Australian producers are “at risk” of becoming “slaves” to international streamers, a top industry body has warned, as the debate around regulation heats up in the country.
Screen Producers Australia (Spa) made the comment in a statement issued to the National Cultural Policy inquiry hearing today for the government’s upcoming ‘Revive’ plan. Streaming regulation has become the hot button topic since the long-term plan to revamp the arts in the country was first announced in January last year.
Spa, which represents most of Australia’s main producers, has been consistently vocal in its criticism of the global streamers. It is advocating for the likes of Netflix and Prime Video to spend a minimum 20% of their local revenues on Australian content within three years.
The Australian government has pledged to introduce streaming regulation on July 1, but is yet to table a motion in Parliament, leaving producers in limbo over what...

The time travel slasher comedy Totally Killer is scheduled to begin streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 6th, but today, one week out from the release, the marketing department has unveiled a clip from the film that I would have deemed too much of a Spoiler to show off. But showing it off they are, so I have embedded it above. This scene shows the masked murderer know as the Sweet 16 Killer crossing paths with Liana Liberato from Scream VI, but if you don’t want to know how that encounter turns out, avert your eyes.
Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) directed Totally Killer from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo, based on an original script by David Matalon (The Clearing) and Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Merried). Rob Lowe, Burt Reynolds and Ice-t starred in a low-budget movie called Crazy Six in 1997. The movie, which told the story of powerful mafia families vying for control of the arms trade, was written by Galen Yuen, who is the focus of a new original podcast series for Apple.
However, Yuen isn’t your traditional feature film writer.
The series – Magnificent Jerk – follows journalist Maya Lin Sugarman, formerly of The Washington Post, on a journey to discover who her uncle really was.
Starting with a box of his forgotten screenplays, the series sees Lin Sugarman discovering that he was a member of a Chinese gang who went to jail before turning his life story into the Crazy Six screenplay (albeit with a few twists).
The series, which launches on September 18, comes from Pineapple Street Studios, the Audacy-owned company behind The Clearing and Heaven’s Gate.

Australian entertainment is having a moment. “Bluey” has become a favorite of children and parents around the world and has even led to American kids speaking with Australian accents. “Neighbors,” the long-running Australian soap opera that helped launch the careers of stars like Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue, and Chris Hemsworth, was given a second chance after being picked up by Amazon Freevee. And three new Australian series have reached 10 times the demand for the average series in the U.S. since May.
Leading the pack is Amazon Prime Video’s “Deadloch,” which premiered in June. “The Clearing,” a Disney+ original thriller available on Hulu in the U.S., was released around the same time as “Deadloch” and had similar demand. Since Aug. 5, “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” another Prime Video original, has had higher demand in the U.S. than any other Australian series released this year.

Amy Beaufort, also known as Freya Haywood, is the main character in the Hulu adaptation of J. P. Pomare’s popular novel In the Clearing. The TV series, titled The Clearing, delves into Amy’s personal struggles as a young girl in a cult called “The Kindred” and later as a mother of two. The show draws significant inspiration from the real-life Australian cult known as “The Family,” which was led by Anne Hamilton-Byrne, considered one of history’s most infamous cult leaders. In “The Family,” children were made to believe they were siblings, with Anne as their biological mother. They endured physical abuse, forced drug administration, and other horrific punishments. One of these children, Sarah Moore, eventually left the cult and contacted the police, leading to an investigation in 1987. In The Clearing, Amy’s character represents Sarah Moore, who bravely alerted the authorities and played a crucial role in...

Based on J.P. Pomare’s novel In the Clearing, the Hulu original series The Clearing dives into a gripping story inspired by real-life events surrounding an Australian cult known as “The Family.” The show, with its first three episodes premiering on May 24th, 2023, offers a fictionalized portrayal of the cult and its charismatic leader, Adrienne, portrayed by Miranda Otto. Adrienne is a character based on the notorious cult leader Anne Hamilton-Byrne, who initially worked as a yoga teacher before ascending to the role of a self-proclaimed guru within her New Age group. In real life, Anne Hamilton-Byrne founded “The Family” during the 1960s in Australia. Although the group initially presented itself as a spiritual new-age group centered around yoga and meditation, it eventually came to light that they engaged in abusive and manipulative practices. While the Hulu series The Clearing is a work of fiction, it is heavily inspired by...

Amy’s decision to escape the cult she was part of ended up aiding the police in their investigation of the cult. The police did find the children and arrested supervisor Henrik and his wife for their involvement in kidnapping those children. Tamsin, another member of the cult, managed to escape and avoid capture by the police, resulting in the dissolution of the cult. The cult was founded by a middle-aged lady named Adrienne, who arrived there shortly with her secretary, Dr. Latham. In a different timeline, probably in the future, Amy had grown up to be a young mother named Freya, who was protecting her son Billy. Hearing of another abduction, Freya feared the cult’s involvement in it.
