Michael Alig, the subject of Party Monster who murdered his roommate Angel Melendez in 1996, was one of the last people that former Limelight owner Peter Gatien would have imagined killing and butchering someone.
Peter Gatien On Michael Alig
“When I heard about it, if someone came up to me and was like listen Peter one of your staff killed somebody in their apartment last night, who do you think it is? Michael Alig might have been the 995th person on my list,” Gatien, who employed about 1000 people at the time, told uInterview exclusively in 2011. “I mean he was small, non violent. It's not like he carried a knife or a gun, or ever gotten into a fight.”
When Alig killed Melendez, who had been hitting him up for drug debts, with the help of fellow scenester Robert “Freeze” Riggs, he was at the height of his drug use. By his own account,...

Michael Alig Released From Prison After 17 Years
Alig, 47, plead guilty to the manslaughter of Andre “Angel” Melendez in 1997. Angel had been a regular at Alig’s famous New York City parties – Alig worked as a party promoter for nightclubs, attracting thousands to the New York City nightlife. His drug fueled lifestyle made him a legend. Alig was convicted of Melendez’s murder alongside Robert Riggs, who was released from prison in 2010, and the two of them admitted to killing Melendez during an argument and then chopping up the body and throwing it into the Hudson River.
Alig was sentenced to 10-20 years in prison and has reportedly been up for parole since 2007. During his time in prison, Alig kept up his cultural presence with a blog and an active...

Peter Gatien, a striking man made slightly more intimidating by an eye patch he sports after losing an eye playing hockey in his youth, is the subject of Billy Corben's (Square Grouper) warts-and-all documentary Limelight, produced in part by Gatien's daughter Jen. Gatien masterminded several famous nightclubs, though the doc takes a look at Limelight, built on the site of a former Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion. Sold off to a drug rehab program and then to Gatien, Limelight blossomed into one of the hottest spots in town. The founder overlooked the introduction of new musical styles into the mainstream and the rise of the club kids, one whom happened to be Michael Alig. Alig's murder of Andre Melendez cast media attention on the club and certainly aided its final shuttering, one of several attempts to close down the spot in the 1990s.

Billy Corben is a bit of a badass in the documentary game. Through his Miami-based media studio Rakontur, he produces down-and-dirty docs on everything from college sports to cocaine. His latest, Limelight, chronicles the astronomic rise and fall of New York nightclub kingpin Peter Gatien. I really dug it, and you will too, so see it at New York's Landmark Sunshine Cinema while you still can.
I was an Nyu student, I graduated in 2008. I never lived in Palladium, but I had several friends who did. I remember hearing, "Oh, it used to be a night club," but the cultural significance was never really expressed to me. Do you think the university has tried to downplay the importance of the location?
Well, they do still call it The Palladium. It's just a Google away. I believe that was the venue, when Peter owned it, that was the site of Moby's first ever solo gig.

The film tells the story of legendary nightclub owner Peter Gatien, who rose to fame with his New York City nightclubs Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium and Club USA in the 1980s and ’90s. While Gatien initially served as the figurehead for New York nightlife for a generation and defined the image of an era, he was eventually brought down during Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s determined crackdown on clubs. ‘Limelight’ features interviews with notorious players of the 1980s and ’90s club era, key informants in Gatien’s tax evasion trials and the nightclub...

Read our exclusive interview with Jen Gatien, who served as one of the producers on the new documentary ‘Limelight.’ The film, which was directed by Billy Corben, chronicles the rise and fall of the nightclub career of Gatien’s father, Peter. Known as the king of the 1980s New York City club scene, Peter built and oversaw an empire and helped create the culture that defined an era. However, his club empire declined in the late ’90s after Mayor Rudy Giuliani cracked down on nightclubs. After pleading guilty to a tax evasion charge, Peter was deported back to his native Canada. ‘Limelight’ also features interviews with some of the government officials,...

"For a decade starting in the late 60s, the Kashmere Stage Band — a funk-infused outfit rooted in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood in northeast Houston — built a reputation as the most formidable high school band in the country." Scott Tobias for NPR: "Under the leadership of Conrad O Johnson Sr, a prodigious musician in his own right (he once played with Count Basie), the band zigged where others zagged, embracing the sounds (and moves) of James Brown and Otis Redding while its peers were mimicking the ossified standards of 40s big bands. In competition — and on recordings — the contrast was clear: The Kashmere Stage Band was lively, exuberant, spontaneous and contemporary, and the also-rans were square nostalgists."
"Three decades after graduation, members reunite to honor their beloved 93-year-old bandleader, teacher and role model," writes Eric Hynes in Time Out New York. "Amid its celebrations of black power, ambitious Afros and fly female trombonists,...

In the 1980s and 90s, metropolitan club owner Peter Gatien was such an influential taste-maker that he was once dubbed "the king of New York City nightclubs." His crown jewel was Limelight, a midnight haven that welcomed thousands of enthusiastic patrons -- celebrities, drag queens, dancers -- and blasted innovative electronic tunes until sunrise. All walks of life were welcome in the Studio 54 of the 1990s, until Mayor Rudolph Guliani's crime crackdown descended onto Gatien. His clubs were raided, he was arrested on tax evasion charges and deported to Canada.

Summary: A requiem for the New York nightlife that once was.
Many a time did I walk past the church on 6th Avenue and 20th Street whilst studying at New York University, never giving it a moment's considering. These days, that location is the mighty Limelight Marketplace, a luxury shopping and dining destination... but it wasn't always so. The shame I now feel for my local historical ignorance is profound. How could I have been unaware that not even ten years ago stood perhaps the most infamous and culturally progressive nightclub in New York? Why did no one tell me?
Good thing director Billy Corben cleared that up. Billy is a bit of a badass in the documentary game. In just ten years, the man has produced six films that scour the dark underbelly of the American justice system. Though his topics range from rape to football, Corben clearly has...

Limelight Click here to read the review! "Even those ‘90s New Yorkers who kept their distance from the club scene might remember journalist Frank Owen’s seemingly weekly exposés in the Village Voice on Gatien and the nightlife world at large. Owen was a great read then, and he’s by far the most engaging talking head in Limelight, handy with an outrageous anecdote, eager to burst the bubble of a ludicrous lie, bereft of an agenda. If only Corben’s movie had emulated Owen’s admirable mixture of candor and circumspection."...

Title: Limelight Directed by: Billy Corben Starring: Peter Gatien, Moby and Michael Alig People’s views and opinions on controversial subjects often are linked to their experiences. This is certainly seen in the new Magnolia Pictures documentary ‘Limelight,’ which tells the story of well-known New York City nightclub owner Peter Gatien. The film’s director, veteran documentary helmer Billy Corben decided not to focus solely on Gatien’s side of why he was ultimately charged with tax evasion; he also featured account of events from witnesses and government officials to explain why the former King of New York Clubs was targeted. ‘Limelight’ chronicles the rise and fall of Gatien, one of the city’s...

Billy Corben's documentary Limelight, about the rise and fall of Peter Gatien's empire, also illuminates the shopping mall-ification of NYC over the last decade. The best documentaries work in roundabout fashion; they seem to be about subject A, and very directly so - but in their depiction of subject A, what you really learn about is subject B, of which subject A is one small piece. We saw it earlier this year with Cindy Meehl's Buck, a documentary about psychologically damaged horses and the horse whisperer who heals them; in actuality, the film is about how to deal with psychologically damaged people. Limelight (which premiered at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival) is another such film. Directed by Billy Corben, who documented Colombian cocaine dealers in Cocaine Cowboys, Limelight is ostensibly about the rise and fall of New York nightlife king Peter Gatien. Gatien, who at one point ran...

A version of this review ran as part of our coverage of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival.
Billy Corben is the drug documentary kingpin of indie film. He's made two docs about cocaine, one about marijuana, and now "Limelight," about New York City's ecstasy soaked club scene in the 1990s. His particular specialty are films that ape their subject's pharmacological effects: "Cocaine Cowboys" is twitchy and paranoid; "Square Grouper" is mellow and easygoing to a fault. "Limelight" sends us tripping on a relentless 100-minute roll.
The man who leads us on this journey is Peter Gatien, a one-eyed club empresario from Canada who moved to the Us and started opening upscale discos all along the Eastern seaboard. New York, Miami, Atlanta, and then back to New York where he created his crown jewel: Limelight, a massive dance complex housed in a former Episcopal church. The AIDS epidemic of the mid-1980s nearly killed his business,...

Gist: Peter Gatien started in the early 1970s as a jean retail store entrepreneur in his hometown of Cornwall, Ontario, and grew into one of the most prominent nightclub moguls in the Us, owning not only The Limelight, but Club USA, Tunnel and Palladium as well, all of which were home to countless illegal activities. Gatien was eventually shut down and deported back to Canada for tax evasion,...

Documentary director Billy Corben is in the midst of a prolific 2011. The Cocaine Cowboys director premiered his marijuana doc Square Grouper: The Godfathers of Ganja at SXSW (where we reviewed it and interviewed him). He has Dawg Fight coming later in the year, and he recently debuted Limelight at the Tribeca Film Festival. The doc follows Ontario-born Peter Gatien on his rise and fall as the “King of New York Clubs.”
Taking an exhilarating Goodfellas-esque approach on the fame, money, and lifestyle that came with opening the four biggest clubs in NYC, Corben introduces a set of real-life eclectic characters that could easily be found in Scorsese’s masterpiece. With a focus on the 80s and 90s club scene, specifically Limelight, we learn how Gatien climbed the ladder and was then hit with legal trouble due to the drug-fueled frenzy in the clubs.
Gatien’s slick and engaging demeanor make him the perfect doc subject.

"Limelight" director Billy Corben and producers Jen Gaiten and Alfred Spellman celebrate the world premiere of their new documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival. The trio had more of a reason to celebrate after Magnolia announced that morning that it would be releasing the film theatrically in August. This is the Rakontur filmmakers' second world premiere in two months, an occasion marked by an after-party at New York City's Bowery Hotel. [Photo and caption by Daniel Loria]...

Billy Corben has the kind of voice you can hear through a closed door down a hallway. You can hardly blame him though, for these days, the young director has a lot to be excited about. His new documentary on 80's New York nightclub king Peter Gatien, Limelight, sold out its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, and HBO is developing his docs Cocaine Cowboys I & II into a dramatically scripted series.

Florida Film Festival programming director Matthew Curtis hung out out with filmmaker Billy Corben at the Enzian Theater in Orlando last night during a screening of Corben's documentary, "Square Grouper." (Next week, Corben will premiere an even newer documentary, "Limelight," at the Tribeca Film Festival.) The two spoke affectionately of Corben's longtime history with the festival, as his first feature, "Raw Deal: A Question of Consent," played there ten years ago.

I’ve been a fan of Billy Corben, Alfred Spellman and their Miami-based production company Rakontur since the highly entertaining documentary Cocaine Cowboys premiered in 2005 at the Tribeca Film Festival. Their latest, Square Grouper: The Godfathers of Ganja recently had its world premiere at South By Southwest, and The Film Stage sat down with director Corben, producer Spellman, producer/researcher Lindsay Snell, and a member of the film’s infamous Black Tuna Gang chronicled in the film, straight out of jail – Robert Platshorn.
After a film festival and college tour, the film will be released on DVD (April 19th) and Video on Demand (April 22nd) by Magnolia Pictures. Rakontur’s next film, Limelight will follow in Cocaine Cowboy’s footsteps, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival next month.

This year’s Tribeca will be running from Wednesday, April 20 to Sunday, May 1, so its close start date means that the lineup of movies are coming in fast. We’ve already gotten the World Narrative and World Documentary categories, and the next batch of movies have just been revealed.
Thanks to Deadline, we now have movies in the Spotlight, Cinemania, Special Screening and Sports categories. The list isn’t half bad; the one I’m looking forward to the most is The Guard, which got very strong reviews at Sundance earlier this year. All the categories seem to have solid picks, and I’d say this is shaping up to be a good year. Tfs will be there (including me!), so many of these movies will have reviews up on the site when the festival runs. Take a look at it below:

Well, congratulations New Yorkers, because you’ll get to see at least 2 films I saw at Sundance in January, when they screen at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, which just announced the second half of its festival lineup – the Spotlight, Cinemania, and Special Screening sections, most notably.
The films I’m referring to are Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, and The Guard, which Don Cheadle co-stars in, as an FBI agent (or is it CIA).
I’m still planning on going through the full list of entries to spotlight any titles worthy of this website, and I’ll do that in coming days/weeks… definitely before the festival begins next month – a festival I plan to attend, since it’s right in my backyard.
Worth noting is that Rapaport’s doc will be making its New York premiere, the...

Christine Vachon might have been a pioneer for women working as independent film producers, but there are a good bunch that are joining the ranks. I'd be tempted to say that NYC-based producer Jen Gatien also comes from the school of hard knocks, as she was the driving force behind a pair of films which weren't the easiest to bring to market in the Cannes selected Abel Ferrara's Chelsea on the Rocks and the controversial Sundance drama Hounddog. A producer who moonlights between producing some edgy documentary films and feature films with emerging filmmaker talents, you could say that with her current cluster of projects (in all stages of production) that this counts as her true breakout year, but Gatien has been involved in the indie biz since her internship beginnings about a decade ago at October Films (the roots of the Focus Features' shingle). Gatien's DeerJen Films...
