The world of celebrity charitable foundations is big business, from old Hollywood stars like the late Paul Newman’s Newman’s Own Foundation donating hundreds of millions to charity via its food products, to young superstars like Olivia Rodrigo’s Fund 4 Good advocating for reproductive rights on her Guts World Tour. It’s the perfect way for A-listers to spotlight their philanthropy, while their accounts make sure the generosity is accounted for and publicists can place items about caring clients.
The Will And Jada Smith Family Foundation was the perfect outlet for the Hollywood power couple to advocate for the issues that mattered to them, including health and wellness, arts education and sustainability. But Will’s image took a serious hit after he slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. It's been 22 years since Rob Cohen directed a shameless knockoff of Kathryn Bigelow's "Point Break," starring Paul Walker instead of Keanu Reeves, Vin Diesel instead of Patrick Swayze, and street racing instead of surfing and sky diving. And while at the time, the success of the film "The Fast and the Furious" seemed only vaguely remarkable, over the course of the last two decades it has ballooned into a multi-billion dollar franchise, full of epic car stunts, ludicrous storylines, and endless ruminations about the meaning of "family."
Yes, "Fast and Furious" has become a household name, perhaps permanently associated with the blockbuster vehicular nonsense films of Vin Diesel and company. But it was not always this way. The common expression "fast and furious" has been used many times in Hollywood, for films about race car driving, funny murder mysteries, beloved Looney Tunes adventures, and low-budget crime thrillers.

Just days after it was reported that director Guy Ritchie was kicking around ideas for a sequel to his 2019 live adaptation of the classic Disney animated film Aladdin, the film’s star gives a somber update to those who enjoyed the live-action version and were anticipating a sequel. However, the movie’s star, Mena Massoud isn’t optimistic about the movie’s chances of being made. He made he feelings known on Twitter when he was asked if we were still getting an Aladdin 2. Massoud replied bluntly, saying it’s “Very unlikely at this point.”

Disney is on a streak of releasing a slew of live-action adaptations of their original animated movies that already had large fanbases. They have mostly been successful, especially Aladdin, with a take of $1 billion at the box office, but none of the adaptations have ventured into sequels.

It’s been nearly a year since Will Smith struck Chris Rock on the Academy Awards stage. As a result, Smith is not expected to attend the 95th annual Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.
Smith isn’t the only notable talent that won’t be attending the Oscars this year. Reports indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” star Tom Cruise has also been a no-show at the event, even though he is nominated as a producer for the blockbuster in the best picture category. After a very carefully curated series of stops during awards season, Cruise bows out on the final evening.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” director James Cameron is also skipping the ceremony. His co-producer, Jon Landau, relayed the news to the New York Times’ Kyle Buchanan on the carpet, citing “personal reasons” as the explanation.

One year after the slap that shook the industry, Will Smith is getting ready to return to acting.
While the “Men in Black” star has kept a mostly low profile in the 12 months since slapping presenter Chris Rock at last year’s Oscars ceremony, he is now prepping for his first acting gig since the incident that sparked headlines around the world and a still-simmering news cycle. Sources say Smith is looking to reestablish his commercial bona fides and is poised to shoot Sony’s “Bad Boys 4“ and Netflix’s “Fast and Loose” back to back.
That strategy would mark a pivot from his last two movies — Warner Bros.’ “King Richard” and Apple’s “Emancipation” — which were viewed as awards-season plays rather than studio tentpoles. Although “King Richard” drummed up moderate box-office business ($39 million worldwide), it earned less than Smith’s ultimate payday including back-end ($40 million). Smith’s paycheck ballooned after Warner Bros.

Bel-Air creator Morgan Cooper and season two showrunner Carla Banks Waddles are defending executive producer Will Smith following criticisms of his character after he slapped Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars.
In a new interview published ahead of the second season debut of Bel-Air on Feb. 24, Cooper spoke to Yahoo! Entertainment about the support Smith has given the show and its creative team day in and day out. For the show’s writer and director, he’s “got nothing but good things to say about Will.”
“Will is a great guy, and he’s demonstrated that with his actions throughout the whole Bel-Air development process, back when this was just my short film,” Cooper explained. “I’ve seen the content of his character on a day-to-day basis with this crew, this cast, my producing partners, the network and the studio.”

Will Smith says “there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment” when explaining his decision to slap Chris Rock during the March 2022 Oscars ceremony.
In a new Instagram video, the King Richard star answers a series of questions about that night, offering up yet another apology to Rock while also discussing the impact it had on Rock’s family; whether he was responding to his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s eye roll when he took the stage; the effects his actions had on the night’s other nominees and winners; and more.
“I was fogged out by that point,” Smith says, explaining why it took so long to offer Rock an apology. “It’s all fuzzy. I’ve reached out to Chris, and the message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk.

Sony chairman Tom Rothman gave an update on “Bad Boys 4,” saying despite previous rumors, the film is still slated to star Will Smith and Martin Lawrence and remains in development. The fourth film was announced in 2020 following the success of the third installment, “Bad Boys for Life,” the first movie in the franchise sans director Michael Bay. (“Bad Boys” 3 was directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.)
Yet reports in April 2022 hinted that “Bad Boys 4” may have been on hold following Smith attacking Chris Rock at the Oscars. Smith reportedly received 40 pages of a “Bad Boys 4” script ahead of the Oscars. Sony chairman Rothman refuted any claims that Smith’s involvement in the sequel was put on hold.
“No. That was inaccurate,” Rothman told Deadline. “That movie’s been in development and still is. There weren’t any brakes to pump because the car wasn’t moving.

The one film role Will Smith had scheduled for release in 2022 has reportedly been postponed to next year in the aftermath of the actor’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the Academy Awards.
Variety reports that Emancipation, an Antoine Fuqua-directed movie where Smith portrayed a runaway slave, was supposed to arrive on Apple TV+ in time for the 2022 awards season. While no release date was formally announced, Emancipation is now facing a 2023 premiere, as “the Slap” as well as post-production delays have likely forced it from this year’s schedule.

Whoopi Goldberg predicts Will Smith’s career will come back to normal after he slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards last month. Reports surfaced almost a week after the incident that Netflix was pumping the breaks on its Will Smith-starring action-thriller “Fast and Loose.” The project was moved to the streamer’s backburner in the days following Smith’s slap. Goldberg reacted to the news on the April 4 episode of “The View,” assuring viewers that Smith’s career will rebound.
“Some of Will Smith’s future projects are in question,” Goldberg said. “The question is does he have a path back? Yes, of course he does! He will be fine. He will be back. No worries.”
Goldberg’s “The View” co-host Ana Navarro argued in favor of Smith’s comeback, saying she did not agree with Netflix’s choice to drop its planned Smith-starring project.

Much like other celebrities, the hosts of “The View” are tired of talking about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. But Ana Navarro had something to add Monday: Smith shouldn’t lose projects because of what happened.
In the aftermath of the incident, Netflix has reportedly put their next project with Smith, a film called “Fast and Loose” on hold. It’s not altogether unexpected, as several Hollywood experts told TheWrap last week that his work would take a hit, at least in the short-term. But Navarro doesn’t agree that should happen.
“Look, I’m so tired of talking about this, I’d like to slap myself,” Navarro said to preface her comments. “I really wish we were talking about Clarence Thomas and Ginni Thomas, because I think that has more of an effect on our lives. But, I understand that this has really struck a nerve with people,...

Netflix is reportedly backing off development of the upcoming action thriller "Fast and Loose," which was set to star Will Smith, according to THR. To be clear, this particular film had lost some momentum even before the incident at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, during which Smith got up on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after he made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss. Pinkett Smith lost her hair as a result of the autoimmune disorder alopecia.

With such a great controversy as the Oscar slap, consequences and reprisals are sure to come in the aftermath. While Will Smith has side-stepped some punishments from the Academy by quitting the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences—though an inquiry will still go forward regardless, and there could still be further penalties applied—others in Hollywood are still considering their options. The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) is said to be considering punitive measures, and in the first sign, the smack will hurt Smith’s career —as many expected and predicted—some of his projects are falling apart.

When Will Smith charged the stage and slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards last Sunday, the film world instantly began speculating about how the altercation would affect the star’s career. While Smith received a standing ovation when he won his first Oscar less than an hour later, it was unclear how much studios and fans would embrace future projects Smith was developing.
The first domino to fall was Smith’s membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy acted first, launching a formal review of Smith’s conduct with expulsion from the prestigious organization on the table as a potential consequence. Smith opted to act first, resigning from the Academy before he could be kicked out and stating that he would accept any other future consequences.

Netflix has slowed development on its upcoming action-thriller “Fast and Loose,” which Will Smith has been attached to star in. The project has been moved to the streamer’s back burner in the days following the 2022 Oscars ceremony, during which Smith walked onstage and slapped Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about the appearance of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
In the week before the Oscars ceremony, director David Leitch reportedly also pulled away from the project, electing to move to the Ryan Gosling vehicle “Fall Guy” for Universal. After beginning to search for a new director, Netflix has now halted “Fast and Loose” in the days following the Oscars.
It remains uncertain whether Netflix will return to developing “Fast and Loose” and, if so, whether the streamer would seek a new star for the project. Variety has reached out to Netflix for comment.

The 2022 Oscars were certainly one for the history books.
With multiple historic wins — “Coda” star Troy Kotsur becoming the first deaf man to win an acting award, and Jane Campion becoming the third woman to win Best Director, among others — and plenty of viral moments, the Academy Awards outdid themselves once again by becoming, well, undone.
As Jessica Chastain scooped up Best Actress for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and Ariana DeBose followed Rita Moreno’s historic footsteps and won for playing Anita in “West Side Story,” and Will Smith landed his first Oscar for “King Richard,” Hollywood’s biggest night was full of starry surprises.

Exclusive: In what marks another big starry package for Netflix the streamer has acquired worldwide rights to the action thriller Fast & Loose from STXfilms, with Will Smith set to star and David Leitch to direct. Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber penned the script.
Deadline first reported in February that the package was hitting the market with every major player involved in the bidding war. Netflix would eventually win rights and has taken its time in negotiating the deals.
The film follows a man who wakes up in Tijuana with no memories. As he pieces together his past, he learns he’s been living two lives, one as a crime kingpin and the other as an undercover CIA agent.
Leitch and Kelly McCormick will produce for 87North along with STXfilms and Westbrook Studios’ Smith, Co-President and Head of Motion Pictures Jon Mone, Ryan Shimazaki and James Lassiter.
Leitch and Smith and their companies are plenty busy.
