We have some sad news to share today, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that writer/director Manny Coto – who is best known for directing the 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) – has passed away at the age of 62, following a thirteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Manuel Hector Coto was born in Havana, Cuba on June 10, 1961, then his family emigrated to the U.S. just a few months later. Coto and his siblings were raised in Orlando, Florida, and he was still a child when a fascination with Star Trek inspired him to start shooting short films with his father’s 8mm camera. After attending college in New Orleans, he moved out to Los Angeles in 1983 and started working in commercials. He eventually crossed paths with Tippi Hedren, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock on The Birds and Marnie, and was able to get her to agree to...

The last time the Writers Guild of America went on strike against the Hollywood studios was in November 2007, which feels like a million generations ago. George W. Bush was still president; the broadcast networks still had an enormous footprint on the pop-culture landscape; and House of Cards, the first high-profile series made directly for streaming, was still six years away.
In both cases, the writers are picketing over transformations to the industry that have made it exponentially more difficult for writers to make a living. In 2007, it was about the...

Although its 10 Emmy wins for its first season made HBO’s “The White Lotus” the TV academy’s most-honored program of 2022, it didn’t receive much love at all from other awards bodies last year. Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award voters kept it out of their Best Limited Series lineups, and it lost in the corresponding PGA Award category to “Mare of Easttown.” Its second season has now earned it another shot at a PGA Award victory, but it is now competing in Best Drama Series due to its incorporation of preexisting characters. Whether or not this move was beneficial remains to be seen, but the odds appear to be in its favor.
Whereas less than 3% of Gold Derby users who made predictions for the 2022 limited series PGA Award race selected “The White Lotus” as the likeliest winner, a much more decisive 72% of the 2023 drama series odds-makers are expecting it to triumph.

Showtime has announced that America’s favorite serial killer, “Dexter,” will return for a 10-episode limited series set to premiere next fall. Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall will reprise his role as the title character, Dexter Morgan, reuniting with showrunner and screenwriter Clyde Phillips. So does this mean Hall could finally take home the Emmy that eluded him for five straight years?
SEEAwards spotlight: Showtime’s riveting ‘The Comey Rule’ should propel Jeff Daniels to Golden Globes, SAG and more
Despite winning a Golden Globe and SAG Award in 2010, the celebrated actor was never able to secure the top prize from the television academy. Hall came up short five years in a row, losing three times to Bryan Cranston followed by Kyle Chandler and Damian Lewis. He was also nominated once for Best Drama Series as an executive producer (2011), but lost to “Mad Men.”

It’s hard to do “24” without Kiefer Sutherland as the leading man, but Fox keeps trying — with Sutherland’s help.
And this time they are doubling down on their efforts, with two projects in development — a Jack Bauer prequel series and a legal thriller spinoff. While Sutherland may not return as Jack Bauer for either, he’s backing both as a producer. And the franchise star is so into the latter project that he’s actually getting in on the brainstorming.
“I can tell you he loves the idea of the legal thriller [spin-off],” entertainment president of Fox Broadcasting, Michael Thorn, told TheWrap during the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday — just a few hours after the network announced that project was in development. “And he’s been pitching ideas directly to [longtime ’24’ showrunner] Howard Gordon.”

So, here’s a classic dilemma: You’ve just devoted two hours to watching last week’s insanely anticipated TV movie, 24: Redemption, and now, staring you smack in the face at the local video store or electronics shop, is 24: Redemption… on DVD. And seeing it begs the question: what will I get for my suggested retail price of $26.98 that I didn’t get for free on Fox the other day?...

ABC won the weekly ratings race and took the lead in the November sweep with help from the American Music Awards and a surging "Dancing With the Stars."
For the sweep, ABC broke its tie with CBS and moved into a slight lead in the adult demo Tuesday, averaging a 3.2 rating compared with CBS' 3.1. CBS will win the month among total viewers.
ABC also overthrew CBS in the weekly race thanks to the best-rated American Music Awards (12.2 million viewers and a 5.1 rating/12 share in the key adults 18-49 demographic) in four years Sunday night as well as the Nov. 17 "Dancing" (11.6 million, 4.3/10) ramping up to its fall finale. Pardon me, but did you say that Jack Bauer was washed up? This is simply not the case. Not only are there numerous reasons to justify continued worship of the Bauer, but the 24: Redemption numbers are in and proving that washed up old Jack can still kick ass, so don’t look for Kiefer Sutherland to announce a Lost Boys 3 to reboot his career anytime soon. The two-hour movie even, which serves as a prequel to Day Seven, launched with around 12 million viewers. That’s on a Sunday, and for a Sunday that is a very good number for 24 or anything else for that matter. But, isn’t 24 winding down? You ask. Well, no. In fact, maybe there is a way to creatively twist the numbers, but with the exception of Day 6 24 has done progressively better from season to season. Day 6 is a bit hard to read, though, since...

Torture's out. Guantanamo Bay's going. All things considered, Jack Bauer's doing Ok. Last night's 24 prequel special, 24: Redemption, averaged 12.1 million viewers, Nielsen estimates said, and delivered the Fox franchise to a bigger audience than where the series left off 18 long months ago. From 8-10 p.m., the TV-movie ran second in viewers and adults 18-49 behind the resurgent American Music Awards on ABC. Prior to Sunday, the last new 24 aired in May 2007. The show sat out the entire 2007-08 season due to the writers' strike. In the interim, one of the the features that helped make 24 a favorite of President George W. Bush's...

Though the start of Jack Bauer's next day-long odyssey is still a couple of months away, the clock will resume ticking this Sunday at 8 pm/Et, when Fox airs 24: Redemption, a TV-movie that bridges the gap between Seasons 6 and 7 (which was delayed a year by the WGA strike). Filmed largely in South Africa, the flick finds Jack compelled to save a group of young orphans from being recruited as soldiers into a guerilla army, all the while dodging a subpoena to appear before the U.S. Senate. Yes, all events occur in real time.
But is it nearing time for Kiefer Sutherland to call it a day? Get his answer to that question, in the video appearing after the jump.

The gimmick of "24" has always been right there in the title: Each season transpires over a single 24-hour day. So how would a two-hour "24" movie work? Not that well, as it turns out. The self-contained “24: Redemption” (7 p.m. Sunday, Wfld-Ch. 32; two stars) is supposed to act as an appetizer for Season 7 of the Fox show, which arrives Jan. 11. And though the dogged “Redemption” transpires mostly in real time -- thus preserving the show’s central concept -- it doesn’t contain as much urgency as this thriller does at its best. Then again, it has been...

"It was amazing," he adds. "It hits you on so many levels. To be in a real environment. You can build a set that looks like Africa, but you aren't going to have the people.

Producers of Kiefer Sutherland's hit drama 24 are urging fans to tune into their forthcoming made-for-tv movie when it finally airs - because a big screen outing for the action franchise will all depend on its ratings.
Sutherland returns to his role as federal agent Jack Bauer in 24: Redemption, a prequel to the upcoming seventh season of the show which returns to U.S. TV in January.
And executive producer Howard Gordon is praying audiences stay in to watch the TV film.
He tells the New York Post, "I would look at (the TV movie) as a dry run for a theatrical release.
"Depending on how well the DVD sells, and how high the ratings are, I think that would be an indicator to the feature film department about what the business prospects for a potential film might be.
"We really did this on a television budget (and) it looks spectacular."
The TV movie is scheduled to air on Sunday.

Robert Carlyle has spoken about his role in upcoming TV movie 24: Redemption. The Trainspotting star plays Carl Benton, an old friend of Jack Bauer's who is working at a school in the fictional middle-eastern country of Sangala. Bauer, who is in exile, decides to help his former colleague but they soon find themselves in trouble. "It all happens in real time over two hours and Jack's faced with a massive dilemma at the end, deciding whether to go back to that 24 world or not. It's not giving too much away to say he goes back, but how he gets back is very interesting. It's a terrific dilemma," Carlyle told TV & Satellite Week. He added that bosses originally planned (more)...

Chicago – After a delay that lasted well in excess of a year, “24” returns to Fox this Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 from 7 to 9 p.m. with a two-hour “special event” (they used to just be called “TV movies”) called “24: Redemption”.
The prequel to season seven of “24” intends to bridge the gap between day six and seven for Jack Bauer and set the plot in motion for what promises to be an interesting reboot of a show that hasn’t been on the air in almost two years.
The 2008 writer’s strike delayed the seventh season of “24” by an entire year. The show, which has never aired under anything but the George Bush presidency, now faces a brave new world when Jack Bauer starts another ticking clock in early 2009.
The writers of this prequel “event” are keenly aware that not only has their show been off the air for a lifetime in the...

The actor thought it would be great fun to work with his Scottish pal on location in Africa, and called to personally offer him the part of missionary Carl Benton.
He says, "I called him and said, 'I'll give you whatever you want. I'll wash your car for a year. I'll babysit the kids.'

Kiefer Sutherland has signed on to make the film Mirrors this summer after the 24 feature film script wasn't finished in time to start shooting. Plans to turn his Jack Bauer TV character into a movie star have been put on hold and allowed the actor to take on another project during the show's summer hiatus. The Sentinel star will play an ex-cop who works security at a mall and discovers something awry in the mirrors of a department store. The Hills Have Eyes director Alexandre Aja has signed on to direct and also wrote the script. The movie will begin shooting in May in Romania, while production on the 24 film has been pushed back to next summer.
