“I’m such a big fan and so I just rewatched the first two seasons,” reveals director Cathy Yan about how she prepared to take on a “Succession” episode of her own in the acclaimed HBO drama series’ third season. The feature director tackled the third episode, “The Disruption,” which also marked her first-ever episode of television. For her efforts, she just received her first Emmy Award nomination, an acknowledgement she calls “a great honor.”
Yan’s approach to her “Succession” episode balanced the series’ well-established visual language with some modifications that best represent her style of filmmaking. The director shares that she tried “to find moments within” the show’s “unique style” to “be a little bit more still and a little wider” because she felt “The Disruption” had “moments of real melancholy.” She explains, “It’s the first time you really see the siblings at each others’ throats…...

This year’s Emmy nominations for Best Drama Directing are interesting in that, unlike in Best Drama Writing, there is no clear frontrunner. Yes, HBO’s “Succession” is likely going to come out on top with wins for writing and series, but the problem it may have in directing is the issue of vote-splitting, as it has three episodes in contention. Therefore, be on the lookout for the other shows like Netflix’s “Squid Game” or Apple’s “Severance,” which could prevail for their directorial choices and lavish sceneries.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Drama Directing Emmy 2022 racetrack odds:
“Squid Game” — 5/1 odds
“Severance” (“The We We Are” by Ben Stiller) — 11/2 odds
“Succession” (“All The Bells Say” by Mark Mylod) — 6/1 odds
“Ozark” (“A Hard Way To Go” by Jason Bateman) — 13/2 odds
“Yellowjackets” (“Pilot” by Karyn Kusama) — 13/2 odds
“Succession” (“Too Much Birthday” by Lorene Scafaria) — 13/2 odds

During one of the most hilariously tragic moments of Succession‘s third season, we witness Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook), the scion of a global media empire, down a drink at a blowout birthday bash and unleash herself on a half-filled dance floor. If, like some of us, you’re not completely caught up on the ongoing dramas within HBO’s popular super-rich family drama “Succession,” have no fear because there’s no spoilers here except to say that in season three, skullduggery continues, and Nirvana’s controversial 1993 song “Rape Me” was used in a pivotal scene last weekend.
Cobain’s widow, erstwhile Hole singer Courtney Love, approves Nirvana syncs and, according to an Instagram story post, she seems quite pleased with the show’s use of the song, saying it is “as if they truly understood” what Cobain meant with the song, and that “I’m sure wherever he is he’s proud of this.”
Her message follows in full:
“I was in the room watching (agog) as this song was written in about an hour , and I’ve never been so proud of approving one of Kurt’s songs , this cue...

Poor Shiv Roy. There are ignominious speeches and then there’s what happened to Shiv during her first meeting addressing the employees of Waystar Royco as the company’s new president. In the most recent episode of HBO’s “Succession,” while trying to reassure the masses that the future of the company was stable, Shiv’s speech was, in effect, shouted down by her brother Kendall (Jeremy Strong), utilizing speakers playing Nirvana’s “Rape Me” — a reference to the company’s previously hidden history of mistreating sex workers, migrant workers, and women in general — to drown out his sister’s words.
It’s HBO’s “Succession” in a nutshell. One Roy family member laying another Roy family member low, no matter the cost. (The very same episode has Shiv emotionally eviscerating her brother via press release.) And central to many of those conflicts is Shiv,...

Well, that didn’t take long.
After last week’s failed attempt to unite the Roy siblings ended with name-calling and maybe-poisoned-donuts, Episode 3, “The Disruption,” sees Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) pull out their knives. Kendall’s come in the form of strategically placed wireless loudspeakers, set to blast Nirvana’s “Rape Me” as a disruption to Waystar Royco’s company-wide town hall, where his sister is trying to calm employee fears about the company’s cruise line scandal. Enraged by her brother’s act of sabotage (and embarrassed to be made the face of it), Shiv responds in not-so-kind, publishing a “greeting card from hell” that lays bare Kendall’s struggles with drug addiction, his failures as a father, and “his own problematic relations with women.” That her “Times New Roman firing squad” goes live right before Kendall guests on “The Disruption...

James Franco is one of the six names in entertainment being celebrated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors on Nov. 2. His vision as a filmmaker and actor is showcased in “The Disaster Artist” as well as HBO’s “The Deuce,” and he’s receiving the Vanguard Award for film. Seth Rogen, who produced “The Disaster Artist” and has been friends with Franco for years, shares his thoughts here on collaborating with his actor friend:
So, before I start this story, I just wanna say that, first, I get that it kind of has an element of me, like, explaining that I thought of a funny joke. So I get that. I’m not, like, oblivious to that. But it’s mostly a story about how great Franco is and what he taught me and all that, so just hang tight.

Gaspar Noé’s bid to shock us into submission with 3D sex is let down by two-dimensional performances
“I want to film that which cinema has rarely allowed itself, either for commercial or legal reasons,” says Gaspar Noé, writer/director of cause celebre Cannes favourites Seul Contre Tous, Irréversible and Enter the Void. For his fourth feature, Noé sets out “to film the organic dimension of being in love”, free from “the ridiculous division that dictates no normal film can contain overly erotic scenes”. Thus we have a Last Tango in Paris-tinged tale of amour fou in which a disconsolate young American in Paris drifts from the responsibilities of fatherhood back into memories of lost love, Noé taking us on a lurid three-way tour of appendages and orifices, physical and psychological.
This of course is nothing new. Since the post-Deep Throat days of Nagisa Oshima’s Ai No Corrida...

The "New French Extremity" filmmaking style has been taking both Europe and the Us by storm. The term refers primarily to French horror films made in the early 2000s, known for extreme violence, unflinching excess, visceral visuals, and a transgressive approach to cinema. They're also a bit of an acquired taste; a viewer with no prior knowledge of this style of filmmaking could easily be put off by their ultraviolent nature. But with a little exposure, the films within can be very enjoyable; they take no prisoners and definitely make a statement. Since French Extremity films are not as well known in the States, we've selected five titles which every horror fan should see. Them (Ils) In Them, we find a schoolteacher and her lover tormented by a group of baddies that will not let up under any circumstances. This film was reportedly a huge inspiration for the American film...

Nirvana is giving birth to "In Utero" once again. Like "Bleach" and "Nevermind" before it, the '90s band's third and final album, "In Utero," will get the deluxe treatment this fall for its twentieth anniversary (yes, you read that correctly, Gen X-ers). 1991's "Nevermind" may have been their breakthrough album, but history has been kind to the initially undervalued "In Utero," which was produced by Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac) and features the singles "Rape Me," "All Apologies" and "Heart-Shaped Box." Details of the re-issue -- including artwork, track listing and price -- haven't been released yet, but like 2011's "Nevermind" box,...

Starring: Karen Bach, Raffaëla Anderson | Written and Directed by Virginie Despentes, Coralie Trinh Thi | Based on the novel by Virginie Despentes
Baise-Moi is not an easy film to watch for a great many reasons, the foremost of which, after all the controversy surrounding the film’s dealt with, is that it’s really quite dull. Based on co-writer/director Virginie Despentes’ novel of the same name, the story follows two victimised, harried young women – occasional porn star Manu and prostitute Nadine – as they escape the misogyny and casual violence of their lives by screwing and killing their way across France.
…And that’s about it. The sex scenes are real (stars Bach and Anderson were both porn actresses up to the time of shooting) but not particularly insightful or revealing (apart from the obvious) but the violence is utterly unconvincing, showcasing lumpy blood effects and removing any sense of verisimilitude we might have previously gained.

★☆☆☆☆ Infamous for its scenes of graphic real sex juxtaposed with acts of brutal violence (the latter thankfully simulated), Virginie Despentes and Coralie Trinh Thi's Baise-moi (2000) is released this week on DVD in its original uncut form, courtesy of cult film specialists Arrow Video. Sadly, thirteen years on from its initial, muted rallying cry, this sleazy exercise in neo-exploitation feels just as vapid and nihilistic now as it did then. Crudely shot on digital with little or no aesthetic consideration, the best that can be said of Despentes and Thi's female-led revenge thriller is that its soundtrack will stay with you - for all the wrong reasons.

30 Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto has filmed an eerie tribute to his musical hero Kurt Cobain to mark the 17th anniversary of the late Nirvana star's death. The rocker/actor has posted a video online of him performing Nirvana's "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Rape Me", dressed like Cobain.
Leto has also posted a tribute on his blog, explaining the bizarre video. He writes, "I heard today (April 5) was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long. So grateful for his contribution and inspiration. Not sure I'd be doing this if it weren't for him."
"I shot a short piece of film when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I'd share it now."

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery -- but they never mention how creepy flattery can be.
Such is the case with Jared Leto. On the occasion of the 17-year anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death actor, 30 Seconds to Mars frontman and Cobain super-fan posted a video of himself singing Nirvana's "Rape Me," in full Cobain regalia.
The lengths Leto goes to to look like a circa-1993 Cobain are tremendous. The hair, the clothes, the mannerisms and guitar plucks are eerily spot-on. If he's going for authenticity, job well done. But if he's going for tasteful, we think he misses the mark.
In the short statement accompanying the video, Leto more-or-less confirms that its a biopic audition reel he never sent in:

This week's "American Idol" in 60 Seconds video recap, embedded below, deals with all the missed opportunities and crushing disappointments our nation faced while watching season 10's "Birth Year Songs" episode.
Casey Abrams' underwhelming "Smells Like a Bad Imitation" Nirvana cover hardly seemed worth the pomp and circumstance it received. The Nirvana on "Idol" seal has been broken, yes, but it was done in an unfortunately inept way. The only thing that would have been more misguided was Scotty McCreery warbling "Rape Me" with his signature smirk.
Instead, Scotty sang his first love song to any teenage girl who has a deep-voice fetish, while Haley Reinhart channeled Miss Yvonne's makeup meltdown with a deranged Whitney Houston cover that ended with Seacrest rubbing his saliva all over her face. (Haley's diabolical plan to steal Seacrest DNA worked.

A Serbian Film, cinema’s bête noire of 2010, is getting a release on Blu-ray and DVD on 3rd January. Some were repulsed by it and others attracted like a moth to a flame. Even critics who didn’t hate it said it was disgusting. Has this made you want to see it yet?
Nothing says Happy New Year like this traumatising arthouse monstrosity. Once seen you’ll never forget it, put it that way.
I didn’t care for it, in fact I hated its guts, FilmShaft’s Cheryl Carter braved a screening for us (read her review here, and Alan Simmons offered an alternative view here.

You can't spit on the host and then show up with your B game. Kanye West knows this, which is why his pair of performances on this weekend's "Saturday Night Live" were among the most arresting in the show's 30-plus year history. You might recall that West took a hard shot at the long-running late night staple on his single "Power," unfavorably name-checking the sketch comedy show with the line "F--- 'SNL' and the whole cast. Tell 'em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass."
But when he showed up to perform the song on Saturday (October 2), Kanye paid the biggest compliment he could to the show: He delivered one of his typically eye-popping visual spectacles, one which will undoubtedly go down in the books. And keep in mind, everybody has played on SNL, from U2 and Abba, to Frank Zappa, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Queen, R.E.M., Public Enemy,...

Filming for Virginie Despentes' Bye Bye Blondie took place over the summer and we finally have some production/set pics gathered from the interwebs (here & here) on a punk, lesbian film we expect to see rocking the Croisette next May. Below, we have Emmanuelle Béart in what would be a pic where her character gets chauffeured around. Below that in the b&w pic, you find you find Dalle with Dp Hélène Louvart (At Ellen's Age) and Despentes. The Les Inrockuptibles article mentions that the release of Baise-moi a decade back hasn't made financing her 2nd film easier, she is filming with a budget of less than 3 million euros and had to cut some key backdrops from the shooting script. Adapted by the director from her eponymous novel, Gloria (Dalle) lives in Nancy. Unemployed, without a family, and with no permanent address, she wastes her days at a local watering hole.

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards less than a month away. The biggest party of the year features nominated clips by Lady Gaga, Drake, Eminem, Jay-z, Ke$ha and Katy Perry and will feature performances by Kanye West, Drake and Florence and the Machine (with many more to be announced). In order to properly prepare yourself for what's to come, every day the MTV Newsroom Blog will deliver a classic moment in the history of the MTV Video Music Awards. Today's installment: Nirvana leave a path of destruction on stage and off.

The shocking images of domestic violence in the new Eminem/Rihanna video for "Love the Way You Lie" have sparked a heated debate online about the depiction of an abusive relationship in a music video. And though Slim Shady has chronicled his contentious relationship with twice-ex-wife Kim Mathers throughout his career, the "Lie" video is certainly not the first time the topic has been dealt with in a video.
The clip for Ashanti's 2003 song "Rain on Me" also depicted the seesaw battle between intense love and physical violence, as the singer moved from hugging and holding hands with her video boo to using makeup to cover the bruises and scars after their altercations. Similarly, Ludacris' collabo...

I met Mel Gibson once or twice for a moment or two, and to his credit the man never made a single anti-Semitic reference to me, or threatened me with sexual assault, or used any virulently racist language during those ten seconds. Also I really dug "Edge Of Darkness" when I caught it on a flight to London the other day. So in the spirit of brotherhood, here's my angry but forgiving playlist for a cracked actor who apparently has some passions in this life that aren't particularly Christ-like. Please know that I'm praying for you, Mel -- in Yiddish. Cracked Actor - David Bowie Oops! . . . In their all-too-brief career as a band, Nirvana managed to deliver a number of performances that were not just memorable and accomplished but historical — the kinds of shows that people still talk about and stick in the collective unconscious even among people who weren't there. There was the wheelchair-assisted concert at the 1992 Reading Festival (recently captured on the just-released Live at Reading DVD), the censor-bating appearance at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards (where bassist Krist Novoselic famously knocked himself unconscious with his own instrument) and their turn on the 1993 season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" (where Kurt Cobain tore into the savage "Rape Me" with reckless abandon).
Then there was their performance on MTV's "Unplugged," which premiered on the network on this day back in '93. Though it is now looked at as a cornerstone moment in the band's career, the "Unplugged" performance was considered a gamble at the time.

That's because, according to The Associated Press, the superstore has refused to carry Breakdown after it asked the band to edit the album for language and content and Green Day refused.

The makers of controversial French film Baise-moi (2000) (trans: "Screw Me") are furious at the decision to censor the movie. The flick - about women who storm across France killing their sexual conquests - has caused uproar in its native country. Film chain MK2 continues to show the raunchy production, which features real sex scenes. Marin Karmitz owner of MK2, says, "This is an unacceptable and manifest attack on freedom of expression." The state council, who gave the film a rare X certificate, say, "Baise-Moi is essentially composed of a succession of scenes of great violence and of scenes of non- simulated sex." They claim there is nothing in the film to put its content into a legitimate context. Producer Phillipe Godreau, who is in danger of bankruptcy, argues, "None of the critics who saw the film thought it was pornographic."...
