Monica Vitti, the Italian star of Michelangelo Antonioni’s film masterpieces, including his trilogy “L’avventura,” “La Notte” and “L’Eclisse,” has died. She was 90.
Vitti’s death was announced by Walter Veltroni, a former film critic and mayor of Rome, who said that her partner of many years Roberto Russo asked him to communicate the news.
“Roberto Russo, [her] partner of all these years, asks me to communicate that Monica Vitti is no longer there. I do it with pain, affection, regret,” Veltroni wrote in a tweet.
In Antonioni’s 1960 art-house classic “L’avventura,” Vitti portrayed a woman searching for her best friend along with her friend’s lover after she goes missing on a boating trip. The film and her performance is a moody, detached masterpiece that would define art-house cinema worldwide in the ’60s and made her an international star, even landing Vitti a BAFTA nomination.

There's a moment early in the new season premiere of the FX crime drama Fargo when a parole officer recalls how he met his fiancée, a slick hustler named Nikki Swango (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead). As the episode flashes back to Nikki at a police station, getting booked and photographed, fans of filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen might experience some deja vu. The situation, the way it's shot, and even the way the crook gets yanked around by the authorities – it's all right out of the Coens' 1987 comedy Raising Arizona.

What can videogames tell us about the volatile east-west relations in the 1980s? Ryan takes a look at 10 unique titles from the Cold War...
Videogames are often talked about in terms of nostalgia or their pioneering place in the medium’s evolution, but how often are they described as social or historical documents? The spread of videogaming’s broader popularity in the 70s to the golden age of arcades in the 1980s took place within the shadow of the Cold War’s final years, so it’s only logical that their content reflects that period in history.
After World War II rumbled to a close in 1945, the post-war period brought with it not an era of unprecedented peace, but one of anxiety and distrust; the Us and the Ussr were two superpowers locked in a state of terse rivalry, and the threat of nuclear...

Jennifer's weekly look-back at the story arc episodes of The X-Files' first season continues with Deep Throat...
This look-back contains spoilers.
1.2 Deep Throat
The X-Files brings out the big guns for its second ever episode. After a pilot that gave us the aliens and the Smoking Man, we have an episode that serves up The Aircraft, and Deep Throat. So after only two episodes, we are left in no doubt that aliens exist and that they have visited earth, putting us always on the side of Mulder and in constant wonder over Scully’s ability to remain skeptical. It was a bold move on the part of the show; who could know if, after getting the money shot, viewers would continue to tune in? It’s a testament to the writers and our beloved actors that the audience is more than willing to see how far the rabbit hole goes,...

The 50s was a golden era of big screen sci-fi. Here’s our pick of the decade’s ten very best genre films…
Off screen and on, the 1950s was a spectacular era for science fiction. In literature, Ray Bradbury kicked off the decade with his masterpiece, The Martian Chronicles, while digest magazines like Galaxy were publishing the works of such sci-fi luminaries as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Robert Heinlein.
In the cinema, every year brought forth a fresh wave of genre pictures, some brilliant in their awfulness (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Robot Monster), others simply brilliant. This article is devoted to the movies in the latter category.
Here, then, is my rundown of my ten favourite science fiction movies of the 50s:
Destination Moon (1950)

For 50 years Sir Patrick Moore has been the BBC’s leading authority on astronomy but it was recently been revealed that during the 1950s Moore starred in a B-movie about UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) in County Monaghan. The film “Them in the Thing”, a low budget science-fiction movie was filmed in 1954 and includes shots of flying saucers hovering over Castle Leslie, in Monaghan. The cinematic treasure was discovered by the Irish Film Institute and was the work of the late Desmond Leslie, whose family were residents in the castle for over 300 years. Leslie had a lifelong passion for extra-terrestrials and in 1953 he wrote a book entitled “Flying Saucers Have Landed”. The next year he set to work on the B-movie with help the neighboring village of Glaslough and his own son, Mark. Mark said “My dad was quite an experienced filmmaker with a high definition camera. He was pretty ambitious...

Hey gang! You've got to watch this incredible retro 1950's trailer for The Avengers! This thing was put together in credibly well, and I couldn't help but have a smile on my face the whole time I was watching it. I would love to see this movie if it actually existed! Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think!
The trailer above was created by YouTube user whoiseyevan and here's what he had to say about it.
What if... the Avengers movie was created years before the actual comic book?
Lost in the annals of time and space, comes this magnificent motion picture of epic proportions. Taking a page from such horror classics as "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" and "House of Frankenstein," Timely Atlas Studios (the precursor to Marvel Studios), created the first superhero movie team-up. "The Avengers" featured an awesome array of characters such as Captain America,...
