All hope is lost in Phil Sheerin’s directorial feature debut. Sheerin teams up with writer David Turpin for this Irish set drama whose tale is fueled by dark secrets. With an opening scene that gets your cogs turning, accompanied with ominous tonal beats we immediately know we are about to embark on a twisted tale.
Sweeping, wind drenched shots of the chilly countryside set the scene for us as we are introduced to the wide-eyed Tom (Anson Boon) and his mother Elaine (Charlie Murphy) as they move into her late father’s farm house. Gothic, melancholy vibes married with frustration and anger dampen their exchanges, as we quickly become aware Elaine has been forced back to the country because of something Tom did. When we see this already quiet introverted boy collecting skulls and happens to stumble upon a human one, two thoughts pop into my mind: that’s...

On January 14, 2018, David and Louise Turpin were arrested and charged with torturing and holding their 13 children captives in what has been dubbed the "House of Horrors." Thousands of miles away, Louise's sister Teresa Robinette was shocked to discover her nieces and nephews were starved, beaten, and abused by their seemingly normal parents. Since the arrest, Teresa, along with her half-brother Billy Lambert, have been struggling to put the pieces together and find out what went wrong. In an exclusive interview with In Touch, Teresa revealed that she hopes the parents get life behind bars for what they did to their family. "Absolutely. I think they deserve everything they've got coming to them," Teresa said of her sister's and brother-in-law's upcoming court case involving over 40 charges of abuse, torture, false imprisonment, and a lewd act on a child under 14. Teresa went on to explain how her family, including her five kids,...

It's been three months since David and Louise Turpin were arrested and charged with torturing and holding their 13 children captive. Now, Louise's sister Teresa Robinette and her half-brother Billy Lambert tell In Touch exclusively that they are trying to adopt the youngest six kids following their experience in the "House of Horrors." "I want to. I'm at the point where I feel like I can help, so I would like to," Billy said before explaining how he hopes to talk to lawyers and Child Protective Services soon. "I think if we can keep them in the family and help them grow as a kid into an adult that would be great." However, Teresa points out that they might not be able to adopt the kids due to financial constraints. "Me and my brother Billy were going try to adopt ourselves, just the younger ones, but we knew there was no...

Seven children of alleged abusers David and Louise Turpin have been released from the Corona Regional Medical Center. According to their lawyer, Jack Osborn, they are now living together in a home in rural California. The specific location, however, is being kept secret. In an interview with ABC News, Jack said the seven oldest Turpin siblings were released on Thursday and transported to their new home, where they each have their own rooms and closets. They also reunited with their family dogs. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "The adult siblings want to be known as survivors, not victims," Osborn told the outlet. "They're joyful, warm, considerate. It's not all about them. They want to hear what's going on with you, and me, and my family," he said. "It's just really fun. It's fun to be around them. Of course, they're really full of joy about their life and the things they get to experience right now.

David and Louise Turpin made headlines when they were arrested for holding their 13 children captive in their California home. Now, two months after the "House of Horrors" couple was charged with torturing and starving their kids, ranging in age from 2 to 29, relatives of the family appeared on The Dr. Oz Show to give an update on the pair behind bars. Louise's sister, Elizabeth Flores, and her cousin Patricia Andreassen spoke on the daytime talk show after visiting Louise in prison. According to Elizabeth, she had no idea the Turpins were "capable of this evil" and revealed that the siblings were victims of childhood abuse themselves — explaining how Louise would sacrifice herself to the family member to protect her sister and cousins from being abused. "That's why it's so shocking that she wouldn't protect her own kids," she explained. It’s a story that’s haunted the nation. Louise and David Turpin...

Early morning darkness still blanketed the streets of suburban Perris, California, on Sunday, Jan. 14, as a window began to creep open at the brown stucco and stone house. A 17-year-old girl slipped out into the yard, and then, at 5:53 a.m, using a deactivated cell phone, she dialed 911.
The call was the culmination of a desperate escape plan the teen had devised with her siblings for more than two years, and when she spoke to the dispatcher, she revealed a shocking truth: She and her 12 siblings were being held against their will by their parents, and some of them were chained.

A neighbor tells People that something always seemed amiss in the Perris, California, home David and Louise Turpin shared with their 13 children — though she never suspected anything criminal was going on.
“Never in a million years did I think they were being chained to beds,” says the neighbor, who spoke to People Tuesday about the allegations against the couple on condition of anonymity. “I thought maybe they weren’t being properly taken care of but I never had anything to go off of; it was just a mom’s stomach feeling that something wasn’t right there.”

A family’s shame marks them forever—their fate sealed by birth, bound by a poem’s rules. They must be locked in their rooms by midnight, never let a stranger through the door, and remain together or else the one who stays dies. Rachel (Charlotte Vega) and Edward (Bill Milner) have lived these edicts like their parents before them and onwards back two centuries. But now on their eighteenth birthday, it’s time for these twins to fulfill their roles within this enduring lineage. Knowing everyone before them died shortly after doing the same forces Rachel to seek courage for an escape. However, unless she coaxes Edward to follow, her freedom cements his demise. So she stays in hopes he’ll muster the will to leave their decrepit home for the first time in a decade.

Irish literature professor and composer David Turpin turns to screenwriting with The Lodgers, a distinctively Gothic ghost story set in early 20th century rural Ireland. Directed by Brian O’Malley, the film has a supernatural focus that also encompasses themes of class conflict and patriotic duty in a society rapidly changing under the weakening grasp of British colonialism.
Part of the challenge of staging an original Gothic tale set in the modern era is marshaling the requisite visual elements that evoke an appropriate period setting. The filmmakers were fortunate to gain access to Loftus Hall, a nearly 700-year-old mansion in southeastern Ireland...
