Coachella Night 2 was, by many accounts, dominated by the festival’s youngest and oldest performers.
Headliner Billie Eilish, 20, delivered what was deemed a strong, history-making performance as the festival’s youngest-ever headliner.
On the other end of the spectrum was the shirtless 68-year old Danny Elfman, who played half a dozen Oingo Boingo songs — many for the first time since the 1980s — as well as high-octane versions of his film and TV work. The latter included an “unhinged hardcore remake” of his Simpsons theme, the Spider-Man main title, “Breakfast Machine” from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, “Ice Dance/The Grand Finale” from Edward Scissorhands, “Alice’s Theme” from Alice in Wonderland as well as his Batman theme and “Jack’s Lament/This Is Halloween/What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Just days after Season 19 finalist Caleb Kennedy was cut from American Idol when a racially insensitive video surfaced, Season 18 fan favorite Doug Kiker — known as the “singing garbageman” – has been arrested on domestic violence charges in Alabama. Kiker was booked on Thursday for domestic violence, per the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office records. TMZ first reported the news.
According the music site A Taste of Country, as of last year Kiker was a married father of two who worked full time on a garbage truck.

The 28-year-old Kiker brought Idol judge Katy Perry to tears with his version of Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” The audition racked up more than 200 million video views across all platforms, according to Yahoo Idol expert, Lyndsey Parker. The dentally-challenged contestant was not long for the show, however, being sent home the first day of Hollywood Week.

A biopic about Seattle-based classic rock band Heart is being produced for Amazon, vocalist Ann Wilson revealed to SiriusXM’s “Volume West” host Lyndsey Parker.
According to Wilson, Carrie Brownstein, guitarist of punk band Sleater-Kinney and star of IFC’s comedy series “Portlandia,” will write and direct the film. Lynda Obst, most known for her work on “Flashdance,” “Adventures in Babysitting and “Sleepless in Seattle,” will produce the project.
The film will chronicle Heart lead vocalists and sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson’s childhood and rise to fame through the 1990s, delving into the band’s bittersweet period in the ’80s, when Heart was most commercially successful but felt it had given up artistic freedom.
While Wilson said she has seen the first draft of the script, the pic is still in early development as a result of the pandemic and casting has not yet been determined.

Heart’s Ann Wilson says a biopic about her band Heart is being produced for Amazon.
The singer of the classic rock band made the announcement to host Lyndsey Parker on SiriusXM’s Volume West show. Wilson said Carrie Brownstein of the punk band Sleater-Kinney and the costar of IFC’s Portlandia, will write and direct.
“I saw the first draft of the script,” Wilson said on the show. “It’s really cool. She’s working with the movie company — Amazon — and with the producer, Linda Obst, who did Sleepless in Seattle.” Obst’s other production credits include Flashdance, One Fine Day, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and the TV series Hot in Cleveland.
The Heart story will cover Ann and sister Nancy Wilson’s rise to one of the biggest bands in the world. No casting decisions have been made, and Ann Wilson said she has no preference.

If Yahoo! Entertainment’s Lyndsey Parker is right, Alisa Ermolaev just grabbed some ‘entertaining moments of screen time’ auditioning for American Idol’s Season 18. Curious viewers can see Alisa’s entire audition on YouTube: but anyone who is interested in her talents may find this bit of screen time painful. Whether Parker’s assumption that Alisa did it for comedy is right or not, it’s hard to know if this is one of Alisa’s favorite moments. Truth is- Alisa has already had a lot of moments on screen. Will Lizzo win Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammys for “Truth Hurts“? Those categories rarely go to hip-hop artists, but “Truth Hurts” is categorized as a pop song at the Grammys, and even if it weren’t the hip-hop glass ceiling was broken last year when Childish Gambino‘s politically charged “This is America” won the top categories. Also, Lizzo took a DNA test; turns out she’s the year’s most nominated artist.
It’s going to be tough, though. Lizzo is nominated in all four general field categories, which almost always makes you the front-runner at least in the Best New Artist race, but for the first time in Grammy history there are two artists nominated in all four races: Billie Eilish also swept the general field, and she also had one of the year’s biggest singles (“Bad Guy”).

As controversy builds around “Richard Jewell” and its depiction of female journalists, it’s nothing new for women music writers on the silver screen.
Although “Crazy Heart,” which premiered 10 years ago this month, was basically 2009’s equivalent of Bradley Cooper’s remake of “A Star Is Born,” it hasn’t had quite the staying power of some other archetypal music-based films. Jeff Bridges won his first Oscar for his portrayal of a washed-up, alcoholic country singer, and Maggie Gyllenhaal was nominated for her performance as the much younger love interest who tries to save him from self-destruction. The main difference in this film written and directed by Scott Cooper (no relation to Bradley) is that Gyllenhaal’s character is not a fellow singer-songwriter ripe for mentoring, but rather an aspiring journalist in search of a story.
Before long, however, business and pleasure intermingle and Bridges and Gyllenhaal wake up in...

The courageous story of how Kim Shattack and The Muffs collaborated to produce their final album, No Holiday, is one of the great tales of perseverance in the face of overwhelming obstacles. Yahoo! Music’s Lyndsey Parker crafts the tale of how Shattuck, who suffered from Als and couldn’t move or talk near the end, still managed to direct her band mates and some hired guns toward the album’s completion.
Elsewhere, possible new music from Coldplay after a long hiatus, the death of a prominent executive and resignation of another, and a story of bullying by a famed coach and broadcaster on a rock legend surfaced.
This week in music:
The Muffs Final Album: Kim Shattuck, the frontwoman for The Muffs was died earlier this month at age 56, was battling Als (sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease) over her last two years. But she was determined to finish the band’s final album,...

Rapper Mac Miller never earned a Grammy nomination during his life, which ended prematurely last September when he suffered a fatal drug overdose at age 26. But the recording academy nominated him posthumously for Best Rap Album for “Swimming.” Will they also honor him with a win when prizes are handed out this Sunday, February 10?
The Grammys have given out posthumous awards before, including quite recently. In 2017 David Bowie swept all four of his nominations for his final album “Blackstar,” including Best Alternative Album. He had died more than a year earlier at the age of 69. Then in 2018 Canadian legend Leonard Cohen claimed Best Rock Performance for “You Want it Darker” about a year and a half after he succumbed to leukemia at age 82. And this year there could be an additional posthumous winner. Chris Cornell died by suicide in 2017 when he was 52, and now he’s up for Best Rock...

Dua Lipa was our Grammy front-runner for Best New Artist before the nominations were announced, but then R&B breakout H.E.R. came out of nowhere with an Album of the Year bid for her self-titled compilation, so now she has moved out front in our New Artist forecasts. Can Dua Lipa overcome that deficit? She’s still the biggest hit-maker in the category, and voters often favor commercial success.
Dua Lipa only has two nominations this year, compared to five for H.E.R. In addition to Best New Artist, Lipa is up for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity” with Silk City, Diplo and Mark Ronson. That doesn’t seem like a lot of broad support from the recording academy, but it’s possible she would have done even better if her biggest hit had been eligible for consideration.

The Oscar for Best Original Song looks like it might be a cakewalk for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” But they face a tougher challenge in the Grammy race for Record of the Year, and as of this writing it’s too close to call. “Shallow” is tied with Childish Gambino‘s “This is America” with leading odds of 9/2. So who really has the lead? Well, it depends on who you ask.
The Expert journalists we’ve polled give the slight advantage to “Shallow.” Three of them are backing the movie tune: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music) and Adnan Virk (ESPN). The other two are forecasting “This is America”: Bonnie Fuller (Hollywood Life) and Glenn Gamboa (Newsday).

Troye Sivan released his second album, “Bloom,” over the summer to rave reviews. Now he’s a Grammy contender for Best New Artist even though his first album, “Blue Neighbourhood,” came out back in 2015 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. But while the Gold Derby users predicting the race thus far appear confident that Sivan will be nominated in that category, might we be underestimating him everywhere else?
As of this writing Sivan ranks third in our Best New Artist forecasts with 11/1 odds, and there will be eight nominees in the category so he looks pretty safe near the top. He could even win since he’s a little more established than rivals like Ella Mai and Dua Lipa. That probably helped Alessia Cara last year; she won even though she already had a couple of years in the public eye. And Meghan Trainor won...

“Everything is Love” had topped our Grammy predictions for Album of the Year since our predictions center opened earlier this year. The collaboration between Beyonce and Jay-z — credited as The Carters — follows up Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and Jay-z’s “4:44,” which explored their marital discord after Jay-z’s infidelity. Both of those were nominated for Album of the Year, but lost. And for Beyonce it was her third defeat. So she has a big Grammy Iou, but she may be denied yet again. Janelle Monae‘s “Dirty Computer” has climbed to first place in our odds.

2017 Tony winner for Best Musical “Dear Evan Hansen” heads into this weekend’s Grammys as the heavy favorite to win Best Musical Theater Album. Since 2001 10 Tony winners for Best Musical also won the Grammy. However, we shouldn’t underestimate the 2017 Tony winner for Best Musical Revival, “Hello, Dolly!” It may have a secret weapon: the Grammys love divas like Bette Midler.
“Dear Evan Hansen” is currently out front with overwhelming odds of 1/10. Those odds are based on the combined predictions of more than 1,900 users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby thus far, including eight Expert journalists from top media outlets who are unanimous that “Evan Hansen” will win: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Glenn Gamboa (Newsday), Edna Gundersen (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Adnan Virk (ESPN) and Chris Willman (Variety).

“City of Stars” from “La La Land” won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2017, so it makes sense that it’s now the Grammy front-runner for Best Visual Media Song. It leads our predictions with 2/7 odds, but can songwriters Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Justin Hurwitz get the better of Lin-Manuel Miranda (“How Far I’ll Go” from “Moana”) at these awards where Miranda is already a two-time winner?
Our official racetrack odds are based on the combined predictions of more than 1,900 users who have entered their picks here at Gold Derby. That includes seven Expert journalists from top media outlets, six of whom think “City of Stars” will win: Glenn Gamboa (Newsday), Edna Gundersen (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Adnan Virk (ESPN), and Chris Willman (Variety). The 2017 Grammy for Best Rock Performance was awarded posthumously to David Bowie for “Blackstar.” In 2018 it looks like there will be another posthumous winner in the very same category, There are two artists in contention who died before these nominations were announced, and according to our latest predictions one of them will win: Leonard Cohen or Chris Cornell.
Cohen died in November 2016 at age 82, but not before releasing his 14th and final album, “You Want it Darker.” He’s up for Best Rock Performance for the title track, and he gets leading odds of 8/13 to prevail. Those odds are based on the combined forecasts of more than 1,800 users who have entered their picks in our predictions center so far. That includes seven Expert journalists from top media outlets, and four of them are betting on Cohen: Glenn Gamboa (Newsday), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), and Chris Willman...

“Despacito” by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber is the Grammy frontrunner to win Record of the Year with 8/13 odds, That’s according to our latest predictions, which are based on the combined forecasts of more than 1,800 total users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby as of this writing. It was one of the biggest hits of 2017, spending a record-tying 16 weeks at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart over the summer. The Grammys often love that kind of cultural phenomenon, but it would be unprecedented for a primarily Spanish-language song to win the top prize, and there are at least two rivals poised to upset.
Among the users making their predictions are nine Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets, and five of them say “Despacito” will prevail: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Edna Gundersen (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling...

The Grammys may have shockingly left Ed Sheeran out of all general-field categories, but that won’t stop him from winning when awards are handed out on Sunday night, January 28. He’s the front-runner to win both of the categories he’s up for: Best Pop Album (“Divide”) and Best Pop Solo Performance (“Shape of You”). But there’s still a chance for an ambush from Kesha or Lady Gaga in both races.
Our Grammy predictions are based on the combined forecasts of more than 1,800 users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby thus far. That includes seven Expert journalists, six of whom are saying Sheeran will win Pop Album: Glenn Gamboa (Newsday), Edna Gundersen (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Adnan Virk (ESPN), and Chris Willman (Variety). Prince's former bandmates threw the ultimate "Purple Rain" party for their fallen leader ... and brought along a bunch of his closest friends. The Revolution got back together to perform a tribute show at First Avenue -- the Minneapolis nightclub where most of the music scenes for "Purple Rain" were shot. Prince's leading lady from the flick, Apollonia Kotero, got onstage too along with Bilal. Apollonia even recreated the classic earring toss from the movie.

Chris Stapleton ("Traveller") is the only Grammy nominee for Best Country Album who also contends for Album of the Year, so that should make him the clear frontrunner to win this award, right? But the other two experts, Phil Gallo and Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), think Kacey Musgraves ("Pageant Material") will pull off an upset, giving her 10/3 odds. So why are they betting against Stapleton? It is true that Albu...'...

Alabama Shakes' "Sound and Color" is the only nominee for Best Alternative Album that is also nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys. Does that make them a shoo-in in this category? Muse has been in this race before. The British band won this category for "The Resistance" in 2010 and were nominated for "The 2nd Law" in 2012. The Grammys are next Monday (February 15) and according to our racetrack odds it'll be a good night for Taylor Swift, but it won't be a clean sweep for the bestselling singer-songwriter. Our odds favor a Record of the Year win for the ubiquitous "Uptown Funk" by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars. -Break- Subscribe to Gold Derby Breaking News Alerts & Experts’ Latest Oscar Predictions We have nine Expert journalists forecasting the Grammys, and seven of them are betting on "Uptown Funk," giving it 4/11 odds: Phil Gallo, Glenn Gamboa (Newsday), Edna Gundersen, Tom O'Neil (Gold Derby), Lyndsey Parker (Yahoo Music), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby) and Chris Willman. This would be Mars's first win in this category after three previous nominations.
