As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.
Oh it's the beginning of the end. #insideno9

Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.
That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.
Oh, and if it seems like most of our favorite performances of the year were from women? You don’t know the half of it. Had we had more time or space, we would have loved to write about Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval...

Thank goodness for Taskmaster’s New Year Treat, our annual dose of daft mayhem to lift us out of both our Nye hangover and the ‘Christmas is officially over’ doldrums. And to soften the blow of Taskmaster’s particularly funny series 16 ending, they’ve just announced who Taskmaster’s New Year Treat class of 2024 will be.
It’s a quirky but eminently promising line-up: Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden, TV and radio presenter Zoe Ball, wildlife expert Steve Backshall, multiple-mobo-nominated musician Kojey Radical and award-winning actor and future star of Doctor Who series 14, Lenny Rush.
Let’s learn a bit more about them:

What’s your favourite Taskmaster task? Did it result in a delicious failure or a triumphant win? Was it a crafty solution from a cunning mind, or a bonkers, impractical response that could only have come from the brain of John Kearns?
We asked our writers to nominate their favourites, in order (and not including Prize Tasks because that’s already been covered here), and collated the results into the Top 50 below. With 15 series proper, two Champion of Champions specials, and multiple New Year’s Treat episodes, there were approximately 89,000 tasks to choose from, hence a nice, neat 50.
If you’re at all concerned about the scientific robustness of our approach, rest assured that Google Sheets formulas were used in the creation of this list, resulting in an entirely accurate ranking order that cannot be questioned. Well alright, you can question it.
So, what are the best Taskmaster tasks of all time?...

The U.K. edition of iconic game show “Password” will bow imminently on broadcaster ITV, and new countries are being added.
Variety can reveal that the Fremantle-owned format is getting versions in Greece (Alpha TV), Hungary (TV2), Israel (Channel 13), Mexico (TV Azteca) and Slovakia (TV Joj).
The word association game, which first launched on CBS in 1961, sees captains and contestants try to guess their teammates’ passwords with the help of one-word clues. The U.K. version will offer a cash prize in the final. It benefits from the presence of three eminent comic talents: Stephen Mangan as host and BAFTA winners Alan Carr and Daisy May Cooper as team captains.
The most recent U.S. version, starring Keke Palmer and Jimmy Fallon, launched last year on NBC and quickly became one of the network’s most popular shows. The U.K. version will have its own distinct flavor.

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Fancy watching a no-nonsense Yorkshire cop on the brink of retirement finally taking down her nemesis? How about an Oxford scholar pitting his wits against a decades-long conspiracy? These are the premises for just two of the exciting British TV shows about to arrive in the US but that’s not all: there’s also globe-trotting sci-fi with big ideas, a fast-paced dark comedy, a remarkable depiction of marriage by two British acting stalwarts, and more besides.
From cosy crime to original comedy, here are the UK TV highlights coming to America:
Happy Valley Series 3

It was a big night for Irish talent at this year’s British version of the Emmys, the BAFTA TV Awards, which were doled out at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, two Irish series — – “Bad Sisters” and “Derry Girls” — won a pair of prizes as did the telefilm “I Am Ruth.”
“Derry Girls” won Best Scripted Comedy for its fourth and final season, which was a lovely parting gift for writer and creator Lisa McGee. The show beat out “Ghosts,” “Big Boys,” and “Am I Being Unreasonable?” although the latter did pick up the prize for Best Comedy Actor for 14-year-old Lenny Rush. He edged out Matt Berry (“What We Do In The Shadows”), Joseph Gilgun (“Brassic”), Stephen Merchant (“The Outlaws”), Jon Pointing (“Big Boys”), and Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”).

If you have to ask whether you’re being unreasonable, you probably are. And who’s asking that question in Hulu’s Am I Being Unreasonable? Everyone.
In the first moments of the premiere (now streaming on Hulu), we witness a romantic train station flirtation. A woman enters a soon-to-be departing train and a man kisses her goodbye under its threshold. Outside, snow falls in heaping flakes. Romantic, right? Until the doors close on the man’s jacket and he’s stuck dangling outside the train, like some kind of sick holiday ornament. Despite the woman’s frantic efforts to free him,...

In the United Kingdom, Daisy May Cooper is a certified television star, a familiar enough presence as both an actress and series creator that she appeared on the British version of The Masked Singer earlier this spring. She was the Otter.
Had Cooper been revealed on the American Masked Singer in February, Jenny McCarthy probably would have been totally flummoxed. Cooper might have been familiar from a pair of Armando Iannucci projects — The Personal History of David Copperfield and Avenue 5 — but instead of This Country, an award-winning comedy she starred in and created with brother Charlie, we got U.S. remake Welcome to Flatch; and instead of the British smash hit Taskmaster, on which Cooper contributed to the 10th season, we got the American version of Taskmaster, which bombed in its lone Comedy Central season.

Could BBC One’s Rain Dogs be the first time a fairly explicit “glory hole” scene, complete with slurpy sound effects, has been transmitted on British television? The nearest precedent I can think of was a transmission of the biopic of the outrageous Sixties playwright Joe Orton, Prick Up Your Ears, but, from memory, there was no full-on fellatio in the bogs depicted. So Rain Dogs has at least made its mark for that.
That sounds a bit dismissive, but it’s the reverse. Sleaze – proper, depressing, tawdry sleaze; sleaze infused with danger and drink – is rarely portrayed with much conviction on the telly, but this eight-part darker-than-dark sort-of-comedy makes you just as uneasy as our hero of the underworld, peep show performer Costello. The not-so-good-time girl is played with the usual brilliance by Daisy May Cooper. After Cooper’s delusional, unloved, Kerry in This Country through the gaslit Nic in Am I Being Unreasonable?...

Amanda Holden has raised eyebrows with her “bizarre” tribute to Paul O’Grady, who has died, aged 67.
The Heart Radio presenter reacted to news of the TV host and comedian’s death while co-hosting her show with Jamie Theakston on Wednesday (29 March).
Holden, who appeared alongside O’Grady on an episode of his ITV series For the Love of Dogs in 2021, said she was in “complete shock” over the news.
She called him “really funny” and “very witty”, stating that “everything that came out of his mouth was brilliant”.
However, Holden then said: “Do you know what I loved about him? He was not woke in any way. He had massive opinions on everything, which, I love people like that.”
Listeners have taken umbrage with Holden’s use of the word “woke”, arguing it was out of context and had no place being used for such a tribute.

The creator and star ofThis Country and Am I Being Unreasonable? trained at the institution in the mid-2000s.

Jeremy Renner has shared his delight in finally being reunited with the snowplough that ran him over.
On New Year’s Day, the Avengers star was rushed to hospital after being crushed by a large plough outside his home in Nevada. At the time, he was attempting to save his nephew from being hit by the vehicle.
Renner sustained blunt chest trauma and later revealed he had broken more than 30 bones in the accident.
Since the accident, the plough had been impounded by the police. But on Thursday (23 March) night, Renner shared the good news that the piece of machinery was coming home.
Sharing a picture of the plough on Instagram Stories, Renner wrote: “She’s finally making her way home!” alongside a prayer-hands emoji.
“The cat [gets] a police escort… Feels like The Green Mile!” he captioned a second video, which showed the last vehicle travelling home along a main road.

Daisy May Cooper is under consideration to take over from Dame Judi Dench as M in the next iteration of the James Bond franchise, per multiple reports.
The Gloucestershire-born actor and writer is best known for her West Country comedy series This Country, which she wrote and starred in.
According to The Sun, Cooper’s potential casting came about after Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s work on No Time to Die paved the way for more comedy in the franchise.
“Daisy is a close pal of Phoebe, whose involvement in Bond was such a success that it sparked an unlikely conversation,” a source told the tabloid.
“Suddenly the production team were getting excited about the prospect of really taking ‘M’ in a different direction.”
Eon Productions chief Barbara Broccoli is currently on the search for the next 007 after Daniel Craig’s retirement.

The BBC has decided not to resume filming Top Gear after presenter Freddie Flintoff was injured in a horrific accident during production.
The cricketer-turned-presenter was airlifted to hospital last December after crashing while filming a car review at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome, home of the Top Gear test track.
In a statement, the BBC said: “Under the circumstances, we feel it would be inappropriate to resume making series 34.
“We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.
“We understand this [halting the show] will be disappointing for fans, but it is the right thing to do, and we’ll make a judgement about how best to continue later this year.”
The broadcaster added that it would be conducting a health and safety review of the show.

Sam Neill has described Robin Williams as both the “funniest” and “saddest person I’ve ever met”.
Writing in his memoir Did I Ever Tell You This?, the Jurassic Park star recalled working with the late actor on the 1999 film Bicentenial Man and the “great chats” they would have during filming.
Describing Williams as “irresistibly, outrageously, irrepressibly, gigantically funny”, Neill wrote (via People): “We would talk about this and that, sometimes even about the work we were about to do.”
Neill said that, despite Williams being able to switch his funny side “on”, he could “sense the dark space inside” the Good Will Hunting star.
Neill said that Williams was also “the saddest person I ever met” who appeared to be “inconsolably solitary, and deeply depressed”.
“He had fame, he was rich, people loved him, great kids – the world was his oyster,” Neil wrote. “And yet I felt more...

Christina Applegate eviscerates Candace Owens for criticising underwear ad featuring wheelchair user
Christina Applegate has admonished Candace Owens on Twitter over her criticism of an underwear advert featuring a model in a wheelchair.
In a recently-resurfaced clip from 2022, the conservative commentator took issue with Kim Kardashian’s Skims Adaptive clothing line, which offers products for those with limited mobility.
Applegate – who announced her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2021 – responded to the clip on Wednesday night (22 March).
“Yes late tweet. But woke to see the most horrifying thing. This Candace person making comments about companies who see we need help. It’s f---ing gross,” the Anchorman star wrote.
“I thank skims and Tommy and Guide beauty and @neowalksticks for seeing us. To you #youshouldknowbetter”
In a separate tweet, she continued: “Going to try and sleep but my rage is keeping me awake. Candace Owens, do you know when you have seen pictures of me how f***ing hard it was to get my clothes on?...

Would the Am I Being Unreasonable actor make a great M? Sure. But not if it means the 007 franchise is turning into Austin Powers
You can have the good news first. At last, the ceaseless pounding drumbeat of speculation over who will play the next James Bond has paused. A semi-official moratorium has fallen over the shrieking clickbait dedicated to wondering aloud whether Aaron Taylor Johnson or Idris Elba or about eight people from Game of Thrones or any actor seen in public in a suit will be chosen to succeed Daniel Craig as James Bond.
Now for the bad news: this has happened because there is now a ceaseless pounding drumbeat of speculation over whether or not Daisy May Cooper from This Country will be the next M. For this week, everyone has suddenly decided that this is a thing, even though it probably isn’t.
