With all the strike talk about low pay, WGA and SAG-AFTRA members are starting to play a little show me yours and I’ll show you mine when it comes to their (paltry) residual checks.
Just about everyone has a story to share about how their residuals took a serious nose dive with the advent of new media. A recent story in The New Yorker about how actors on the once successful Orange is the New Black never enjoyed a financial windfall only exacerbated the angst felt by actors and writers these days.
Here’s a sampling of their stories:
Jason Belleville (Home Economics): “I wrote on the first season of Cobra Kai, which is one of the biggest shows in Netflix history. I think I have more money in my pockets right now than any residuals I’ve seen from that. I was also was an executive producer...

It’s Day 4 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 77 of the WGA strike.
“Discover the past, live the present and fight the future,” was an apt message from The X-Files‘ 1998 spinoff movie and it’s one that could be applied to the current actors and writers strike.
It seems timely, then, that some of those responsible for writing and starring in the long-running sci-fi hit, were outside Fox as part of an X-Files reunion.
Star David Duchovny told Deadline that there are so many issues to try and get through, particularly AI. “I think the powers that be have a lot on their plate right now with trying to figure out, kicking the can down the road with the AI stuff. What is it capable of? They’re philosophical questions,” he said.
Duchovny also highlighted streaming residuals. “We always worked in a business that rewarded success and didn’t want failure.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Big Little Lies” Season 2, Episode 6, “The Bad Mother.”]
So, it all comes down to… this? A courtroom inquisition with Nicole Kidman’s abused wife acting as her own attorney against Meryl Streep’s aggrieved, possibly vengeful grandma; one parent questioning the other for the title of “The Good Mother,” aka the legal guardianship of two young boys? Even if we don’t bring in the behind-the-scenes knowledge of how this season came about, Episode 6, “The Bad Mother,” feels like David E. Kelley throwing his hands up in the air and screaming, “Fuck it! Let’s just make it about the law!”
After all, Kelley, a former attorney, has been writing about lawyers and courtrooms and legalese for more than three decades. The “L.A. Law,” “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Legal,” “Harry’s Law,” and “Goliath” creator has made it his “Practice” to place as many dramatic confrontations as possible between a pacing attorney and a cowering witness.

Big Little Lies is cranking up the intensity in its second installation with a deeper dive into a past recurring character: Tori, played by Sarah Sokolovic. Poor Tori didn't get to do much last season, except harbor suspicions about her husband Joseph and his coworker Madeline having an affair. In the season two premiere, she bumps into Madeline's husband at the supermarket and ever so casually shares news about her new breasts (cue the awkward laughter). We've yet to learn about what Tori has in store this season, but we certainly know a thing or two about the actress portraying her.
A theater veteran, Sokolovic started off her career in shows such as The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World, Detroit, and A Streetcar Named Desire after graduating from Yale School of Drama. Around the same time, the actress picked up a few roles on the small screen, including one-off parts...

HBO released the first trailer for a second season of its hit series “Big Little Lies” on Sunday… and the Monterey Five are struggling with the haunting lie that’s followed them from Season 1.
The moms of Monterey returns to HBO on June 9, and Meryl Streep is coming to Monterey to seek out the truth of what happened to her son, formerly played by Alexander Skarsgård.
“It’s gonna get us, it’s gonna get us all,” Zoë Kravitz’s Bonnie says early on in the trailer.
“What are we talking about?” asks Reese Witherspoon’s character Madeline. “The lie,” Kravitz responds.

Now that HBO has revealed “Game of Thrones” will be returning for its eighth and final season in April — though the official premiere date is still Tbd — it’s high time the premium cabler tells “Big Little Lies” fans when they’ll get Season 2 of their fave series. Except maybe “Bll” star Nicole Kidman already beat them to the punch.
Kidman — who plays Celeste on HBO’s adaptation of the Liane Moriarty novel — made a quick appearance alongside her husband on CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” Dec. 31, and dropped what she believes to be the premiere month for the sophomore installment of “Big Little Lies.”

“Big Little Lies” was supposed to be a miniseries; it wasn’t supposed to return for a second season. But it proved to be such a big hit that HBO just couldn’t let it go.
After much speculation and a triumphant awards season, HBO made it official and ordered another seven episodes full of mom drama, lies (of all shapes and sizes) and stunning beachfront property.
Since the first season covered the entirety of Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel, little is known about the direction the second season will take or how the show will build upon the already-told story. But with the series currently in production, we do know some of what “Big Little Lies” Season 2 will look like. Here’s everything we know so far.

1. Most of the cast is returning
As executive producers in addition to their on-screen roles, Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman were the first announced to return to Monterey, but they were followed by nearly all of the show’s original cast.
Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz will also star in the second season, and they’ll be joined by Adam Scott, James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling, Iain Armitage, Kathryn Newton, Robin Weigert, Sarah Sokolovic and Merrin Dungey.
2. Even Alexander Skarsgard
Skarsgard’s character Perry, the abusive husband of Kidman’s Celeste, died at the end of the first season, but according to TV Line, he is still expected to appear “in some capacity.”
When asked about the report by People, the actor replied, “I don’t even know if I’m really dead or not.”

3. Newcomers include Meryl Streep and Bonnie’s parents
As though a second season pick up wasn’t surprising enough, “Big Little Lies” shocked everybody when it announced its newest cast member: Meryl Streep.
For the first time on television since 2003’s “Angels in America,” the three-time Oscar-winner will play Perry’s mother Mary Louise Wright, who arrives in Monterey over worry about her mourning grandchildren.
Kidman shared the first photo of Streep in character (complete with one hell of a wig) on Instagram:

And though Kravitz’s character Bonnie saw her role reduced from the book in Season 1, it seems like Season 2 will take a deeper dive into her backstory.
“Weeds” alum Martin Donovan and “In the Heat of the Night” star Crystal Fox have signed on to recur in the upcoming episodes as her parents, Martin and Elizabeth, though further character and plot details are being kept tightly under wraps.

4. Here’s what the other characters will be up to
Much of the plot remains unknown — as the show will go beyond its source material in Season 2 — but the episodes will be written by showrunner David E. Kelley and are partially based on story by Moriarty herself.
HBO has teased some of the season’s arcs in character descriptions, which you can read below:
Nicole Kidman as Celeste Wright: Reeling from her husband Perry’s death, Celeste is adrift, but determined to fight for her family and find the woman she once was.
Reese Witherspoon as Madeline Martha Mackenzie: Finding that good intentions don’t always yield good consequences, Madeline confronts the truth of Perry’s death, while coming to terms with her own marriage and traditional notions of family.
Shailene Woodley as Jane Chapman: While processing Perry’s sudden death, Jane is trying to build a new life for herself and Ziggy.
Laura Dern as Renata Klein: The epitome of control, Renata is now faced with new challenges in her marriage.
Zoë Kravitz as Bonnie Carlson: Bonnie struggles with Perry’s death and is forced to face demons in her past.
Meryl Streep as Mary Louise Wright: Concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son Perry’s death, Mary Louise arrives in Monterey searching for answers.
Adam Scott as Ed Mackenzie: Ed is forced to confront major challenges in his marriage to Madeline.
James Tupper as Nathan Carlson: Nathan copes with a complicated turn of events in his marriage and with his eldest daughter Abby.
Jeffrey Nordling as Gordon Klein: Gordon faces the consequences of a big mistake and risks losing everything along the way.
Iain Armitage as Ziggy Chapman: Ziggy starts second grade and continues to be the light of Jane’s life.
5. Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman got big pay bumps to return
Because the show was conceived as a miniseries, HBO did not have options for the cast beyond the first season. And, as The Hollywood Reporter reported in January, landing deals for the cast to return came at a steep price for the network.
Witherspoon alone, whose producing slate has exploded in recent months with high-profile projects at Apple and now Hulu, is earning “in the $1 million-an-episode ballpark” for the second season, along with fees for serving as an executive producer and points off the backend. Kidman, also an executive producer, is said to have a similar deal.
That led to a brief controversy for the network when an HBO exec said the company had been “sort of raped” financially by the negotiations, comments for which she later apologized.
6. David E. Kelley will write the show; Andrea Arnold will direct
As noted above, Kelley will write and executive produce the second season, as he did the first. But Season 1 director Jean-Marc Vallée (who retains an Ep credit) will be replaced by Andrea Arnold.
Arnold won an Academy Award in 2005 for directing the short film “Wasp” and has since gone on to direct a number of acclaimed films including “Red Road,” “Fish Tank” and a 2011 adaptation of “Wuthering Heights.”
Her most recent film, 2016’s “American Honey,” took home the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was hailed by critics as the film that proved Arnold to be one of the industry’s best working directors.
7. It will probably premiere in 2019
HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirmed in an interview with THR in January that with filming on “Big Little Lies” beginning in March, the show would not be back on the air in 2018.
So fans will have to wait until next year to watch Season 2, along with the final run of “Game of Thrones” and the long-awaited third season of “True Detective.”

Round two! Big Little Lies fans have reason to celebrate because Reese Witherspoon's hit show is returning for a second season. Originally, the HBO drama was created as a limited series based on the Liane Moriarty novel of the same name. But, after Bll received both critical and commercial acclaim — the network decided to renew it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Season 2 will kick off sometime in 2019 with production beginning in the spring of 2018. Last year, the show's creator David E. Kelly hinted a second season was in the works. "We're kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent [and] get the band back together," he explained. "It's just a lot of logistical things. But I'm optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do." Keep scrolling to learn more about Big Little Lies Season 2! Though the ratings have come down quite a bit, the series has remained one of the cable channel's most-watched shows. Will it be renewed for a sixth season or, will it be cancelled instead? On Homeland, former CIA officer Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) was one of the best in her field, despite being bipolar. Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

Homeland Season 5 premieres with Carrie out of the CIA game and living in Germany. Nothing bad could happen there, right?
This review contains spoilers.
5.1 Separation Anxiety
Nowadays, beginning a new season of Homeland is a bit like starting over with an anthological show. Similar to American Horror Story and True Detective, the later seasons of Homeland rarely enjoy major or direct connective tissue from year-to-year other than Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin’s reliably stellar performances; every season is a new topical, “ripped from the headlines” threat, and each do-over mostly dismisses story threads from the previous year.
For example: whatever happened to Javadi after he became the CIA’s mole in Iran? Also, what effect did Saul being a hostage have on his getting a new job at the CIA (where he is apparently back in a command position)? Also, are we ever going to find...

Homeland returned Sunday with its biggest twist yet: During the nearly-three year time jump that preceded the Season 5 premiere, Carrie Mathison transitioned into a… happy human being.
When we first see her, Claire Danes’ tortured terrorist hunter is enjoying a virtually drama-free life in Germany, one that includes a new (smart and stable!) boyfriend, a daughter she no longer wants to drown in a bathtub, and a civilian job that is both fulfilling and, most importantly, safe.

Wyoming Directed by Danya Taymor, Written by Brian Watkins Theater for the New City 155 First Avenue, New York, NY 10003 January 15 - 31, 2015
Spaces on the set of Brian Watkins's new play, Wyoming, are defined almost exclusively by tables -- bar tables, diner tables, kitchen tables, locations that often forge and sometimes force connections between people. Tables are just part of a range of everyday objects, including a locked box, a child's headphones, and a slide projector, that take on symbolic resonance in this meditation on time, choice, secrecy, and -- or perhaps through the lens of -- family. Wyoming, set primarily in the mid-'90s, centers on a Thanksgiving dinner during which the past of the particular family in question becomes unavoidable in various ways and for various, interwoven reasons. This breaking both of bread and of silences is directed by Danya Taymor, niece of the iconic Julie, and features original music from Robin Pecknold,...
