The biopic has a long and successful history. Cast a net over the last 60 years and you'll find all manner of enduring works, ranging from "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Bonnie and Clyde" to "Serpico," "Amadeus," and "Schindler's List."
You needn't look back that far, though. The last two decades have seen biographical dramas such as "A Beautiful Mind," "The King's Speech," "12 Years a Slave," and "Green Book" all take home the Oscar for best picture. Then, there are the best actor winners. In the last 10 years, Daniel Day-Lewis, Matthew McConaughey, Eddie Redmayne, Gary Oldman, and Rami Malek have all won Oscars for biographical performances.
However, none of the biopics below won a "big five" Oscar. These films may have earned critical acclaim and even found a small audience, yet they have been left in the rough compared to such films as "The Imitation Game" and "Darkest Hour." Here are...

Netflix is set to spotlight the gruesome true crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for the third installment of "Conversations With a Killer" and the streamer already has a premiere date. Season three, titled "The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes," will debut on Oct. 7, according to Netflix. The three-part documentary is not to be confused with Netflix's other project, "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" from "American Horror Story"'s Ryan Murphy and Evan Peters.
Unlike the forthcoming limited series (which has yet to set a release date), "The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes" will feature "never-before-heard audio interviews between Dahmer and his defense team," which delve "into his warped psyche while answering these open questions of police accountability through a modern-day lens," per Netflix.

Violence and psychopathy are meant to be married. The labels “serial killer”, “murderer”, and “psycho” immediately conjure up the images of grotesque lunatics with (often literally) an axe to grind. Horror and exploitation movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre covered this beautifully – showing every bone, every hair, every flap of skin; concluding with a man in a mask dancing around with a rusty chainsaw. Torture Porn and Splatter Films entered the 21st century with a franchise interest for drowning the screen in blood and guts – as in the Saw franchise, which in its (as of last year) eight installations developed many ludicrous ways of a psycho ripping people, and their bodies, apart.
But in recent psycho-dramas, such a gory attitude to constructing serial killers isn’t such a common tact. Like the infamous ear-cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs, filmmakers appear to be panning away from extreme violence and focusing on...

“All I know is that I wanted to see what the insides of these animals looked like,” says serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, recalling his teenage pastime of finding animals and cutting them up. The opening scene of My Friend Dahmer – the new film about his school years – has Jeffrey (Ross Lynch) stare out of a schoolbus window at a dead carcass lying mangled in the road. Later, Dahmer shows two teenagers his collection of dead animals kept in jars of acid.
These gruesome early experiences could be seen as tame compared to the 17 murders he committed between ’78 and ’91, many of which involved rape and dismemberment, but the film’s foreshadowing is frightening enough, as writer-director Marc Meyers slowly reveals certain snapshots of Dahmer’s adolescence – developing like polaroid pictures. He goes to school like everyone else, feels awkward like everyone else, tells jokes like everyone else – and we know what...

HBO has picked up U.S. rights to two indie features: the romantic comedy The Boy Downstairs, starring former Girls actress Zosia Mamet; and My Friend Dahmer, Marc Meyers' adaptation of John Backderf's graphic novel, which features ex-Disney Channel star Ross Lynch as future serial killer Jeff Dahmer.
FilmRise, which released both titles theatrically in the U.S. and is handling sales of the films, announced the HBO deal at international television market Miptv, which kicked off Monday in Cannes. Both films will air on HBO later this year.
