The Ultimate Fighting Championship (Ufc) has been busy thinning the heard this week.
MMAMania has reported that the organization announced that it has released five mixed martial artists from its roster. The chopping block is highlighted by the departure of welterweight Charlie Brenneman and Japanese featherweight Michihiro Omigawa, both of which have figured prominently on the Ufc’s main cards in recent years. Unfortunately, their recent losing skids have forced the decisionmakers over at head office to part ways with the fighters.
The Ufc also gave Eiji Mitsuko, Tommy Hayden, and Walel Watson their walking papers. All three have fallen on rough times recently and likely saw the move coming.
The organization has not embarked on a roster slimming in quite some time and this move may be a sign of things to come. Ufc President Dana White has always emphasized the fact that fighters on his roster need to...

For those watching Ufc 152 on Saturday night the sight of former Ufc light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort locking in an armbar that was seconds away from snapping Jon Jones‘ arm was cringe worthy. There was no doubt that his arm was damaged after that point but the champion was able to survive and came back from the brink of defeat in the first round, submitting his veteran opponent via americana arm lock in the fourth round.
Today, MMAJunkie reported that Jones had been told by doctors that he may have nerve damage to his right bicep. While Jones’ impressive victory had many discussing the reigning champion’s next opponent, Bones’ arm will likely sideline him at least until the end of the first quarter of 2013.
With all the injuries plaguing the sport at the moment the damage sustained by one of the Ufc’s most marketable fighters compounds Ufc President Dana White’s frustration.

With just over 24 hours left before Ufc 152 gets underway at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, The Star is reporting that tickets are still available. This may come as a surprise considering the fact that the main card includes two Ufc title bouts and the main event features Jon Jones, one of the organization’s most polarizing figures.
The recent cancellation of Ufc 151 due to Jones’ refusal to take a fight against Chael Sonnen on short notice may have led some to quickly blame Jones and his trainers for the black eye that the sport has received in the last few weeks.
However, the failure to sell out the Air Canada Centre cannot be solely placed at the feet of the light heavyweight champ. Rather, it is more likely that the card’s initial lack of star power, mixed with a perceived oversaturation of mixed martial arts in recent months...

Forget Ufc middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Georges St-Pierre disclosed to the Leader-Post, albeit jokingly, that a face off with Jean-Claude Van Damme would be the superfight he would have wanted.
“I would have liked to fight Jean-Claude Van Damme in ‘Bloodsport’. That would have been my dream fight, in an Mma cage,” said St-Pierre
While this is obviously nothing but a fantasy, Jcvd was recently spotted at Tri-Star Gym in Montreal training with St-Pierre in preparation for his role in The Expendables 2. Undoubtedly, both stars likely hold a mutual respect for one another due to their similar backgrounds: both have a passion for martial arts and have French speaking roots.
Although this match up would have been fun to see on the silver screen in the 80’s during Van Damme’s prime, in reality, St-Pierre is preparing to return from a lengthy departure from Mma due to a knee injury.

After the disaster that was Ufc 151, where the organisation had to cancel an entire card for the first time in its history, Ufc chairman Dana White will be hoping Ufc 152 delivers.

The current John Laurinaitis and Vince McMahon storyline could end up merged with the Triple H and Brock Lesnar feud at WWE SummerSlam.
F4WOnline.com reports that one idea WWE creative has, and it does seem pretty clear from the current storylines that this is the current direction, that Vince McMahon will fire Laurinaitis at Sunday’s WWE No Way Out pay-per-view when John Cena defeats The Big Show. From there, the storyline would play out that Laurinaitis would return soon later with Brock Lesnar, Paul Heyman and possibly Big Show as a stable, thanks to some help from the WWE Board of Directors.
Vince McMahon would then side with his son-in-law Triple H and perhaps the ownership of the WWE would be on the line when the expected Triple H vs Brock Lesnar match happens at WWE SummerSlam 2012 in August. McMahon would be in Hhh’s corner with Laurinaitis in Lesnar’s.

As ever in pro wrestling it is hard to know where “the shoot” starts and “the worked angles” begins…
F4WOnline reports that sources in both WWE and Ufc are skeptical over just how bad Brock Lesnar and Ufc President Dana White’s recent meeting went. White claimed last week that the recent talk with Lesnar was one of the worst they had ever ever shared and was not part of a Ufc/WWE agreement to further Lesnar’s current “quit” storyline with the WWE.
Sources within WWE almost universally agree that Vince McMahon has an iron-clad contract with Lesnar which rules him out of fighting for Ufc until after WrestleMania 29 on on April 7, 2013. Ufc officials however are suggesting that Lesnar’s limited dates deal with the WWE is non-exclusive and that he and Dana White were discussing a potential fight, perhaps for the Autumn after WWE SummerSlam in August,...

In a further update to Brock Lesnar having “nuclear heat” with WWE officials for attending the Ufc 146-pay-per-view and meeting Ufc President Dana White without any prior notice, F4WOnline.com has shed more light on how Vince McMahon reacted to the situation.

Ufc President Dana White has revealed that his recent meeting with Brock Lesnar after Ufc 146 didn’t go well. In a much publicised visit, the former Ufc Heavyweight Champion attended the pay-per-view some weeks ago, much to the annoyance of the WWE where he is currently contracted to perform on a limited basis until next May’s WrestleMania 29.
White didn’t reveal exactly what was said at the meeting but did tell MMAJunkie.com that it wasn’t pleasant;
“The meeting did not go well. Probably the worst meeting we’ve ever had with Brock Lesnar, and I haven’t talked to him since. It’s one of those things (where) it’s not worth getting into it publicly… It’s not worth getting into the B.S. over it.”

Brock Lesnar reportedly has “nuclear heat” in the WWE stemming from his much publicised appearance at the Ufc 146 pay-per-view.
Vince McMahon had no advanced knowledge that Lesnar was planning to visit the event and speak with Ufc President Dana White and it was a surprise to everyone in the WWE when he turned up at the show. Even before Ufc 146, Lesnar had been a pain in the ass for McMahon to deal with behind-the-scenes, which all started at the WWE Extreme Rules pay-per-view backstage after John Cena cut a promo to the crowd instead of being stretched to the back after a Lesnar beating, as scripted.
In truth, Lesnar was always difficult to work with on his first run ten years ago but with him making far more money and working less dates, he’s almost impossible to work with now. He still hates wrestling and prefers real, competitive sports...

EA has just finished their respective E3 press conference with one major surprise and a lot of demos of games that we expected to be present but looked amazing. First Dead Space 3 was shown off and honestly the demo looks amazing but fans of the series may be disappointed, it looks like Visceral Games is taking the franchise in a mush more Gears of War direction.
The demo showed only co-op action oriented gameplay and the last boss battle is very reminiscent of fights in the Gears of War franchise. That is not to say the game won’t be scary but most fans of the Dead Space games love the isolation feeling the game gives you; and you may not get that same feeling the first two games gave you. WWE Superstar Brock Lesnar was spotted in the crowd at Saturday’s Ufc 146 PPV and was shown on camera before the Frank Mir vs Junior do Santos main event. Check out some of this week's major releases after the break.
In the coming days we plan to provide pretty comprehensive coverage and impressions of Sony's new handheld launch which has, at least based on first glance, a pretty strong lineup of first and third party titles out of the gate. Mixed Martial Arts, in its current inception, is a sport. When it began 20 years ago, it wasn’t. Not because it was more violent, which it was, but because it wasn’t conceived or presented as a sport. It was designed, in equal parts, as an earnest attempt to pit one martial arts style against another and as a violent spectacle. The Ufc was started, essentially, as a live-action martial arts infomercial by the Gracie family, the pioneers of Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, who were anxious to demonstrate their vastly superior style against all comers, as they had been doing in Brazil for half a century. Matches generally weren’t the brutal blood-sport people might expect. More often than not, they were simply ugly fights between frequently unskilled competitors.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has come a long way from staging bare-knuckle fights between sumo wrestlers and karate experts on Indian reservations. Over the past few years, the organization — and the sport of mixed martial arts in general — has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon that regularly draws millions of pay-per-view buys and sells out arenas across the country. They have enjoyed unprecedented success and have broken a handful of stars (including Chuck Liddell, Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture). It will probably never be as mainstream as the owners and supporters believe it will be, but it has definitely replaced boxing (and professional wrestling) as the spectator fight sport of choice.

Where to even begin when writing an update on this Charlie Sheen insanity explosion that keeps raining down upon us? Let’s start with the craziest things first, shall we? Earlier we reported that Sheen, in one of his rants against Two And A Half Men creator Chuck Lorre said that he would be thrilled to fight Lorre in an octagon. Well, lucky for Sheen, Ultimate Fighting Championship boss Dana White wants to make that happen and has offered Charlie use of his octagon if he and Lorre want to throw down. Thanks for enabling Sheen’s insane, violent fantasy, Dana White! Sheen also fought back against the accusation that he was Anti-Semitic when he referred to Lorre as “Chaim Levine” in his rant. Sheen clarified to TMZ, saying “I was referring to Chuck by his real name, because I wanted to address the man, not the bulls— TV persona.

In a move that may break television’s sleeper hold on sports events, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will exclusively live-stream an anticipated fight on Facebook, available to anyone who “likes” their fan page. This is the first time a major sporting event has offered exclusive content through the social networking king, and, if successful, could make Facebook center stage for the Super Bowls and World Cups of the future.
Experimenting with new web integration is a natural fit for the Ufc, a business built on the strapping backs of its early, Internet-savvy fans. When CEO Dana White first took over the beleaguered brand, “none of the traditional media ever covered the Ufc,” White tells Fast Company. “One of the things that helped keep us alive was the Internet. Actor Matt Damon is a Boston guy (he grew up in Cambridge, attended Harvard and had his breakout role on the Beantown-centric movie "Good Will Hunting"), which means that he loves Boston sports teams (when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2007, he narrated a commemorative DVD about the season — something that friend Ben Affleck did when the team took home the championship in 2004). That's what drew him to the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 30), as his beloved hometown Celtics took on the Lakers in a rematch of last year's NBA Finals.
