When attending a UK film festival, you inevitably run into films that display some very tired clichés about the British Working Class. As the latest word from director Janis Pugh, Chuck Chuck Baby deserves to put them all to shame as a film scripted entirely from tired tropes and ideas. As though she asked ChatGPT to write a queer romance after feeding it ten years’ worth of The Sun.
So, we have a film that bizarrely tries to mix musical theatre and social realism, telling the story of Helen (Louise Brealey) an utterly downtrodden factory worker, relegated to the status of handmaiden by her gammon-faced ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones). Lodging in Gary’s spare room to care for his ailing mother Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), Helen’s been rendered all but invisible by the spectre of his new baby with a younger woman. Which is great for thematic resonance but terrible for building a compelling protagonist.

Helen (Louise Brealey) wakes in a bright, all-pink room, but the reality of her life is nothing like the whimsical room she's awoken in. She lives with her ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones) and his girlfriend Amy (Emily Fairn in a hilarious performance evoking "Little Britain"). She's not moved out as she has a strong connection to Gary's mother Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), who she cares for when not working night shifts at the local chicken plant. Leaving is all too tempting -- in the opening scene, she takes a suitcase out from under her bed but doesn't go through with packing. Her friends at the plant, Lynn (Emily Aston), Clare (Cat Simmons), and Paula (Beverly Rudd) try and get her to open up, but she seems resigned to the predictable monotony of her life in a small Welsh town.
That all changes when Joanne (Annabel Scholey) re-appears in their quiet town after years away.

The importance of laughter during times of loss is often undervalued. With her feature directorial debut, Janis Pugh showcases the significance of friendship and humor when grief strikes. A musical rom-com drama, “Chuck Chuck Baby” underscores the power of female companionship through the ups and downs of life.
Premiering as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s LGBTQ Stories section and also headed to Toronto Film Festival, “Chuck Chuck Baby” follows the life of Helen (Louise Brealey), a chicken factory worker in a small industrial town in northern Wales, whose life is mired in quotidian details, packaging chickens and caring for her ailing mother-figure Gwen. Helen’s life is turned upside down, however, with the unexpected arrival of her former high school love Joanne (Annabel Scholey), who inspires a renewed appreciation in Helen of her hometown, her life and herself. Yet, the couple’s reunion is quickly muddled. The...

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who: Flux ‘The Halloween Apocalypse’
“Nothing’s as it should be, Yaz. Too much out of the ordinary tonight.”
Between The Flux, the dog, the new Companion, the Sontarans, the Swarm, his sister, the Outpost, the Doctor’s hunt for information about the Division, and the Tardis malfunctions, ‘The Halloween Apocalypse’ barely paused for breath. One sequence though, slowed things down and created a much-needed moment of hushed intrigue amid all the noise and rushing about.
Outside Anfield Stadium on the trail of Karvanista, Yaz is busily telling the Doctor off for refusing to confide her secrets, when a woman runs up to the Tardis. She knows the Doctor, but the Doctor doesn’t yet know her. “I didn’t expect to see you here, not tonight,” says the woman, astonished to happen upon the Tardis in this way. Yaz asks if they’ve met...

Epix is signed up to British fantasy drama Britannia. The MGM-owned cable network is coming on board as a co-production partner for season three of the Sky series.
This comes after Deadline revealed earlier this year that British pay-tv broadcaster Sky had renewed the show for a third season but Amazon, which was involved in the first season, would no longer be involved.
Epix will also launch the first season of the show on August 2, followed by the second season on October 4 and will be the exclusive home for season three.
Production on season three of the big-budget historical drama, which was written by playwright Jez Butterworth, was shutdown in March as a result of Covid-19.

“Have you ever done anything like this before?” public health director Tracy Daszkiewicz is asked in episode one of The Salisbury Poisonings. “I’ll tell you when I know what it is we’re doing,” she answers. That unassuming, honest wit and humility becomes characteristic of her approach across this extraordinary drama.
2020 may feel as if it has the monopoly on the word ‘unprecedented’, but in March 2018, Daszkiewicz and her colleagues faced a singular crisis: an international assassination attempt using a lethal, invisible and almost impossible-to-detect substance, a teaspoonful of which could kill tens of thousands of people. And all this in the picture postcard city of Salisbury, a place of river walks and lardy cake, not the expected backdrop to a global spy conspiracy.
At the time of the attack on Sergei and Yulia Skripal, the vital role Daszkiewicz played in protecting the people of Salisbury went undersung. Press focus at the time was,...

“It’s not an easy watch,” says Annabel Scholey of her latest role in BBC One’s The Salisbury Poisonings. “It’s harrowing but it’s an important story to tell.” The three-part drama airing on consecutive nights from Sunday the 14th of June depicts the aftermath of the 2018 assassination attempt on Russians Sergei and Yulia Skripal in the English city of Salisbury.
“You’d expect spies and the political side of things,” says Scholey, “but this is a different angle.” The drama focuses entirely on the local response to the Novichok poisonings led by public health director Tracy Daszkiewicz (Anne-Marie Duff), and on inadvertent victims Dawn Sturgess (MyAnna Buring) and DS Nick Bailey (Rafe Spall).
Scholey plays Sarah Bailey, wife to the police officer who became contaminated with the nerve agent during a search of the Skripals’ home. Despite the event’s dramatic international context, the efforts made to...

Anne-Marie Duff and Rafe Spall will star in “Salisbury,” the fact-based BBC drama about the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the southwestern English city.
Duff (“Shameless”) and Spall (“The War of the Worlds”) will star alongside Mark Addy (“Game of Thrones”), Annabel Scholey (“Britannia”), Johnny Harris (“Jawbone”) and MyAnna Buring (“Ripper Street”).
The alleged assassination attempt on the Skripals, using the Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok, caused an international uproar. Britain accused Russia of being behind the attack, which the Skripals survived, but the Kremlin denied involvement. The incident led to the pullout of diplomats from Russia by several Western countries in solidarity with Britain.
The three-part TV drama will focus on the impact the incident had on the local community and recount the story of how ordinary people and public services reacted to the crisis on their doorstep.
