It won't surprise you to learn that the director behind darkly comedic action films like "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "The Nice Guys" is a big fan of John Maxim's bestselling thriller series about "retired" assassin Paul Bannerman. In fact, the filmmaker in question, Shane Black, even tweeted about his love for the series back in 2021, snapping a photo of all five novels spread out on a table and writing, "The year is 1990 and thriller writer John R. Maxim is at the top of his game. Before Lee Child ... before Vince Flynn ... there was Maxim. The guy simply brings it. Everything I crave. A masterful writer." Perhaps this was our first hint at a series to come ... or just Shane Black manifesting a potential project in the hopes of sparking some interest. Either way, it all worked out in the end: AMC has acquired the rights to the spy...

After hitting shelves last week amid widespread critical acclaim, sales for Hank Green’s debut novel, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, appear to be following suit.
The novel, about a bisexual art school student who inadvertently makes first contact with aliens, has debuted at the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list in the 'Hardcover Fiction' cartegory . This marks the novel’s first week on the charts, which serves as a de facto measure of success within the publishing industry. In the category combining hardcover and ebook sales, however, Thing debuted in the No. 2 position behind Vince Flynn: Red War, an adventure novel about a plot by the Russian Prime minister to invade the Baltics.
Green was uncharacteristically speechless in response to the honor, simply tweeting:

Sanaa Lathan was pleasantly surprised that elements of her Broadway experience came into play when she auditioned for American Assassin, the spy thriller based on Vince Flynn’s book series.

There was some hope that Jennifer Lawrence's new movie, Mother!, would do as well at the box office as many recent hit horror movies. Those hopes were quickly dashed when reactions from audiences in the movie's opening weekend indicated that viewers thought the film was one of the worst ever.

Darren Aronofsky's mother! stalled in its domestic box-office debut, grossing an estimated $7.5 million from 2,368 theaters after receiving a rare F CinemaScore and facing competition from the blockbuster It.

MaryAnn’s quick take… It’s tormented hotheads all around with a hero and villain who are almost indistinguishable and same-old spy stuff racing to a seen-it, been-there ticking-clock finale. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good action movie

Lordy, save us from young hothead dudes who disobey every order yet save the day, leaving their older, wiser, and more experienced superiors in awe. Let’s not encourage this. Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien: Deepwater Horizon, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) — why not just call him Lank Squarejaw? — is “the best I’ve ever seen” whose test scores are “off the charts” and “through the roof.” He’s got “talent and balls”! Chicago – There was another mass shooting (eight dead) in Texas this week, but it was underreported because it didn’t involve “undesirables” and just seemed like another week in America. This blithe attitude towards guns, gunplay and violence continues in the movies, this week with the overindulgent release “American Assassin.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Based on the popular best seller by Vince Flynn, “American Assassin” is a boilerplate America-Saves-the-World story, made more palatable as a pretty decent action film and the presence of Michael Keaton (as the tough-but-benign special ops trainer). It was directed by Michael Cuesta, a veteran of TV’s “Homeland,” but adapted by four writers, a sign of story killing. It is naive in its geopolitics, preferring to filter it through a bent-on-revenge ex-cia American than to make a statement about enemies. But there is still enough “undesirables” to fill the coffins. As the body count increases, it’s a...

Stephen King's It dominated the box office last weekend, breaking multiple records with its phenomenal ticket sales. This week, however, it faces some gritty, scary competition in Jennifer Lawrence's Mother! and Dylan O'Brien's American Assassin. Can the scary clown from Maine scare up another winning weekend?
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
The film adaptation of Stephen King's novel is expected to win the weekend with $50 million-plus after scaring up a record-shattering $123.4 million debut last weekend. The horror film, from Warner Bros. and New Line, has become a water-cooler sensation, amassing nearly $145 million in its first six days.
It, which cost $35 million to make, is well on its way to earning north of $300 million domestically and becoming one of the top-grossing horror films of all time, even when adjusting for inflation.

Stars: Dylan O’Brien, Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch, Sanaa Lathan | Written by Stephen Schiff, Michael Finch, Edward Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz | Directed by Michael Cuesta
Based on the novel by the late Vince Flynn, and vainly hoping to bridge the gap between the spy thriller and the cold assassin sub-genres, Michael Cuesta’s film has none of the style, substance or fun of its more illustrious peers. It’s closer in quality to a modern-day Steven Seagal effort movie than a Bourne, a Bond or a Hunt.
After a strong opening, reminiscent of No Escape’s shattering holiday resort assault, Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) is left with no living parents and a dead fiancée. Angry as hell, he throws his physical energy into mixed martial arts and gun ranges, and his mental energy into hunting down the terrorist cell responsible for the murder of his muse. Mitch is being watched by the CIA.

In “American Assassin,” the violence is surprising and brutal. However, its impact is stymied by a predictable script and action sequences that feel like a watered-down version of “John Wick.” And while Dylan O’Brien is a compelling and charming lead, and Michael Keaton unleashes a welcome degree of cantankerousness, this is one mission that should have been aborted.
Still, “American Assassin” kicks off with a bang that sets the tone for several more. While on vacation on the beach in Spain, Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) proposes to his girlfriend, Katrina (Charlotte Vega), recording the tender event on his smart phone, unaware of the bloodshed that’s about to break out around them. Viewers, however, will be one step ahead of them — thanks in part to the cheesy setup, and to the film’s telling tagline: “Assassins aren’t born, they’re made.”

“American Assassin” aims to be a political thriller with a contemporary mindset, but it feels like it was made for audiences from the 1990s that didn’t get enough Tom Clancy movies. Dylan O’Brien, tackling not only his first proper “adult” role but also his first project since suffering a debilitating accident on the set of the third “Maze Runner” film, plays the protagonist of Vince Flynn’s bestselling book series with intensity and verve. But the meta-narrative of his rehabilitation provides a more compelling journey than the movie is interested in exploring with its lead character. Nevertheless a suitably exciting action film.

Dylan O'Brien headlines the screen debut of Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp. Here's our review of American Assassin...
Things start well here. Opening on the sands of a luxurious beach resort, we are quickly introduced to a young couple, a duo clearly in love. He’s Mitch Rapp, the hero of our story, played by Dylan O’Brien. She’s Katrina (Charlotte Vega), his soon to be fiancé. But one excellently-staged action sequence later, and said resort has been shredded by a terrorist attack, with bodies on the sands and Katrina in the waves. It’s an abrupt, gripping and brutal start to a thriller that’s resolutely determined to wear its 18-certificate on its sleeves.
Unfortunately, it’s as good as the film ever gets.
What follows is a spluttering attempt to get another Jack Ryan-style franchise going, that gets bogged down in pretty tepid and muddled storytelling. The...

With 16 books and counting, American Assassin hopes to turn Mitch Rapp into a new Hollywood action hero. Dylan O’Brien plays the character created by author Vince Flynn. Rapp turns to Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) for training after a terrorist attack claims the life of his fiance. Certainly, he did not want to show that enhanced interrogation and other violent methods spelled victory for the heroes. “I was a little nervous about how it leaned, frankly,” Keaton said at a press conference...read more...

In case you hadn’t seen enough of Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming check out the brand new trailer for American Assassin in which he may come to regret training Dylan O’Brien just a bit too well.

The brand new trailer, whilst covering footage we have seen before, gives us a new insight of Mitch’s deadly mission to find and take out the mysterious operative that poses a major threat of causing another World War. From slick training manoeuvres from the depths of the forest to the hot, dusty exotic streets of the Middle East, Mitch disobeys orders to follow his gut that something isn’t quite right and takes matters into his own hands. We smell something a little fishy here.

"You want a killer? Here he is." Lionsgate UK has released another new full-length trailer for the action thriller titled American Assassin, adapted from Vince Flynn's novel of the same name. We've seen two full trailers for this already, but this new one packs in even more action and shows us a few extra scenes we haven't seen yet. The film is about Mitch Rapp, an "ordinary every day all-American athlete and scholar" recruited by the CIA, becoming one of the best assassins they've ever seen, but he gets into trouble on an assignment in Beirut. The Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien plays Mitch, and the cast includes Michael Keaton, Taylor Kitsch, Sanaa Lathan, Scott Adkins, David Suchet, as well as Shiva Negar. They're really trying to sell this hard, and it looks okay. I'm mostly curious about the big wave - must be detonation? Here's the third...

Dylan O’Brien is getting re-Bourne. “The Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star is 25 and it’s time to take on some more adult roles, so he’s doing a hard pivot into “American Assassin,” which sees O’Brien going into ruthless action mode.

"...a 'CIA black ops' recruit, 'Mitch Rapp' (O'Brien), is devastated by the loss of his girlfriend to a terrorist attack. CIA Deputy Director 'Irene Kennedy' (Lathan) assigns 'Cold War' veteran 'Stan Hurley' (Keaton) to train a grief-stricken but highly motivated Rapp how to thwart terrorist operations and hunt the perpetrators.
"Together they investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on military and civilian targets and discover a pattern in the violence that leads them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Kitsch) intent on starting war in the Middle East..."

This American Assassin action thriller actually looks like it could be a great film that has potential to be a solid new franchise. We've got two new trailers for you to watch today for the movie, one of which is a red-band trailer. I really like what I'm seeing in these trailers and it doesn't hurt that the movie features a talented cast of actors.
American Assassin follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent...

Best-in-class counterterrorism agent Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) reports for duty in the gripping first red band trailer for American Assassin, Michael Cuesta’s (Kill the Messenger) sweeping franchise-starter that takes the espionage elements of Homeland and sprinkles a little of 24‘s signature action over the top for good measure.
The end result is a breathless teaser for CBS and Lionsgate’s American Assassin, which sees O’Brien’s hardened protagonist embark on a quest for a revenge after his significant other is murdered in cold blood while holidaying on some picturesque beach resort. It’s a terrorist act ripped straight from the headlines, and we’re intrigued to see how audiences react to Michael Cuesta’s unflinching adaptation in light of recent events.

The journey of Vince Flynn‘s novel “American Assassin” to the big screen has been an interesting one. Over the years, directors like Antoine Fuqua, Ed Zwick, and Jeffrey Nachmanoff were linked to the adaptation, while Chris Hemsworth and Bruce Willis were also mentioned for roles. But it took rising star Dylan O’Brien (“The Maze Runner“) and director Michael Cuesta (“Kill The Messenger“) to get the movie in front of cameras.

CBS and Lionsgate are sure starting to look like they’ve got the ingredients to launch an action hero franchise. American Assassin, built on a deep well of bestselling novels by the late Vince Flynn, has an appealing young protagonist in Dylan O’Brien, a strong veteran actor in Michael Keaton, and all the inherent action director Michael Cuesta could put on the screen in a revenge tale that could be the start of a Jack Ryan-like journey for O’Brien’s Mitch Rapp…...

Mitch Rapp is about to arrive on the big screen, as Lionsgate and CBS Films unveiled the red band trailer for “American Assassin” on Tuesday. Based on the best-selling novel by Vince Flynn, the film stars Dylan O’Brien as Mitch Rapp, a CIA black ops recruit out for revenge. Impressed by his raw skills, CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) puts him under the wing of grizzled veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton), and after a round of grueling training, sends them both into the field to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets.

The Mitch Rapp books are coming to the big screen - and American Assassin has landed an 18-rating in the UK.
Arriving in cinemas this autumn is American Assassin, the first big screen adaptation of the Mitch Rapp line of thrillers, written by the late Vince Flynn. The movie has cast Dylan O’Brien in the role of Rapp, and the cast for this one also includes Scott Adkins, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan and David Suchet. Michael Cuesta is directing.
It looks as if the film won't be pulling any punches, either. In a rare move, a big movie has earned an 18 certificate from the BBFC, in this case for its "strong sadistic and bloody violence". The BBFC also confirms that the final cut of the film is 112 minutes long.
Here's the latest international trailer for the film, that was released last month.

The life of author Vince Flynn is as inspirational and compelling as the characters in his popular espionage novels. He battled dyslexia as a child, was disqualified from Marine Corps Aviation school (complications from multiple concussions), and struggled to establish a business career. Flynn began writing spy stories in his free time, completing his first novel over several years, but was unable to secure a book deal. He decided to self-publish and became an overnight success... it would be cliché if it weren't also true.
I mention all of this because the upcoming movie, American Assassin -- based on his series of "Mitch Rapp" counter-terrorism novels -- is not your typical revenge thriller. This film has been in the works for nearly a decade, with everyone from Antoine Fuqua to Bruce Willis to Chris Hemsworth attached to it at various stages of its long development cycle.

As one of the few films affected by Dylan O’Brien’s crippling injury – the young up-and-comer was involved in a serious on-set accident while filming Ya sequel Maze Runner: The Death Cure – it’s no secret that American Assassin has spent a little more time in the oven than one would expect.
But with a September 15th launch date between its crosshairs, Michael Cuesta’s (Kill the Messenger) geopolitical thriller is prepped and ready to infiltrate theaters across the planet, and today brings forth the thrilling first trailer to stoke excitement.
