BBC News is going streaming.
The cable news channel extension of the storied British public broadcaster will begin streaming — for free — on a handful of connected TV and Fast (free ad-supported streaming) platforms, beginning today.
BBC News will be available on Samsung TV Plus, Xumo, Sling TV, Plex, Vizio and Pluto TV, with other distribution partners to follow. BBC News will also continue to be carried through traditional pay-tv providers like Charter, Comcast and DirecTV.
Executives at every cable news channel have been evaluating how to adapt to a streaming-first world. At CNN (the other global news brand), Warner Bros. Discovery have opted to put some live programming on the Max streaming service, combining some CNN International programming with CNN U.S. fare. Fox News and MSNBC sends their primetime shows to Fox Nation and Peacock the day after they air.

The Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten announced her forthcoming memoir’s release date in perhaps the most her way possible. No, not with a giant cocktail how-to or a roast chicken. Rather, something akin to her relaxed take on cooking and entertaining. The 76-year-old author and longtime cooking show host simply updated her social media bio with the date.
Garten’s memoir is set to debut in October 2024
Mark the calendar, Barefoot Contessa fans. Garten, who has been a frequent face on Food Network since 2002, finally unveiled when her memoir is hitting shelves.
In early February 2024, Garten quietly updated her Instagram bio to include her memoir’s release date, writing: “Memoir coming out October 1st 2024.”
So, instead of a Barefoot Contessa cookbook hitting shelves in the fall as has been known to happen since the late ‘90s, Garten has a different type of book on offer. Through her memoir, she’s...

In the midst of a great debate about the future of the U.S. news business, the British are coming.
Katty Kay, the veteran BBC newscaster, is set to launch a new deep-dive interview program that will take her away — not permanently — from her usual role covering U.S. politics in favor of long-form conversations with interesting figures. In the first nine-episode season of “Influential with Katty Kay,” the journalist will interview actor Wendell Pierce, dancer Misty Copeland and author Ken Follett, among others, all in a longform format that will put emphasis not only on what makes them famous but also some of their interests.
“You interview people in one way in news or politics. You are trying to catch them maybe saying something they don’t necesssarirly want to say or in an unguarded way. There’s a combative nature, which can be exhilarating, but it’s definitely combative,...

Ozy Media founder Carlos Watson was arrested and charged with fraud by federal investigators, according to multiple news reports.
Prosecutors said in a court document that Watson had “engaged in a scheme to defraud Ozy’s potential investors, potential acquirers, lenders and potential lenders” by inflating the site’s audience numbers and financials in a scandal that began to unfold last fall. Ozy shut down in October of 2021 after the New York Times reported that someone at the company had apparently impersonated a YouTube executive during a conference call with Goldman Sachs, which was considering an investment. The person – later named as Samir Rao, Ozy’s chief operating officer — praised the performance of Ozy’s videos on the giant platform and the two companies’ good working relationship.
Reports said Watson’s arrest followed Rao’s pleading guilty earlier this week in Brooklyn federal court to fraud and identity theft charges.

Mika Brzezinski had been about as close to Jewel, the folk singer known for her hit “Who Will Save Your Soul” as Coca-Cola is to mayonnaise. But the two recently struck a connection that will have the musician appearing on one of the most distinctive broadcasts of Brzezinski’s long-running MSNBC program, “Morning Joe.”
On Wednesday, November 9, the day after the 2022 midterm elections, Kilcher will appear with Brzezinski, Joe Scarborough and Willie Geist while they spend their program’s four hours analyzing the results and what they could mean for both Republicans and Democrats. Mike Barnicle and Jen Psaki will also appear, along with analysts ranging from Katty Kay to Jon Meacham. But Kilcher represents something a little different. Yes. she has expressed political views in the past, but she’s not the sort of politics aficionado who regularly visits the program.

Chris Wallace, the CNN Anchor and host of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? on HBO Max, had a startling confession during his segment on Friday’s Real Time with Bill Maher.
During a conversation between Maher and Wallace lamenting today’s conservative/liberal polarization of the news, Wallace traced the problem back to the golden days of three major channels and the world tuning in at 6:30 Pm to hear about the world from Walter Cronkite or Huntley-Brinkley.
Those programs drew audiences of as much as 29 million, but they weren’t profit centers. But the men who ran the networks at the time saw news as a public service, and if it didn’t lose an enormous amount of money, they were fine with that.
But when Chris Wallace’s father, Mike Wallace, and his 60 Minutes team started in 1968, things shifted. That show began making money, “and suddenly, the executives in television said,...

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, Sep. 19, is shaping up to be a global spectacle. World leaders, including President Biden, will be in attendance, and the world’s media will be there, too.
The queen’s funeral will be the first time such an event has been broadcast on television. In 1952, when Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne, the funeral procession of King George VI was televised in the U.K., but the funeral itself remained private. Not so this time.
While the BBC will be the official broadcaster of the proceedings, every U.S. TV news organization will be in attendance, flying in many of their top anchors and blowing up their typical programming lineups to carry it live.
Here’s what’s planned from the U.S. TV news networks.

“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski didn’t think Will Smith needed to resort to storming to the Oscars stage and smacking Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
The MSNBC show’s morning team were discussing Sunday night’s incident at the Oscars when Brzezinski pointed out Pinkett Smith’s reputation for strength and openness.
“Two things come to my mind: No. 1, Jada Pinkett Smith is one of the most empowered, helpful to women, women that I’ve ever, you know, seen out there in front,” Brzezinski said. “She is strong; she’s beautiful; she shares a lot of vulnerable stories during her ‘Red Table Talks.’ She shares with her family; she goes there on issues. CAA has signed Katty Kay, the popular author and BBC correspondent and author, and will serve as her representative for many of her ventures.
The announcement comes just days after Kay rejoined the BBC after leaving last May to join Ozy Media, an ill-fated venture alleged in November to have committed securities fraud. Kay left BBC in a bid to broaden her horizons in digital and audio media, but left Ozy soon after it came under scrutiny. “I was looking forward to working with the talented young reporters but I did not expect this!” she wrote at the time in a statement released on Twitter.
Her return to BBC is a homecoming of sorts, and she is expected to host documentaries from different points around the globe, create podcasts, write a weekly column and report news during moments of import. She has been named a U.S. special correspondent for BBC Studios.

In the first of what may well become a string of lawsuits against embattled Ozy Media, a fund manager that invested in the site accused it of fraud and asked for compensatory and punitive damages in a jury trial.
LifeLine Legacy Holdings of Beverly Hills, Calif., which put more than $2 million into the company co-founded and led by Carlos Watson, claimed in a lawsuit that Ozy had “engaged in fraudulent, deceptive and illegal conduct” when the firm was considering early this year whether or not to invest.

Embattled Ozy Media continues to make headlines as founder-ceo Carlo Watson told the Today show the company is not in fact shutting down as it had previously announced in the wake of a fast unfolding financial scandal where he had been conspicuously absent.
Watson said he stayed quiet all last week as his company flamed out because he’d gotten “some very bad advice from crisis communications folks.” Now he’s speaking out, “engaging,” he said, including a pot shot at Sharon Osbourne, whom Watson has previously described as a friend and investor in Ozy Media. Osbourne denied both when asked by CNBC last week as the company imploded, and called Watson “insane.”
The two had a 2017 legal fight over Ozy Media’s Ozyfest festival’s alleged infringement on the Osbourne’s Ozzfest event name. She said Watson had offered them shares of his company to settle the lawsuit but that she declined.

The board of Ozy Media, the media and entertainment company accused of deceiving investors and advertisers, has had a change of heart and will not be shutting its doors, CEO Carlos Watson said Monday.
“We are going to open for business,” Watson said in an appearance on NBC News’ “Today” show. “This is our Lazarus moment, if you will.”
The about-face comes after New York-based Ozy announced Friday, Oct. 1, that it would wind down the business, following a series of damaging reports about the company falsifying audience metrics and the revelation that its COO impersonated a YouTube executive on a call with prospective investor Goldman Sachs. Ozy’s questionable practices were first reported by the New York Times on Sept. 26, leading to an avalanche of other disclosures including allegations of a toxic workplace culture.

Embattled digital firm Ozy Media says it is shutting down, just days after a New York Times column exposed a range of dubious and even potentially criminal behavior by its executives.
Since the column by Ben Smith was published online last Sunday, a drip-drip series of events has ensued, with board chairman Marc Lasry and marquee hire Katty Kay both stepping down. Current and former employees came out of the woodwork to paint the company as a “Potemkin village,” in the memorable phrase of former staffer Eugene Robinson.

Former BBC News anchor and correspondent Katty Kay, who had just joined Ozy Media in late June, has announced her exit following the recent controversy swirling around revelations of the digital company’s practices.
“Yesterday morning I handed in my resignation to Ozy Media,” Kay wrote on Twitter. “I was looking forward to working with the talented young reporters but I did not expect this!”
Kay’s exit comes after a New York Times column, by Ben Smith, who revealed that Ozy Media chief operating officer Samir Rao impersonated a YouTube executive on a call with potential Goldman Sachs investors. Rao has now taken a leave of absence from the company, and his bio has been removed from Ozy’s website.

“So America is no longer the world’s policeman, we’re the world’s student loan officer,” said Bill Maher tonight of Joe Biden’s pledge to “hunt you down and make you pay” the perpetrators of yesterday’s horrific attack outside Kabul Airport.
“I’ll tell you, America not so good at wining wars, but the getting the fuck out part, we’re getting a lot of practice at that,” he said beforehand, to one of many big laughs before his studio audience.
“Of course there was this suicide bombing which makes it a giant tragedy now,” the Real Time with Bill Maher host stated of the evacuation of over 100,000 people from the South Asian nation in the last week. “Am I the only one who thinks we did this completely ass-backwards? We pulled the troops out, and then tried to evacuate the civilians? I feel that was a little backwards.

The British government has refused to condemn Donald Trump after he falsely claimed victory in the U.S. election and branded legitimate voting “a fraud” that he will fight in the Supreme Court.
Touring television studios shortly after Trump had finished his address, UK foreign secretary Dominic Raab would not be drawn on the former The Apprentice star’s remarks at the White House.
Trump said “as far as I am concerned we have already won” to a crowd of supporters. “We want all the voting to stop,” Trump added. “This is a fraud on the American public.”
At the time Trump claimed victory, he was both behind in the electoral college and popular vote with a number of states yet to declare results and millions of votes yet to be counted.

As Election Day begins to unfold across the United States, TV news channels in Europe and media around the world are girding for a long night ahead. The final heat between incumbent Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden might or might not be decided when Europe wakes up on Wednesday — Germany’s Der Spiegel is currently leading with the headline “Why There Could Be No Winner On Election Evening” — but teams are at the ready, and some programmers have gotten creative on non-news fare.
Sporadic coverage began on international cable channels throughout the day today, though many European outlets were also focused on Monday night’s terrorist shooting spree that left four dead in Vienna. Coronavirus, a main topic of the U.S. presidential election, remains a key talking point, particularly in France where a 9 p.m. curfew, to go along with the ongoing lockdown, has been evoked for Paris.

In case you hadn’t heard, Morning Joe hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough tied the knot on November 24 — in front of the Constitution at the National Archives, no less. (They really love America.) The co-hosts’ nuptials were officiated by Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.). And Saturday Night Live couldn’t resist putting their own spin on this love story, with Alex Moffat as Scarborough and Kate McKinnon as Mika.

The “Morning Joe” panel took a moment Tuesday to play the role of marriage counselor, delving into the personal toll the Stormy Daniels story must be having on the Trump marriage. Donald Trump said Friday that the same forces that drove Great Britain to pull out of the European Union will help him win the presidency in November - and he's not the only one who thinks so. Perhaps a little frazzled during a whirlwind promotional tour, Russell Brand took his interview into his own hands on "Morning Joe" on Monday (June 17).
As co-host Mika Brzezinksi and panelists Katty Kay and Brian Shactman awkwardly spoke about the British comedian, he became visibly agitated.
Finally, the 38-year-old star blurted out, "Is this what you all do for a living? These people are, I'm sure, typically very, very good at their job. You're conveying news to the people of America? People of America, we're gonna to be Ok. Everything's alright. These are your trusted anchors."
Later, he pokes fun at the co-host as she held her water bottle, calling her a "shaft grasper" and saying, "You need to lose that ring, Mika, 'cause it don't mean nothing to ya." Check out the entire awkward segment in the video below.

Don't mess with Russell Brand. The 38-year-old funnyman appeared on Morning Joe Monday morning where he was invited to chat about his upcoming world comedy tour, Messiah Complex. The chat started off with talk ranging from the tour's inspirations, which include world figures such as Che Guevara and Mahatma Gandhi, as well as Brand's boots. Which, was all fine, until panelist Brian Shactman followed up a "serious" question by saying he couldn't understand Brand's accent when he heard him on the radio. This led into more talk with cohost Mika Brzezinski and fellow panelists Katty Kay on the topic while referring to him in third person. Safe to say Brand, who was sitting right there,...

Despite the gruff, inappropriate side of him that he frequently shows the public, Russell Brand is one of the most intelligent comedians around. He took to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" talk show to discuss his new comedy tour "Messiah Complex," but apparently those who were there to speak to him didn't get the memo that Brand is a celebrity to take seriously.
Co-host Mika Brzezinski got the interview off on the wrong foot by making a point of how she has no idea who Brand is. During the rest of the eight minute segment, she and panelists Katty Kay and Brian Shactman proceed to mock Brand's accent, talk about him like he wasn't in the room and call him names like "Willy." Finally Brand seemingly has enough, reprimands the trio for their manners and then showcases how he believes professional news anchors should act.
