For the first time, Drake Bell is opening up about being sexually assaulted by Nickelodeon dialogue and acting coach Brian Peck.
“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” the upcoming ID documentary airing March 17 and 18, dives into both the alleged emotional abuse by Nick creator Dan Schneider and the physical abuse by Brian Peck.
In 2003, Peck, 43 at the time, was arrested on 11 charges — including sodomy, lewd act upon a child 14 or 15 by a person 10 years older, and oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance — but the minor was not named until now.
“My name is Drake Bell and I came here today to tell my story,” Bell says during the documentary’s third episode, before detailing his close relationship with Peck, whom he met at the beginning of Season 2 of “The Amanda Show.”

The Bell Keeper opens on a reasonably strong note for what appears to be an indie slasher. An axe-wielding figure, we’ll later find out his name is Hank, dispatches a pair of victims and adds their driver’s licenses to the collection on his cabin wall. The only as to why, “You shouldn’t have rung the bell”.
This happens at Lake Bell which, as the newspaper headlines under the credits tell us, has a long and evil reputation that includes lots of brutal deaths and mysterious disappearances. So of course filmmakers Gabriel, and Matthew want to make a documentary about it.

Eva Maria Daniels, producer of independent features “Reality,” “What Maisie Knew” and “Joe Bell,” died on June 30 in London, after battling cancer. She was 43.
Throughout her career, Daniels maintained longstanding partnerships with producer Riva Marker and A24, worked as a producer for The Mill and Company 3 and served as a consultant for the Icelandic Film Fund.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” wrote director Börkur Sigthorsson on Facebook.
Most recently, Daniels executive produced the Berlin Film Festival selection and Max feature, “Reality,” which stars Sydney Sweeney and was directed by Tina Satter.
“Eva was hyper intelligent and had a gift for seeking out and supporting artists.

The fairy tale version of the story behind “King Richard” goes like this: Jada Pinkett Smith was on the U.S. Dramatic Competition jury for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival when she saw director Reinaldo Marcus Green’s first feature, “Monsters and Men.” The tough but ultimately rousing look at police brutality and communal activism left her impressed enough to bring the movie to the attention of her husband, Aka Will Smith. The actor, in turn, was on the hunt for the right director to take on “King Richard,” the story of Venus and Serena Williams’ devoted father, with Smith’s Westbrook Inc. attached to produce. Green seemed like the perfect fit.
Cut to three years later, and bingo — “King Richard” launched with a bang at the Telluride Film Festival, where the Warner Bros. production became an instant Oscar contender, with Smith’s empathetic performance as a flawed but passionate patriarch hailed as his best yet.

With school holidays ending and only a smattering of new releases in the market, the national box office plunged last weekend to the lowest point since mid-August 2020.
According to Numero, total receipts for all films tallied just $2 million. Some $1.8 million of that came from the top 20 titles, a result that is down almost 48 per cent on the previous weekend.
The last time the figures were so low, cinemas were only just emerging from the first wave of lockdowns, ahead of the release of Tenet.
This weekend will hopefully see a pick-me-up, with all cinemas in Nsw finally able to open at 75 per cent capacity. This includes the Sydney market, which has been closed since late June. Cinemas in Melbourne, parts of regional Victoria and the Act remain closed.
Read our interviews with major and independent exhibitors about their reopening plans.
A further boost should come again when major releases start...

Exclusive: Blaine Maye (Joe Bell) will topline Tooth Shop Fiasco – A James Lassen Story, the first feature from writer-director David Harari.
Pic centers on James Lassen (May), who has a date with the dentist. And for this good-natured if somewhat clueless slacker/rocker misfit, it’s all downhill from there!
George M. Rush (Sorry To Bother You) is producing the film with Michael Tully (Ping Pong Summer).
Maye found his breakout role, opposite Mark Wahlberg, Connie Britton and Reed Miller, in Solstice Studios’ drama Joe Bell. The actor was also recently a series regular in Eli Roth’s Facebook Watch series, Stereoscope. He can currently be seen opposite Emile Hirsch in the indie feature Son, streaming on Shudder, and will next appear in The Mental State, an indie from director James Camali, starring Bryan Greenberg and Alyssa Sutherland.
Maye is represented by Gersh and Stagecoach Entertainment.

Exclusive: Solstice Studios is terminating most of its key executives, a move that was announced to staff Monday morning. Deadline hears that among those who are out are founding CEO Mark Gill, production president Lisa Ellzey, founding marketing chief Vincent Bruzzese, distribution head Shari Hardison and international sales topper Crystal Bourbeau. This follows a round of layoffs last December of about 20 people.
The company will continue with just 10 staffers left, and they will oversee the completion of Hypnotic, which is now in production with Robert Rodriguez directing and Ben Affleck and Alice Braga starring. Those staffers are expected to stay on through fall 2022. I’m told the company will be shuttered after that.
“Solstice is not closing,” a company spokesperson said this morning. “It is being streamlined and will focus entirely on getting ‘Hypnotic’ produced and released. To that end, there will still be 10 people working at the company going forward.

Will Smith hits a winner with King Richard. Playing the driven, eccentric and controversial father of budding tennis prodigies Venus and Serena Williams in the late 1980s and 1990s, the protean actor finds a new gear as he inhabits a complicated and gutsy man who trailblazes a path for two highly talented girls in their early teens in a sport where Black aspirants were virtually unheard of, especially in the female ranks. This engaging account of an unprecedented double-whammy success story for two sisters will play very well with all manner of audiences.
A generation or two ago, few sports were as lily-white as tennis, and the notion of girls from the rough hood of Compton rather than Beverly Hills producing tennis stars was unthinkable. And to say that the cranky, idiosyncratic Richard Williams provoked raised eyebrows and endless consternation in the tennis world would be an understatement. But, at the end of the day,...

However Disney ends up dividing the bounty from Marvel’s “Black Widow,” it is now adding to the haul with added revenue sources. After a month of exclusive Premium VOD availability through Disney+, all other platforms, like Roku and Amazon, are offering the year’s highest grossing film in theaters for the same $29.99, but without needing to subscribe to the streamer.
The vagaries of talent contracts, and how their payouts are related to reaching profit (a likely far-off point for the multi-hundred million dollar effort), remain unclear. But what is known is that along with its strong theatrical response, the money it is earning is increasing.
“Black Widow” is #1 on iTunes (usually quickest to respond to new releases) and currently #3 at Google Play. Both these rank by the number of transactions, not the revenue accrued. It is also #1 at Vudu, which charts by how much money was paid to view.

In January 2013, a gay 15-year-old named Jadin Bell, from La Grande, Oregon, hanged himself from a piece of playground equipment and, after being kept on life support for several weeks, died in early February that year. He was a sophomore in high school. He’d dreamed of becoming an artist, of going to New York City for college — of, at the very least, getting the hell out of La Grande. Like many queer teens before him and, it’s painful to say, many since his death, Jadin was subject to...

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain kept its spot in the North American top ten for week two in 954 theaters – up by 27 — with an $830,000 estimated gross for the three days, leading the specialty box office.
As per Focus Features, that was a total cume of over $3.7 million for the Morgan Neville documentary about the charismatic but troubled former chef turned world-traveler television host who tragically took his own life in 2018. The $870 location average for this, echoed by others in the space, is solid for specialty fare so far this year with the sector challenged by a slow reopening and limited product.
Roadrunner had a 58% drop week-on-week. “We have seen in the pandemic that second weekends take a steeper drop than what we would normally experience,” said Brad Thompson of Focus.
Roadrunner played multiplexes but its best grosses continued to be in art and specialty houses led by LA, with the most theaters, followed by New York and San Francisco. The Angelika in NYC maintained the top spot. Three locations in Brooklyn – the Alamo and the two Nighthawk’s in Williamsburg and Prospect Park — were also top ten locations. Grosses: Friday – $250k; Saturday – $320k; and Sunday – $260k.
Bourdain, who shot to stardom with his dishy bestseller Kitchen Confidential, is widely known and loved by viewers who followed him for years on Travel Channel and later on Parts Unknown on CNN. The film was marketed heavily and in theaters, which gave ticket buyers recipe cards of his favorite dishes. It helped boost a market that’s been struggling to recover but has had some notable entrants lately.
Neon’s Pig with an excellent Nicolas Cage as a reclusive truffle hunter searching for his stolen pig continued strong in its second weekend, earning $565k in 588 locations for a per theater average of $961 and a cume through Sunday of over $2 million. That’s Friday – $162,000; Saturday – $230,000; and Sunday – $173,000.
(Neon also opened Ailey in two locations to $16,014 The documentary by Jamily Wignot about Alvin Ailey the trailblazing pioneer who found salvation through dance is told through Ailey’s own words with archival footage and interviews.)
The widest specialty debut was Roadside Attractions Joe Bell that opened to an estimated $707,185 on 1,094 screens for a per theater average of $646. The film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and based on a true story, stars Mark Wahlberg as an Oregonian father who pays tribute to his gay teenage son Jadin, embarking on a self-reflective walk across America to speak his heart to heartland citizens about the real and terrifying costs of bullying.
Roadside’s Howard Cohen noted that the firm increased in gross from Friday to Saturday “indicating positive word of mouth for future play in theatres.” Friday – $245,640; Saturday – $279,725; and Sunday – $181,820.
Other notable debuts: Oscilloscope Labs’ CatVideoFest 2021 opened in 35 locations for a weekend gross of $35,500 and a per theater average of $1,014.
Integrity Releasing’s Secret Agent Dingledorf and His Trusty Dog Splat played on 30 runs earning $2,500 for a cume to date of $6,500
All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip Hop and Skateboarding (1987-1997) from Greenwich Entertainment played on 1 screen with a three-day projected gross of $9,500. Jeremy Elkin’s doc opened at the Village East (in NYC’s East Village) and expands to select locations nationwide in the next several weeks. It explores the scene that inspired the 1995 film Kids and launched the NYC skateboarding and lifestyle brand Supreme.

The opening credits of "Joe Bell" point out that the film is based on a true story, but it might be best to go into it not knowing too much about that story.
That's not because the film from director Reinaldo Marcus Green ("Monsters and Men") in any way betrays the real events, or even distorts them too much -- on the whole, the drama written by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry tries hard to do justice to Joe Bell, an Oregon man who in 2013 set out to walk across the United States to bring attention to bullying after his son, Jadin, was mercilessly mocked and bullied for being gay.
But "Joe Bell," which premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival under the title "Good Joe Bell" but received a new edit before its July 2021 release from Roadside Attractions, takes some twists and turns along the way -- and it...

The film is based on an infamous true story, as Joe Bell was a man who walked across the country, stopping along the way at various high schools and venues to talk about bullying. Bell took on this conviction because his sensitive and gay son Jadin (Reid Miller) was constantly harassed at his school … amazingly, this went down in 2013. The struggles of working class Joe Bell in accepting his son is the hidden struggles that a lot of families Still go through.

This time of year is often thought of as a perfect time for strengthening family bonds. And now this new Summer flick explores this, an “inspired by true events” tale of a father and son, who seem to have little in common aside from DNA. So, are they trying connect via a sport like baseball, or perhaps working on a house or on restoring an old car? No, they’re taking a trip across the USA…the long way…on foot. Of course, there’s more to this journey than leisurely taking in the site from ground level. No, it’s more of a mission to stand up to the forces of ignorance and intolerance, That’s the plan of this story’s weary patriarch, a simple small-town fella’ named Joe Bell.
As this story begins, we’re right alongside Joe (Mark Wahlberg) as he’s pulling a cart that holds his tent,...

"I still got a lot of road ahead of me." Roadside Attractions has unveiled an official trailer for Joe Bell, a heartfelt drama which first premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival. The latest from up-and-coming filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green. The true story of a small town, working class father who embarks on a solo walk across the entire U.S. to crusade against bullying after his son is tormented in high school for being gay. Newcomer Reid Miller stars as Jadin, with Connie Britton, Gary Sinise, Maxwell Jenkins, Morgan Lily, and Mark Wahlberg. It looks quite good, even though it's such a sad story, but has heart and is about acceptance and love above all. In his new role, Muntz will continue to work with Vertical partners Rich Goldberg and Peter Jarowey, to whom he reports, and will oversee day-to-day distribution of the company’s non-theatrical sales operations. He will also continue to support strategic development via sales partnerships, content curation and market expansion for all of Vertical’s distribution platforms.
“As Vertical has grown, so too has Nick grown with us. We’re so pleased to recognize his contributions to our successful expansions over the last couple of years, and are excited to have him take a lead role overseeing our sales and distribution efforts as we continue to make inroads into new revenue streams for our films, and in turn, the filmmakers,” the Vertical Partners said in a...

While most associate Mark Wahlberg with high-octane action movies or comedies with talking teddy bears, the actor can stretch his dramatic chops as well, and he'll be doing just that in the upcoming Joe Bell, a drama about a father who walks across America to honour his bullied gay son. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a script by Diana Ossana and Larry McMurty, Joe Bell…...

“Joe Bell,” the Mark Wahlberg drama that was first acquired by Solstice Studios for $20 million out of Toronto, has now changed hands to Roadside Attractions, which will release the film on July 23.
Solstice Studios has now exited the project, and the film will get a slower rollout beginning with 750 theaters. Vertical Entertainment has also come aboard to handle the film’s post-theatrical digital release.
Reinaldo Marcus Green directs “Joe Bell” from a script by “Brokeback Mountain” writers Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry. The film is a true story of an Oregon father who pays tribute to his gay teenage son Jadin, embarking on a self-reflective walk across America to speak his heart to heartland citizens about the real and terrifying costs of bullying.
Starring alongside Wahlberg in the film are newcomer Reid Miller, Connie Britton and Gary Sinise.
Producers on “Joe Bell,” originally titled “Good Joe Bell,” are Daniela Taplin Lundberg,...

Exclusive: Joe Bell, the drama that stars Mark Wahlberg as a father who walks across America to honor his bullied gay son, is doing some more traveling. The film has been acquired for theatrical release by Roadside Attractions, with Vertical Entertainment aboard for a post-theatrical digital release. It opens July 23.
Joe Bell made its world premiere at virtual Toronto 2020, at which time it was acquired by Solstice Studios in a $20 million worldwide rights deal. I’d heard that Solstice might exit, and it has. That company, which released its first film in the Russell Crowe-directed Unhinged, is constructed to do theatrical releases of 2,000 screens and up. The pandemic, and the film’s subject matter, seem better served with a slower rollout, and Joe Bell now will begin on about 750 screens and build upward from there. The deal was negotiated by Roadside’s Howard Cohen, Vertical’s Peter Jarowey and Endeavor Content.

Exclusive: The always busy Mark Wahlberg looks to have found his next feature film as Deadline is hearing the A-lister is set to star in the drama Stu, with Rosalind Ross making her directing debut and also penned the script.
Wahlberg will produce along with his producing partner and manager Stephen Levinson along with Jordan Foss. Miky Lee and Colleen Camp will exec produce.
Not much is known about the plot other then it is a faith-based film loosely based on a true story and is something very close to Wahlberg’s heart and something he had been developing for a number of years. As someone whose schedule is usually filled years out, when an opening occurred at the top of the year, Wahlberg saw this as the perfect opportunity to finally move forward with the film.
Another element that helped push this film into production was how impressed Wahlberg...
