In today’s film news roundup, Netflix buys Maggie Gyllenhaal’s drama “The Kindergarten Teacher” and production starts on Mads Mikkelsen’s “Polar” and the horror film “irl.”

Acquisition

Netflix has bought North America rights to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s drama “The Kindergarten Teacher” a month after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Sara Colangelo won Sundance’s directing award in the dramatic film category. Gyllenhaal plays a Staten Island kindergarten teacher who becomes obsessed with a gifted 5-year-old in her class.

The movie is a remake of the Israeli film written and directed by Nadav Lapid. The cast includes Parker Sevak, Rosa Salazar, Anna Baryshnikov, Michael Chernus, and Gael Garcia Bernal.

The film was financed and co-produced by Pia Pressure, Farcaster Films, Imagination Park Entertainment, Manhattan Productions, and PaperChase Films. Producers are Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren of Pie Films, and Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray of Maven Pictures.

BAFTA La announces Newcomer Programme participants

Newcomers Programme to feature 31 UK professionals who have relocated to Los Angeles.

The British Academy of film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) has announced the participants of its 2017-2018 Newcomers Programme.

Now in its 10th year, the programme aims to foster new global collaborations by supporting rising talent from the UK who have recently moved to Los Angeles to expand their knowledge, develop their skills, and expand their network of peers.

This year’s group contains 31 participants: eight actors, seven directors, six producers, three composers, two art directors, two screenwriters, one agent, one executive and one publicist.

These participants are divided into two groups – one that is entering their first year in the programme, and the other entering its second.

BAFTA La sees its Newcomers as the next wave of film, games, and television professionals who will go on to continue the tradition of successful collaborations between the Us and UK industries.

CONtv Will Release Its First Feature-Length Film On March 31

CONtv just launched earlier this month, but the convention and pop culture-focused streaming network already has a big piece of content planned. The Cinedigm and Wizard World-owned channel will release its first feature-length film Mythica: A Quest for Heroes on March 31, 2015.

Mythica: A Quest for Heroes is the first flick in a larger, epic trilogy. The first CONtv film tells the story of Marek (played by Survivor’s Melanie Stone), an escaped servant who learns to develop her unique powers through her wizard mentor Gojun (acted by fan-favorite Kevin Sorbo of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Andromeda). After her sister Teela (Dawn of the Dragonslayer’s Nicola Posener) is kidnapped by an ogre, Marek gathers a motley gang of adventurers to help her rescue her sister from captivity.

And, the trailer shows a deadly supernatural element. The film follows a group of twenty-somethings. They break into a church in search of a few thrills. Their lives end tragically and mysteriously. I know, I know, you’re confused, too! The thing is that Mark Murphy‘s upcoming horror movie obviously has two titles at this moment. Both of them are quite cool actualy – The Convent (sounds solid for a horror) and Crypt (even better, if you ask me). But that’s not so important right now, because we finally have a completely new images from the whole thing, and I’m sure you’re going to love it!

Watch: Video featurette for Dawn of the Dragon Slayer ahead of DVD/Blu-ray launch on February 13

Having breathed enough mythological fire to secure the Best Fantasy Film prize at BleedFest in Los Angeles, Anne K. Black's Dawn of the Dragon Slayer is heading to UK stores on DVD and Blu-ray on February 13, 2012.

The film is the first fantasy dragon feature to be directed by a woman and Anne presented the world premiere of the movie at BleedFest last September.

The festival is held in Los Angeles every month and celebrates "the women who love writing, producing, directing, and watching badass genre movies: action, thriller, sci-fi, horror, fantasy, western, exploitation (of men or audience only), B-movie, and erotica."

It was the first directing role for Anne, who also co-wrote the special effects extravaganza and previously co-scripted the 2003 modern-day update of Pride & Prejudice. After the praise for Dawn of The Dragon Slayer, she is now finishing work on another sword-and-sorcery film titled The Virgin And The Warrior.
