Fascinating but almost a snuff film.
I went into Violation expecting your typical revenge horror film and if you do that , you are going to be sorely disappointed. This really is more of a character driven drama with a realistic horror element to it, but it is not a horror film. With some hardcore male nudity, and some very realistic gore this has a "Funny Games" snuff film feel to it, very gruesome. Many elements of the movie work, it's nicely shot, although there are way too many close-ups that linger and add nothing, and some scenes go on too long, the acting though is fairly excellent. The story itself is fascinating but at the same time frustrating and this became my biggest problem with the film. Maybe on purpose, maybe not, the film is constructed in such a way that viewers will be divided as to the "violation" and the outcome. Going by the title alone, if the film makers expected me to have any pity for the lead actress's character, I did not. It doesn't seem they made it clear and there are scenes in the movie to back up arguments for both sides. I also felt disappointed by the non-ending, which is becoming kind of popular in recent movies. Overall if you are in the mood for seeing something controversial, with great acting, and are not easily offended, this is well worth watching. It's the type of movie you'll think about and want to discuss later on, which is a positive.
