Hank Bradford, the clever stand-up comic who performed a half-dozen times on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson before serving a five-year stint as head writer on the program, has died. He was 88.
Bradford died Jan. 18 in Los Angeles, his family announced.
Bradford did uncredited dialogue rewrites on the Burt Reynolds-starring Smokey and the Bandit (1977) — when he got the script, “it wasn’t a comedy,” he revealed to host Mark Malkoff on a 2017 episode of The Carson Podcast — and wrote for such TV shows as M*A*S*H, Private Benjamin and Three’s Company.
The Brooklyn native made his first appearance on the Tonight Show in September 1966 when it was based in New York. He got a spot inside the writers room in 1969, succeeded Marshall Brickman as head writer in 1970 and moved with the show to Burbank in 1972.

Ed Ames, the deep-toned baritone pop singer and actor who portrayed the faithful Cherokee sidekick Mingo on the 1960s NBC series Daniel Boone, has died. He was 95.
Ames died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with Alzheimer’s, his wife Jeanne told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Massachusetts and a son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, Ames starred as the Oxford-educated Mingo opposite Fess Parker as Daniel Boone on the first four seasons (1964-68) of the TV Western.
His most memorable night on television, however, came in April 1965 during an appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show. Demonstrating to host Johnny Carson how Mingo would expertly handle a tomahawk, he hurled the weapon at an outline of a cowboy drawn on a wooden board — and it stuck right in the crotch.
As the audience howled, Carson left his desk and said to Ames in now-classic ad-libbed lines,...

Mark Malkoff is bringing a sketch comedy experience to young YouTube viewers. The comedian, whose public challenge videos have received millions of views, has launched 2 Juice Minimum, a new channel aimed at children between the ages of four and nine.
Videos on 2Jm feature clean comedy that also manages to showcase the fearless style Malkoff is known for. Mark Malkoff has made a name for himself thanks to his willingness to undertake public "challenges", and his latest stunt is the perfect one for our technology-obsessed society. Malkoff has partnered with Us Cellular, which has challenged him to go an entire week without using his smartphone. 20 years ago, this challenge would've been no sweat, but in our modern age of constant smartphone consumption, it seems Herculean. To accompany the challenge, Us Cellular revealed a short study claiming that 76% of respondents would rather live without chocolate than their phones, while 62% would give up TV and 20% would quit eating food. “I can’t imagine life without my mobile phone for a week. It’s going to feel so like 1988 (minus the parachute pants). I know I will miss out on sweet text messages from my wife, I will probably get lost around the city, and will hopefully not be late to...

Disneyland is a place filled with smiles, but even The Happiest Place On Earth couldn't cheer up the Internet's most affectless feline. Grumpy Cat was one of a number of online personalities who took to Disneyland to participate in a branded social media campaign called #DisneySide. The campaign asked participating personalities to post some social media creation related to Disneyland, with the park's characters and resources as their collective canvas. So basically, it was an opportunity to spend a day at a theme park creating stuff. Who would ever turn that down? Not many people, apparently. The guest list is an impressive collection of talented people. As far as YouTube is concerned, attendees included MysteryGuitarMan, Mark Malkoff, and a particularly large number of Maker Studios creators--including Mike Tompkins, Mary Doodles, and Shaytards mama Colette. The #DisneySide campaign stretches far beyond YouTube. Instagram, Vine, and Pinterest creators all participated, as did a few notable bloggers.

Skype celebrated its tenth birthday this August, and Mark Malkoff is reminding us how cool it is that we can instantly video chat face-to-face with anyone in the world. The stunt-happy comedian's latest video has him Skyping with residents of 162 different countries, connecting the world in one neat video. Malkoff used his Facebook and Twitter followers to help find his international Skype companions, and he was able to chat with 140 countries, including Afghanistan, Fiji, The Gambia, Papua New Guinea, and, most impressively, North Korea, where he connected to an international tour guide during a football game at the massive Kim Il-Sung Stadium. Throughout the project, Malkoff had a variety of different experiences. Some of his Skype companions showed off the beauty of their home countries, some serenaded him, and one guy in Indonesia yelled at him for calling in at 2 Am local time. “Though the world is separated by geography and cultural differences,...

Grizz Chapman of 30 Rock fame was one of two genuinely likable characters on the show, Dot Com naturally being the other. Chapman, no stranger to sketch comedy, was enlisted by MyDamnChannel for a hilarious video above. 7'0" tall actor walks around Manhattan with Mark Malkoff, 5'7" Colbert Report Veteran, strapped to his chest in a baby carrier.
You may not be surprised, but this was not the first time Malkoff was transported around NYC with unorthodox assistance.

Since he began producing The Mark Malkoff Challenge for distribution on My Damn Channel, MSN, and YouTube, comedian Mark Malkoff has engaged in a number of public stunts, ranging from crowdsourced beard shaving to out-of-season trick-or-treating to short-distance taxi riding. His latest effort is one of his most attention-grabbing ones yet. Malkoff has posted an episode where he entertains passersby and viewers alike by riding around Manhattan in a Baby Bjorn carried by 30 Rock actor Grizz Chapman. Chapman, who stands over seven feet tall, has more than enough strength to haul the 5'7" Malkoff around the city. Malkoff reacts to his Bjorn experience in the same way any of us would: with lots of smiles and naps. The only question is where Malkoff got a Bjorn so big that even he could fit in it. Maybe he stole from the nearly-14-pound baby who was recently born in Pennsylvania. "You...

Craig Benzine Aka Wheezy Waiter has built up a sizable YouTube following on his main channel, where he posts whatever unusual, brainy, and imaginative videos fly from his unique brain. Now, the Chicago-based creator is using his YouTube notability to launch a new series, titled The Good Stuff, where he examines a weekly topic using a playlist of related videos. Each week, Benzine posts about six videos to the Good Stuff channel, each one relevant to that week's theme. The first week's theme was 'origins'; as a result, the playlist included Bill Nye talking about the origin of everything and Benzine's mother talking about the origin of Craig. Benzine's second effort is focused on airplanes, as he attempts to get over a fear of flying (with an assist from Mark Malkoff and others). My Damn Channel has launched its first ever online fundraising campaign: Love Me Cat, billed as a "puppet talk show with celebrities and you." The Mark Malkoff Challenge, one of the My Damn Channel comedy network's new offerings on MSN, has launched its first two episodes. The New York-based entertainer is up to his usual antics, using an episodic "challenge" as an excuse to cause silly encounters on the street. Malkoff kicks things off by strolling out to the middle of Times Square with a razor and some shaving cream, instructing the many passersby to shave his beard. What results is an epic saga that spans multiple forms of transportation and temporarily introduces a new fashion sensation: the half beard, which I assume will be very popular in Portland in about five years. The second episode has him trick-or-treating...in March. New Yorkers, being the kind and considerate people they are, mostly responded by ignoring him harder than someone who wants to talk about Jesus on the subway, but a few kind souls indulged him.

In the spirit of his Netflix binging, bus racing, and Bill Murray Stalking, Malkoff will undergo a different challenge every week. Now, when I see a guy cruising through New York City on a big wheel bike, I'll know what's up. Joining Malkoff on MSN will be pro games Brian and Mike, who will create Life: A Gamer's Guide. Yep, that's over 250 movies. Comedian Mark Malkoff, known for zany stunts like getting six-pack abs in 30 days, racing a NYC bus on a Big Wheel, and sleeping with celebrities (including a pillow fight on a red carpet), has teamed up with My Damn Channel to see how many films he can watch on Netflix Watch Instantly in one month. Malkoff's goal is to watch 250 movies from April 15 to May 14—over 400 hours in a month. For those of you too lazy to do the math, that's 13 hours a day. According to Nielsen, the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day. So 13 hours is a lot. Given eight hours of sleep per day, that leaves only 3 hours left for life. "Last week I didn't leave my apartment for 155 hours," Malkoff told Tubefilter. "I'm currently on day 10 and have watched over 130 hours." The upside? If he gets through 250, it works out to about $0.03 a title.

Db: You spoke with Terry Gross a while ago about being an altar boy at midnight mass, and “that guy” has said he that was an altar boy for 11 years, and I’m just curious if you, the real Stephen, were actually an altar boy for that long?

I’ve been asked to do a “best of” sort of post to close things out. My best of is sort of a “behind the scenes” experience that brought me to this site a long while ago.
So, where to begin?
Although I’ve only been a Completist a short while here, I’ve been a lurker and a follower of No Fact Zone for quite a while. I used my LiveJournal account as a means to follow Nfz ever since a memorable event, not only in my experience as a fan, but also as a milestone in the progress of the show itself: Rock and Awe: Countdown to Guitarmageddon! It all began with the first ever green screen challenge, followed by the coattail riding antics of the Decemberists and the subsequent rivalry that ensued. It culminated with the final show on December 20th, 2006 – a show that sealed the The...

In New York, the M42 crosstown bus isn't known as a lightning fast way of getting anywhere. “I almost never take the bus anymore because they are way too slow here in the city,” says Mark Malkoff, a Queens comedian who decided to test the snail-like performance of the 42nd Street bus by racing it...on a kid's big wheel. Malkoff chose a mile-long section of the bus route, between Madison and 10th Avenues, lined up, and took off. And, as you may have guessed, the bus came in second. Not that Malkoff didn't have to work at it. “My legs are in so much pain,” he told Wcbs.

Mark Malkoff is not one to back away from a challenge. This is the guy, after all, that lived for an entire month on an AirTran airplane, visited and consumed purchases at all 171 Starbucks locations in Manhattan in one day, had complete strangers carry him on their back the entire length of Manhattan, and even lived out of an Ikea for thirty days. His work is almost a genre of its own, somewhere between comedy and feats of human endurance, as he congers up original methods of gently hacking the modern infrastructure around us. His latest video, “Big Wheel vs. Bus” (below) went live today on My Damn Channel, with Malkoff lining up to race a New York City Mta crosstown bus for one mile on 42nd Street. “New York City buses can be very slow at times, so I decided to race a NYC bus one mile on 42nd...

G’day Zoners! I hope your all enjoying April Fool’s Day, and more importantly brushing up on your “Friday” lyrics so you can all sing-a-long with Stephen tonight. As much as I loathe that song I really hope Stephen can put the Tgi back in Friday – it was once my favourite day of the week. But I digress. This week in Six Degrees News Jon Stewart makes a cameo in “The Adjustment Bureau”, Jason Jones is co-starring in a new CBS comedy pilot, Lewis Black stopped by “The Late Late Show”, Mark Malkoff will be a guest on “Beer Diplomacy”, Amy Sedaris has a new iPad App, Conan talks about “Conan O’Brian Can’t Stop” and Movits! are touring Canada and The Us

Rob Barnett, founder and CEO, explains how he’s built an artist-friendly network that also plays nicely with brands.
Rob Barnett is in a "sleepless snit." Luckily, it's the good kind. He's suffering through sleepless nights because his online video network, My Damn Channel, is celebrating its third anniversary. It announced the winner of its "3some" user-submitted video contest this morning. And his constantly ringing phone may also have something to do with it. "You wouldn't believe the amount and the quality of incoming calls we're receiving from companies that want to work with us," Barnett says in his raspy New York growl. Plus, My Damn Channel recently landed a $4.4 million second round of venture capital and announced an ambitious new programming slate that includes a new season of the Illeana Douglas hit Easy to Assemble and series from comedian and filmmaker Mark Malkoff (Colbert Report) and Will Janowitz (The Sopranos...

Online comedy network My Damn Channel has quite the reputation for picking up some of the best web series on the market—not to mention a few shelves worth of awards for it stable of hit series like Wainy Days, You Suck at Photoshop, and Easy to Assemble. But now as the New York-based network celebrates its third birthday, it’s looking ahead. Today the network unveiled what is clearly its largest new slate of programming to date, with ten new channels (or web series) ranging from small indie comedies to music series and even a pair of custom branded companion web series for TV and Film. The two new branded companion channels, one for Paramount’s upcoming comedy Dinner for Schmucks and another for Adult Swim’s web series-turned-tv show Childrens Hospital, will help pay the bills for the network letting it take some risks on lesser known—but...

According to comedian/filmmaker Mark Malkoff, one theory that has not yet been publicly discussed in the late night mess is "Will Ferrell. Yes, Will Ferrell. I call it 'The Will Ferrell Curse'. You see, every time Ferrell has appeared as the first guest on a talk show the show hasn't lasted longer that a season. He was the first guest on John McEnroe's talk show on CNBC which lasted six months. Next Ferrell was the first guest on the very talented Megan Mullally's talk show that lasted a mere five months. Currently with Conan leaving Ferrell is zero for three." [...]...

The Swedish, commercial superstore that offers “affordable solutions for better living” is continuing to coast towards pop cultural immortality, via this Jonathan Coulton song, comedian Mark Malkoff, and numerous other send-ups. Ikea Heights takes more of an exploitative route, where the store unwittingly becomes the set for a web series about murder and cracking wise. Dubbed on its Channel101 homepage as ‘a melodrama shot in an Ikea furniture store in Burbank, CA,’ David Seger, Paul Bartunek and crew have executed a significant coup by guerrilla filming during store hours in the readymade bedrooms, office kiosks and wide walkways presumably unbeknownst to Ikea’s local powers-that-be and eliciting quizzical looks from the clientele Ikea Heights essentially revolves around two plots: one where leading man, James suspects and subsequently investigates his wife Candice’s affair, and another in which Federico and Nelson are investigated for an in-store murder by crack detective Ron Mathis.
