The Directors Guild of America announced its new Women’s Steering Committee Squad Mentorship Program along with its first class of mentees. In the program, 10 mid-career directors are each paired with filmmakers that are well established in the field.
The Wsc Squad will last for six months. Mentors will not only discuss craft and artistic opportunities with their mentees, but will also provide guidance on the unique challenges involved with navigating the film industry as women. A second round of the Wsc Squad will begin in Jan. 2022.
“We started this program because the need for mentorship and community never goes away, even when you are working at very high levels in the industry. Women-identifying directors deal with particular situations and it was our goal to forge a sort of sisterhood of mid-career directors,” said Amber Sealey, co-chair of the program. “We purposely paired them with mentors who can offer advice...

In one of the most hilarious films at the Los Angeles Film Festival this year, “The Last Time You Had Fun” is an enjoyable laughable film of four middle-aged people trying to have fun during a night out in Los Angeles.
The movie stars Eliza Coupe, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Demetri Martin, Kyle Bornheimer, Charlyne Yi and Jimmi Simpson.
Here’s the synopsis:
When Idea, cheeks streaked by mascara tears, unexpectedly shows up at her sister’s place, the staid Alison bargains her way out of mom duty for the night and the two head off to an eastside win bar. There, they run into Will and the freshly divorced, sweatpants-attired Clark. After some slightly inebriated commiserating about mismanaged marriages and other adult concerns, the foursome head out into the night, careening from downtown lofts to pot dispernsaries to midnight swims and back again, determined to prove they still have what...

We're all familiar with coming of age stories, but not many films take on what it's like to have one night of fun once we're all grown up. In Mo Perkins' comedy film "The Last Time You Had Fun" we get a look at a crazy night shared by four thirty-somethings. It's like an indie version of "Grown Ups," only undoubtedly better. In this exclusive clip, we see the four main characters, played by Eliza Coupe, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Demetri Martin and Kyle Bornheimer take a late night swim at a deserted beach. They're soon discovered by a no-nonsense security guard who informs the group that the beach is closed. Their reactions are priceless. "The Last Time You Had Fun" is premiering at the Los Angeles Film Festival June 14. Check out the clip below:...

San Diego’s Comic-Con International is the biggest event in the world devoted to genre pop culture. While the big Hollywood movies get the most mainstream press, there’s also a large, lesser known and promoted Independent Film Festival devoted to genre short films tucked away within the overall convention.
The Cci-iff, as it’s acronymed, runs completely concurrently with the convention with programming running from morning to night that includes films devoted to comic book-inspired movies, horror movies, sci-fi flicks, comedies and documentaries. There are also several panels on filmmaking sandwiched in between the on-screen entertainment.
The fest also gives out awards. This year’s juror panel includes filmmakers Steven-Charles Jaffee and Kyle Newman, plus entertainment journalist Borys Kit.
Programming blocks are broken up by genre and the full film lineup below gives the exact starting time of each short film. There’s also one feature film screening this year,...

Deception and betrayal drives the plot of this Mo Perkins release entitled A Quiet Little Marriage. It centers around Dax (Cy Carter) and Olive (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), an attractive young couple whose disagreements in their marriage about children, drive them to commit grim deceptions.
A Quiet Little Marriage is essentially a crazy sitcom, minus the comedy. In this production, Perkins creates an interesting couple, who outwardly seem to have a great marriage. In the film's progression however, it becomes evident that their relationship is built on a bed of quicksand. In the script, it is not clear how long the couple dated before tying the knot, but it is clear they failed to discuss their differences beforehand. In a bedroom scene between the couple, when Olive brings up the possibility of having children, Dax brushes off the subject claiming that they had already discussed and dismissed the idea on their first and second date.

I'm not sure if it's worse to see A Quiet Little Marriage if you haven't decided whether or not you want to have kids, or if you have. But as a provocative portrait of marital disharmony, Mo Perkins takes the idea of dissenting opinions about child-rearing to its ultimate, dramatic end in his feature directorial debut. Mary Elizabeth Ellis, probably best known as Charlie's crush object 'the waitress' on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, plays a hopeful mother whose bid for a baby is scuttled when her husband's troubled family history prompts him to deny her plea for them to start a family.
Olive (Ellis) and Dax (Cy Carter) are happily married, but not without problems: her father Bruce (Michael O'Neill) suffers from Alzheimer's, and his brother Jackson (Jimmi Simpson) is at least a borderline alcoholic who comes around only when he needs money. After Bruce accidentally slugs a nurse...

The Slamdance Film Festival, for those who don't know, is unofficially Sundance's little sister. It takes place the same week as Sundance in Park City, Utah and always features films that either didn't make it into Sundance or are a better fit for this fest. Last year, two films you might recognize, Jack Brooks and Dear Zachary, both premiered at Slamdance. This year, 29 films will be featured at the fest, 20 of which are part of their competition categories that are "strictly devoted to films without domestic theatrical distribution and budgets under $1 million, from first-time feature directors." You can find the full line-up of films playing this year on their site or we've featured a few highlights to keep an eye on below.
