Back in December, a YouTube star used his clout to highlight a handful of singers who haven’t received as much attention as he has. Peter Hollens, known for the multi-voiced music videos that have attracted more than 1.5 million subscribers to his primary YouTube channel, recently launched a cover contest in which he invited his friends in the YouTube community to judge performances sent in by his fans.
All of the competing performances are covers of “December Song,” which Hollens released as a music video back in early November. He invited his viewers to send in their own versions of the song, while encouraging them to “be creative” with how their stage and record their submissions. Ultimately, he received almost 600 submissions, which he evaluated alongside a group of fellow creators that included The Piano Guys, Madilyn Bailey, Tyler Ward, and Mike Tompkins.

YouTube has famously launched the careers of pop stars like Justin Bieber, Austin Mahone, and 5 Seconds of Summer. Now, Universal Pictures is looking to add three more names to that list. In order to promote its new movie Sing, the studio has launched the “Real Talent, From Real Life” contest, which will fly its winners to Los Angeles for a special event at YouTube Space La.
The contest, which evokes the central singing competition around which the plot of Sing is based, focuses on the Stevie Wonder number “Faith” (featuring Ariana Grande) from the Sing soundtrack. Entrants must listen to the song and send in a video in which they sing, clap, or dance along to the music. Universal will judge the submissions and will select three winners, who will be flown out for a “Next Rising Star” workshop at YouTube Space La on December 15th. YouTube stars and Universal...

Judy and Benji Travis have something truly inspirational to celebrate this Christmas. The married couple behind the YouTube channel ItsJudysLife (which boasts over 1.2 million subscribers) has so far raised $221,000 for the charity Convoy of Hope, thanks to the duo’s annual “Dancember” event.
The Travises launched this year's “Dancember” in the first week of December 2015 to raise money for Convoy of Hope’s Children’s Feeding Initiative, an effort to bring food to impoverished children around the world. The “Dancember” fundraiser (which included a 24-hour live stream with special guests) encouraged audience participation through incentives for donating and (of course) dancing. The 2015 broadcast featured the Travises cutting a rug along with fellow YouTube stars like Laura in the Kitchen, Mike Tompkins, The Lavigne Life, XSparkage, and Latoya Forever.
“When Benji said our goal for this year was $200,000, it seemed impossible,” Judy said in a release. “But I said, ‘let’s...

This Christmas, Judy and Benji Travis are using their digital stardom for good. The YouTube couple behind the popular family-centric channel ItsJudysLife and ItsJudysTime (which collectively boast over 2.4 million subscribers) have launched the month-long “Dancember” charity drive in order to bring food to hungry children around the world.
“Dancember” is an annual, dance-themed event spearheaded by the Travises to benefit a charity of their choice. This year, the YouTube couple chose to partner with Convoy of Hope, an organization which helps feed impoverished children in countries like the Philippines. In order to raise money for Convoy of Hope, the Travises have set up a dedicated Prizeo page for donations through the month of December. “Dancember” will also feature a day-long live stream on December 18, 2015 featuring plenty of dancing with fellow YouTubers and guest stars Promise Phan, Mike Tompkins, and Laura Vitale.
Additionally, the Travises have provided a great incentive for people to donate to “Dancember.

A trio of musicians known for their work on YouTube have found the time to shoot a new music video. Kurt Hugo Schneider, Tyler Ward, and Mike Tompkins take center stage in “All Time,” which is sponsored by watch brand Timex.
Timex sponsored the video in order to promote Metropolitan+, a new analog watch that tracks its wearer’s activity. As Schneider, Ward, and Tompkins dance around a park, they watch their steps closely, and Timex clock faces appear in the corners of the screen to show the new model in action. In case that wasn’t enough branding for you, the song is also built on top of the sound of a ticking clock.
Schneider is no stranger to brand deals; among his other projects, he also created a music video alongside Buick. “All Time,” like that video, is shot in one take, though Schneider uses some special effects...

Questionable content on the YouTube Kids app has caused quite a stir of late, but at the same time, there are a lot of high-quality, kid-friendly videos arriving on the app each day. Case in point: A group of musicians, including several with large followings on YouTube, teamed up to record new versions of their favorite classic kids songs.
The musicians who participated in the recording session include a cappella wizard Mike Tompkins and crooning guitarist Landon Austin. Together with several of their compatriots from the YouTube community, they teamed up singers and songwriters to cover timeless ditties like “Old MacDonald Had A Farm” and “The Wheels on the Bus.” Here’s Tompkins performing “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” alongside performers Alex Masters and Molly Reed:

Bethany Mota grew to popularity due to her beauty and fashion vlogging, but more recently she’s been forging a career in music, too (she sang a great rendition of Frozen’s “Let It Go” in the YouTube Rewind 2014 video). Now, she’s released a music video for her new song “Need You Right Now” featuring fellow YouTube musician and vocalist Mike Tompkins.
Produced by Tompkins, the “Need You Right Now” video begins with scenes from a futuristic, dystopian-like society all wearing the same neutral-toned clothing. One citizen secretly shows another person the triangle symbol on his palm, a shape which viewers later see all over an abandoned building that several citizens are approaching. The establishment is presumably an illicit party location in which Mota and Tompkins are performing “Need You Right Now” as a disco ball projects brightly-colored clothing overtop the attendees’ drab garb.
Mota is a multi-talented creator.

Maker Studios is one of YouTube's biggest networks, but how many of the viewers who watch Maker videos even know the company's name? The network's partners--a group that includes Epic Rap Battles of History, PewDiePie, and Toby Turner--are the recognizable brands that attract most fans, but Maker wants to get its own name out there. According to the Wall Street Journal, the soon-to-be-Disney-owned company will launch Maker.TV, a new off-YouTube video platform that will build its personal brand and help attract advertisers. Maker.TV will be a video destination separate from YouTube. Its launch will follow one of 2013's major trends: The migration of top YouTube content off of YouTube, an action that can distance creators from Google's aggressive ad rates. However, Maker's brass insists that the move isn't about advertising; instead, it has everything to do with the Maker name. Erin McPherson, who came to Maker from...

You’ve got to love a show that gets stronger over time… or at least gets higher ratings, and since that’s exactly the case with Syfy‘s Haven, fans can relax for quite a while. The network has ordered 26 new episodes, and they will air as a split fifth season. 13 will air in the fall, and the remaining 13 will air sometime in 2015.
According to the announcement, it isn’t just ratings that are high on the network’s radar. Up on the social media chatter front, the show is clearly proving itself as one with loyal, and vocal, fans, and the network is paying attention to that.

Last, Maker Studios delivered one of my favorite videos of the holiday season, a network-wide rendition of 'Deck the Halls' conducted by Mike Tompkins. This year, the top McN has managed to outdo itself with an entire album of Christmas favorites titled A Very Maker Music Christmas. Maker Music is rolling out individual music videos one song at a time as a '12 Days Of Christmas' program. Each video features a different creator, with BaracksDubs kicking things off. Out of the videos that have been released thus far, I'm partial to The Gregory Brothers' soothing cover of 'Away In A Manger', which shows a side of the musical quartet that doesn't involve silly covers of auto-tuned news clips. Andrew Gregory gets bonus points for his blingy guitar capo. Other partners featured in the campaign include Timothy DeLaGhetto, Hiimrawn, and Dodger. The full 12-track album is available at iTunes,...

Disneyland is a place filled with smiles, but even The Happiest Place On Earth couldn't cheer up the Internet's most affectless feline. Grumpy Cat was one of a number of online personalities who took to Disneyland to participate in a branded social media campaign called #DisneySide. The campaign asked participating personalities to post some social media creation related to Disneyland, with the park's characters and resources as their collective canvas. So basically, it was an opportunity to spend a day at a theme park creating stuff. Who would ever turn that down? Not many people, apparently. The guest list is an impressive collection of talented people. As far as YouTube is concerned, attendees included MysteryGuitarMan, Mark Malkoff, and a particularly large number of Maker Studios creators--including Mike Tompkins, Mary Doodles, and Shaytards mama Colette. The #DisneySide campaign stretches far beyond YouTube. Instagram, Vine, and Pinterest creators all participated, as did a few notable bloggers.

Baseball's World Series is going on right now, and as a depressed Yankees fan, I need a reason to get excited. Luckily, Mike Tompkins has come through in the clutch. The supremely talented a capella musician has teamed up with Pepsi for a remixed version of 'Take Me Out To The Ball Game' that uses nothing but natural baseball sounds and Tompkins' versatile voice. The video is housed on Maker Studios' Maker Music channel, and as with everything else Tompkins does, it's pretty sweet. The icing on the cake is filming location: Wrigley Field, the home of the Cubs, which as per usual is empty this time of year. As someone who dislikes both the Red Sox and the Cardinals, I'm happy to jump on the #TeamTompkins bandwagon.

Original Song: "Clarity" by Zedd featuring Foxes
Cover Artist: YouTube a cappella singing sensation, Mike Tompkins.
How It's Different: Tompkins uses only his voice and mouth instead of instruments to perform this unique rendition of Zedd's hit song. The self-made video is also more more upbeat and colorful than the original.
Why We Love It: This a cappella cover is an awesome tribute to Zedd, and Tompkins illustrates how he created the music in a fun and educational visual format.
Better Than The Original? This cover by Mike Tompkins captures the original in true a cappella form, which makes it impossible to make such a claim to fame. With that said, you might find yourself listening to both versions back-to-back from now on.

I guess Chester See is sick of crooning piano ballads. The popular YouTuber has teamed up with Toby Turner, Wayne Brady, and a host of other recognizable creators for 'Whistle While I Work It', an utterly ridiculous yet oddly catchy dance song. The video features a heavily-autotuned See and Turner hitting the club, where they are joined by several familiar faces, including Timothy DeLaGhetto, Andrew Garcia, Mike Tompkins, Lana McKissack, The Fu Music, and many, many others. Wayne Brady, fresh of his debut appearance on the revived Whose Line Is It Anyway?, drops a guest verse where he reminds us how he once asked if he would have to choke a bitch. In a random twist, the video is bookended by Tony Hawk appearances, in an apparent bump for the skateboarder's Ride channel. Pauly Shore also makes an appearance in See's entourage. In Tompkins' case, he is the master of a capella, capable of covering a plethora of hits using only his mouth. Now, Tompkins is exercising his own songwriting chops through 'Shake The Ground', a new original song. 'Shake The Ground' features Tompkins' signature layered vocals, with plenty of interesting-sounding noises coming out of his mouth. However, unlike his other videos, this one is not strictly a capella; instead, the vocals are accompanied by a bass-heavy track with a solid beat. There's also a few dubstep breakdown born from some edited Tompkins hollering, as in his Skrillex video. The Maker Studios creator has released an accompanying lyric video on his channel, pbpproductions; check it out below. To go along with the video, Tompkins has offered up plenty of 'Shake the Ground' swag for sale.

Vanilla Ice: Rapper, reality show star and ... YouTube star? Maybe someday soon!
The singer, born Rob Van Winkle, performed with some of YouTube's biggest musical stars at the Hollywood Palladium Sunday night for the 3rd Annual Streamy Awards, which celebrates the best of online programming. The collaboration was an anxious affair though because he had only met crooner Chester See, musician Mike Tompkins and Epic Rap Battles of History's Nice Peter the night before. "We had no game plan but put everything together last night. It was so sloppy, I can't even tell you," Van Winkle told TVGuide.com....

YouTube is all about working together. The most popular non-music video of 2012 was a collaboration, and the upcoming Streamy Awards will continue to highlight that communal spirit. Epic Rap Battles of History will perform alongside Mike Tompkins, its Maker Studios compatriot. Joining them on stage will be Chester See; he appeared with Kassem G in Rewind YouTube Style, and Kassem showed up with Tompkins in the Maker Studios holiday video. It seems as if every creator on YouTube can be linked to each of his or her contemporaries through a series of collaborations. We're at the point where it's possible to play a game called "Six Degrees of YouTube Bacon." And then there is Vanilla Ice. The aforementioned YouTube stars combine for almost five million subscribers and more than 600 million views, but Ice adds another element. His performance provides a mainstream presence that is becoming increasingly more popular within YouTube collaborations.

We recently discussed the host of creators--including Kurt Hugo Schneider, Christina Grimmie, and Mike Tompkins--who have made a YouTube living out of predominantly cover songs. These users input the high traffic created by music videos and output an equally satisfying, distinct echo. No one has perfected this process more than Boyce Avenue, who have used a series of popular covers to promote their own catchy brand of alternative rock. Boyce Avenue is, like the Fines, the Gregories, and the Vlogs, just a pair of YouTube-famous brothers who decided their reverent versions of popular songs might find a decent audience on the Internet. Their second video, a cover of Rihanna's "Umbrella", ballooned to over ten million views, at which point the musical trio was off to the races. Their YouTube channel now has the 41st most subscribers on the site, with more than 2.3 million fans. No independent artist has as big of a YouTube following.

Many of YouTube's top musicians--including Megan Nicole, Tyler Ward, Snoop Lion, and Mike Tompkins--use either Maker Studios or Fullscreen their network of choice. Now, these artists (and hundreds of others) will have more flexibility when it comes to cover songs. Maker and Fullscreen have announced a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group which will allow the two networks' creators to access and monetize Universal's entire library. Many YouTube artists already thrive off of cover songs, and this new deal will allow these videos to take a step up from quasi-legal, at least for the two participating networks. Maker and Fullscreen artists will be able to cover songs from Universal artists without any fear of copyright infringement, and revenue made from these cover videos will go to both the record label and the YouTube artist. “This is a groundbreaking arrangement that encourages the use of our music and unleashes Maker to reach its full potential,...

Vanilla Ice kicks off the first verse of his song that cemented his status as a true pop music legend with the following words: “All right stop, collaborate, and listen.” We at Tubefilter and the Streamy Awards like those lyrics and their message. A lot. That’s why we’re ecstatic to announce two of the star-studded, stellar, and (most importantly) collaborative performances that will be taking place at the 3rd Annual Streamy Awards on February 17, 2013 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California. Rip Van Winkle, who sold 11 million copies of his debut album To the Extreme under the moniker of Vanilla Ice will be taking the stage to perform a few of his perennial hits alongside a set of YouTube’s and online video’s most notable musicians, including Chester See, DeStorm, the duo from Epic Rap Battles of History (aka Peter Shukoff and Lloyd Ahlquist), and Mike Tompkins...

The holidays are a time for giving, and YouTube is doing its part to keep up the Yuletide spirit. The Vlogbrothers have raised over $441,000 with Project For Awesome, but they aren't the only philanthropists in the online video world. DS2DIO, the dance channel started by Justin Bieber: Never Say Never director Jon M. Chu and producer Hieu Ho, is releasing four holiday videos, each one featuring a choreographer, a YouTube star, and a charity to which DS2DIO will donate $5,000. Ho explained how the holiday video series came to be: "In the spirit of the holidays, Jon and I wanted to do something to help give back... and we thought it would be fun to gather some of our friends and fellow YouTubers to spread a little joy through dance, while bringing attention to organizations that are really making a difference. And lucky for us, our friends happen to...

With precise editing and an undeniable artistic vision, the 25-year-old was able to make a seamless cover of Minaj's song.
