Before nominations closed, live music fans across the country submitted 1,300 local venues to our Hometowns of Consequence initiative. After tallying the votes, we narrowed it down to just four per region, and now we’re shining the spotlight on those selected finalists. Now that we’ve covered the Southeast, Northeast, and West, it’s time to give the floor to our Midwest finalists: Ohio’s Beachland Ballroom and Tavern, Minnesota’s First Avenue/7th St. Entry, Missouri’s Knuckleheads, and Illinois’ Metro.
Each venue answered our curated Q&a, sharing memories of favorite shows and stories from their respective communities. In addition to highlighting the venues themselves, we also want to give props to the people who make these spaces more than just a building, those working at all levels to keep live music alive.
Voting for our Hometowns of Consequence winners will continue through October 21st, with the winners...

Last January, the fifth installment of the Outlaw Country Cruise was at sea when the Who declared the novel coronavirus a public health emergency. Like the majority of cruises, the 2021 installment was subsequently postponed and will now launch in 2022 with a just-announced lineup.
Set for February 25th through March 3rd, 2022, Outlaw Country Cruise 6 will feature perennial headliners Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Elizabeth Cook, along with a special reunion: Emmylou Harris will re-team with the core members of her legendary backing group, the Hot Band, including Rodney Crowell and Albert Lee.

Saving Mr. Banks (Disney)
How many of you remember Walt Disney and Tinkerbell's opening every Sunday night on his primetime television show? That director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) recreates that magical moment is just one of the many small charms in this wonderful movie. Award-winning actors taking on American's greatest children's entertainment advocate seems a delicious proposition. And it is. This is the story of Walt's (Tom Hanks) -- he preferred that everyone refer to each other by their first names on his studio lot -- relentless pursuit (20 years!) of Mrs. P.L. Travers's (Emma Thompson) much-beloved literary classic Mary Poppins.
Director Hancock seamlessly threads two plots together: the trials and tribulations of the backstage Hollywood drama of creating the film version of Mary Poppins, and the Australian-based melodrama of Mrs. Travers's childhood with her loving but tragically alcoholic father "Ginty" Goth, portrayed by the charismatic Colin Farrell.

You don’t exactly get to hear Angels Sing, as the title of the new Christmas-themed movie would have it, but the film comes pretty close. This Austin-set, modern-day variation of Miracle on 34th Street about a father who disdains Christmas features Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett singing holiday classics, as well as cameos by such music stars as Dale Watson, Sara Hickman, Marcia Ball, Charlie Sexton, Miss Lavelle White and Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson. They deliver a refreshing musical Texan twang to this Hallmark Hall of Fame-style family movie that should enjoy a long

Actor and filmmaker/producer Zalman King died last week. Judging from reactions on social media, it appears many people remember him for producing the popular Showtime erotic TV series Red Shoe Diaries. But me, when I heard he had died, my first thought was, "Chickensh*t bingo." Here's why.
The first SXSW Film Festival I covered professionally was in 2006, and although I was writing for Cinematical -- a website with national readership -- I was still interested in the Austin-shot movies. My attention was caught by a documentary about musician Dale Watson called Crazy Again, which screened at the Dobie. I was on a festival press email list for the first time and was even invited to the film's after-party at Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon on Burnet Road. (I didn't go. I didn't want to stop watching all the movies. This is often my problem at film fests.)
