On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.
Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

The Tony Awards are about to broadcast the last award of the night (Best Musical, given to The Outsiders), but champagne is already flowing at the P.J. Clarke’s across from the Lincoln Center, where the ceremony is being held. The restaurant is hosting a party for Stereophonic, this season’s buzzy new play that follows a Seventies band (that is definitely not Fleetwood Mac) as they work on a new album while on the cusp of great fame as break-ups, hard partying, and power struggles threaten to end it all.

Stereophonic won the Tony for best play Sunday, one of the five Tony Awards the most nominated play in Tonys history earned during the 2024 edition of the Broadway ceremony.
The play, written by David Adjmi, follows a band trying to record a hit album in the 1970s and features a rock score written by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler. While the majority of the production features spoken dialogue, thus classifying the show as a play, rather than a musical, the Stereophonic actors also perform songs on stage as part of the show.
Adjmi accepted the award for best play, noting the tough journey to get the play, which spans more than three hours and includes a recording booth on stage, produced. He had previously spoken with The Hollywood Reporter about how the play illustrates his own struggle not to give up on himself as an playwright.

A whopping 36 shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there were 10 original works and five revivals in the running for nominations. Over on the musical side, 15 new tuners were in contention for bids as were six musical revivals. The cutoff date for eligibility was Thursday, April 25.

“I think ‘Stereophonic’ has taken off in a really once-in-a-lifetime way within the theatre community,” shares Sam Eckmann about the show he believes is the frontrunner for Best Play at the 2024 Tony Awards. He and I recently reconvened to discuss all 11 of the play categories ahead of the 77th annual ceremony on Sunday, June 16, and we didn’t need much time to debate the top category with David Adjmi’s “Stereophonic” so far out front to prevail. Watch our full Tony Awards predictions slugfest above.
We are feeling similarly confident about Branden Jacobs-Jenkins‘ “Appropriate” taking home the trophy for Best Play Revival. Sam points out that since this play has never been on Broadway before – it is considered a revival under the Tony Awards “classics” rule – the playwright will be on the ballot and eligible to win, which will help push the show over the finish line because “he’s a really admired writer.

Stereophonic is now slated to perform at the Tony Awards.
The decision comes amid outcry from fans and the playwright, David Adjmi, himself, after the initial performance lineup was announced and did not include the show. While Stereophonic is a play, it features a score by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, and has been nominated for best score, as well as 12 other Tonys.
Tony producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner had hinted Tuesday that the show may be performing. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the producers were asked if there had been further discussions about them performing.
“There are always discussions that start here and here,” Weiss replied, putting his hands out the length of about a ruler. “There’s a lot of speculation and people forming their own judgments and opinions, and we are trying on our show to represent the season as well as we possibly...

Stereophonic, the David Adjmi play about a 1970s rock band that prominently features the fictional band’s songs, will perform a musical number at the Tony Awards this Sunday after all.
The earlier exclusion of the play from the musical number line-up was publicly questioned by the playwright and widely condemned on social media among fans of the Best Play nominee.
Traditionally, the musical numbers performed on the Tony broadcast are largely drawn from the Best Musical and Best Musical Revival nominees, which this year include Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Merrily We Roll Along, Suffs, The Outsiders, The Who’s Tommy and Water for Elephants.
But this is no traditional year. Among the 13 nominations earned by the Best Play nominee Stereophonic are two top music-related categories: Best Score (music and lyrics by Will Butler) and Best Orchestrations (Will Butler and Justin Craig).

There are days when the success of the most Tony-nominated play of all time and its leading lady comes down to a gossip session with her co-star, a facial steam, and a poorly microwaved serving of Kraft Mac and Cheese. When the curtains go up at New York’s John Golden Theatre, Sarah Pidgeon transforms into Stereophonic‘s singer-songwriter Diana, a fictional powerhouse who is an amalgamation of the greatest female rock stars of all time, most clearly Stevie Nicks. But she and co-star Juliana Canfield have a ritual to complete before that can happen.

Stereophonic, David Adjmi’s play (with music) about a fractious ’70s rock band and the making of what will become its masterpiece, has been extended for 20 weeks, a big show of confidence and thanks from producers.
The play will now run through January 5, 2025, at Broadway’s Golden Theatre, an extension well beyond the initially planned 14-week run that will take the production through the lucrative holiday season. (The limited engagement was initially intended to close August 18.)
The rather unlikely hit show, which drew raves Off Broadway before drawing raves on Broadway, was by no means a sure thing, with its near-documentary fly-on-the-recording-studio-wall approach and bold infusions of original songs that nearly takes Stereophonic from play to musical.
But box office started strong and ticketbuyers regularly fill most if not all of available seats. In April, the play received 13 Tony Award nominations, making Adjmi’s work, directed by Daniel Aukin, the...

David Adjmi did not intend to re-enter the world of theater.
With a handful of credits under his belt, Adjmi had sworn off playwriting after a high-stakes collaboration fell apart. Then, as he sought to fulfill one last playwriting grant obligation, he landed on the idea of Stereophonic, which was nominated for 13 Tony Awards this season, becoming the most nominated play in history.
The process of creating the play, about a fictional band trying to record a hit album in the 1970s, has both challenged and rewarded the collaborators, including Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, who wrote songs for the band, and the actors, who were called upon to perform those songs in the play, even though most of them were not musicians before joining the cast. And for Adjmi, the play morphed into a deeply personal look at his career.

David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

Two of the more anticipated star turns on Broadway this season — Steve Carell making his debut in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Uncle Vanya and The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli returning to the New York stage in Circle in the Square’s An Enemy of the People — got no love from Tony Award nominators today, and the West End hit Patriots, written by The Crown‘s Peter Morgan, barely registered on the roster, with only one nom for lead actor Michael Stuhlbarg.
Even more empty-handed than Patriots was The Wiz, the cheery, if rote, revival of the beloved Black retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Despite a star turn by Wayne Brady, it’s possible that Tony nominators saw the Broadway revival for the uninspired road show it is.
Other shows with zero nominations included I Need That starring Danny DeVito, the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony,...

A musical inspired by the life of Alicia Keys and a play that loosely draws on the story of Fleetwood Mac — Hell’s Kitchen and Stereophonic, respectively — cleaned up at the 2024 Tony Awards nominations. Both received 13 nominations, more than any other show this year.
Hell’s Kitchen was nominated for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (for Kristoffer Diaz), Best Direction (Michael Greif), and Best Choreography (Camille A. Brown), while its stars Maleah Joi Moon, Shoshana Bean, and Kecia Lewis all picked up acting nods. But despite its impressive haul,...

Stereophonic became the most nominated play in Tony Awards history Tuesday, scoring a surprisingly strong 13 nominations for the 2024 Tony Awards, including acting nods for almost the entire cast. Several other shows also saw most of their leading roles nominated, including Days of Wine and Roses, which closed early but still saw nominations for its leads Kelli O’Hara and Brian D’Arcy James, as well as Merrily We Roll Along, which saw nominations for its three leads, Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez.
Stereophonic also landed a best score nomination, a bit unusual since the production is a play, but it features original songs written by ex-Arcade Fire member Will Butler for the fictional band at the center of the story. While the songs in the play have been praised, the nomination is a bit atypical given that most of the songs featured in the musical are delivered in snippets,...

Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Think the occasionally dense “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” the provocative “Privacy,” or the genre-bending experiment “The Lifespan of a Fact.” He’s long been an asset to the NY stage scene, and this morning’s recognition long-deserved.

Three dozen shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there are 10 original works and five revivals in the running. Over on the musical side, 15 new tuners were in contention as were six musical revivals. The cutoff date for eligibility was April 27.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the fourth and final time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 26, to discuss eligibility of 12 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
The productions discussed were: “The Wiz,” “Suffs,” “Stereophonic,” “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Cabaret,” “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Patriots,” “Mary Jane,” “Uncle Vanya,” “Illinoise,” “Mother Play,” and “The Great Gatsby.”
The most impactful decision of this announcement is the determination that both Steve Carell and William Jackson Harper will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for the Lincoln Center Theatre revival of “Uncle Vanya.” Most prognosticators assumed that Harper would contend in the Featured Actor race. This category switch means that Lead Actor in a Play will have a guaranteed five nominees. Conversely, Anika Noni Rose was not bumped up to the Lead Actress in a Play category, so that race will contain just four guaranteed nominees...

“He is in a lot of ways an Everyman, but he’s an unlikely one, and that’s how I see myself, too,” shares Eli Gelb about his character Grover in the new Broadway play “Stereophonic” by David Adjmi. The drama unfolds in a recording studio in the 1970s and the actor plays the sound engineer who has to help a band on the cusp of superstardom record their next album. The actor thinks that each of the seven characters in the play are “complex,” and of his in particular, he explains, “For as loveable as Grover is, he also isn’t perfect. It’s the 1970s, he’s a straight man, he’s pretty misogynistic when you meet him, and I think that’s important to acknowledge,” though he does prove to have “a good heart.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“When you wear these boots, you’ve got to strut,” quips Tom Pecinka about the costumes he dons to transform into 1970s rock star Peter in the new Broadway play “Stereophonic.” Though he has never been an actor who “ascribes to this idea that once you put on the shoes, you’ll be fine,” the clothes really did help him step into a “power position” in the play. It also helped address “one of the biggest insecurities” he had when he took the role Off-Broadway, which he describes as having to answer questions such as, “How does this guy move? How does this guy enter a room? How does this guy leave a room? How does he take up space, because he’s a big character?” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

In the new Broadway show Stereophonic, the year is 1976 and a band on the verge of superstardom is recording their next album in Sausalito, California. We never learn the band’s name nor do we hear the single from their last album that just shot to Number One a year after its release, but over three hours, we get to know the weaknesses, fears, anxieties and hopes of all five members — and the two rookie engineers trapped in the studio with them for the next 12 months.

Arguably the best new American drama since Annie Baker’s The Flick, David Adjmi’s Stereophonic shares both a hyper-naturalistic style and a sprawling three-hour running time with that 2013 masterwork. But the similarities end there. Chronicling a turbulent year in California recording studios during which a fictional 1970s rock band labors over the follow-up to their breakthrough album, this is an immersive plunge into the fraught process of artistic collaboration as pressures mount and interpersonal harmony dissolves into acrimony.
Funny, raw and poignant in equal measure, this expertly sculpted play has the feel of both a behind-the-music docudrama and a lost Robert Altman film, with its astute microcosmic focus, its frequent wash of overlapping dialogue and its sly nudges toward satire. In fact, while the music — fabulous original songs written by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire — is pop-rock rather than country, Stereophonic could almost be an expanded vignette lifted right out of Nashville.

“The Righteous Gemstones” star Tony Cavalero has joined the cast of “Lips Like Sugar,” a crime thriller set during the 1984 summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles, starring Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson.
Cavalero is best known for his breakout performance as Keefe, the lovable ex-Satanist turned fan-favorite mullet man, in Danny McBride’s cult hit HBO series. “The Righteous Gemstones” was renewed for a fourth season last July.
With “Lips Like Sugar,” Cavalero joins a buzzy ensemble which also includes Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis, Sasha Calle, Kathryn Newton and Erin Moriarty. Harrelson and Wilson star as detectives John Carr and Phil Harris, a pair of homicide cops working to solve a possible serial killer case while police and city officials demand that all murders in L.A. be labeled “missing persons” for the duration of the games.

Harrelson and Wilson star as detectives John Carr and Phil Harris, a pair of homicide cops working to solve a possible serial killer case while police and city officials demand that all murders in L.A. be labeled “missing persons” for the duration of the games.
According to the film’s official synopsis, the plot kicks up when the...

Stereophonic, the critically lauded play by David Adjmi that struck a chord with Off Broadway audiences last year with its very Fleetwood Mac-esque tale of music-making and ’70s-style excess, will move to Broadway this spring.
The Broadway staging, with the Off Broadway cast intact, will begin performances at Broadway’s Golden Theatre on Wednesday, April 3, with an official opening night on Friday, April 19. The limited run will play for 14 weeks only.
The play-with-music had its premiere engagement at Off Broadway’s Playwrights Horizons. Directed by Daniel Aukin, Stereophonic, which features original songs by Academy Award nominee and Grammy Award winner Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire, Stereophonic stars Will Brill as Reg, Andrew R. Butler as Charlie, Juliana Canfield as Holly, Eli Gelb as Grover, Tom Pecinka as Peter, Sarah Pidgeon as Diana, and Chris Stack as Simon.
Producing are Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions,...

Will Butler + Sister Squares have shared “Arrow of Time,” a new song from their upcoming self-titled album. Listen to the single below.
“Arrow of Time” begins as something of a dance track, as a slinky bass line propels Butler’s “waiting for the kill.” In the chorus, however, the song picks up, as the singer frantically chants, “I’ve been patient, I’ve been very still/ Watching as I’m trying not to feel.” Butler + Sister Squares worked the song out on tour last summer, and according to the artist, it became a fan favorite. “People really liked this when we played it; a few people at the merch table were like, ‘Which record is this song on?’”
If the single’s music video — recorded, according to text in the clip, before “the shitshow that was 2025” — confuses you, Butler explained the meaning of “Arrow of Time” in a statement. The...

Loosely based on a true story, the feature is set during the 1984 Olympic Games in L.A. The coming-of-age thriller is set against the backdrop of the punk and skate worlds of West Los Angeles. As the new friendship of two teenage girls from different walks of life unfolds and city officials focus on the Olympics, the lives of two former detectives (Harrelson and Wilson) become intertwined when one of the girls goes missing.
Grammy winner Brantley Gutierrez will take the helm on a story written by Anthony Tambakis (Warrior).

Woody Harrelson (True Detective) and Owen Wilson (Loki) have signed on to star in the coming-of-age thriller Lips Like Sugar, Deadline reports. Brantley Gutierrez will be making his feature directorial debut on this one after more than a decade of working on short films and music videos.

Will Butler is teaming up with his backing band Sister Squares for a new album, naturally titled Will Butler + Sister Squares. The LP arrives September 22nd via Merge, and as a preview, the artists have shared the lead single “Long Grass.” The band have also mapped out North American and European tour dates for later this year.
Butler began working with Sister Squares — Miles Francis, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore, and Sara Dobbs — several years ago, when he first began putting out solo music. “I met Jenny — my wife! — in college, the year before I joined Arcade Fire,” he explained in a statement. “When I needed a band to tour Policy, I asked [Jenny’s sister] Julie to join because I trusted her musically. And I asked Sara, Jenny and Julie’s childhood friend, because I knew she was super talented.” Meanwhile, Buter met previous Antibalas drummer Francis when his band opened for Arcade Fire.

Michael R. Jackson, the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning playwright of A Strange Loop, is sinking his choppers into a stage musical adaptation of the 2007 cult horror-comedy film Teeth, set for an Off Broadway debut next year.
The musical, announced today as part of Playwrights Horizons’ 2023-24 season, will feature lyrics by Jackson, music by Anna K. Jacobs and a book co-written by both. Previews will begin in February 2024.
The 2007 film is a very dark horror-comedy concerning “vagina dentata,” written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein. As described by Playwrights Horizons, the musical, like the film, will follow Dawn O’Keefe, “an evangelical Christian teen with a powerful secret not even she understands – when men violate her, her body bites back. Literally.”
“In Teeth, the tethered yet battling forces of sexuality and religion push each other towards wild theatricality, and Jackson’s and Jacobs’s sharp tale of revenge and transformation tears through a...

Age is just a number and it’s a sign that we’re all getting very, very old because we might actually get our first male acting Oscar winner who was born in the 1990s this year.
No man who entered this world in the ’90s has won an Oscar in either acting category yet. There are three currently in the running, two in Best Actor — Austin Butler (“Elvis”), who was born in 1991, and Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), who was born in 1996 — and one in Best Supporting Actor, Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), who was born in 1992. But it’s Butler who has the best shot to take home the gold as he’s locked in a three-man battle with Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) for the prize. Butler, who’s already bagged the Best Drama Actor Golden Globe for his turn as Elvis Presley,...

Inspiration for songs can come from anywhere. The greatest songwriters of all time could turn a trip to the supermarket into sprawling epic about disillusionment and the restraints we, as a public, have placed on our own lives. Never mind that they forgot to pick up the orange juice because they were about to write one of the greatest songs in the history of music.
That’s why it’s often very fruitful for a songwriter to keep a healthy stack of periodicals at the ready. Keeping up with current events is one of the simplest, most effective ways to come up with a song that listeners can relate to, particularly if the subject matter is one that frequently recurs in the papers. This idea was much more popular back when print media was more prominent, though this kind of inspiration still exists to some extent today.

Who knew we could love Emma Stone even more? The lovable actress has so many admirable qualities, but she really took it up a notch while starring in Will Butler's music video for "Anna," the second single off the Arcade Fire musician's debut solo LP, Policy. Prancing through the Queen Mary, a prim and properly dressed Stone lets loose while interacting with various crew members on the ship. We're talking licking faces and eating money, while showing off some impressive dance moves throughout the clip. The music video was directed by Brantley Gutierrez and choreographed by Ryan Heffington, who handled the dancing in Sia's "Chandelier," and the recent reboot of Paul...

While Emma Stone has yet to show off her singing and dancing skills on the big screen, it's only a matter of time until that happens. The actress impressed on the stage with "Cabaret" recently, and if her starring role in "Anna," the latest music video for Will Butler's solo record Policy, is any indication, the already charming Stone has even more screen presence to share. Directed by Brantley Gutierrez, the wonderfully choreographed promo has a pretty simple concept: Stone dances herself around a naval vessel with a bunch of sailors. And it's an infectious watch, with Stone proving that someone should really make a Busby Berkeley-esque feature film with her pronto, while Gutierrez immediately makes himself known as one to watch by delivering a visually exciting piece of work that should land him on a few radars. Directed by Brantley Gutierrez, this alternate version of Will Butler's "Anna" vid stars Emma Stone in a marathon-dance frenzy aboard the purportedly haunted Rms Queen Mary. Kahlil Joseph’s documentary about the beloved stadium fillers may connect with their fans, though it tells us little about the music or the people who make it
Related: Arcade Fire's Will Butler: 'My goal in art is to be like Moby-Dick'
Music-video director Kahlil Joseph’s first feature explores Arcade Fire’s most recent album, Reflektor, and plays like an electronic press kit with jumped up ideas about itself. Comprised of concert footage, and more intimate scenes of the band writing and recording in Haiti, all shot on a range of stocks, it’s flabby and repetitive, but peppered with moments of exquisite sonic lusciousness – not unlike the album itself. Naturally, enjoyment will depend to high degree on how much viewers already like the American-Canadian-Haitian stadium fillers. But as a piece of cinema, it’s a doggedly indifferent work that tells us little about the music or the people who make it.

The Reflektor Tapes
Directed by Kahlil Joseph
Canada, 2015
After Arcade Fire won the Grammy for The Suburbs in 2010, they went from becoming the biggest indie rock band in the world to simply one of the biggest bands in the world. In turn, their sound on their 2013 album Reflektor grew far more eclectic, embracing more of the polyrhythms and exotic influences that had colored all of their previous records. But as the band has blown up, they’ve turned increasingly inward, moving away from the twee indie hipsters of “Wake Up” and toward the more esoteric and mysterious. Before the release of Reflektor they performed several pop-up shows as The Reflektors and turned their album into a double album opus drawing on the Greek tragedies of Orpheus and Eurydice. This is hardly the arc of your typical pop stars.

While Arcade Fire are still recharging their batteries after touring the world in support of Reflektor, and with some members focusing on solo projects — Will Butler has been busy on the road promoting Policy, while Tim Kingsbury plays his first solo show next month — the band still has something special in the vault for fans. This fall, Arcade Fire will release their first feature film, "The Reflektor Tapes," and a healthy eight minute preview has landed online along with a much shorter teaser trailer. Directed by Sundance prize winning filmmaker Khalil Joseph, the movie is a behind-the-scenes look at the band, their performances, journeys to Haiti, and the bigger question of what music means to them. It's a step away from your traditional band documentary, but fans rarely expect the ordinary from Arcade Fire. "The Reflektor Tapes" hits the big screen on September 24th. Watch below.
